Very different from how the Alaska Airlines ad describes it. It's a total dive bar but the staff were on point with quick service. We talked to a lot of locals and had a great time (they were really nice!). One local guy even bought us shots! Free popcorn! What's not to like? The only type of people who won't like this bar would be the upper class (think Bellevue and Bill Gates for my Seattle friends lol). read more

This is a great bar if you can go when it's not effing packed. Maybe people go out to been seen but I don't and I appreciate bars where I can sit and have personal space and talk to my friends without screaming. All that being said, the drinks are cheap, the popcorn is free, and the music is usually pretty good. And it's a great place to sit back and watch people. read more

This was the last stop on our voyage through Alaska before heading back to the lower 48. Real cool spot with cheap drinks, popcorn, and a juke box. We struck up conversation with some of the locals--people who has seen some things and had stories to tell. The bartender (Lonnie?) was a real sweet gal and made a couple of out-of-towners feel like regulars. I couldn't think of any better way to end the trip. Darwin's is high on my list of places to revisit when i find my way back to Anchorage. read more

Love places like this. Was intimidating to go in by myself. But the bartenders are nice af. If you're easily offended don't go in because the crowd is super friendly like family that they just say things with no filter. Looks old but still clean. Many bars claim to join the ranks of "dive bar", but this place takes the cake. Yes, it's outdated and maybe a little dirty but the service is decent for the amount of people that are packed into this place on most weekends. I will continue to visit this bar whenever I'm in town. My only suggestion is more seating and maybe better bathroom situations but I know no one associated with this bar gives a shit about these suggestions... Poor service. Granted the bar was busy, I stopped a bartender walking by to place another order and she held up her hand to symbolize I'll be right with you. 15 minutes later no one came back and I walked up to the bar to find a different bartender making drinks. I asked her for another beer to which she replied, "I'm done" with a belittling look on her face. This place is only good for a last resort. read more

My hubby and I decided to grab a few drinks there after lunch. Big mistake! When I first walked in, I noticed the Asian bartender was three sheets to the wind. She could barely stand up. She complimented me on my shoes. Listen, if you are a woman in Alaska and you actually take time for yourself and do your hair, makeup.. IDK put on a nice outfit.. the other bar patrons seem to act like you are a pariah or something. Listen honey don't get mad at me because your morning routine consists of shaking the woodsmoke out of your hoody and wiping the sleep out of your eyes before you walk out the door. I've been in Alaska for nine years and it hasn't stopped me from dumbing down my femininity. Needless to say, crap talking from the other female patrons. As my husband and I decided the atmosphere was too stank for us.. we left. As we were walking out the door, the bartender brays drunkenly.. 'Real women don't drink beer'. Which was what I had been drinking. I'm sorry sister, real women don't get drunk at work either whether they are behind the bar or not. read more

Worst bar in anchorage. Buddy tripped because I pulled his arm, we wouldn't sit down when bartender told us to, and we took too longer to order beers they refused to serve us. And kicked us out. Felt like I was at a hipster convention when we were there. read more

There can't be a better bar in the city. Was there for a week and visited many...Darwins was the clear winner. I collect dive bars, and this is hands down one of the best...comparable to the Blue Ruin in NY and the First Amendment in Boston. If you can't love this place, you should give up drinking and go to a juice bar. read more

The bartender, Barbara, is the best around. This place is great! One of my favorite watering holes while in Anchorage. We spent the start of the Iditarod there a few years ago. Best time and worst hangover I've ever had. Be there again this year to sing the Iditarod song with Wanda, Dori, Julie and all the girls. read more
