We were looking at this place for such a long time and decided to try it for the first time on a Thursday evening around 6pm. It was not crowded at all. We were clearly first timers and there were a total of 4 workers including the bar tender. We proceeded to wait at the register to ask questions and order but no one came to greet us or take our order. We stood there for 5 minutes and the workers just looked past us and never acknowledged us. I would be more understanding given it was busy however it was not busy at all with 3 customers dining. A colleague highly recommended Darrow's so we had to check it out. His comments on the service and atmosphere were bang on: fun, engaging, and interested in your dining experience. The food though was just OK. Love the fact they bring your samplers if this is your first time. Great touch. The jambalaya was full of flavour but I did find it a bit dry so did not order it. I had a Po-boy with turkey sausage. The bread was nice a fresh but the sausage was too thin and over-cooked (dry and crunchy). The side of Cajun fries was the hit of the meal. Wow. They are a 5 by themselves. The collard greens were nice and hot but had a very bitter after taste. They have 2 squeeze bottles of their homemade sauces. The green Alligator Sweat (great name) and hot sauce. Both were ok. The Cajun Bowl was 'fun'. They hide the hot turkey meat under the greens so it stays warm. Lacked real depth of flavour, i.e. needs more seasoning. Reasonable sized portion. So a fun experience but not 'wowed' with the food. read more

I really wanted to love this place but unfortunately I was underwhelmed. Three stars is kinda being generous. First the good points are, customer service was great. I placed a phone order and the girl who helped me was very enthusiastic and helpful. When I got there the people working were very nice. The beignets were yummy, and the food was warm. Unfortunately I was tolled fries or salad were included with my plate and I received neither one. The shrimp was encrusted in corn meal which was way too crunchy and dry. The jambalaya was ok as my boyfriend put it. I had the surf and turf poboy which was ok. The meat which is supposed to be tri tip reminded me more of pot roast. Everything was weirdly packed separately even though it was a plate dinner. And only have one size drink which looks like a ten ounce for almost two dollars for soda. For a dinner, poboy and one order of beignets the total came out to 39 dollars and change. For that price I was expecting more than what I got. Hands down, the best southern/New Orleans food I've ever had. Norwood the owner makes you feel like family. I love the guy. Once you enter the doors, you become part of the family. The service, the staff and the food are amazing. They have several tv's, typically playing sports. You order at the counter and the food is brought out to you in a timely manner. My first time there, been meaning to stop by. I had the special, 4 pcs of catfish, 4 pcs of shrimp, and 4 oysters. Ive been looking for a place that knows how to cook catfish, and I've finally found it. It was great, light and flavorful, the shrimp was split, and mad it look bigger, wasn't too impressed with the oysters, but the rest was great. My wife had a chicken po' boy that she loved. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Last night was the first time I had even heard of this place, and when I walked in the first thing I noticed was "RUM BAR" (I headed strait for it). As soon as I sat at the bar I was greeted by the most kind (and gorgeous) bartender named Char. She was absolutely AMAZING (and not to mention she makes a killer Manhattan and French Connection). The gumbo there is to DIE for and they bring it to you piping hot! Food was tasty, the restaurant was clean and orderly, service was great, and the staff was friendly. What more could you want? As first-timers, we were offered samples of the gumbo, beans and rice, and jambayala. All were delicious, but created a conundrum of what to order. We settled on the combo platter of oysters, catfish, and shrimp. We chose sides were collard greens and beans bayou. We opted for the catfish and shrimp to be grilled. This provided a nice contrast to the crisply fried oysters. The roll was grilled with butter, mmmm. Everything was seasoned and prepared properly - not too salty or spicy and not over cooked. The ingredients weren't overpowered so we could taste and enjoy the food. We finished with an order of beneis, which were light and cinnamon-y. The best part of the evening, though, was the warm greeting by owner/manager Norwood. He was truly focused on ensuring that each guest was provided a great dining experience. We're visiting for only a week and will certainly dine there soon. read more

I was invited to Darrows New Orleans Grill in a Carson, CA for a birthday celebration for my friend Charles 57 birthday. This day was not just an ordinary day. This is a day that everyone has been scared out of their minds over the Coronavirus flu (it's funny, but not). We where suppose to have a big party, but only 8 us of showed up. The restaurant was practically empty because of the Coronavirus scare. The restaurant is really nice, love the restaurant decor, and the staff is really friendly, and I can't forget about the bartender she makes great drinks. (Sorry, I am not good on remember names). We were giving food samples and everyone loved it. Norwood also told us about the history of the restaurant and how it came about, Everyone ordered food and it was delicious, my friends and the birthday boy was happy. (Prices are very reasonable, and you get a lot on your plate). They even allowed us to bring in a birthday cake. I am not much in to cajon food, but my friends love it!!..I ordered the chicken wings, tater potatoes salad and the green were delicious!!, seasoned just right and not salty. We were there for awhile and started noticing more people were coming in. This is a fantastic restaurant for family and friends and they have lots of parking (its free). I would highly recommend going to this restaurant. We will be returning with a big crowd for the friends that wanted to stay low because of the Coronavirus, we know that they will love the restaurant, ambience, the food and the great hospitality at the restaurant. My sister-in-law and I ate here after attending a quilt show in the area. We were not familiar with area and I found this restaurant on Yelp. We were greeted by the owner and asked if it was our first visit. He then seated us and provided menus. We were then given samples of several of the entrees. We placed our orders at the counter both of us ordering the fried catfish with 2 sides. I had greens and Cajun fries and she had red beans and rice both were served with warm French bread. The food was served hot and it was delish. The restaurant is well appointed with a Cajun theme. I would definitely come back when in the area. So I finally made it back and today was my 2nd time, bad, bad, bad! I ordered a side of jambalaya and when I received it there was no sausage in it. So I took it up front and ask if there was suppose to be any, they said "yes!" So I told him there was none in mine and can you add some? He went to check and he told me that they ran out of sausage. I asked him well then can you discount my jambalaya since it's only dirty rice now. He told me no, so I asked to return it. We'll he did after giving me a dirty look! I told him why should I get the shit end of the stick when it's the restaurants fault for selling a bogus product and running out of sausage!!! Bad management and service! He should of just given it to me for free since they are cheating there customers with food that is not to quality!!! I've been a customer for over 25 years, since they were on Venice bl. Very disappointed in this establishment this time, plus the crab poor boy that my wife had sucked!!! One small crab that was fishy! If you've never been here before, parking is a bit confusing because Darrow's is on the outside of what looks like an apartment complex. Where do you park? Then their hours are not always right. I came here the other night to find a sign on the window that said they're closing early. Their sandwiches are good.
