Also please double check your documents. Bills or other proof with date can't be more than 4 months old. It was sad seeing people getting turned away after waiting so long. There are a lot of negatives reviews and I was worried about visiting, but I had a great experience today. I arrived at 7:20AM for an 8:30AM opening and was around 20th in line. Once they opened the doors, it took about 15 minutes to get inside and they called my number in about 10 minutes. A few of the employees were a little short with me, but the person who helped me apply for my Real ID was very nice and helpful. I was surprised how efficient it was. read more

I wasn't looking forward to going to get my Real ID especially since I didn't have an appointment. After going to another county's office and being told I could only be served if I was a resident of that county, I decided to head to Hart Lane. The line was out the door at 8 minutes after opening but as soon as I walked in they checked me in and ensured I had all the correct paperwork. They moved very quickly through and my number was called within 15 minutes. The gentlemen at the service counter was very nice and efficient. It was a great experience all the way around! Got here at 8:20 (10 min before they open) was worried i'd be here for super long but was pleasantly surprised!! The doors open and the line started to move. All I needed was my license renewed, so they asked if i preferred the kiosk or a person and i tested my luck w the kiosk. the photo wasn't taking properly so i had to start over once, but a worker helped me. she told me to step back, then the picture worked! i thought i needed my passport and a utility bill but turns out i didn't. was pretty fast. took about 45 min so i recommend! read more

I arrived at 8:30 AM to find a long line and staff yelling at customers in an aggressive and unprofessional manner. Once I received my number, the wait time was an exhausting five hours. When I finally reached the counter, the agent she was barely visible behind her monitor counter no:8 @ 1:00. I had submitted my documents online (which I strongly advise against--it's a terrible system), but they were rejected. When I mentioned that they had been accepted online, the agent she simply shrugged and said no idea about that we don't know, without any explanation. There was a clear lack of communication and coordination within their own departments, making the entire process frustrating and difficult to navigate. This branch is poorly managed, with staff who seem completely uninterested in customer service. Instead of being helpful, they are rude, impatient, and unprofessional. This location should either undergo serious improvements or be shut down entirely. read more

Moved from Nevada and let me tell you, I never thought I'd be wishing to be back at NV DMV (as much as I hated it). TN has some growing pains and this is one of them. Why have different driver related services under different roofs? Combine labor and services of DL and vehicle plates/registration into one building and make it more streamlined. NV DMV has done that and it has made it much easier. Everything under one roof and all done in one appointment. Again, TN has some growing pains and is years behind on infrastructure like this. The building is VERY small and old compared to the population size of Nashville and there are only about 10 clerks? NV DMV has about 30-40 clerks. And, the process of getting to the "main booth" to get checked in and given a number is very... nonchalant. You could even miss it if you don't know what to look for. In addition, I didn't get seen until after closing time. Is that normal? Do the clerks get OT? Just crazy to me. I love Nashville as it's my new home but TN needs to upgrade and improve ASAP as this state, and especially the city of Nashville are growing tremendously and need to keep up. read more

I was a little nervous about how the process would go after seeing all the bad reviews but I arrived a little before 8:30am and was walking out by 9:45 with no appointment. Just make sure you have all your needed documents and the line will move right along. There were truthfully probably about 50 people there in line when I showed up and right at 8:30 they started taking people in. The line was gradually moving the whole time and then when I did get inside I sat for maybe 30 minutes before they called me up to go through the paperwork. It's very slow if you don't have an appointment so I waited 5 hours for my star ID. However I will sua it is much more organized better run than lebanons DMV. They don't know what they're doing there in Lebanon and the person who greets everyone and tells them where to go is unhinged and has no clue what he's doing. There was no rhyme or reason he was just telling everyone to stand to the side and giving them paper clips but here on Hart Lane DMV, the lady was very nice and helpful. I knew it would be a long wait. There was plenty of seating but you can leave and sit in your car and get notified when your number is about to come up. The lady at the service desk let me take photos over and over until I got a decent one which is nice after waiting so long you don't want an ugly photo and most of the time they snap and make you go... Points off bc the long wait and the bathroom has no changing table so I had to change my baby on the wet bathroom sink twice since I was there for 5 hours.... read more

Went on a Tuesday. I got there at 7:15 exactly, was getting real ID, and there was about 25-30 people in line. They opened the doors at 8:30 and I got out at 9:25. So two hours isn't too bad for a Tennessee DMV. Workers were nice and helpful and I think 7:00ish was the perfect time to go to not wait more in AM/wait more for the line. read more

I attended this driver center on Friday the 13th, on September of 2019. Being the day that it was and reading all the reviews, I prepared for a living hell! The reality was quite opposite of that. Having done my research, I realized that the only thing not in the driver center's control is the long lines. I printed my own checklist from the TN government website for what I needed. I made sure I had 4 different things of of the 2 they required just in case something wasn't acceptable. The place opens up at 8:30 AM but I arrived at 7:00 AM. By then, there were 13 people ahead of me all sitting in a circular area outside. Closer to 7:40, we all orderly made a line, everyone respecting the order that we all had arrived at. By 7:40, though, there was enough people to start circling the building. At 8:20, 3 employees came out asking people to make three separate line, depending on the reason for your visit. One line was for existing TN license renewals with a debit card, the other was for testers, and the third was for our-of-state to TN license. The employees then individually asked each person in line to state if we had document X, document Y, and document Z just to make sure we wouldn't wait pointlessly. A few people didn't have all the required items and were told so. This allowed them to leave and not waste their own time. After I was in the building, at 8:30, it took 45 minutes to get my documents vetted, take a picture, and leave. Every employee was pleasant, helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive to the various peoples needs. If you come prepared, you should have to wait waste your time. read more

I needed to apply for a TN state license after moving here, and by law it has to be done within 30 days of taking residence. The master procrastinator that I am waited until my license expired - 9 whole months later. I kept avoiding it because both times I went to Franklin's DMV, it was a 6 hour wait. I just couldn't. They actually stop accepting people starting at 2, because they get so full. That's where this DMV came to the rescue. I didn't realize the influx of transplants is predominantly in Williamson County, which explains their atrocious wait time. I came to this East Nash location at 11:30, and moved my 13 places in line in 2 hours. NOT TERRIBLE. By the time I left the place at 1:30, it was half as full as when I first arrived. Disclaimer: Be absolutely sure you have all the paperwork you need before coming here. I've heard disgruntled patrons having to leave due to not having sufficient documents (they don't take copies, only originals or certified copiess). When you first walk in there's a representative to the right that can go over the paperwork you have to ensure your wait isn't in vain, at least that's what happened when I went there. P.s. Bring a charger, earbuds, book, snacks and coffee. Walked in at 2pm; done right at 5pm. Plan to be here at least 3-4 hours. Check in under the Information sign which a canvas backdrop hides the clerk, but that is where you'll need to stand for all to see.(note: wear comfortable casual attire) New Drivers will be seen promptly as it is handled by a different clerk. Renewals for your Tennessee license can be done on a kiosk past the wall to your left. No need to see a clerk. It can also be done at your local library. Some patrons are not tech savvy so they ended up waiting hours because they mistakenly didn't operate the kiosk thoroughly. Switching your license: If you're here to change your license over from a different state, you'll need 2 proof of residency from: paystub/bill/insurance. ID: i used my soon to be expired license and passport. Because i already registered my vehicle with a passport & proof of residency with some mail i didn't have to worry about registering my vehicle which is done in a different part of town. I registered in Green Hills. No waiting. The process at this particular location compared to most DMV locations is that it's mainly a manual process. The monitors, this particular day, were not operating so be sure to sit as close to the information sign to hear for your name to be called. People were turned away after 3pm and told they have the option to return the following day or day after but again that does not guarantee you a time slot or appointment. So don't bother walking in after 4pm regardless if you had a form pre-filled out from the day before. The clerks here are actually friendly. They will help you. Please just have documents up to date and ready to show. It's not a speedy process for transplants but patience goes a long way. read more

If you are organized with your stuff, come prepared knowing what you need and show up around 7:50 or 8:00, you will be in and out quickly. Came in for out of state license. Got here at 7:55 there were about 10 others here already, dmv staff gave out paperwork at 8:20, let us in at 8:30 (there were about 30-50 people by then in line). Note: form a line when you arrive, those who didn't were given paperwork last despite arriving first. When you enter you all line up to use a computer to get a ticket, Enter your cell to get a text when it's your turn. Then you sit and wait. Quickly you will be called up to check your paperwork. If you have the required documents you will get to sit back down and wait a little longer. First wait was about 3-5 min and second wait was about 10-20. Then you do an eye test, get your picture taken and they give you a paper license . Your real one comes in the mail in about 20 days. Tips: they have little patience for clueless or rude people. If you start asking a bunch of questions out of turn, ignoring the line or acting impatient they will respond rudely to you. If you are rude back things will escalate to just more rudeness. They have the power to help or delay you so don't be rude or sassy even if they appear that way to you. They deal with clueless people all day who are angry and don't want to be there. Remember they are here all day so imagine that. Just be very sweet whether they are or not and things will go smoother. Those who were kind were treated in kind and those who got sassy and impatient were treated in kind as well. The customer is not always right here, this is the state. NOTE FOR MARRIED WOMEN and those with a NAME CHANGE: if you are getting an out of state license even though your documents and your social security and your application say your married name they may still put your maiden name on your license if you don't speak up. They go by your birth certificate. l didn't know until after they asked me to double check my license. So I would advise if you have a name different than what you were born with point this out when you are doing the eye test and getting your picture taken. I was in and out quickly because I had everything I needed pre-prepared and they were efficient and organized in the morning. While not the most pleasant place, it's not so bad if you come early, are prepared and don't get frustrated with any conflicting information or things that don't go your way. Patience is key and just be nice because the people working here are just doing their job. If you don't like it imagine how they feel dealing with a myriad of characters all day long. read more

I have been to this DMV 4 times after completing my MSF course to get my motorcycle endorsement. Every time I get a different answer for more stuff I need. My travels have taken me to several states and quite a few visits to the DMV. This office, by far, wins for being the "Worst DMV in the Country". There needs to be a real audit of the management and staff at this location. The location is understaffed, mismanaged and the staff that is there is more than rude. Combatant would be a better description. And talk about inefficient.... It took my wife nearly SEVEN HOURS to get her license transferred. It took an hour just to get checked in just to be "officially waiting". Out of the 10 or so service desks, for most of the day, only one was actually servicing customers. The clerks had no sense of urgency or customer service. The entire staff needs to take a class in customer service. It was amazing how slowly they processed customers. Seemed quite the coincidence that as 5:00 neared they seemed to process a lot faster. One particular employee, an older grey gentleman who resembled Barney Fife, actually tried to challenge and intimidate the patrons because they clapped for each other as they finally made it through what could only be described as a torturous wait. Another snapped at a patron just because she tried to ask a question. These people have no business being in positions where they have to deal with people. Shameful. The only positive part of this terrible day was when a customer, who noticed that several of the people waiting had small children with them, ordered pizza for the entire waiting room. I got the chance to speak with this amazing gentleman and he told me that after he sent his wife and two year old home, he realized how many parents were there with children who did not have that option. A rare example of generosity and humanity that was inspiring to witness. If you have the option, avoid this DMV office like the plague. This place really needs to do some soul searching and reflection and ask themselves are they really doing the best they can do provide the tax paying public the best service they can. It is the taxpayer, your patrons, who are providing you the ability to make your living behind a desk in a nice climate controlled office. read more

I have never had a bad experience at the Hart Lane Center (or the other license bureaus on Clarksville Hwy, Centennial Blvd or Old Hickory in Madison). Staff have been professional and handled their business. Today was exceptional though because they have a tenured staff member at a table who is taking people as they enter and directing them and letting them know if they have all the right forms. She is clear about her expertise and calm and personable. When she had to redirect people, she did so in a respectful way. It was a welcome change from just going to a kiosk. read more

If you have a current (non-expired) TN license and are going here to get a Real ID, here's the scoop. I arrived on a Wednesday at 8:15 -- they open at 8:30 -- and there were only 3 open spaces in the parking lot and a line forming outside of the door. Around 8:20/8:25, two women came out and started organizing the line into two lines... if you are taking a drivers test, need a commercial permit, need your first TN license, etc., they will give you a clipboard and a form to start filling out. If you have a current TN license and just need a Real ID (and can pay with a credit card), then get in the other line. You don't need a clipboard or a form. Once inside, you can go to the ipad kiosks to check in. (To the left side of the waiting room as you enter from outside.) When you finish at the kiosk, it says you will get a number, but you will not get a number. They will holler out your name when it's your turn, so all you have to do is keep your ears open. Once they check your supporting documents (requirements are online), they take a new picture, punch a hole in your current license, and return it to you with a paper copy of your new/temporary one. The new license should arrive in about 3 weeks. I was finished and pulling out of the parking lot by 9:30 am. And everyone working there was very nice and helpful. My phone died while waiting...along with my soul. This is your stereotypical, miserable DMV you see in movies where time stands still. If you're renewing your TN driver's license, the wait shouldn't take long. For anything else, be prepared to wait for a couple hours, shoulder to shoulder with people just as unhappy as you are. I came in to renew/transfer my out-of-state license to a TN driver's license and waited a little over two hours. This was on a weekday at 1:30 pm. From what I hear, lines may be shorter earlier in the morning, so take that into consideration when planning your trip. Based on previous reviews, it seems they made slight improvements over the years, like putting an intercom system in place. The location also had several self-service check-in kiosks there. Great, right?!! NOPE. Unfortunately all kiosks were "temporarily unavailable" or not working "due to high volume". So basically, they installed machines that are intended to improve efficiency and address high volume, but the machines don't work when there is high volume. You see the irony in this, yes?Thus I had to wait in an initial check-in line for 12 minutes before actually receiving a real ticket number. I originally gave a 1 star review but added a star because the workers I encountered were actually working as hard as they could and appeared to be just as miserable as the customers. When I arrived at the counter (20 years later), the lady was quick to process everything and was thankful I had all my documents prepared and ready to go. I did not have a bad experience at all getting my drivers license renewed and address changed here. I walked straight in and was instructed by a representative to go to an iPad computer station to change my information. It only took a few minutes to update the information and then I waited until the representatives called my name. After that, I went and took my new photo and was done. It took a total of about 45 minutes. I dreaded coming here at first due to reading other reviews, but I had a decent experience. The staff was nice too. I had a really great experience at this center on Hart Ln. I got there about 7:10 am. They opened promptly at 8:30. I was about the seventh person to get in first. Everyone that worked there were very friendly and helpful. I read some bad reviews from people but my experience was very pleasant. The only thing that took a few minutes was getting my picture taken (I may have broken the camera ; ) but she got it going and it went just fine and she apologized for it taking a few minutes (I had to nenew my license). So, I would suggest getting there early and I know you're thinking that you're going to have to wait an 1 1/2 hrs until they open, but it's a lot better than getting there say at 10 am or later and having to wait outside in the hot weather for everyone else inside to get what they need to get done. So, get there early, I was able to sit in the shade right in front of the door. Everyone that waited was very pleasant and friendly to talk with. AAA++++++ for this service center. Oh, and all the counters were full of employees working, so that helped a lot. read more

Honestly, I could say a lot but this should sum it up.... This is quite literally the WORST place I've ever been in the entire world. Avoid at all costs!! (But unfortunately, due to the fact it's the only full service DMV in davidson county, you'll probably end up here at some point.) If you do have to visit Hell, or otherwise known as the Hart Lane DMV, come as early as possible! I was turned away once at 3pm because they were already not able to get to the people they had in line. I came back on a different and ended up waiting over 4.5 hours to get a new license. There was no ticketing system so there was no way to know how far along in line you were, so you have to wait there the entire time. It's miserable. No WiFi. Smells of misery & urine. I was told 1.5-2 hours when I checked in at 11:30 am & didn't leave until after 4pm (just in time to hit all the Nashville rush hour... yay *eye roll*). Somethings gotta give because my experience today was asinine. read more
