I didn't mean to eat at Hana Haru last night. I meant to have dinner a few doors down. I happened to park in front and I decided to peek in and ended up staying. Glad I trusted my gut last night because it was an awesome experience. Parked in front - street parking. No meters but free after six. Pulled in just before. I've not had issues parking in El Segundo. There are lots as well as residential side streets if you can't find any on Main. At least that's the case for me. Just remember to check the signs. I sat at the counter and experienced attentive, friendly and great service. There are tables as well as a semi-enclosed booth (for larger parties). TV over the bar playing an NBA game. I wouldn't say it's a spot to go to, to watch the game. It's all about the food. Again, it's all about the food. See pics. Went for a Cucumber Salad. Liked it the least. Wished it was marinated longer. Fresh and crunchy but would have enjoyed almost pickled. And more rice vinegar. Anyway - liked it the least but still liked it enough to polish it off. There was the Yakitori. Really enjoyed the flavor and sauce but it was white meat so on the dry side for me. I prefer dark. Massive salad which I didn't - couldn't finish. Then there was the Sashimi. It wasn't on the menu but i asked about a Sashimi Combo. 15 pieces and what has been the best Sashimi I've had this year so far. Pieces melting on my tongue - epitome of Umami. The red snapper had a nice light sweetness that made me save those pieces for last. I wanted to order more but was so full trying to polish off the salad that came with the Yakitori that I just promised myself that I'd just have to come back. It's Happy Hour all day on Mondays according to the staff. Guess I know when I'll be making my return visit. A definite hidden gem. read more

I want to say that this place is a little above mid when it comes to sushi. The prices are a little insane for what you get. Rolls taste like something you would get at a place that is a "Club", with the name Sam in front of it. The sashimi is fresh, but man I wish I didn't pay that much. I wish I would have checked out yelp before walking in here. The food is absolutely disgusting. Let me say that I'm not a picky eater. I'm the total opposite. I it everything. Everyone always tells me my opinion of food doesn't matter because i like everything lol. BUT, when i say something is bad, i promise you they whole heartedly believe me. These are the worst $78 I've ever spent. My friend and I got 2 rolls (can't remember the names) and the tempura with chicken teriyaki. I'll go through every item.... Miso soup - extremely salty Salad - not bad, but the bottom was completely covered in watery teriyaki sauce Teriyaki sauce - ridiculously watery Tempura - the only decent item Chicken - the worst item on the table. The moment I looked at it, i had a feeling it would be dry. I covered it with teriyaki sauce, but it was so so dry, it was hard to swallow. I brought it up to the server, she offered beef (i don't eat beef), and I asked if it could please be replaced. I was very nice about it. When I said "I'm sorry I don't eat beef," she just looked at me and said, "I'm sorry." I went back to my friend to take a seat. She came back with a small plate of chicken and teriyaki sauce, my friend took a bite of it in front of the server (as did i), I felt bad but I told her it was really bad. "Oh I'm sorry," was all i got. Not a partial refund, not a "can we get you a roll or something else?" Nothing. Rolls - i honestly did not care for them. The fish did not taste fresh at all. If you want good Japanese, go to the city of Gardena. You'll find the BEST places there. To end this, I do not recommend this place at all. If I could give it a 0, I honestly would. read more

I have been going here for years. But I am not sure I will return. The owner never waits on us but always rushes over when we pay (with cash) to take the money and the tip. I am not sure the hired help ever gets the tip. And the price of most of the menu has gotten so expensive that I have found a nicer place in El Segundo for the same price. On my visit to Hana Haru I came in the evening. I ordered the kushiyaki along with a dynamite roll. The decor of this place is pretty simplistic and invokes the feeling of a regular Japanese sushi bar. It felt clean and tidy. The waitress was kind and the food took a slight bit of time (not unexpected for a dynamite roll). Now the kushiyaki was pretty forgettable. Not as tender as I would like with only the taste of beef and nothing else. It's pretty unremarkable. It has a salad with dressing, not much to say there. The dynamite roll was pretty good. Very rich and creamy and the scallops were fresh though the shrimp less so. The shrimp, carrots, and onions provide a nice crunch and mellow sweetness that amplifies the slight sweetness of the scallops. The mushrooms provide a nice unami to the roll, though it might be slightly too salty with soy sauce. The roll fell apart a bit too easily though but was very delicious. All in all the sushi is worth it, the kushiyaki is not. On the plus side, the waitress was kind enough to take it off the bill. Very appreciated. read more

Why it took me soooooooo long to come back is beyond me! My taste buds were gnawing at me for some grilled fish collar, "didn't matter which one, just get one!" kinda thing. I don't remember this place having it the last time I came through (fine, it was forever ago and it wasn't even a full experience) so I chanced coming through hoping they did. I was delighted to learn that not only did they have one (yellowtail), they had two kinds! And the salmon collar was on the specials board - 2 for basically the price of one! I was also curious about their chicken cutlet, so got one of those and an iced green tea to wash it all down. I came through at opening hour so it wasn't a surprise I was the first one in. It didn't take long until peeps started coming through, mad little by little, more and more of those tables were getting occupied. I guess it's safe to say they have a following! I sat at the end of the bar and since I was first in, I was tended to immediately. And so it began: MACKEREL SUSHI: 2 pieces. Generous in terms of size and it has that main taste I was going after. Yum. CHICKEN CUTLET: Came with rice, miso soup and salad. Chicken was breaded thin, crispy on the outside and soft and moist inside. Sauce added to taste. Miso was hot and hearty good. The dressing made the salad, but gotta say they're really generous with this! Too generous, it's almost a meal in itself! BAKED SALMON COLLAR: Had I known it was this much, I might have skipped the chicken cutlet. It was prepped simple: salt, pepper and grilled to perfection. Nice little char on the outside but flaky and moist in the inside. Like with the cutlet, also came with tons of salad. Iced green tea did its job - refreshing. FOOD: 5. Everything I had was perfect! SERVICE: 4. Friendly staff. VALUE: 4.5. I had plenty leftover for a 2nd meal. PARKING: Street. It gets busy during lunch hour. OVERALL: 4.5. Unassuming and very good. Not really about the frills here. It's more "down to business", shall we say. The FM radio played KOST103. Commercials would come and go along with "the greatest mix of the 80s, 90s and today" (essentially from Boy George to Carly Rae Jepson) The fish case wasn't spectacularly decked out and showcased like some places you see but the fish was crazy fresh. The beer was ice cold. The ginger was snappy. What we had: SOFT SHELL CRAB ROLL, CRUNCHY ROLL, RAINBOW ROLL and a YELLOWTAIL HANDY. We walked in without reservations on a Saturday night at 6. We thought we might be in store for a rough night because of that but the freshness and creativity here were par excellence and left us wondering where all the humans were. Be one of those humans. It's a cute, lowkey spot that plays the kost103.5 jams (where my millennials at?) and the times we've gone, both weekends and week nights, we had no problem being seated right away with immediate service. The menu has a great variety of food outside of rolls, but trust me...you don't wanna skip on those! We enjoyed an amazing early dinner here with family. The portions were so generous and everything was delicious. We ordered combination plates and had leftovers for another meal! The service was attentive and kind. My toddler spilled her water cup all over the table and our server didn't bat an eye and brought us more napkins and a replacement water. In town for Candy Cane Lane opening night. My mom has raved about this place for years- working in El Segundo means knowing all the little haunts. Arrived just after restaurant opening hour, we are second seated table. Place was empty. Sushi bar chefs were still setting up and there were stacked fish on top of the glass case salmon, yellow table, etc stacked 4 high. Drinks ordered and came quickly. Ordered a few rolls, my husband ordered the combo teriyaki and cal roll comes with huge salad bowl of rice and miso soup. We order edamame and tempura as app. Edamame comes warm, over salted ( but I like it that way) and overall ok. Tempura comes -it's typical and fine.then the night went sideways. The tables are starting to fill up, one young blonde and a slightly older brunette are working the tables. I need more napkins as we had a green tea bag get messy, and can't see either server, I walk over to the sushi chef and ask- man, was he put out and made a big huff and puff about interrupting him. The young woman brought them to the table. Followed by my husband's meal. No sushi rolls. We watch as every table that came after us was served. My husband ate his meal.all apps were done, tea was refilled twice, the older brunette asked if she could get our check, and thought we were done. I said with some tone in my voice- we haven't been served yet. We had been there 40 minutes, people who came in 20 minutes ago were done and asking for their check. I asked my husband if he was supposed to get miso soup- yes but it never came. We see three more orders go by and I call over the older brunette- we would like our bill. There may be a communication issue. Because we next get the miso soup. I ask for the check again because now we are getting close to when we want to be at the candy cane lane line up. I am polite but clearly irritated. Lo and behold my husband's California roll arrives for his combo. I ask for a box and a bill, but to take off the rolls we ordered. Next to arrive is not the box, or the bill, but the rolls. I say, no thank you, and stand up get our check. And a box. They clear the sushi from the table including the California roll from the combo. As I am standing there waiting for the bill and the box. The sushi chef gets loud and says "there was this large take out order... and we got busy, and things." I cut him off with "no! We were the second table tonight, all these other tables were seated well after our order was in.He said "well we were busy tonight." I said "that isn't my problem." He screams " you are right it isn't. So I will take the rolls off the bill! And you can go! The older brunette comes by whispered I'm sorry I put your order under the others. How she is taking responsibility when I only saw her cleaning our table, was weird to me. I paid cash-$58 for 2 hot green teas, an ice tea, a tery/cal roll combo dinner (no miso until after it is clear we are leaving), edamame and veg tempura. Tipped the blonde who took our order 10%, and packed up the combo - husband went to go walk the dog. The blonde was kind enough to pack up the cal roll. And brought it over, as the chef is literally screaming "put it all in the trash!" No, "I'm sorry", no goodwill gesture of packing up the sushi to go. After seeing the unhygienic handling of the fish maybe they did us a favor.. They probably were just having an off night. We wont be back. I rarely give less than 3, food we ate earned 3, service 2, ambiance2. There are better places. Go to elsewhere read more

If it's your first time you definitely have to try their David's roll, makes my mouth watery just thinking about it lol. All food combination plates are great as well! I was in El Segundo and craved some Japanese food. I knew Kagura a chain of OK Japanese restaurants I had visited at another location. Kagura was a zoo with a wait and stressed out servers and staff, I notice Hana Haru couple stores down. Honest good food, I enjoyed every thing I had from apps to my combination plate. The rolls were good, the tempura was great. You get the feeling when a place has a zen and everyone is happy to be working and eating there. Nothing against Kagura but leave the corporate cookie cutter food behind for some real serious sushi, rolls and good food and service. Customer service was great and food were served pretty quickly. In terms of food, I thought they were not spectacular. There are definitely better sushi places. We ordered the beef teriyaki, sashimi roll and shrimp soy paper roll. - Beef teriyaki: This was probably my favorite dish of that day. Sauce were not too salty and with a slight touch of sweetness. The steak were juicy and fresh. It also came with a miso soup, how good was the miso soup? Well, let's just say that I didn't leave a single drop of the soup when I was done with my meal. - Sashimi roll: This was alright, sashimi were fresh, but I think the sushi rice could be better. They didn't feel tasty enough and rice were kind of sticky. - Shrimp soy paper roll: This was the most disappointing out of the bunch. There were just lots of meat but the they tasted really bland and again, the sushi rice was mediocre. Also, it's funny how I didn't taste any soy in this shrimp soy paper roll. Overall, this restaurant isn't bad but I think there are better alternatives. I don't like giving bad reviews, so after a few more visits and trying the other dishes, I would remember to revise my review again. read more

Since the pandemic, it seems eating options on main street have been limited and hit-or-miss. So sad that a number of our favorite spots have shut down but there are still a handful of spots that we seem to frequent now. This place has recently been our go-to when craving sushi and they have been pretty solid. What we normally get: We normally always start off with a spicy tuna handroll and edamame. Hard to beat those as starters. Then we're off exploring their rolls. Our staple rolls that we seem to always get are: 10. David's Roll 20. Hana Haru Roll Other rolls have been decent as well like the: 21. Sexy Roll 7. Popcorn Roll 1. Rick Roll Generally speaking, everything we've had has been fresh and presented nicely. I was immediately turned-off by how literally dusty and dirty the bar counter was-- especially considering that food is served off of it. I usually don't mind that kind of stuff, but it added to the subpar experience overall. We sat at the bar because we normally do when we go to a sushi restaurant. There was a menu in front of me that was soiled with soy sauce. I was really craving miso soup, which is normally served hot. Ours arrived lukewarm and extremely salty, and that was a huge bummer. The service was ok. The sushi chef and sushi quality were actually great, but there was too much about the whole experience that just really turned me off. I highly recommend getting here earlier OR pre-ordering your food to go because this place is always busy - as it should be, because their sushi rolls are very affordable. I like their philly roll (cream cheese, avocado, salmon), rainbow roll (with salmon, white fish, shrimp, tuna, and albacore on top), and albacore garlic roll. The food here has always been very good and the Sushi fresh. However, the way the owner yells at his staff from behind the Sushi bar is so unprofessional. He yells at them and degrades them in front of customers. Jonathan is is name I think. He will also go outside and smoke a cigarette and come back in and resume making sushi without cleaning his hands. He wears a mask but has long floppy hair just hanging freely. There is NO reason to treat your staff so terribly in front of customers. If you have a problem with staff, be a good manager and pull them aside and talk to them respectfully. El Segundo is a small town and news of this is already out in the community. Folks are going elsewhere because of it. Do better. read more

They're so bad, they're worth a review. This is the classic example of what having a good location means for a restaurant: they don't even try to do their job well, they don't even care about their customer, nor about the quality of the food they serve. I've been going to Hana restaurant for 5 years now and even after seeing the prices bursting up to 40%, I wanted to be loyal and supportive towards local business, but enough is enough. The quality of the food is really low, the service inexistent and the prices unacceptable. One last time I went, they got my order wrong, didn't apologize and laughed at my face because of my accent, for which they blame for having got the order wrong. It would be nice to see a better and more worth of a business replacing them. So long goodbye! read more
