I visited on a Saturday right before closing since they are not open Sundays. I mainly came for the cracklins and ordered both regular and wet just to try them out. The food is not the healthiest, but the wet cracklins are a definite must try. There is usually a short line to get your food, but it's worth the wait. Service is friendly and efficient. read more

This is a tradition must-stop, location for most of my family when they travel through Louisiana. I am sorry Chick-Fil-A, but your chicken nuggets do not have anything on Famous Foods Chicken nugget/strips. Have you ever had food so good that you want to eat the seasoning at the bottom of the bag ? It has been years since I ate Cracklin, but the smell was so inescapable I wanted to try one. Big mistake..a few minutes later one more then you know the rest. Between four people a 1/4 pound gone, vanished, poof. Do not be disheartened though, we had a 1/2 of chicken nuggets also, but they did not make the very short distance from Lake Charles to New Orleans. Lawd ham mercy! Nobody told me there's wet cracklin in Lake Charles. My Hubs and I stumbled up on this store and the line was long to the street so I knew we were in for a treat. We ordered a $5 bag of both their soft and spicy (wet kind) and their dry cracklin and OMGoodness they were goof! By the time we got back to our hotel, both bags were empty. We legit drove all the way to Famous just for their crackilins. The drive to LA was worth it. Out of the three flavors, my partner in crime and I had a hard time deciding between the soft & spicy and the original. Each brought its own game and it was such a tough call. I think, for MPIC, he felt the soft & spicy edged out the original due to the right amount of heat and spicy flavor even though he prefers a crunchy texture. Although when putting any kind of sauce on something will almost always lend itself to softening the subject. I can see the argument in favor of it though. For me, I had to go with the original. Crunchy, flavorful, tender, and just right. Just grab a bag and I'm good to go! On another note, the restaurant was clean, well-kept and had plenty of seating available. Someone at a funeral suggested this place and let me tried one of their cracklings and it was really good and different. Customer service was horrible! When we found the place, I noticed they had different kinds. When I asked could I sample one of the other kinds, I was told they don't offer samples, but I could buy a sample. What type of foolery? Then the lady proceeds to tell us that if they gave out samples then they would lose a lot of money. Who sells samples? Plus we weren't from the area to scam you out of money for samples. I ended up buying the spicy ones because we had to search for this place (not from Lake Charles at all). A lady in line offered me one of hers to try and I'm glad I did because I didn't like the smoked ones. It was just seasoned cracklings. The cashier (Jasmine) had a bad attitude and most of the people in line were complaining about it but still making purchases. Also the cracklings are weighed and there is a price list for the different amounts, but instead of there being a set price per pound it's almost like a starting price. Example: a 1/4 bag is like $5 (on the menu) but if they weigh it and it's more than 1/4 then they charge you more because they are eyeballing the measurements. Why even have a set price?!?!? They also offer cooked meals which smelled amazing. In my opinion, it reminds me of places that treat customers any way because they are the only one in town so you have to go there. If you don't care about customer service then this place does have good cracklings but if I wouldn't of tried it before going I wouldn't have know by just going in. I picked up a 1/2 pound of smoked cracklin's, a 1/4 pound of spicy, and a couple of links of boudin while driving to Baton Rouge. The smoked cracklin's are, hands down, the best cracklin's I've ever had in my life. To give you some idea of how good they are, I ate the entire bag in an hour. The next evening, I noticed the paper bag on the counter, and ate the crumbs, and the crumbs were just as good. If you are anywhere near here and like cracklin's, you have to go and try these. It is worth a trip though. The spicy cracklin's were too spicy for me, and too salty, but the first 6 or so were good. Probably would have been better with beer. I ate about 12, and could not handle any more. Really cleared out my sinuses though... Another indicator of how good they are is that I bought 5 Lbs to bring home with me to California. Keep them in the freezer and reheat them in the oven at 300F for 5-6 minutes and they are almost as good as new. The boudin was good. A good mix of spice, rice, meat, onions, and flavor. If you want the best boudin though, head to Market Basket on Nelson and get the smoked boudin there. It blows everthing else out of the water... read more

We got their boudin, dry cracklins, & the last container they had of frozen gumbo to-go. The boudin was awesome! Just wish they had some Texas Pete or similar hot sauce! Cracklins we're good but I bet wayyy better when fresh! (We got the last of what they had left!) They were pretty dry & the skin part was so hard I was scared I'd chip a tooth, so gave to my dogs. We ordered brisket and sausage from Famous Foods for our Christmas dinner!!! It was simply amazing! We picked the food up on Saturday to have on Christmas Monday!!! I am so happy we made the decision to do that because the meat was just marvelous! I heated everything in a 275-300 oven until hot and very tender and it tasted like the day we bought it!! We made our own country homemade rice dressing and potato salad and baked bbq beans and I'm so pleased with EVERYTHING but especially the meat from Famous Foods!!! Visited here recently, I had the brisket plate lunch and some cracklings. While waiting on my plate lunch to be prepared, I snacked on a few cracklings, which were some of the best I've had around. Good ratio of skin to meat. Not "break-your-teeth" crunchy like some places I've gone to. I ordered the regular, but I hear that the spicy variety is more of the "Soft 'N Spicy" and I regret not ordering those. Upon receiving my brisket lunch I was disappointed. The potato salad was about as basic and bland as possible. The baked beans were drab, with lots of liquid. The brisket was really fatty and tasteless, with just a hint of a smoke ring. The dirty rice added a little bit of savory flair to the meal but was common by most BBQ places' standards. The BBQ sauce covering my brisket was one of the better items in the Styrofoam box. A tomato based sauce with a hint of sweet and spicy added in. Reminds me of the sauce from Wagon Wheel. It still didn't hide the mediocrity of the meal though. The ladies behind the counter were nice and helpful. I had high hopes for "Famous Foods" but I was unimpressed by far. For your own assessment, they are open till 6 pm and the drive-through is open till 7. Looking forward to seeing more reviews here to see if they were just having an off day. read more
