Got off the train in the early morning in Chicago and needed a cup of coffee on the way to the dispensary. I saw Dark Matter and I was intrigued by the looks of the place and decided to stop in. It was unseasonably hot for May so I decided to get an iced coffee and low and behold they had many flavors on tap including nitro. Both the baristas, and the coffee and food they sling have a vibrant and funky flavor. The coffee was surprisingly excellent. The breakfast tacos were also okay. One of my reservations was the lack of breakfast pastries (other than a few donuts) -- it made the cafe feel a bit more empty overall. The other reservation was that the interior didn't quite hit the cozy vibe that I typically look for in a coffee shop. But still, it's a great place to stop in for a quick cappuccino and a breakfast taco. read more

Ordered with an extra shot and probably didn't need it! The coffee flavor is bold and flavorful. Doesn't taste like the coffee beans are burnt or bland. In this area Dark Matter is a solid choice. Some of their roasts aren't my favorite but their specialty drinks are really great. Cafe Miel is my go to. Also randomly their bean and cheese burrito is the greatest thing on earth. I will spend the rest of my life trying to recreate it. If it's nice out there's plenty of seating, if not there's not a ton of space inside. But share a table with someone, community is what coffee shops are for. read more

Came here to grab coffee before work after many coworkers recommended this place and raved about how good it was. Happy to say it lived up to the hype! I got a hot agave latte with almond milk. It comes with agave, cinnamon, and chocolate. This was probably the best latte I've had in a LONG time. It was sweet but not over powering, spiced well, and had a great espresso taste. I tried the Vanilla Suburbs Nitro at Dark Matter, and honestly it was mid. There was no flavor of the vanilla or the cocoa and was just watery. I get that it's not supposed to be sweet, but it felt like it was missing something. The barista was very sweet though and patiently answered all our questions and let us take our sweet time to choose from the menu. The cafe is chic and nice. Would I order from here again? I stopped in here recently only because I've seen their coffee on sale in the coffee aisle at my local grocery store. I was disappointed with the lack of attentiveness by customer service, the sloppy uncomfort appearance of the employees, the overall Vibe of the place, the quality of my coffee and the presentation of it, and the price. My brother-in-law swears by Dark Matter and I love it too. The overall spacey vibe to their product is unique and fun - and the quality they shovel out is quite impressive. Decided to give myself an unneeded adventure and take the train from Denver to New Orleans. So, during my very long layover when I was unsatisfied with the breakfast options I did some quick yelp homework and gave this place a try. The agave latte I had was quite yummy. As was the cinnamon roll pastry although I am pretty sure those aren't made in house. The interior is so pretty with great paintings and wallpaper. The seating is a little weird. There are a couple of 10 person booths (one table with three benches in a u shape). When I visited, most parties were one individual or 3 folks max. But I ended up inviting someone to share the booth with me and that felt good. So, maybe there is something to it. read more

Meddle Coffee in the West Loop is as advertised, a psychedelegance coffee shop. The mural fantasies, by Jason Brammer, on the walls surround patrons with gorgeous hallucinatory images upon entering the front door. On our recent visit, we were greeted with a smile and offered the intriguing menu. We ordered the Cafe Miel and the Gingersnap Trainwreck. The cafe miel had a rich coffee flavor which was delightfully accented with honey. So tasty! The gingersnap trainwreck was a festival of coffee gently merging with spices and honey. This fresh flavor sensation was a wild new discovery. We loved the delicious coffee at Meddle which was enhanced by the gorgeous fantasy displayed in the art encircling us. Yay! read more

This place was awesome! We'll definitely be back next time we're in the area. The menu was creative and everything sounded so good, I was having trouble deciding on what to order. Our barista Chris recommended the "wake & bake" latte, which I ended up loving. The presentation for our drinks was so pretty; they even poured a swan for my boyfriend's Cortado. I stopped by with a couple friends this past Saturday afternoon 15 minutes before closing. The barista was helpful with recommendations and the drink was delicious. I'm glad I stopped by before heading to Union Station to head back to the burbs. ICED MAYAN MOCHA (12 OZ) - 4.75 4.75 for a 12 oz mocha is pretty darn good in 2024. The mocha had a slightly spicy kick after every sip and it wasn't too sweet. I really enjoyed this drink and it's been awhile since I enjoyed a mocha. It had a strong chocolate flavor and I could still taste the espresso. Solid option for sure. My only regret is not copping a bag of beans while I was here. There's quite a few Dark Matter cafes in Chicago, so definitely stop by at one of them and give their drinks a try! read more

I went here for the first time today with my mother. The store was not high in traffic, however the barista seemed quite agitated when taking our order making a slight remark about my drink having a lot of syrups in it however, it only had vanilla in it with a hint of honey, and a dust of cinnamon (so one syrup! Lol). As if my drink was complicated! She then told my mother they had Splenda dismissively when she asked because she only drinks that due to dietary reasons. Once given the drink at the self serve noticed instantly they don't. Then the same barista tried to explain in a very condescending way how truvia is basically Splenda..... mam they are not the same thing. We got a refund and left. Will definitely not be back. Got the agave latte and a ham & cheese croissant. Agave latte was delicious and not too sweet with it served at the perfect temperature (not scalding but just hot enough to drink right away). The ham & cheese croissant was fine too but I wish they could warm pastries there. The croissant was also wildly expensive, at $8-9 for a cold croissant. I was in town visiting a friend and Dark Matter was described as the best coffee in Chicago. As a coffee snob, I said we must go. Saturday morning we set out for Dark Matter and it was well worth the journey. I ordered an iced Latté with honey (Miel I believe) and it was perfection. My friends ordered a mocha, and black coffee. We sat inside and caught up on life and discussed the weekend ahead. The space was large with tall floor to ceiling windows, and abstract artwork. Wanted to have a cup of coffee after my chiropractic visit and saw this wasn't too far away. Decided to stop in to do a little work as well. Place is nice with a few tables but seems more like a grab and go kind of place. It's street parking where you pay at the pay box so if you plan to be there a while you'll be paying a few bucks to park. There's lots of cool artwork to check out. I like the Agave Latte. It's $4.75 for a medium. This is made with chocolate and cinnamon and pretty sweet. It's good with non dairy milk. Options include almond, coconut, and oat. Also there's a few things to eat. Mostly granola bars and those kinds of things. I like a Tao Bar. It's about $2 each. They have a few flavors. Coffee is the main thing here of course. It has a few muffins and pastries There's not a lit or room inside so expect it take stuff out with you. read more

I stopped by this coffee shop on my way to HMart. The sign caught my eye and so did the inside. My eyes were attracted to all the artwork on the walls. I liked that they had novelty items for sale. They even had tiny coffee/espresso cups which I thought was too cute. I can't remember the name of the coffee I ordered but I do know it had agave in it. The drink was silky smooth. It was great to have on a cold morning running errands. I also ordered a pistachio flavored donut. It was the perfect match to have with my coffee. The drinks are all good and I appreciate the variety of non-dairy milks, although they will set you back a little extra. Pricing is a little on the high side for my student budget, but the quality is good, so I highly recommend stopping in for a treat now and again. read more
