It is a vibrant, modern cafe staple known for its standout bakery items like their Strawberry Cream Croissants (that looked incredibly decadent), artisanal coffee drinks, and reliable breakfast sandwiches. They do have some gluten-free baked options like the pistachio muffin my wife enjoyed. Also, they have non-bread breakfast and lunch options if you are gluten-sensitive or celiac. The place is popular, based on the queue that went out the door when we went there over the past weekend. Due to its proximity to major downtown attractions like the Art Institute and office buildings, long lines will happen during morning work rushes and weekend peak hours. But it's worth the wait. For my money, the chocolate croissant, stuffed with rich chocolate mousse, is class, and will ensure you won't go hungry. At all. In fact, I had half of it in a Ziploc for two days, and it still tasted amazing. The chocolate mousse alone will give you a rush that will send you blasting into outer space. Their morning sandwich was pretty good with scrambled eggs, cheddar, bacon, avocado, and tomatillo sauce on toasted semolina. A popping spot for a reason! The first day we walked by, the line was literally looped out the door. We were there during a busy weekend, so I'm not sure if that was busier than usual, but it definitely looks like this place can get crowded, and I see why! Came here for our first breakfast in Chicago! The decor is super cute and there was a charm to having the extremely loud train running overhead every 5 mins! I got the banana foster latte and morning breakfast sandwich. The latte came with an almond cookie and it was pretty good, the sandwich was also good but I expected the salsa verde to have a slight kick, although also good. I walked over from my hotel right at the time they opened, and it was raining. There was no line, only a handful of people waiting for their order. I got the pistachio croissant, shakshouka pastry, and berry crunch oatmeal. It took about 20-25 minutes, which made no sense because the pastries are in the case and the oatmeal......is oatmeal. I suspect they opened without having all of their prep done because the delay made no sense. Their staff looked frantic. The croissant wasn't filled, it just had pistachio cream on the top with a couple of nuts. I would order the shaksouka pastry again. The egg was cooked well, and the tomato was very good. We arrived before the 8am Saturday opening, and it was already open with a line that moved fast. There was a large selection of delicious looking things in the case. I picked a chocolate croissant while my husband got a cinnamon roll, and of course, we tried each other's picks. The croissant was absolutely loaded with chocolate cream. It was delicious. The cinnamon roll had a cream cheese frosting. Both items were quite large, so it was good we didn't buy more items or it would have been too much food. What I got: - Sunrise Burrito: 3.5/5 - I'm a bfast burrito gal, so I had to order this. It was super hot, fresh, and filling. The burrito was getting super soggy overtime bc of how steamy the fillings were. Unfortunately, the tomatillo sauce didn't really provide any additional flavor. I wish they cut the burrito in half so it's easier to eat. - Iced Latte w/ Oat Milk: 5/5 - I think I got a good one that day bc it was DELISH!! I saw this place from a mile away way and instantly made a beeline. I knew my sweet tooth would be out of control when I walked in and boy was I right. Everything looked good! I really wanted to try the s'mores bar but I'd have to get it whole as they don't serve pieces. I settled for the chocolate chip cookie, a classic, which never disappoints. It was nice because they asked if I wanted it heated up, which I've never had asked before! Let me just say, on a cold day, a warm cookie makes such a difference! The cookie was soft and was up there as one of the better tasting chocolate chip cookies I've had. I def. relished every bite. Thankfully I had enough self- control to not get another but if I didn't, I def would have. It was 11am (not so late in the day), but they didn't taste fresh. The apple pastry was flavorless; the apples were tired; and the crust was chalky and unappealing. The cinammon roll was cloyingly sweet, like something in a shopping mall. Chai latte was good. Breakfast sandwich was inoffensive, but had those ho-hum slightly overcooked eggs you find everywhere (and I guess I was dreaming of some free range wonders). It was packed They have plenty of indoor seating along with a few outdoor tables, but my favorite part was the open-air design. The huge windows let in so much natural light and make it the perfect place to enjoy a Chicago summer while people watching. One of my friends who lives in Chicago told me this place has the best hot chocolate in the city. I was in the mood for a latte instead, so I ordered one along with the avocado toast. Both were really good, and even though there was a small line to order, the service was quick and the staff was friendly. I also noticed lots of people working and studying here, so it definitely has that neighborhood café vibe. The highlight for me, though, was the VIEW. The café overlooks the elevated train tracks, so you can watch the trains go by every few minutes (check out the videos below!). Avocado toast with salmon which my wife really liked. We had various croissants, almond, strawberry and my favorite, chocolate. My wife had a scone, which she liked. Coffee was very good. Seating inside is limited, especially when customers seem to be constantly flowing in which is a testament to the quality of their offerings. For me, it was noisy inside so opted for outdoor seating even though it was hot outside and still had to deal with the noise from the overhead train. I ordered the protein bowl and a cold brew with tiramisu cold foam. The bowl tasted like a standard pre-made microwave meal you'd get at Starbucks -- very mid, lacking flavor, and nothing I'd go out of my way to order again. The coffee was the bigger disappointment: I asked for cold brew topped with cold foam (specifically not a latte!), but it came out tasting like MILK with zero coffee flavor.
