On my visit to Salem, OR, my best friend and I decided to try Dave's Hot Chicken - as it had been a new-ish spot in town, she wanted to finally give a shot. So, we ventured out after work and some much needed retail therapy to Dave's Hot Chicken. Off first glance, the restaurant is very eye-catching. Its neon lights on the exterior draw you in and the colorful-graffiti like interior (and exterior) is playful and exciting. There's ample seating indoors and outdoors and the service is quick. The staff is kind and extremely helpful. So, all that was a plus. Our server even gave us his recommendations and helped us narrow down our order. Of which, for me, was their #1 - two piece chicken tender basket. I got my chicken with a Lite-Mild spice level and it included a side of fries and Dave's Signature sauce. Their chicken batter is coated with a dry rub of spices, which, sadly, wasn't my favorite. I only got a Lite-Mild spice rub (my best friend got extra hot - she loves spicy food), but I just was not a fan of the overall batter / combination of spices used. Maybe if it was a wet rub it would have been a different experience - but sadly, the dry rub wasn't really anything to brag about. Outside of that, the actual chicken itself was tender. The fries were fresh and extra crunchy and I really enjoyed Dave's special sauce. All in all, it was a decent overall first experience. It is decorated very brightly with cool lighting. The menu is simple, and I decided to try "Hot" as my spice level, and I went with one slider and one tender, otherwise known as the "Dave's #3." The food came out fast. The chicken was juicy, but the spice seemed just one note to me: heat. It didn't really have much in the way of flavor. The spice rub was almost bitter, if I had to say it had a flavor besides the heat. I liked the Dave's sauce, it was a nice counterpoint to the spice: rich and creamy. The bread that came with the tender was an afterthought. I don't know if it was supposed to be toasted, but mine wasn't. The slide bun was nice, if a little small in relation to the chicken. The slaw was okay, but there wasn't a lot of it. The pickles were fine. So, the chicken itself was nice, but I wasn't a huge fan of the spice coating. The fries were okay. I may come back and try a lower level of spiciness. I'm giving this place 4 stars because of the chicken itself and the very friendly service. We stopped here for a quick lunch during our road trip. It was a little busy when I arrived with a handful of people ahead of me. The woman at the front was nice and helpful. I ordered a chicken sandwich with no spice for my wife. When I asked about the spice level for my sandwich, the woman went to the kitchen and got a sample of the hot for me to try. Since it did not seem too spicy to me, I ordered a hot one with extra pickles. The sandwiches were pretty good. My wife liked her non-spicy one. My hot was hotter than what I had sampled. Well hot damn, I'm a fan! The first bite was a rush of paprika explosion followed by tangy sweetness with a tad of spice. The French fries were perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of crunch on the outside. I loved how my Togo box was neatly packed with making it easy to not make a mess eating from the car. The slider came with a side of delicious pickle slices and an extra side of sauce. This was my first time to ever try this place and I will for sure be back to try more. Disclaimer: I cannot handle spice at all so take this review with a block of salt. First of all, I love the design of the restaurant. The outside is so fun and the interior is even cooler with the art on the walls, the lights and even the special napkins. Now onto the food. I ordered a number 3 which came with one tender and one slider (level 0 spice). The meal was fantastic. The tenders were crispy and juicy inside, the fries were perfectly seasoned, the slider was amazing (I love the kale slaw) and the sauce brings it all together. Portions were also great. I also appreciate the cute little stack of extra pickles that comes on top of the sauce tub for those that are pickle fans. Now... can we please talk about this bread (pictured). Why would they even include this? I spent my entire dining experience contemplating this and I concluded that it's just a gimmick to have more customers feeling full when they leave therefore increasing the overall satisfaction with the meal. But cmon, this is not the way. I know I'm not working in the kitchen but I can say with absolute certainty that they are taking the bread straight from the bag and putting it on the plate. Tried the medium spice and hot spice level to see if the hotness affected the flavor. It did not it still tasted the same just a delayed burn on your lips. The chicken was ok, even if it is Deceiving being it looks over cooked (just how their breading is). To be honest the crinkle cut fries and Dave's special sauce was my highlight of the meal and I cringed when I saw they were crinkle cut fries, but they were on point! The slider and tender are both fairly good sized, but you pay for it, not a cheap fast food meal.
