A very happy experience after a mediocre lunch. I was convinced I needed a scoop of Dave's Ice Cream since it was right next door to our lunch place. I'm glad I went in because it reinforced my faith in this new generation of young workers. Entering this shop we were warmly greeted by two young workers even though they were both helping other customers. They suggested another flavor in place of the Ube (can't remember the exact name) but it was so good, had a coconut base. They let our family try samples of flavors to help us make our decision. My husband ordered a scoop of Cookies & Cream and I ordered my favorite from here which is the Macadamia Nut. My husband enjoyed his Cookies & Cream but I thought mine tasted different from before...the mac nuts were small pieces and not that many where there used to be half pieces. Haven't been here in probably 20 years or more. Their ice cream is made in Hawaii and they have a good variety of Hawaiian local ice cream flavors not found anywhere else. We ordered the Banana Royale Sundae. One with Chocolate Mac (Macadamia nuts) and the other with Coconut Mac. We got it with whipped cream on top. Can't go wrong supporting local, and no one more local than Dave's Ice Cream. This location has been around for years! Before 2020, I believe they used to be open until 10 and although late, it was quite necessary (imo). Nothing beats ice cream after a last minute dinner at Zippy's with your friends. This specific night my friends and I stopped by, it still amazed me how many people still came in during their last hour of service. They close at 9PM now and it's great to see how many families and groups of people come in to support the ice cream shop until the end. Not many table to sit at, but service is fast, the options are plentiful, and the ice cream hits the spot. I always love suggesting Dave's to locals and tourists alike. As a tourist, this place lacks Hawaiian hospitality. Two girls worked at this location today. One was helpful with samples and scooping ice cream, the other working the register repeatedly asking if we were ready to order. We were still looking at the offerings!!! There was NO ONE else waiting in the store!! Her one job was to note down how many scoops and she couldn't get that right! She charged us for six, then forgot that we had one extra scoop. Then charge us again for the missing scoop. Right after they were done with our order, they disappeared to the back room. That must be why, employee was rushing us for our order. It seems like standard procedure for them to hide in the back room until a customer shows up, then pop out and then hide back again. Shakes my head. Also noted inconsistent handling of ice cream. I would rate Dave's a 4.5/5! I came with my boyfriend and sister, and we got the Kahlua Fudge, Ube, and Caramel Mac. The Kahlua Fudge was a coffee base with chocolate fudge and was pretty good! The balance of flavors definitely depended on which bite you took, but overall it was pretty good between the two (not too coffee-ey, not too chocolatey) The Ube had a slight genuine Ube taste, but it is a bit sweet. The Caramel Mac was also on the same level as the Kahlua Fudge for us. It was a good balance between the Macnut and Caramel, but my boyfriend's final words were that it still could use slightly more of a caramel taste. I would say that the perfect combination between ice creams would definitely be Ube and Caramel Mac--I would 100% give this a shot because it definitely brings out the flavor in both when you have them together! The scoops were pretty big, which is nice! 3 scoops for ~$10 is also super affordable. The all three of my flavors were icy, like the ice cream was either not stored properly at all times or it wasn't made properly. The green tea and the cotton candy had a slight chew to them. Almost gummy. Very unpleasant. The Kona coffee was a bit too bitter for my liking, and it was less gummy than the others and melted faster. My childhood ice cream shop. I used to go to Dave's Ice Cream often when it was located in Ala Moana in Sears before it closed down. I think it was about 20 years since I had their ice cream. I was really young then and did not notice the name of the ice cream store and thought it closed down permanently along with Sears. I saw a recommended post of Dave's Ice Cream on IG and was surprised they were opened at other locations too. I went to their Aiea location and ordered their pink cotton candy scoop and their honeydew mochi scoop. Their pink cotton candy is my absolute favorite. After trying a spoonful, I was hit with nostalgia. It tasted exactly how I remembered it. Their pink cotton candy has mini choco chips mixed in the ice cream. They also have blue cotton candy which excludes the choco chips and has confetti chips instead. It's a good alternative for those who doesn't like or allergic to chocolate. I also tried their honeydew mochi which taste like the melona bar with chewy mochi bites. It was very good. They also have mini cones which is similar to the drumsticks ice cream but in mini version. Overall, so happy to have found this place again. I love their ice creams and their unique and local flavors. I would have given this place 5 stars but I have been receiving different types of services.
