What just happened?! These people are so rude it's epic. I couldn't believe them. I came in to pick up my boots. I stood by the pick up/drop off table for a few minutes being completely ignored, although a gal with piercing saw me. I went around the corner and waved at the owner. He ignored me as well. (!) I then approached the girl asking if she could help me. She gave me a deer in the headlights look and said with such a tone as if I was crazy: "Excuse me?!" Then finally came over to tell me with an attitude that they were open until 6:00 and closed now and it is 6:30 already (!) Ok, great, I did not know that. The doors were wide open. There were no signs "Closed". So I was sure the business was still open. Is it just me or the decent thing would be simply to inform a customer walking through your wide open doors that the business is closed? I mean, care to put a sign out? Instead they were all determined to have me stand there for as long as I wanted/had patience for and continue to ignore me.. What?? Oh, and I was picking up shoes that they said it was easy to fix only to call FEW days later to tell me that they couldn't fix it (it was a simple changing of a heel tip, btw). Well, I won't BOTHER them to come in neither after 6pm nor before anymore. And maybe you shouldn't either. read more

Why so rude? I dropped off a pair of shoes to have the rubber put back on the heel (it had come off). Nobody called me to tell me they wouldn't do the job, instead they just put them back on the shelf and waited for me to come in and claim them. Had they called I would have agreed to have the heels replaced rather just re-attached. When I said "why didn't you guys call me?" I was told "You made a bad decision when you dropped these off..." It's not like I they were $400 shoes, they were $60 work shoes that needed a quick fix!!! When I have been in this shop, I have been treated with a gruff, explicative laced unprofessional attitude. Why do all cobblers act like they are rock stars and the world should bend over and take it? C'mon guys, learn some customer skills. You are a service provider. Just because you are fewer and further between than plumbers doesn't mean you need to show me your metaphorical ass-crack. You would be hard-pressed to script a more contemptuous or dismissive customer service interface than what you get speaking with 'Dave Page Cobbler'. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the eccentric craftsman...the difficult artisan who's brilliant work shines through the knotty exterior. I have gone to dave page in the past, he did a great job fixing a boot zipper. He also took an entire week to do it. I went in again today, wanting new soles put onto my earth boots and he replied with a harsh NO, and just kept repeating back that it was impossible and he would not do it. Firstly, I doubt this man even fixes shoes as all of the work is dictated to employees. Secondly, anyone with 'cobbler' in their name, should certainly be able and willing to do a simple boot repair. I knew he was being ridiculous, not to mention rude and grossly stubborn. It was an easy fix, one I could almost do myself given more time. I called University Village Shoe Repair once I got to my car. The man spoke with a heavy accent but was incredibly kind and even stayed 10 minutes after closing so that I could get through traffic. Had some damage on my Sportiva Batura boots from some crappy snowshoe bindings. Dropped by the shop on Friday around lunchtime of July 4 weekend. Was interested to see how much and how long it would take to get the repair done. Albeit a minor repair, 5 minutes later I walked out with a repaired boot, no charge. Two pairs of my favorite boots have a new lease on life! The leather & rubber combo heels/bottoms were falling apart and what were once very nice boots began to look rather sad. I took them in to Dave who explained how the wet weather in Seattle causes the leather to expand and fall apart and how he could fix them. They were shipped back to me and they look just like new! $80 to do both pairs with shipping and tax. A fair deal from a shop I can trust to do good work for two pairs of nice boots costing several hundred dollars each to be wearable again. Totally worth the money. Do not go into this shop expecting to be coddled! It just isn't that kind of place (not a 4 star restaurant). Set your expectations ahead: honest, expert, solid work for a fair price with straightforward, intelligent service (no group hugs). Dave Page Cobbler was the cheapest I could find to replace both my birkenstock soles and foot beds ($70) and they had it done in only a week, where as other places told me to expect a month as they ordered my footbed sizes. I had (notice the past tense) pair of Lowa boots that I bought in Munich and had climbed many mountains with - Rainier, Baker, Olympus, Glacier, to name just some of the bigger more familiar ones. I really loved those boots. So much so that I had worn down my vibram soles and, based on reputation, took them to Dave Page to get them resoled. When I went to pick them up my jaw almost dropped to the floor. I could not believe it. What before had been a solid soled boot (one that one could safely attach crampons to) had been turned into a soft soled boot! My favorite boots had been rendered useless for mountaineering! What??!! So I asked to speak to Dave, telling him that there were no instructions whatsoever to convert my boots into soft soled boots. All he had to say (with dismissive attitude) was that everybody wants them like that... I could not believe my ears. It took a lot of control to not go slinging my boots across the counter... eventually it was agreed to reconvert them. No apologies. No cut in price. No courtesies. Just another wait for my boots. This was not the end of it. Even though I was finally back in my boots and hiking. Up to Lundin Peak, that one with the bronze plaque commemorating one who had fallen. My brother and I had just climbed past that crux up on the summit when I noticed my sole flapping in the wind... once again I could hardly believe my eyes. So back to that joker Dave again. After the third repair, for what should have been just one, my boots never quite fit the same again. What a waste. Of time. Of money. Of anger. Of boots. Avoid this guy like the plaque. I recently sent a pair of Asolo hiking boots to Dave to be completely re-soled. The polyurethane midsoles had degraded and the soles had separated from the boot. A local cobbler here in Reading, Pennsylvania told me they couldn't be repaired and suggested I throw them out. I got Dave's information through the Asolo website. Dave's email replies to me initially were very prompt and complete and courteous. For a very reasonable price he completely re-soled my boots with beautiful new Vibram soles. For a small extra fee he refinished the leather with Nikwax and gave me new laces. He turned a potential trash heap item into essentially a brand new pair of beautiful hiking boots. This store is the best. Had my Vasque soles replaced and they were far better than new after the replacement. Solid vibram, thick tread and nailed the front wrap over the toe. These will last forever. Felt expensive but they are like new so well worth the money. I would say the store is a hidden gem but judging by the myriad of boots lined up for repair I'd say they just need a bigger shop:) read more

I'm a little late with the review, but wanted to give Dave some credit for the work he did. I had a pair of Asolo boots resoled by him back in May. I shipped them from NYC on May 5th and had them back in hand by May 21st. More than reasonable, considering shipping times. My first test of the boots was with crampons on an ice climbing trip, which puts a whole lot of stress on the sole. They held up perfectly - not much else I could ask for. If I have any issues boots in the future they'll be taking a trip to Dave. read more

My boyfriend and I sent in 3 pairs of climbing shoes for resole. Two pairs of La Sportiva Mythos and one pair of Moccasyms. I have some mixed feelings about my shoes. From a customer service standpoint, I appreciate the email notification of the receipt of our package and the quick turnaround on the resoles. Overall the fit and edge of my resoles is good. My main complaint is that all of our shoes now have a sizeable lump in the shoe that can only be likened to the uncomfortable feeling of having very hard socks bunched up under your toes all the time. While climbing it's completely unnoticeable but once you have both feet on the ground it's extremely annoying. read more

Dave Page Cobbler is highly overrated. I've sent two different pair of hiking boots in to him for resole. Both failed shortly after I received them back. Dave Page is rude, arrogant, and quite condescending to be sure. At one time he might have been the master cobbler that he purports. But over the years he probably got too busy, hired inexperienced help, and became detached from the actual craft of cobbling. Which might explain his ugly attitude and lack of attention to detail. I've seen it happen too many times. When a man takes on more than he can handle, his work suffers. Be careful out there. read more

OK, I've got Dave figured out. First, he is the best in the business, and he has an expert team. I've had 3 boots resoled over the last 3 years, and he's done a perfect job. Second, he is a grouchy curmudgeon, and every time I go in there, he lashes out at me for some trivial issue. A year ago, he literally yelled at me for bringing in boots I had recently greased, I guess making it harder to work on. I went in this week, and I was expecting it. When I asked a simple question, he snarled at me --- true to form. Since I am an old guy, it doesn't phase me, and I made a joke about us old guys being grouchy. He cracked a smile!! I knew it --- the Mean and Nasty is all a show, and he's a good guy at heart. Now, if I go in there and don't get The Business, I'm disappointed. By all means, take your boots there, but expect to get kicked in your butt --- but don't take it personally. read more

I am super disappointed in Dave Page. I brought a very special pair of vintage shoes in to be fixed. Since this business has been around forever, I really thought they would value my special vintage shoes and take good care of them. They accidentally pulled of part of the heel material and then patched it with something not at all like the original. What's more, the attitude of the sales person/ repair person was very dismissive and not at all apologetic. No offer to do something different. I received no call about the accidental tearing off of the material. Very cavalier. I do not recommend this shop. read more

This is just a tip - don't drive out of your way to come here if you have high heels to repair. After a long work day, I drove here and was told upon arrival that they do not carry the parts to repair women's high heels. They were super nice about it...but I was disappointed that I drove all the way to Fremont in response to seeing great reviews, found parking, and they didn't perform this pretty standard repair. If I could give zero stars I would. I've never had such a bad customer experience in my life. The man may do good work according to the other reviews on here but I didn't even get to that point. I called inquiring about my hiking boots and asked if the repair could be in 2 days. At first I got a "yes" and then when I asked if I could get them in the morning on the second day as I am leaving for a hiking trip, I got a "no" with no explanation. Apparently Dave doesn't like when you ask why (no matter how polite) because he hung up on me. I got a "look, I obviously cant help you. Thanks for calling." CLICK. I read other reviews on here saying that he's short and to the point, but this was down right rude. Honestly, the guy is obviously relying on REI references and thinks he can treat customers like crap because of it. REI shouldn't send their customers over to him simply due to the fact that he is a direct reflection of their company every time they write a referral. I appreciate them taking the time to write a referral in the first place, but not if they're sending me to someone who obviously has no concept of customer service. A shoe repair is a shoe repair; it's not like the guy performs magic. There are a ton of cobblers in the Seattle area that will not only fix your shoe problem, but give you outstanding customer service as well. Don't go to Dave. This goes without mentioning that I got my boot repaired in ONE DAY by another cobbler (admiral shoe repair) who was more than happy to help. read more

I just sent Dave some Merrell boots which he had resoled (through REI) a couple years ago because the soles were starting to peel away. To be honest, the boots are 20 years old and could probably stand to be replaced but they were expensive, and I'm hard to fit so shopping for new boots is a pain. Merrell specifically said I should send the boots to Dave, and he has a lot of fans on the web, so that's what I did. I can see how some people find him brusque. I got an e-mail from him and spoke to him a couple times on the phone, and he's very direct. That said, he called when my boots arrived to tell me what the problem was, answered all of my questions, sent the boots back when he said he would, and most surprising of all, didn't charge me anything for the repair or return shipping, presumably because he had resoled the boots to begin with a couple years ago. In short, I can't fault him for anything. My boots are back in good shape. He cautioned that the latest resole might not work because of the overall condition of the boots, and that's okay. They are 20 years old, after all. But I appreciate the way he handled the situation. He certainly didn't need to do rework for free. I never asked for that. I think that says a lot about his work ethic. read more

Based on his shop's reputation for quality work, I decided to ship Dave my Asolo boots for resoling. I am very pleased with the results: Very clean work and competitive pricing. Dave had good, prompt communication via email, and a good turn-around time on the boot repair. I was also impressed that he took the time to email me saying he received the boots. When I was told by my gear store that my Asolo boots could not be repaired, I was quite upset. I love my boots and knew it would take a long time to break in another pair like these. Another hiker told me about Dave Page. I quickly Googled him and was disturbed about how many people could trash talk about a man who clearly had some skills in repurposing shoes of all sorts, even if I had to mail them to him. I was certainly hesitant on the process, even more so on calling to discuss with him after reading all the garbage online about him. So all you new readers, here's the skinny: Don't believe everything you read online. For Dave, it's business. It's not personal. This is my personal opinion, and that is, that Dave just wants to do his work and not listen to all your stories about how your shoes got in the condition they are in. He does not give a crap! I could go on and on about my adventures about how my boots got in the condition they were in, but why? All you pretentious people, tell your stories to those who want to hear it. Dave is a business man, and when I called him to discuss the pricing (the price list he has online is somewhat outdated, so I called him to inquire), he was very nice and kind. He gave me an approximate price, and I mailed my boots, without any story or anything! I received an email a few days later. I called him with my credit card, and he said he was about a week behind but that I would get them back shortly thereafter. I was surprised to receive them two weeks to the day after my mailing exactly. He even wrote a thank you note! The work on my boots was awesome. They look brand new, and I can't wait to get them back on my feet. Dave Page, Cobbler, is a professional through and through. He has an excellent product. Heartsick, I brought in a boot that had been heavily decorated with metal studs that had gotten ripped... not feeling sure anything could be done to fix it. I am BLOWN away!!! You can't even see where the tear was. They did an amazing job on my boot, but also healed my heart becasue they are my favorite boots! Dave is pretty blunt. I wanted him to repair one of my favorite sandals and he tried hard to talk me out of it, thought I'd be wasting my money. I persevered though and when I picked up my shoe, he told me it could last 5 years or a day. They're still going strong after a year and a half so I'm glad I didn't let him talk me out of the repair.
