There were other customers talking in Bengali and the servers were talking to us in Bengali so it made us feel more at home (we are Bengali). The food was good to average to be honest, but when you crave comfort food, even average comfort food can seem heavenly. So, I cannot give this restaurant less than 4 stars. Have been to this restaurant twice in a span of 20 days and the food seems to be consistently good. They have really flavorful biryani both chicken and goat. We also got jilebi which is their special sweet during the month of Ramzan. The jilebis were thick than I am used to but tastewise they were better than any of the one I have had in the recent past in this area. Only downside is their service is slow. I haven't been able to visit my family due to COVID travel restrictions so I thought why not order food that reminds me of home? And boy it did not disappoint! The Kachi biriyani was melt in your mouth good. More oily than my mom makes but hey I was treating myself! The shik kebab and moglai paratha were also great. Our family loves food! We try different restaurants all around the world & we order a decent quantity of food so we can taste a variety on the menu. After a very long time I felt compelled to give a negative review. We are paying customers and should be treated as such. We were completely ignored. Even when we asked for a napkin with the appetizers they said they would give us one at dinner???? The waitress forgot to bring out the samosas (we never got them), they didn't bring out any raita, no salad... & then they brought out a dish of raw potatoes. She took the potato dish back and didn't come back with it anymore. I asked her for the dish and she said she can't fix it, yet she charged me for it. She brought me an extra cup of tea that I didn't ask for and charged me for that as well. The service was horrible. The butter chicken was good. The pani puri was good. The Karahi chicken (we ordered boneless and they brought us with bone and we just ate it) was raw and red. The beef was good. The daal was good. The naan was good. The potatoes were raw and they never did bring it out again saying she doesn't know what to do about it. The mango lassi tasted like they made it for diabetics. The tea had no color but tasted okay. The rice was cooked. Overall it wasn't a good experience, go somewhere else to eat this really wasn't worth it. Leaves me wondering why I left a tip. DK is taste-TAY! I'm never disappointed when I come here. The food is good and the prices are about average for Indian fare. Afternoon buffet dishes are great and rotate during the week. It's the best time to come (IMO) bcz the restaurant is quiet but does a 180 for dinner and there's lots of hustle and bustle going on. The lunch buffet is daily until 3pm and features 11 dishes for $12.99. There is also a dinner buffet on Monday and Tuesdays which has 14 dishes. They've recently added fish curry to the buffet and it was a welcome addition. However, it's LOADED with bones so you need to eat it super cautiously. When you walk in, the open space is welcoming and the colors are vibrant. Can you smell it? The curry? The faint smell of garlic? Tandoori chicken in clay pots? The fresh naan. *my mouth is literally salivating at the moment* The massive flat screens are a bit distracting but after a few minutes you're able to tune them out. After you've settled in and ordered your water, make your way over to the serving stations (proud of yourself for choosing the buffet bcz you get to sample, almost, the entire menu) and 'plate-up'. Once you've made it back to your table you discover the server has brought fresh, hot, glistening naan over. Sit. Feast. So, I flew back to Boston on the last flight before they started canceling flights due to the blizzard. Instead, I ordered a few appetizers and nan. I will start by saying that the service was great. They quickly attended to me and prepared my food fresh upon ordering. Since this was an impluse visit, I had to pay with credit card, and they didn't get mad at me for busting it out for an order under $10! Now, there is a $10 minimum stated on the menu, but since there was a blizzard maybe he was being nice! In any case, I felt very bad about it and I try not to do that to small businesses, but I truly had no cash on me. The value is great! $1.50 for nan! $1.00 for a giant veggie Samosa! And they were delicious! I also ordered Chotpoti, to try something new, which was a chickpea, tamarind, and egg dish. While I didn't particularly care for it, it was freshly prepared and tasty for what it was, and would probably be pleasing if that was what you were expecting. I know it has tamarind, but I wasn't expecting it to be as tart as it was...some how, I was expecting something creamier or something, I don't know. My fault, I know. So far, this place is tasty, quick, and quite inexpensive! They even have a cool little breakfast menu!! Last night, we decided to try a new Indian restaurant and chose Darul Kebab. When we first received the food and opened up the packaging, you could see the separation of the oil immediately. I ordered the butter chicken with garlic naan and my boyfriend ordered a fish curry with garlic naan. When I took my first bite of the food the butter chicken was incredibly sweet. I ate some portions of it but it felt as though whoever the cook was had forgotten or mistakenly included sugar instead of salt. Look, Darul Kabab. Figure out what your shtick is. I'm rooting for you, I really am, but I'm not betting on you. I've prepared a list for you, Mr. D. Kabab, for your convenience. Once you have addressed these issues, I shall return. Otherwise, I fear you will go down in flames like the ill-fated Banjos. 1. Get rid of the banjos on the wall. They were cute when the restaurant that resided in the building was called "Banjos," not Darul Kabab. 2. Are you a fast food, eat-in, or take out place? The only reason I ask Is because when we ate there our food came out after a reasonable wait, but there were people waiting around for take out since before we got there and were still waiting after we left. Their faces looked like this :( 3. Fire all of your wait staff, or train them how to be waiters/waitresses. Here are some guidelines that I know have worked for other establishments: (a) Refill my water when it is empty, or approaching empty. If the customer asks for refills more than three times over the course of the meal, he will be less than enthused. (b) Be less awkward. Seriously. Stop it. (c) When a customer orders something, please actually bring them what they ordered instead of forgetting about it and then still leaving it on the bill. (d) The owner was very friendly and came over a few times to check on us to make sure we were happy. If all of the staff have his enthusiasm and demeanor, most of your problems will go away. 4. Either rearrange the tables, or get rid of some of them. The waitresses literally were walking along the walls because there was no walking room between tables. All these things considered, the food was very good. Overall, I think they deserved 2.5 stars, but I am giving them three because I love these types of businesses and want them to succeed. I have a feeling they are just experiencing the problems that most new restaurants face and are still working out the kinks. The food is all there. Tried the Aloo Paratha bread - thick and fluffy good. The DK chicken curry was standard but delicious, not too hot, just right. Thick cubes of chicken, tender and juicy. The DK Lamb Kebab was also excellent - served with a small salad - too many onions were the only real complaint. An oil vinaigrette on the salad. Includes a yogurt dip for the ground lamb and herbs. I can't help but feel as though Darul Kabab is having an identity crisis. A tuxedo t-shirt immediately comes to mind: is it casual (burgers! pizza!)? Or is it fancy (white tablecloths!)? Nobody knows. DK is located in what used to be a KFC. And yes, it still very much looks like an old KFC. There's no escaping it. The Darul Kabab logo is ultra-sleek and modern, clashing with its menu/posters full of 90s script fonts. But why am I still talking about logos and fonts? My boyfriend seemed to enjoy his meal, while my tandoori salad was mostly iceberg lettuce and a little bit of dry, flavorless chicken. I did order a few other items, but I can't remember how they tasted. Every time I walk past Darul Kabab, it smells FANTASTIC! It makes me sad to see only 2-3 customers in there. So I've avoided coming here for a while due to a decor that isn't exactly chic. I was wrong. Went there for a late night dinner: vegetable samosas, chicken tikka biryani, aloo gobi with naan, masala tea. First of all - everything tasted fresh and cared for. Even at the late hour (we were the last customers of the night). Masala tea - started with this. Asked for no sugar, no milk. Came with leaves and cloves and smelled wonderful. Samosas - very good. Potatoes were in chunks (as opposed to being mashed). Temperature was good. Balanced taste. Good sauce. Solid. Biryani - had a light spice kick to it. Bit down on a few cardamom pods. This is important: presence of cardamoms felt like that means that it was cooked there and then with spices. Chicken was perfectly tender, flavorful, and present. Aloo Gobi - the cauliflower tasted fresh and crispy. Tomatoes went well with it. Tasted home-made. Naan - so I am a bread snob. Here, I really liked their naan. Inside it was slightly soft, outside great fresh texture. I am pretty sure it was just cooked. The main thing for me that seemed out of place was that the decor did not match the food. The food tasted amazing. The decor seemed cheap. I would recommend to change the ceiling, paint the walls a darker color, adjust lighting to be more table-centric. Why doesn't Yelp allow me to give Darul kebab 0/5? The only thing good about this restaurant is the first four letters in its name. On a serious note, the (20$/8 pieces) "kebabs" were too fatty, tasteless and dry (considering we received no chutney with our order). Even after telling aunty that I would make her restaurant popular among students who only eat Halal meat, all she did for us was replace a dry naan and a decent raita with two cylinders (they were so shitty that they don't deserve the stature that seekh kebabs command). The problems didn't immediately after consumption of (I repeat) dry and tasteless cylinders. My friend felt the cylinders tease the inside linings of her stomach well into the next day. I've been holding out because despite this place being a block away from my apartment, every time I walk by it, it doesn't seem to be populated with people outside of the staff. To me, that's not always a very good sign. I stopped in to get some take-out after a long day of work and school, and I was less than impressed. I had a fairly simple order: Chana Dal, Aloo Paneer (I think-- it was one of the spinach dishes), vegetable rice, garlic naan, and two diet cokes. Given the fact that it seemed that they were just slopping stuff in bowls from what I thought was the warming station up front and then microwaving them, I didn't have many hopes for my intestines post-meal. What I didn't expect is that I'd get things I didn't order when I opened the bag at home. It was seriously like Christmas opening the bag, full of surprises. I did get the spinach dish and the garlic naan, but I definitely did not get Chana Dal-- I don't know what it was. It was tasty, but not what I ordered. I also did not get two orders of vegetable rice-- I got two orders of rice with chunks of something orange colored in it. They forgot my Diet Cokes (and I had asked specifically if they were in the bag, was told yes)... I'm only miffed because I was charged for the Diet Cokes, and really should have looked before leaving, but left without them. When I called back they insisted the cokes were in the bag, but since I had already gone home I wasn't going to argue. I think someone else got my cokes, or someone else got my order. No clue. Now as someone with food allergies (which I told them about up front), it is completely unacceptable that they muffed things up the way they did. I was stupid and ate things until my friend mentioned "Yeah, this isn't what you think it is" and then sat in terror for a good few hours waiting for the havoc on my stomach to begin. Luckily- no havoc. Overall, I HATED the idea that a bunch of food was sitting uncovered and unheated in the front of the restaurant. That little glass covering didn't do much to assuage my fears of cross contamination or general bacterial growth in the food. I was also really miffed that it took SO LONG to get the food, and when I got it, it was wrong except for two things. The taste of what we got wasn't bad, but the mix of general sketchiness and lack of attention to customer requests (I have a food allergy should be a serious one for restaurants) will force me to pass. I'll just go across the street to Annapurna when I'm craving Indian-type food, or out to Inman. I definitely will not be back here without some serious changes. read more

My motto is try everything twice. But I have too many observations that I just can't suppress. In detail: I judge DK to be very authentic. They certainly haven't figured out western expectations about speed or service. Let me explain - I've been to India, and despite the many amazing aspects of Indian people and culture, the general approach to service and operations is very, um, different. There is little emphasis on speed and efficiency, and unfortunately when you're running a fast food restaurant (let's face it, DK isn't Kebab Factory) these are qualities that matter. I love Indian food, I love cheap Indian food, and I love Indian food close to my house. I want to see DK succeed, so here are some observations that I hope management will address soon. 1) Website is down. I couldn't call in my order ahead of time - very, very frustrating. 2) The banjos are all still on the walls!! Ok, fine, but at least take down the strange summary recounting the history of the banjo. Lazy? Weird? Both? 3) After I ordered, the girl behind the counter said I would pay after they bring me the food. I said, "Well, I'm not doing anything else right now, why don't I pay now?" She looked at me funny, started to protest, and then let me pay. Ten minutes later, she brought a hot bag of food out to another take-out customer, and then had the guy pay, making a big deal about walking his credit card and receipt back and forth across the restaurant. 5 minutes later, that guy left with a slightly colder meal. 4) After I paid, the girl said it would take twenty minutes, and I thought to change my order to a delivery and walk home. She said I couldn't do that. Now I've worked at a successful restaurant and the golden rule is not to say "no" to a customer - you figure out how to say yes! Then she said to ask the manager, who was on the phone. I looked around and rethought my plan - everything was super disorganized, and doing anything outside of their normal process probably meant I would never get my food. Also, there is a $2 delivery charge - no thanks. 5) Although there were only 2 take out customers, the register girl forgot what I ordered! She kept showing me other people's receipts and asking if they were my order. Meanwhile, the manager, and the girl, and the driver all appeared very confused about how to work the computer. I can't really begin to relate how disorganized how all this was, and sadly, how spacey this girl was. 6) I peaked in the back at the guy washing dishes. He was washing them one by one, v e r y slowly, and I'm not sure if they were using the standard wash-rinse-sanitize process. I don't know, I didn't ask - I'm just saying. I'm also not a stickler for these things, and they were using the dishwasher. 6) After 20 minutes, I get my food, check the bags, and go home.
