I had a vintage Nikon Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AiS lens that I picked up at a thrift store. It is a classic and very famous lens. BUT it was infested with mold and the aperture blades were sticky. So I went looking for someone to repair it. It took me months to find Dave, he was recommended by a midwest camera repair place who would not take my lens for at least 6 months. I contacted Dave, and he said he would look at the lens (free of charge) and give me an estimate. When the lens arrived, Dave took it apart enough to check if the mold had damaged the glass and then called with a very reasonable estimate. I said go ahead and three days later, he sent back my lens. He did a fabulous job. Not only did he clean out the mold, he also checked the focus and the lubed everything. The lens that was returned to me was as good or better than a new lens. I could not be more happy. I like shooting vintage Nikon glass and have accumulated numerous vintage lenses. My camera screen needed a fix and Nikon certified dealer in Michigan (Midwest Camera in Wyandotte) was charging exorbitant price to get it fixed. So I thought I will look for a local guy who can do the job. I should say I'm lucky to find Daves camera repair because he finished the job quick for cheap. He did a fantastic job and my camera looks as good as new. He has his workshop in his basement and from the look of it you can tell he is a total camera enthusiast and that he's been doing this all his life. Dave recently clean, lubed, adjusted and replaced parts on my Nikon rangefinder camera. Wow! It's like new. I recently banged it against a rock damaging the film door and entire advance mechanism. After reading glowing reviews about Dave and his services, I decided to try him. The film advance is butter smooth, shutter speeds spot on, film door replaced with even a better one! Rangefinder cleaned and is now nice a bright with contrasty patch. Communication is excellent and Dave takes the time to explain his work and what needs to be done. It's like finding a great mechanic, doctor, dentist, etc. When you find the best, stick with it. Dave's work and attention to detail is superb! Highly recommend Dave. A great guy to talk to as well! I think that really excellent camera repairmen are getting harder and harder to find. They are becoming a dying breed in the new digital/throw away world. I want to let you folks know about a really superb guy who doesn't have a web presence yet. First, the usual caveats: I have absolutely no financial ties or any other conflict of interest related to this guy. I am posting this because he is really superb, prices his repairs fairly, and probably could use more business given the state of the camera world now. I think it would benefit all of us if people like this stay in business. The fellow's name is Dave Easterwood. His business is called "Dave's Camera Repair". He has old camera parts overflowing his basement into two outside storage units. He has done repairs and CLAs for me through the years on cameras such as: Leica M3, Minolta CLE, 70's era compact rangefinders (Olympus RC, RD, SP), Pentax MX, Olympus OM4t, etc.. He does not charge for estimates even if he has to take the whole camera apart and to test it. His charges for repairs are very fair. He is clearly a master at what he does and on many occasions has been able to fix my camera by cleaning a contact or re-soldering a connection rather than replacing a part. In other words, when it comes to repairs, he only does what he has to and does not do extra stuff to over charge you. He is happy to check out a camera on his instruments and if it looks OK, tell you so. If it is not worth repairing he will tell you so, and does not charge you. He is really terrific. He is very comfortable with all cameras and loves to work on Leicas-screw mount through M8, as well as any rangefinder camera including medium format cameras. He is very good with all cameras, and loves older mechanical cameras. I concur with the other review that Dave is extremely knowledgeable in the repair of film cameras, very reasonable in his pricing, and, as a bonus, a very friendly and open person. I've had Dave do a couple repairs and upgrades for me on Nikon 35mm cameras and he is extremely competent in the task. I'm fortunate enough to live in the area and able to take cameras to him in person and to see his impressive workshop and inventory of parts.
