This please is always a hit or miss. This time was a hit and miss, ha! I was saved by the lady that I thought was my miss. She was actually very helpful and told me everything I was missing to be able to change my out of state DL and change my name too (shh! I should of done it long time ago, ha). I had the chance to go back home and get everything, or so I thought! I was missing one proof of residence (I had passport, DL, SSC, marriage license and a letter as proof of address plus a change of address sticker on an older envelope when I changed my address) the lady that was at the counter after I came back wasn't going to accept the envelope with the match change of address sticker but my angel in disguise saved me! She knob and the lady with not so happy tone told me to have a sit and grab a number. They have their COVID-19 guidelines and they all are following social distancing and wearing a face mask. They are also taking online applications for different services that don't need you to go in person. read more

I visited this location last week to change over my license. When I arrived there were a social distancing line outside (2 thumbs up) and they had staff who checked in periodically to see who needed a number, what you were there for and to pass out water. Once inside, they had someone checking your documentation so that you didn't waste time waiting. I waited for about 35 minutes, which in my experience is impressive. The staff was helpful and efficient, despite irritable customers arguing over their documentation. From the time I arrived to the time I left was a little over an hour. That's a win in my book. read more

I came in and grabbed a number at 10:40. After waiting for 2 hours, my number was called. I walked up, and handed her my social and my license. She told me I needed my birth certificate or my passport, which I had left at home. She told me that if I left and came back, that she would put me "back in the cue". I got back within 20 minutes, she put my number "back in", and I've been waiting ever since. Arrived at 10:40, and it's now 1:46...still waiting. read more

I no longer fear hell for I have spent the afternoon at the Hart Lane DMV/DSC. Truly, abandon hope all who enter unto this cursed gates. The room teemed with the unwashed, surly, the sick (can anyone cover his/her damn mouth before coughing?), the out of work, the depressed, and me. The people behind the counter, honestly and truly, are all out of effs. it's astounding to me that this service is so notoriously and consistently bad. I love Nashville. I've been thrilled with my move here and plan on spending the rest of my life in this metro. THAT SAID, this is the sort of unnecessary, third-world, bad service bullsh!t I thought I left behind in Miami. The state governance really screwed the electorate with this one. I need to write a representative. A Yelp review is not going to cut it. We need more centers, bigger centers, on-site managers who cite bad behavior, and a streamlined service that gets people in and out in a timely manner and doesn't require people to take off entire days of work to accomplish something that should take no more than 45 minutes. The services are antiquated (rather than screaming out names from the back, how about an intercom system?), the workers pride themselves on inefficiency and the folks who are unlucky enough to have to come here are abused for entertainment (there's no reason why so many people have the same sad story of coming here, waiting for hours... only to be turned away and return a following day for the same situation). It's Groundhog Day. It's Groundhog Day from heck. I came in to swap out my FL drivers license (Girls hit your hallelujah (whoo)) and register as a TN voter. That's it. Almost 4 hours. That's how long I had to wait... in order to wait in line, get a number, wait some more, talk to an agent for 8 minutes, have my paperwork and eyesight approved (they screwed up my vision assessment -- unless I am to believe them over my Vandy eye doctor), be told that my registration is set, and walk out the door. Thank goodness I have a (relatively) flexible schedule. Without one I don't know how people get their basic needs (eg complying with the law) met. From the looks of things, they don't. read more

Went in today (Thursday 1/18) @ 2:45pm to transfer my out-of-state driver's license to TN. From the time I stood in line to obtain a ticket to the time I walked out it only took 50 mins. From the initial point of contact they confirmed we all had the correct paperwork before sitting down to wait for our number to be called. There were only 12 people ahead of me in line and the below process went smoothly. * Surrender your out-of-state driver's license. * Pass a vision screening. * Present U.S. birth certificate - they accepted my passport instead :) * Proof of your name change, if applicable. * Proof of your TN address (e.g. utility bill, bank statement, paycheck stub, lease). * Have your photograph taken. * Pay the $28 fee. read more

Ridiculous. This is beyond embarrassing. There are two locations and both take hours to even be seen by someone. The state law requires you to get a TN license within 30 days of moving here. Waiting +2 hours for a new state license. There were not that many customers that I should take that long for a person to be seen.

Unfortunately, I waited untll the last minute to try to make an appointment for my license and real ID replacement which was set to expire on my birthday their next business day. I decided to get an e ticket online and drive straight to the service center. I was prepared to wait up to two hours to get in to get it done, I just hoped it would be before they closed. Their customer service attendant James, was kind enough to help me get checked in and then I realized that my number was going to be called soon because of the number they were assisting currently. That is because the e-tickets are put into the appointment quene. While waiting, I watched two people berate James and curse at him simply because he didn't answer their questions the way they wanted. It was not his fault that they did not come prepared with an appointment or e-ticket and were going to have to wait in line just as everyone else. Also, they came in so late in the day that any new walk-in appointments were not going to be helped because there was not enough time before the facility closed to help those that had made an appointment in advance or filled out an e ticket. Not only was James very helpful, Julio, who did my paperwork was incredibly helpful as well and quick. I was in and out in half an hour. I'm very pleased with my appointment. read more

I came in around lunch time, dreading to renew my license at this location, but was surprisingly pleased with my experience. The kiosk process took 5 minutes. I was greeted by a kind woman who took my picture and had pleasant conversation with until my ID temporary printed. The whole process took maybe ~15 minutes! Would definitely recommend. read more

As everyone says this place is truly hell on earth and no doubt the worst DMV in America. This is literally a cliche of a cliche DMV experience. Never have I seen people with so little power act and feel so powerful. For over FIVE HOURS I sat and watched them disrespect every single person they spoke to. It took an entire day here to do what several other states (including overpopulated California) have repeatedly accomplished for me in under 2 hours: transfer an out of state license. Here's a list of just some of the abhorrent behavior I witnessed from the staff. -Took 90 minutes to call people to the counter for "check in" even though everyone has to check in at a touch screen upon arrival. -All ten employees left for lunch at the exact same time leaving an entire waiting room sitting for an hour. -Bryan, who appeared to be the manager, kept shouting and snapping his fingers at people like an angry lunch lady and repeatedly announced to the whole room that he didn't care how long we were there or if they would have time to get to us. -At 1 pm they unplugged the check in machines and placed "broken" signs on them. They then turned away anyone who walked in despite the fact that they close at 5pm and there were only about 40 people waiting. - They repeatedly claimed that a passport is required to get an ID which is simply untrue (a birth certificate can be used). -employees frequently snickered after sending someone away for a minor technicality. -They displayed outright disrespect for military service and refused to put "veteran" on my wife's license as well as another veteran there because apparently a military ID and discharge paperwork doesn't prove you're a veteran in good ol' Tennessee. The employees actually seemed to treat veterans with more contempt than everyone else and never once showed them any gratitude or respect for their years of service. - Several times there were 45 minute breaks of silence between each person they called up. -After a four and a half hour wait the employee I dealt with mixed up my middle, first, and last name on my ID TWICE. -I had to take three pictures because the guy messed up the details on my ID so many times. -For almost forty minutes I stood and waited as the man pretended my passport couldn't be verified in the system. -the man repeatedly asked me if I was wearing contacts despite the fact that I'd told him no at least three times before just ignoring the question. The woman who did my wife's test made her keep her reading glasses on for her photo and put "requires glasses" on her license despite the fact that she passed the eye test without glasses and hardly ever wears them outside of five hour waiting room visits where there is nothing to do but read. I highly suspect this experience is the way it is because Tennessee requires an ID to vote and obviously taking a day off work to go through this hell convinces many people to just leave without an ID and therefore never be able to vote. Nashville should be absolutely ashamed of this place and the behavior of their employees. The complete lack of human decency they display certainly made me ashamed to have moved here. The only saving grace was all the people in the waiting room who repeatedly showed kindness to each other throughout the day despite their unfortunate circumstances. read more

BEST DMV experience of my life. They were the nicest people I have ever dealt with at any DMV and I recently moved from Illinois. Thank you for making this the easiest, most simple, and quickest trip to the DMV I have ever had. Not sure why people have given them bad reviews in the past. The only thing I can think of is it's frustrating when you walk into the dmv without the required paperwork- which is clearly stated on the website- although it is a pain it isn't the fault of the location. I think people take their mistakes out on others-in this case this location. I highly recommend this location or I wouldn't be taking the time to write this. Thanks everyone! read more

The self service kiosks are not in service either. Waited with all of my documents already prepared to get in the queue. Took almost an hour to have my number called only to discover she hit the button prematurely. Now my number has been called but she isn't ready so there's numbers past me get called. She finally finishes up the lady ahead of me. Yes, finally get to get through this only to find out their computers are going down. Are you kidding me? Got there at 9:00, got out 4 hours later. When we arrived the line was out the door and the woman managing it was not rude, but not friendly either. Once we got to the "self-service" station pictured here an employee checked our documents and us into the machine and told us to wait. We waited, but not for long. Then a white-mustaches buccaneers checked our documents again and this time they weren't acceptable. Something about not being able to print a bank statement. He showed us a long, ill-designed print out that he said was on the website about what's acceptable. This buck had no southern charm. So we left, went to the bank to get a verified statement and came back. We awkwardly went back to the buccaneer, who did not remember us, and got our documents checked again and then sat down to wait. I was called and my husband came with me as we were instructed, since his number was right after mine. But the lady would not serve him until his number was called and magically it was never called. Meanwhile, one woman is yelling at someone for messing up her apartment number and they pretty callously told her she'd have to purchase a new one. I will stick up for the DMV here, they always say check this is accurate before you sign and this lady hadn't, but the 8th grade attitude towards her was unnecessary. So while many people are being called the numbers are sailing farther and farther away from my husbands. He goes to ask several times about it. No one will answer him and then finally someone tells him he's fourth in line, which was a straight up lie. Finally, the old buccaneer has come back from his hour lunch break and sees my husband is still waiting and actually takes some sympathy or something out on him and pushes him over to some other lady who was kind, efficient, and had a good sense of humor. But while he was getting his license we were able to see the old buck be rude and condescending to multiple other poor souls at eh DMV. Luckily, in TN, the DMV does not do vehicle registration so we were able to get that done in under 5 minutes elsewhere and there was even a great gyro place across the street. I will never move again just to avoid the DMV. read more

Due to the sorry state of the TN.gov's website and inability to use modern map software or suggest places where I could go for what I needed (a homeland-security mandated photo shoot) I went to the only place I know from the past you can do everything. I thought being Thanksgiving Eve that perhaps my prior experiences would be long in comparison, no... Now, for me, this was not a horrible time. I spent an hour and 30 or so complaining on Twitter, learning the average wait time was 15 minutes in Nashville, and discovering that people who were there for the driving test had been waiting for 3+ hours. I was told later that had I ignored the website instructions and just walked around downtown I could have located the correct facility with a 5-minute wait, but eh.. It was bad for others... heard about one woman who had been there 3 times and taken half days off each time, people who had been bounced after waiting 3 hours a previous day. My experience, honestly I was ok. I sat around and kivetched on Twitter. I'm reviewing mostly from other people's horror stories and from getting in in an hour and a half when my neighbor had been waiting for 2 hours at that point. Now, she had to take a driving test, but seriously. The tests in TN are a joke, it would be far more effective to put someone in a car, tell them to back up, and then throw a dead clown on the hood of the car and see if they freaked or controlled the car. A person two down had left hours before, came back and was amazed that she hadn't been called... simple out of state registration change. Get here when it opens. Otherwise, be prepared for a looooong wait. I'm still car-less, and I still take public transit and walk everywhere. I took bus 56 and walked here. I had a CA driver's license for 20+ years and rarely drove a car. I'm tempting fate by trying that same stunt in Tennessee. Anyway, I got here and stood for a few minutes in a line to for the information desk. Someone listened to what you needed and he gave you a ticket according to your situation. My ticket was roughly B46; they were on B20. I immediately thought that waiting for 20-odd people ahead of me wasn't going to take long. They were also giving out tickets in the "A", "C", and "F" lines. There were enough windows to hold about 20 clerks. They had about 5 clerks working that day. And since I arrived during lunch, several of the clerks were out at lunch at staggered intervals. If I had to guess, the "B" line I was in seemed to be for people who were out of state and getting their TN licenses for the first time. At least, that is what I could glean from the person whose number was directly ahead of me. Tickets with A or C seem to be for those who were renewing or some other clerical thing. Those lines were called faster and more frequently. And I think the F line was for new drivers waiting for a driver's test. They were called about once an hour and I saw a couple of teens in that line. The waiting room could hold about 75 people. And bring a book or your knitting -- but don't bring your gun (according to the sign at the entrance). And if you have a political aversion to the "Real ID" they use here, don't bother coming in or zip it and wait your turn. They also have TV monitors -- but they only show slow snippets of news and are more banal government announcements than anything else. I got my ticket at 12. By the time I moved seats to see the clerk handling the "B" line, I timed him and noticed that he took about 10-15 minutes processing each person. So, that meant about 4-6 people per hour. That meant roughly 3 hours for me, since I had been 24 people away when I first arrived. When I finally got in line, it was a smooth process. I brought every vital info with me, just in case: birth certificate, naturalization papers, marriage license, passport, Comcast bill, NES bill, (no wireless services bills are accepted), etc. I expected the vision test to be one of those lines of letters on a screen behind the clerk. Instead, there was this device at the window (which reminded me of those view finder camera toys with the slides when I was little). The device showed lines of numbers. Very easy test, but your vision may vary. You have the option of registering to vote here. You have to surrender your old state's driver's license. Then, you get your picture taken, you get your TN DL and you're out of there. The process was about 15 minutes and $12.50. And 3 hours of waiting time -- but I was stupid enough to have arrived at noon instead of 8:30 when they opened. read more

I'm 2 hours and 20 minutes into renewing my license. I have to get my picture taken because it's a milestone birthday renewal. There are some self serve kiosks to renew but you still have to wait for the picture. When I arrived, the board said 22 customers waiting. It got up to 43, now it's down to 36. This has to be one of the most miserable places on Earth. Plan on taking a day off work or at the very least half a day. There seems to be 9 "A" customers still ahead of me. I left Indiana when Mitch Daniels took over as Governor. I was told he streamlined the DMV to make it at least as pleasant as a root canal. I wish Bill Haslem would find out what Mitch did. Unfortunately, I was not treated equally at this facility. There are several couples that are occupying one chair, due to COVID capacity restrictions. My partner happens to be the same gender and we were the only ones that were asked to separate, with one person waiting outside. What a shame, we are all God's children and should be treated equally. read more

The way this center is operated seems to be extremely inefficient. I waited 3 hours and 30 minutes yesterday to apply for a TN license, since I just moved from LA (the DMV in Los Angeles is more efficient, and that's saying something) and based on the rate of service I had at least another hour still to wait. Between 12pm and 1pm the "number being served" board was turned off and they stopped calling numbers, apparently while the staff took their lunch break. Another desk continued calling names, but those appeared to be customers with different service needs than the main group who had been given numbers. After all that time I had to forfeit my place in the queue in order to make a business meeting so I'm back again at 8:30am for opening. read more

I'm not quick to complain, but this is the most frustrating DMV experience I've had to date. For almost 2 hours we were all left here while essentially the whole staff went on lunch and no one was told.. so no numbers were called during this time.. maybe 1. Part of the DMV experience is you're going to have to wait longer than anyone wants.. but this was extremely excessive and the staff wasn't very courteous. I've heard it's a quick process for renewal but everything else, not exactly. I recently moved here and was told it's only between this location and another for most license issues so I'd say either way just be prepared to spend the whole day here. Took me under an hour. Went around 11:45. Changed my out of state license to TN license. The check in kiosk was easy to use and I was seen in about 15-20 minutes. Completed my application online before I came and had all my documents I needed and was out of there in no time. Friendly staff too that helped me with any questions I had. I expected to wait hours but was very pleasantly surprised with how my trip turned out. read more

Worst service EVER! Have had to return 3 times now because they always need another form or paperwork. The reception area is FULL with people waiting outside. Nearly every person called to the desk is returned to the waiting area to wait longer. They should have a person sitting at each desk ready to do their job. TENNESSEE really needs to look at why there lines are so long to renew and get a drivers license. I just moved here from Virginia and have visited this process in many other states and most of them license vehicles and do titles as well and they do not have 4 hour waits. People are seriously frustrated in line and it will eventually cost you police staffing. Representatives send your administrators to the states who have perfected this process. For you sake only. Terrible place! Went to change back to a TN DL from my GA DL today. Spent 2 hours waiting for them to tell me I would still need to bring a copy of my birth certificate in. I had a TN DL 13 years before I had to change to a GA license when I relocated. They don't keep that on file from the original application. Why would they keep important documents on file that they require of their applicants? Way to make us proud TN. What blows my mind more is that I waited 2 hours to be told this. In Atlanta, of all places, took only 15 mins from start to end without all this nonsense of bringing back in a copy of my birth certificate. GA has their process together. Come on TN. One of the worst government office experiences I've ever had. I tried to swap my FL license for a TN one today and showed up 10 minutes after they opened with completed paperwork. I waited for over 3 hours, and was turned away when I didn't pass the eye test immediately. I'm nearsided in one eye and farsided in the other and wear strong contacts to balance this. I tried to explain that to them and retake it, but they were extremely rude about it and completely unsympathetic to the fact that the center is so inefficient. The workers there are miserable too. They turned off the machine and told me to leave. It's worth driving to Franklin to avoid this nightmare location. read more

So my road skills test was scheduled for last week and someone from this location has called and said it was rescheduled for this week I tried to call to confirm what day that was and nobody answered and it's still closed. Nobody has sent me a confirmation email. And the location when I tried to call says that it's temporarily closed. So why wouldn't anyone say anything when it's extremely important for me to get my license. The fact that I cannot drive until the next available appointment in October is not sitting well with my spirit. Someone should've confirmed or rescheduled my test again but they have not said anything and it's supposed to be either tomorrow or Thursday. I am highly upset with this driver service station and I am not happy that nobody has said anything in my road skills test or in between these two days. if you're looking for a place who will actually try to legally have you on the road don't come here. read more
