You gotta hand it to Dave. He's pulled off the un-pull-offable, in that he's produced -- quite literally -- the best smoked meat in Toronto. What constitutes "best"? Who decides? Well my friends, it's subjective of course. But like most Jews, I know my deli and, in particular, my smoked meat. I still love Moe Pancer's (duh). Wolfie's is also terrific. Schwartz's in Montreal is famous for good reason, as is Katz's in NYC. And Montreal's Smoked Meat Pete is no slouch. Yes, there are lots of exceptional smoked meats to be had. Ain't life grand? And with this in mind, I do declare: Dave's makes the best smoked meat in Toronto. It's just sublimely tender and flavourful. Dave's also makes other great stuff (please bring back the chopped liver!!) including matzo ball soup, kishka, verscht, coleslaw, and the obligatory fries and gravy. It's kind of weird how difficult it is to find really good deli food in the GTA, so when I heard there was a place that was as tasty as Schwartz's in Montreal, I was 100% on board for a trip to Avenue Road. We arrived around lunchtime and the joint was pretty much empty. After perusing the menu, I decided to go with the Smoked Meat Half Sandwich ("served on rye with a Marty's pickle spear, fresh cut fries & coleslaw). We ordered and went to sit down, and the food was there within minutes. It's an excellent sandwich. While it's perhaps not as good as Schwartz's (but what is, really?), this is one excellent smoked meat 'wich. It's just so flavorful and I especially liked the hint of smokiness in the meat. The fresh fries were good but nothing too notable, while the coleslaw was surprisingly disappointing. It just had a kind of mushy texture and was lacking in any real bite, flavor-wise. We ultimately decided that the half sandwich is absolutely the wrong way to go at Dave's. We agreed that we should have omitted the fries and coleslaw completely and just had a full sandwich. That's exactly what I'll do next time (and there definitely will be a next time). read more

I was feeling under the weather, so my husband went to pick me up some 'Jewish penicillin', aka matzah ball soup to make me feel better. Having that soup was the highlight of my day and will surely nurse me back to health! Their latkes with apple sauce are amazing as is their Greek salad. STAFF: Amazing people working there. Very knowledgeable and friendly. I had a great chat with one of them and he explained to me how they source the ingredients from local places. PRICES: What the hell is happening to prices these days? $16 for HALF a sandwich with cole slaw. Yes, you read that right. HALF a sandwich - 4oz. A 6oz sandwich is $25 and an 8oz sandwich is $34. WTH! FOOD: Honestly, I did not enjoy the smoked meat sandwich. Should've gone for corned beef instead. Bottom line: Even though I genuinely liked the guy working there, I'm not coming back. June 24/2021: This was a delicious meal. I ordered the Corned Beef on Rye with Kettle Chips & Coleslaw. The sandwich was outstanding. Warm layers of corned beef on a deliciously fresh rye bread with a spicy brown mustard. Fantastic. The kettle chips were fresh & crispy. The coleslaw was a vinaigrette that was among the best I've tasted. We were delivered to by the owner himself, Dave. Nice, polite fella that was very efficient at his gig. The downside was the pickle was tiny & we coulda had a bigger slaw! Otherwise it was delicious! The moral of this story is "if you want a corned beef on rye, Dave's Jewish Deli is the place to get it"! read more

I went to Dave's Genuine for some takeout lunch after seeing the restaurant on TikTok. I ordered ahead on their website and I thought that the food will be ready be 12. After waiting 30 minutes downstairs in the sun and heat, the girl brought out my food. I went home and tried their smoked meat sandwich. I don't know, but the smoked meat sandwich was kind of dry and not very fatty. I am from Montreal so I have eaten great smoked mean sandwiches before. Would I come back? I recently learned that Dave's Genuine opened a Jewish deli and stopped by for lunch one day. My partner and I both ordered the Roast Beef Dip, picked it up and brought it home for lunch. The sandwich was piled high with tender delicious roast beef on a Hawaiian bun (like the sweet buns with roasted onions on top). I'm not a huge fan of horseradish, but it was so light and paired perfectly in this sandwich. It had so much flavour. I have to give major kudos to Dave's for their ability to get food to me hot and stay hot with delivery. They are more than 20 minute away by drive and it comes hot and fresh in most of the cases. One time the kiske was cold, but they changed to a new packing method when I told them. The key is they properly pack their food. Even the fries are tasty enough and warm. In fact, yesterday I was unable to get to my reuben for an additional 30 minutes after it was delivered and it still tasted great and pretty warm. Amazing! read more

Decided to check out the menu...This guy Dave is The Real McCoy when it comes to meat! Read the article a few weeks ago of Dave's Genuine Deli. I thought I would give it a try, as there are so few delis left in Toronto that are great. So last Thursday I placed an order for a Smoked Meat sandwich, a Pastrami sandwich, and would try the kettle chips. The Kettle chips were good and nice on the side. I do this thing where I like to put half a way to see how the sandwiches taste a few days later, and put those in the fridge, and sat down to eat half a Pastrami and half a Smoked Meat sandwich. Smoked meat was VERY good! My Montreal friends would day, nothing beats Schwartz's... But you have to try this! I would say it was very good, equal if not better. Personally I have always had a love of Pastrami more then just the smoked meat, and wow ... This has to be the best Pastrami sandwich I have ever had! The right size , just the perfect amount of spice, not to much, not to little....hands down the best Pastrami I have ever had. I have been to many of the old delis on Spadina that don't exist anymore, and this was awesome! Next day, heated the ones I put in the fridge....added a bit more mustard... I'm from Houston. I'm usually in Toronto about once a month. This is becoming my first stop after I leave YYZ. Dave's has the best smoked meat sandwich outside of Montreal. I mean it's right there with Schwartz's; it's that good. Oh and the fries, crispy and perfectly salted. Matzah ball soup is great and a generous portion. There's still so much more on the menu for me to try, but I can't get smoked meat sandwiches in the States so it's my go-to. Met the owner today and he's truly the nicest. Really cares about the quality of his food and his recipes. I recommended this place to my cousins who live here and they love it. I brought my son this time and he's hooked.
