I had bought some cinnamon rolls at the farmers market from Shambala Ancient Grains because they had told me they were a tree nut free facility. When I got home to heat them up I was curious about the ingredients since they are also gluten free, and I am grateful I checked because they use almond milk in them. So I saved myself a trip to ER by checking the ingredients list but this is super concerning and frustrating as this is life threatening for me and others. I was told confidently and on the websites home page that this was a tree nut free facility, and definitely will not be purchasing again due to concern for dishonesty in what is in their products. read more

Probably the 5th or 6th failed time trying to get food from this spot over the past few years when I visit Mt. Vernon. They are always closed or out to lunch or something... finally found the new location and they no longer make any menu items... meaning it's no longer a restaurant and is only functioning as a bakery. While the food was very good, I was expecting a more grater variety of veggies in my veggie paninni. So why 2 stars? Not sure if they were understaffed on the holiday, though the kitchen staff seemed full of bodies it took way too long just to order. I waited in line 20 minutes and still was about 3 people behind. But I notice that they are taking orders over the phone quite rapidly while for in person it's going very slow. After the line starts complaing and when we say we will call they try to stop that by saying good will take 40 minutes to come out. +1 hr really? He did they are making is not that delicate to make. This place is a gem for the GF community. Even my bf who isn't gluten free rated their breakfast sandwich (the biscuit one) as a top 10 in his lifetime of sandwiches (and he is obsessed with breakfast sandwiches). I would have attached photos but they didn't make it long enough to be photographed. We also walked out with a selection of bakery items (scones, cookies, cinnamon roll things) that I'm looking forward to trying. The food prices are extremely affordable and I would have also walked out with a couple loafs of bread however the price on those are a bit steep for me. read more

Great little spot in historic Mount Vernon. My son is allergic to wheat and peanuts and he had so many options! We've only sampled items brought to Farmer's Markets but their storefront is pretty wonderful. Everything has a vegan option, but our party had a beef-based burger, fish & chips, and tons of fries. The fries are freshly cut and the ambiance is pretty chill. When you enter there is a pastry case you can select from. If you prefer to dine-in, menus are available at the register and you order there. Your order is then brought out to you. I loved the homey vibe and they have wine and beer pours if you choose. As well as espresso and free-refills of soda fountain drinks for purchase. All in all, I'm grateful for this spot. My allergy kid can eat a great meal and get a sweet treat to go. Really cool place! They are not only gluten-free but also free of many common allergens AND extremely vegan friendly. There's a health-conscious theme here with the grain blend they use and also a whole line of adaptogen drinks. But the vibe is not "health food bar", it has a very warm and intimate, and a little quirky, cafe feel. The staff was really welcoming and helpful with all the questions I had. Order at the counter, and they bring the food to you if you're eating in. It wasn't inexcusably slow, but they take their time making the food, so this is not the place to order a meal if you're in a rush. The drinks come out much faster and if you order a baked good they'll grab it for you on the spot. I had a Red Pepper Reuben with Coleslaw, Carrot Cupcake, and Chaga Latte. I went with the vegan option for the reuben - if the vegan cheese option had just been one generic flavour, I would've gone for the "regular" version so that I could get the Swiss for my reuben, but they actually had different flavours of vegan cheese (the worker mentioned cheddar, swiss, and provolone) so you can actually get a suitable replacement for the standard recipe when you veganize here! Anyway, this sandwich was delicious! A little messy to eat because the roasted pepper and sauerkraut made it very juicy, and I think vegan cheese doesn't hold things together as well as real cheese, but the mess was worth it. The gf bun was quite good - not as tender as traditional bread, but the wholesome flavour was very nice. Their coleslaw was very interesting too, it tasted like there might've been tahini in the dressing and I was into it. The cupcake was indistinguishable from a non-gf carrot cake and the coconut frosting was really good. Finally, the latte, which I got with hemp milk, was also very nice. I'm not sure how much of the subtle nutty flavour came from the chaga and how much was just the hemp, but it was a nice change from the usual hot drinks I get. The only thing I have to criticize is why do they not have house mugs for drinks when you dine in? All the food was served on ceramic plates, but my drink came in a to-go cup, which was very disappointing. Otherwise this was a great experience - I doubt I'll have the chance to stop in Mt. Vernon again but I'll have to make a beeline for this place if I do. read more

While the food is incredible...the demise of restaurants is the ordering process and general service. We walked in right when two people walked in ahead of us. The employee took their coffee order and asked us to sit at a table and she will come over to take our order. Seems like a food order first would make more sense and then prep coffee. All well and good. Then she went off to prepare the coffee drinks; which she then spent 12 minutes preparing. Meanwhile 5 people walked in the door and a second employee; who was not visible for the first 5 minutes of us sitting down proceeded to help everyone with a quick order for bakery items. Most definitely a broken process--take our food order, enter it for food prep and then help the quick line. Should have been obvious. A second table of two ladies sat down during all this and they kept looking around wondering if someone will ever come take their order. Meanwhile, again, more people have come in and placed a food order at the counter and then sat down. WTF. Why? Two ladies still waiting. And now the second employee is at the bar preparing our coffee drinks (only knew this because she brought our drinks). We were so happy to find this place for vegan food but now questioning waiting 30 minutes for food. We will come back a third time to give this place another chance since there are few, if any, vegan options around. Hope the process for ordering improves. Really great, yummy gluten-free food. Family friendly. My husband & I both had the fish & chips & it was so delicious! Best I've had, especially since being gluten-free. My 3 year old & I both had smoothies & they were also yummy. We came during the tulip festival nearby, so the lunch rush was pretty hectic. A memorable find even for those who aren't gluten free. THE GF WASN'T A PROBLEM. The menu had plenty of options to choose from. I opted for a vegetable hash and my partner got the falafel. The gluten-free bread that came on the side was simply incredible in quite an unexpected way considering I am not gluten free. However, the rest of my meal was doused in dried parsley which made it incredibly difficult to enjoy. My partner's falafel sandwich didn't have enough flavor and felt lacking in herbs as well as size (it was about a half sandwich). The banana coffee cupcake was more muffin like but enjoyable to eat. The spicy ginger cookie had a very subtle and smooth ginger taste and was quite delicious also. THE ATMOSPHERE MIGHT GET ME TO RETURN. Throughout our lunch, people kept coming in to load up on loaves of bread and cookies. This was such a friendly environment and you can tell a lot of people really care about this restaurant. The interior is adorable, the staff are considerate, and it was a good place to spend time. Granted, it did take quite a while for our food to come out so we really got to appreciate spending time here. I can review only the bread, service and coffee. I buy the loaves of bread, slice and wrap in parchment paper, and then I put the loaves in a zip-loc bag and freeze. It freezes beautifully! If I want croutons, it is easy to slice into squares, season and toast. The employees are knowledgeable and extremely helpful. The coffee is super delicious! My husband is not gluten-free but always gets something that is sweet. He says their cookies, etc., are wonderful! read more

Five star because I just really love this place! I've ordered out (too often) and dined in multiple times. If I had to estimate, I'd say this review is based off of 15-20 "visits". I've tried a good portion of the menu between my own orders and sharing with friends/family. There's not been many things that I wouldn't rate a 4-5 star! Their drinks are delicious but some feel really high priced considering the size and listed ingredients. The only time I've had a complaint about food was once with the elephant ear it was so over cooked and chewy that I literally couldn't even bite a piece off. I ended up having to throw it away, which was extremely disappointing considering the cost and having had 5 star reviews for the same treat several times prior. For the "average" person this place is going to be a little pricier, but I'd say 9/10 it's worth it! read more

Stopped in for a get together brunch with some gals. The ordering was very confusing as there seem to be two different places to order. You have to ask see the drink menu as it's not posted anywhere to see. Food wasn't spectacular- it tasted and had the texture of food that had been frozen and warmed back up. My chai was downright terrible. The seating is great, though. Lots of places to sit and chat with folks. Really liked the decor. I took a scone and a load of bread home to my gluten-free brother, and he said that it was some of the best gluten-free baked goods he had tasted. In search for new vegan options I finally decided to give this place a try. Being that it rated so high I was hoping for a delightful experience. I ordered the falafel wrap and it was not tasty at all. I have never really had a bad falafel experience but it was pretty bad. The flavors weren't there and it kinda tasted like what I picture non-vegans think vegan food tastes like... grass. Whatever sprouts (alfalfa I think) were used, it was very overpowering. I hear this place specializes in their vegan and gluten-free baked goods and maybe I'll give those a try one day for an opportunity to give this place a better rating but I'm pretty turned off to try a food item again. All the goods here are exceptionally good, for being gluten-free! A lot of gluten-free stuff is dry, tasteless, or simply not as good as "regular" food. Not so here! To profit off of this name is the very definition of one of the worst forms of cultural appropriation. In addition to shamelessly profiting off of a culturally and spiritually meaningful term for Buddhists, they serve beef!! I was worried about not being able to find any vegan options when I visited Mount Vernon, WA, so I was excited to find Shambala Bakery and Bistro! I went multiple times during my stay. The food was delicious! I especially love their gluten-free bread. It tastes delectable. I'm not a fan of the decor, but that didn't distract from my experience. It's also a bit confusing that they have two entrances; one seems to be for the bakery and the other, around the corner, is for the bistro. There was not a waiter at the bistro to take orders; instead, we ordered at the bakery and then walked around to the bistro. I believe this was a temporary arrangement, however, while they settled things down. Someone did come over to deliver the food and refill drinks, which worked out. The best part: my family asked Shambala to make me a vegan birthday cake and they did! It was chocolate cake inside, which is my favorite. Delicious like the other food. I was very grateful because I didn't expect to be able to have birthday cake (since I wasn't aware of any places that made vegan versions nearby), and it was a delight to see it come out! I will definitely be visiting Shambala again the next time I am in Mount Vernon. read more

I don't love giving small businesses any less than five stars, however the past couple of times I've come in the quality of the food and baked goods does not meet my expectations given the price point. I ordered the Wish and Chips for $16 and the breading was unfortunately undercooked and gooey. I ended up peeling it off and just eating the cauliflower inside. The saving grace of the meal was the tarter sauce that came on the side and the delicious fries! My mom's $24 pizza was similarly under-baked with a doughy crust. I think both the meals tasted good, they just needed a few more minutes in the frier/oven. Also, a few days ago I tried a fairly bland cupcake with a texture similar to bread topped with a sweet but underwhelming icing that offered very little flavor other than sugar. I will say the staff is always friendly, and the gluten free breads are very good. The sun butter cookie is also a favorite! read more

I was excited to find a healthy Vegan options restaurant not to far from Burlington where I was staying. The ambiance and decor was weird, and the staff wasn't over friendly - but not rude. I had the Vegan Pancakes with Aronia Berrys (Chokeberries). Great taste but a little dry - after adding some real maple syrup, it was awesome. The Bakery goods were all Vegan and all looked amazing. Oh god, please no. Granted I'm not vegan, in fact I'm far from it, but this place is a hard pass. We had to stop here since we were driving through and needed a quick snack. We ended up getting a cookie sandwich, a fish and chips (vegan), and some other pastry that I've likely blocked out of my mind now. The people were rude, the place was dirty, and maybe it's because I went there during busy season (basically summer time here is busy season), but the pastries and the food was severely over priced, dry, and tasteless. I went ahead and bought one and it was absolutely delicious, but who can afford $20 for 4 bagels? I love food; all of it, any and every kind, but it caught up with me. My gallbladder was removed and I found out that I have diverticulosis. I ate like an average American before. Needless to say, that changed after the Dr. restricted me to a gluten-free diet. Two days in a row we visited Shambala. The word "extraordinary" doesn't even come close to the food quality we experienced. I found this place via Yelp, as I do for most every public adventure these days but I was not expecting this. We ordered the Nachos and Mediterranean Pizza. Both took a while to prepare (which we didn't mind at all knowing it was being made with love) and arrived absolutely perfect. I've attached some photos to show what I mean, but until you have your own food experience here you can't possibly imagine the texture, quality and flavors. I can't rave about it enough!!! Eat here.
