Came here after work with a friend. It's a diner and I feel like it was a true diner experience. The waitress was sweet and attentive. There is also plenty of seating and it could definitely accommodate a large party. This is a typical breakfast for me, and they executed it well. Loved that you could swap your toast out for a pancake! Heard the bacon is good, so I'll definitely be back.

This is definitely a 5 Star place taking consideration that this is a greasy spoon diner. Surprisingly there's not many of these kinds of places in Gainesville especially within the center of Gainesville. Just a very solid breakfast place and I look forward to coming here for lunch.

The service here was great and the wait staff very friendly. I ordered the country fried steak breakfast with a side of potatoes. I found everything was Cooked well, but under seasoned. My daughter ordered the western omelette and thought it was a bit greasy.

Darrell's deserves five stars because of a combination of elements. First, the staff is extremely welcoming! I went for breakfast and thankfully it wasn't that crowded so we we had a very personalized experience. It's an open-faced kitchen and even the cook was personable. I even saw one guy who's a regular stand at the counter and have a nice chat with them. I love that down home feel! Secondly, as I mentioned, it's an open-faced kitchen and sometimes that type of transparency can make or break a restaurant. I'm glad to say that proper sanitation is being used, the kitchen was clean, and so was the dining room. During my visit I even witnessed the cook wash his hands several times and changes his gloves to avoid contamination. A+ in my world, because cleanliness is always an important factor for me. Now, the food. In wonderful diner fashion, it has all the normal choices--from breakfast to lunch and dinner. Prices are definitely fair and reasonable. I opted for eggs, grits, sausage, and a cinnamon swirl pancake (only 1.25 upcharge). While the former three aren't anything to write home about (although it was definitely tasty) it's that pancake that's gonna have me driving across town to get. It's huge, fluffy, and actually not too sweet. They must use cinnamon sugar because some parts were definitely crystallized. I Loved that! Gave it a nice crispness on the outside. Yum!!!

My husband has raved about Darrell's for a while, and we finally ate there together yesterday. He had only ever had breakfast there, and lunch was decent, but nothing outstanding. My husband did order a side of sausage, and WOW, YUMMY! The service was quick, orders were correct, and everything was a good temperature. My husband got the combo with chili and a half tuna sandwich. The sandwich was fresh and delicious while the chili was meh. I got a Buffalo chicken wrap with potato salad. The Buffalo chicken wrap was decent, but the potato salad was really disappointing. The potato salad was bland, some of the potato was undercooked, and the chunks of potato were really big. We both ordered sweet tea and it was good. I wish I would have just ordered breakfast because that might have been a better experience. I would definitely return to try breakfast. Rating from F to A +++, I give it a B-.

I was very excited to try this restaurant out after seeing so many positive reviews. I came here around the time they opened on a weekend and was maybe the fifth person there. Service was efficient but not stellar. I ordered the breakfast burrito and asked for extra crispy hash browns. The burrito was good but a bit too wet and the hash browns were not crispy at all. Ambiance is like a deli. Prices were a bit more than I expected. I would not come back.

Discovered this place by accident while trying to find somewhere that was not only minority owned but served pancakes. This place doesn't have a lot of reviews, and they haven't been open very long, but they're in a popular shopping plaza located directly behind my friends house and we decided to try them one morning. First, when you pull up from the outside it does not look as spacious as it is on the inside. There are probably 20 to 30 tables, which can seat anywhere from parties of 2 to 6. There is a bar traversing the length of the kitchen, and currently that was covered in menus and all sorts of desserts (more on the latter in a sec). We were served by a wonderful waiter named Chris. He was able to discuss some of the things on the menu with us and when my friend pointed out that he thought there was red velvet cake on the counter, he said "it definitely is and if you want I'll bring you over a slice at the end". We were sold! Our food came out very quickly was piping hot. The pancakes are like the ones you would make at home: the right amount of brown on both sides, kind of crispy on the edges. They came with a heaping container full of warm butter (which I love because it makes it more spreadable). I do feel like they should give you more than one container for the syrup because their pancakes, while they're not huge, they are very absorbent. The eggs were to die for! Think of waffle house eggs but not as wet. And I know for a lot of people that sort of wet egg is really, really desirable (and I am one of those people), but there was something about the way these eggs were made. The amount of American cheese they used in them and the fact that they required absolutely zero seasoning. We got what referred to as a 2-2-2. It's two hotcakes, two choices of meat (we chose bacon) and two eggs. The bacon was not very crispy, but definitely cooked to perfection. They also do not charge for coffee with breakfast, which was a pleasant surprise! We opted for the red velvet cake, and the slice was HUGE, so we decided to get it to go lol. Total was about $24 for two. Will be returning!

We like this breakfast. It's simple and for us not outrageously overpriced. We always have a good time. We sit in front of the cooks and end up having a blast with them. Not had lunch as we love our breakfasts so this establishment suits us well. Treat people nice and with respect and 9/10 times it's a glorious day! read more

We keep coming back! Yes doggone it. It is the best place to go for breakfast or brunch. Truly the tastiest omelet in Gainesville... every one on the menu. We've tried all of them. Friendly staff, great cooks, excellent service. The specials are worth a try too, you won't be disappointed. It is a little noisy, maybe down the line they can find a noise engender. One of the newer brunch spots in town. Came here with some friends on a Sunday morning around 10amd and glad we came when we did, because not too much later it was slammed. Prices were reasonable, menu pretty standard for a breakfast and lunch place. I had the country fried steak, which was good. Most of my party had the Oreo pancake special which they seemed to like. The food came out quickly and our server was kind and attentive. Definitely a good option in the area. read more

The food is great. The wait staff is beyond rude. You put your name on a list. After waiting on the list for 40 Minutes and multiple people being sat in front of us, we asked what was happening and that we were more than happy to sit at two small Tables. The waitress threw her hands up and screamed at us in front of the restaurant & proceeded to kick the rest of the patrons waiting out the door. Absolutely ridiculous. I hope Darrell can find better help because this lady was atrocious. read more

The food was great diner food. I love breakfast foods and enjoyed the pancakes, potatoes, and waffles. I would recommend the cinnamon swirl pancakes the most. However, the most important note is that the service was not good. Our waitress was kind and smiling to every other table but us. We are not sure why, and she later avoided us as much as possible, and was clipped when she had to speak with us. I would go back, but only when it's empty. Hopefully another visit will change my mind. read more

I wanted to love this place. Everything about it was setting up to be one of those places I look forward to. But nope, didn't happen. I do wonder if I should try again since it the problems were mostly attributed to the service. Our waitress was really friendly at first but then serviced died off. It took forever for her to come back to take our order. We saw our food sitting on the counter for a really long time before it was finally brought to us. It was mostly cooled by the time we got it. Hubby ordered a cup of coffee that he finished well before the food arrived. No refill was offered until he asked when our food was dropped off. Pretty disappointing overall but I don't know that it's always an issue here. read more

Came here for breakfast this morning. It was crowded but we got seated as a group of 6 pretty quickly! Service is decent but there are only 3 servers and 2 cooks for the whole restaurant. The whole time we were amazed they were able to keep everyone happy and push food out fairly quickly! I would definitely go back. This feels like a small town diner! Not to mention the prices are so good! $12 for 2 eggs, hash downs, toast and country fried steak you can't beat it! An unexpected new hometown gem for breakfast, brunch or light lunch. Signature dishes are familiar but just quirky enough to be interesting. The fam loved it and we'll be back to try more menu items. Exactly what we were looking for! Fresh made biscuits. Country Fried Steak with biscuits and gravy was delicious. The biscuits were delicious. Service was on point. We went to Darrell's for the first time today and it was excellent! The prices were reasonable and the food was great. Our waitress, Patricia, was friendly and immediately made us feel like we were regulars. The hash browns with cheese are to die for and my husband says their gravy is the best in Gainesville. Darrell's is a solid choice for breakfast especially since its neighbor, Peach Valley Cafe, experienced a fire and won't be reopening next door. I ordered the design your own omelette with cheese, onions and spinach and my friend had the pancakes. My omelette came with hash browns and biscuit and both our meals were delicious. Service was excellent. Taking off a star because they only serve margarine, rather than butter, and my biscuit was cold, which I felt should have been served warm. The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch all day until closing at 3 pm. read more

It's a diner and their food does the job. I came here on a Tuesday morning it was relatively slow and I ordered a Philly cheesesteak omelette for myself with the coffee and a side of potatoes and toast, my party of four Also ordered a burger A breakfast burrito and some pancakes. For being as slow as it was; I am not sure if it was understaffed or if the staff was just inefficient but the service was relatively slow in taking my order and bringing it out. I will say I have had similar omelettes in the past from several different places but this place was very average the eggs seem like they needed seasoning the steak inside was relatively under season as well and the whole meal was just lackluster. The ambience was a stereotypical diner slightly reminiscent of a Waffle House. The staff seemed like they were indifferent about a customer service experience and I think that might be the reason that I gave it 3 starts. Average food, average service and average vibes. read more

When we walked in there was no other customers there. We almost walked out. Glad we didn't. We were on a trip from Fort Myers to Indiana and Darrell's Diner served the best breakfast we had on the trip! Kudos to the chef! Keep doing what you are doing, cuz you do it well! If you guys are looking for a good breakfast place, try Darrell's (it's on 34th/Archer) behind Hooters/WOB. It's a big space, high ceilings, and really clean. They have typical dinner breakfast food and burgers/sandwiches. They are open daily for breakfast and lunch and you can get the whole menu anytime. I'm telling you the guy who owns makes the most PERFECT eggs and omelets. I seriously don't know how he makes them so fluffy and amaze. They also have GREAT hash browns with all the Waffle House style toppings, without the likelihood of contracting Hep C. The restaurant is locally/minority owned and they give 20% of their profits to animal rescue. I've been three times and the place is never busy, I feel bad because the people are sooo sweet and wonderful. Give it a try! read more

We went during THE busiest time so we were lucky to find parking in the cramped but free parking lot. The hostess let us know there was a 35 min wait for indoor seating for 2. Outdoor seating was available, but we decided against it since it was a hot n sunny day in the 90s. We were ok with the wait and gave the hostess my name and phone number to get a text when the table was ready. While we waited, we walked to Serpentine plant shop across the parking lot and shopped a little. The text that our table was ready arrived 34 minutes so it was timed perfectly with the end of my shopping... we were seated soon after walking back into the restaurant. We had a corner table near the drink prep/coffee station so we had a front row seat to the preparing of many different teas and coffees while we decided what to order. A note about the table / seat size, we are skinny people and the seating fit us well but anyone somewhat wider would have trouble being comfortable. The high top tables might be a better option for those guests. The entire restaurant was packed when we came in and remained pretty full for our visit. There are 2 single-occupancy restrooms to the far left of the main entrance. They were clean enough and stocked appropriately. We were served by Jane and she answered all our menu questions. We ordered a cold matcha latte, chai latte, Mexican Coke, crispy potatoes, afternoon hash extra egg, 1/2 mushroom toast, and a turkey club no lettuce no bacon plus desserts (to go) chocolate chip cookie, puff pastry, and cinnamon roll. Jane brought out our to go desserts soon after the order. Our drinks arrived minutes after. However, our food took a bit longer (which we expected with a 100% full restaurant and Jane apologized for the wait, letting us know our food was on it's way about 20 minutes in) around 30 minutes. While we were waiting, there was punk rock / alt music in the background and a bunch of people's conversations going on so don't expect to have quiet dining if you go during a Saturday busy brunch. The Turkey Club was on thick Texas toast with dill in the mayo and tasted clean, fresh, like a delightful treat that grandma would make on a hot summer day. My husband's hash and crispy potatoes were the right amount of crunch and spice. The crispy potatoes had chunks of lime in it that were alarmingly sour but somehow complimented the dish. My mushroom toast had a delectable sauce topping with fresh scallions on french bread. We were very satisfied with our choices and had 1/2 my sandwich leftover plus our desserts to bring home. Many of the guests left empty plates when leaving so it seems their food is a hit! The only reason my "atmosphere" rating is missing a star is that our table was unfortunately near one of the restrooms so we would occasionally smell the disinfectant odor when someone opened the door. This was just a seating "feature" so of course it could not be helped. As far as other smells, we did notice that the kitchen, even if it was nearby, did not waft any fried food odors or smoke so their cooking area ventilation must be top-notch. All in all, a great foodie experience, cost about $100 with generous tip. Jane provided super customer service. We would come back for brunch or lunch here again, just not at the same table area

A bit of a long wait for breakfast/brunch style items. The cinnamon roll was not done well whatsoever, the roll itself was over kneaded which created a thick and heavy dough. Not the fluffy type of cinnamon roll you would expect. When our food did come out the Dutch baby was partly burnt, it did not taste as such but it was a bit flat in regard to taste. The potatoes in the hash and the big break were burnt. I wouldn't consider it crispy because they were so overcooked I could barely get my fork to go through. The taste of the hollandaise did redeem the dish a tad, however for $90 including tip it was not the dining experience I would come back to.

They'll really spice it up with lots of hot pepper and mouth-numbing Szechuan pepper corns and will not hold back if you request so (see the receipt pic I posted). I've also had the mapo tofu, cumin lamb dinner and dan dan noodles here and it's been a 20/10 every time. I posted pix of those here too. Probably the best dan dan I've ever had. I recently visited with my family and left feeling utterly disappointed. Our experience was marred by a series of unwelcoming policies and pricing issues, leading us to leave before even ordering food. Firstly, the restaurant enforces an unusual and frankly absurd policy: a $3 charge for sharing food. Although each of us planned to order individually, the mere presence of such a rule felt like a direct disrespect to us as customers. It's bewildering that a restaurant would dictate what patrons can or cannot do with food they've purchased. This policy alone prompted us to leave immediately after reading. Before reading this policy and asking about it we had ordered drinks. So asked for the bill of the drinks and were found with excessive transaction fee for card payments, which only adds to the discomfort of dining here. In today's digital age, penalizing customers for using cards seems unreasonable and customer unfriendly. Lastly, the pricing did not even justify the overall experience. Even without considering the additional charges, the menu prices weren't even reasonable. An omelet for $12 is not great. In conclusion, my family and I were left with no choice but to seek a more welcoming and reasonably priced dining environment elsewhere. It's unfortunate, as we were looking forward to our meal, but the restrictive policies ruined it. I would never recommend this restaurant or any with these types of policies especially to those who value their money and freedom in their dining. read more

Darrel's Dog Gone Good Diner is a hidden gem that left me thoroughly impressed! The Philly cheesesteak omelette was the highlight of my visit--bursting with flavor and loaded with tender steak, melty cheese, and perfectly sautéed peppers and onions. Each bite was like a warm, savory delight that truly hit the spot. The service was exceptional from start to finish. The staff was friendly, attentive, and made me feel right at home, adding a welcoming touch to the entire experience. Pricing was more than fair, especially given the quality and generous portions. It's rare to find a spot that balances fantastic food, great service, and reasonable prices so well. Overall, Darrel's Dog Gone Good Diner delivered on every front, and I can't wait to return.
