I regret ever doing business with Turrentine & Associates, which openly admits that it fell prey to a phishing attack and gave all of my (and many others') tax information to a hacker who then filed under my name. If you need help straightening this out, don't expect a swift call back or even for the company to take credit for their mismanagement. All you get is an email saying "we'll looking into this" and no reply since. There are much better options out there for an accountant, either from a professional standpoint or just an ethical one. read more

We found him on Yelp, and he lived up to the five-star reputation - a very nice, conversational tax experience. Not scary at all. His office is a classy storefront with exceptional appointments - note the massive, classic oak front desk, and the wonderful antique oak bookcases. We were filing a pretty standard return, married couple filing together with two W-2's, investment interest, student loan interest, and a couple of random outliers. We were in and out in an hour, and he took our appointment after business hours. A huge advantage over other mass-tax retail chains: David Turrentine & Assoc. is year-round. He'll be there if you have a tax question anytime of year, not just Jan-Apr. Regarding the 3-stars, I'm trying to mellow out my ratings extremes, hoarding my 4's and 5's. 3-stars is legit A-OK. Even though David Turrentine & Associates are kinda/sorta in my neighborhood, I found him and his team through recommendations from two co-workers, who, like me, have similar tax situations. "He's all about deductions," said one. "He's used to working with 1099s, and he works a lot with massage therapists and actors," said the other. While I kinda wondered if that meant David had a screw loose somewhere - massage therapists and actors? Who knows less about taxes and finances than those two groups? They'll drive you nuts! - I went with David. (PS - I belong to at least one of those two groups, so please don't flame me, folks.) I first met with David last November to go over my 2009 taxes. As I explained to him them, I have a unique gift for screwing up my taxes. Even when I used TurboTax, I managed to screw things up. Sometimes it's worked to my advantage, but most often, it's worked to the IRS' advantage. Without going into great details, since Yelp is a VERY public forum, I will say that I have 1099's and w-2s, and need a lot of guidance about which are the proper deductions, how to keep track of which expenses, and what applies to what. For example: I pay for my own health insurance. I thought I had to have my health expenses be at a certain level of my income to be deductible. Since I'm a healthy person, the cost of the premiums weren't enough. It took David about 30 seconds to point out that I had been looking at the wrong column, and that, actually, those costs were fully and legally deductible. Bottom line: I turned everything in. The team submitted my return electronically. And not only did I qualify for a refund, I've already got it! Not too hard for you to guess that I'm very happy with David Turrentine and Associates. After the tax season ends, I intend to ask David if it's worthwhile filling an amended return for 2009. I fully trust in his expertise to give me the right answer. David Turrentine has pretty much a monopoly on doing taxes for artists in Chicago. Well, he can handle you if your taxes are pretty straight-forward and you are making pretty average to lower income. Once you start earning in several states, the problems begin. First it was clerical errors that could have been avoided, then miscalculations that meant that I owed states on late taxes. When I asked him to handle the issues, he delayed so I was fined more, and then finally I just ended up paying. Finally, his office was hacked recently, and my information was stolen, which led to someone filing a tax return in my name, that thankfully the IRS caught. There are other more secure options. 2 stars instead of 1 because he was fine for the first few years. read more

I love David and his team! He has done my taxes for the last 3 years and considering all the variables: free lance, different states, divorce, new corporate gig etc.. I would say he was great at navigating through it all and counseling me on options. He may be good, but I won't ever know as he turned me down after I had waited on getting all of my tax documents together and referred me to The A.C.T. Group which seems shady from their ratings. I had explained all of my transactions from the previous year in a call in January and he hadn't expressed any concern that he wouldn't be able to take care of me, but now with a month before deadline and having all of my documents together he tells me he can't do it. Claims my gain's and losses were too complex. I had everything prepared with a professional tax tool from my broker and it was not that difficult. He was just lazy or wanted to help out his friend. I went to see David and left immediately. I was shocked by his condescending attitude, exorbitant prices and creepy office location. This guy is a real jerk. He made me jump through hoops just to arrange a meeting and brought up several times how very busy he is. If you make me do a worksheet that basically does my taxes for you, what do I need to pay you $250 for? What a joke! read more

Best accountant ever! Especially for the self-employed and non-traditional job holders. He takes care of everything I don't want to do and has gotten me a refund for the past 4 years! I didn't actually use David's services because he wasn't able to offer me what I was looking for, however he gave me a terrific referral for a business accountant and I couldn't be happier! He is extremely pleasant and helpful, so I would highly recommend using him on that basis alone! read more

David Turrentine @ Associates had done our taxes without drama for many years and was in the process of doing them this year when he decided our taxes were now "too difficult" and that he couldn't do them. No offer of an extension -- nothing. He just mailed back all our materials, leaving us totally in the lurch and now faced with the unenviable task of finding a new tax preparer in March. I found his behavior staggeringly unprofessional and I guess I shouldn't be surprised to see many others here with similar complaints. Luckily, it all worked out and we found a new accountant. Ironically, after reviewing our taxes he thought it all looked very straightforward and seemed perplexed that any accountant would have found it too difficult. For actors, artist and self employed David know his stuff. He is very knowledge and is trustworthy. If I have question I feel I can pick up the phone and get answer from him or his staff. He knows the actor/performing artist and what they can deduct, which is very important. David's been doing my taxes for years and I find meeting with him each winter to my income taxes a pleasurable experience. I feel I am in good hands. read more

I've been using David's firm for over a decade. I was always so happy with him but in recent years, he seemed to be a lot more distant. And then last year, our information was hacked and someone filed a false return in our names because of a security breach in his office. As a result, everything is screwed up with the IRS and our social security numbers are pretty much worthless. It has caused me and us so much hassle and yet David informed us of all this in an e-mail, very casually. We had to mail in our own returns- he didn't even provide the postage because after the breach, we couldn't file electronically. We'd already planned to look for another tax preparer/accountant for this year's taxes, but David's dumping US, saying he is making his practice smaller because of health issues. I am sorry he's having health problems but I could not be more disappointed/shocked by what has happened and the way we have been treated. By the sound of it, this breach impacted a lot of people negatively. I'm really amazed his firm still took full payment for their work after this. Sometimes loyalty really doesn't pay off! read more

I got David's name from YELP! and used him based on the reviews. I'm a freelancer and had back taxes for 2005 as well as this years taxes to complete. I had gone to H&R Block for 2006 (big mistake).
