Since Black Ink is in Harvard Square and on Beacon Hill I'd probably go here first because it's so close to home even though they are my go-to places for cute and eccentric gifts. Need a quirky Christmas tree ornament made out of recycled magazine paper? Or perhaps a tote bag made out of recycled plastic, or an ice cube tray shaped like brains? Well, look no further than Davis Squared! There's a handful of fun little shops like this in the Camberville area...Joie De Vivre, Black Ink, Nomad, etc, and this happens to be Davis Square's contribution. (I don't count Magpie because of the emphasis on local artists there, whereas at the other listed places, the items seem to be more mass-produced). Anyway, it's a cute little shop where one can pick out fun little gifts for family and friends. Everything from accessories to candles to knick-knacks to fancy-pants bath/body products to smartass magnets to quirky kitchen gadgets (and so much more) can be found here. It's a regular stop for me when Christmas rolls around and I'm running around like a madwoman, trying to find fun little things to give hard-to-shop-for relatives. The prices aren't bad and vary quite a bit depending on what you're shopping for, and the staff is hands-off but very friendly. I was heartbroken when Pluto closed up shop and delighted that the proprietor's reincarnated in the form of Davis Squared a little while later. I stopped in when this place first opened and was not too impressed. The stuff was bland and not very useful. I went in yesterday desperate for gifts and I noticed that their stock improved. I saw a lot of cute men and woman's hats and scarves which looked unique, cute wallets and more. I'm in love with this store, but it's expensive. Tons of arty, local, cute things that if I were to ever live somewhere for more than 6 months or if I got like $5k from HGTV to redecorate my home, I'd definitely come here. That sounds silly, but it's the truth. Lots of random knick-knacks: I got an over-the-top beaded ring that I bust out with a more demure outfit and always get looks (stares) at my finger and it makes me proud. I also came in and spent $12 on a stack of 10 post-consumer waste, recycled paper, organic, blahblahblah notecards with a super cute design. (I was splurging. On notecards. It's like sometimes I don't really get life .. or something.) At the very least, I would suggest looking in on the shop and seeing if there's anything you like. So, so glad Davis Squared exists -- Davis needed just this place. It has great cards, cute jewelry, fun hats, and great lotions, some cute tote bags, etc. A great place for a little birthday, hostess, or baby gift. So, this store is on Yelp twice, apparently? It appears that the category I'm writing under is the new one for the store... This is a cute little store full of cute little things. It's mostly girly goodies with a touch of snark. This is the kind of place to get a little treat for someone else, or splurge on some whimsy. There are cards, magnets, baby clothes, soaps, gadgets for the house, and many more random things. They also have Davis Square athletic shirts, which I thought was pretty cool. Filling the much missed void that Pluto left when they closed shop, Davis Squared is almost brand new to the square and appeared to be a bit short on inventory...but was definitely worth the stop. I had been looking forward to their opening for some time and when I finally walked by and saw it was open, I diverted course and ducked in out of the rain. I walked around each display about 10 times before settling for a pair of earrings and ring at the counter. I loved them so much, I wanted to wear them right then and there. The woman behind the counter (I'm assuming it was the owner) must have thought I was nuts as I changed my earrings and ring while she was running my card, but she complimented my selection, allowed me to see the new accessories in a hand held mirror she procured and was generally quite nice which was a refrehsing change. While she was running my card, I also picked up a little Buddha and a love token for my love (rude of me to not get him a little bit of something, no?) and I was sent merrily on my way. That was about a month ago. I hope that, since then, Ihey've expanded their inventory. Although I spent more than anyone should ever spend on anything in Pluto, it still went out. I do solemnly swear that I will spend more to keep D2 in business. read more

I was very excited when i found out Melissa was opening D2! I was missing Pluto, and am even happier with D2. This is the first place i check out if i need to get a gift for someone. My husband, who likes to spend as much time out of the city as possible, used to drive through Davis Square to get to 93 North. I hated sitting in the traffic in Davis, until one day I looked up and noticed this incredible window display right on Highland Ave, before the turn out of Davis. Oversized flowers seemed to be blooming behind the glass, and there were so many colors on display I don't know how I ever could have missed that window. The next weekend, on a Saturday morning, I told my husband we were staying in, and he was going to that store with me. We headed to Davis Squared, and when we walked in, we were taken aback by all of the displays. Huge blown-up hearts hung from the ceiling. Purple, white and orange lanterns lit up the room. In the back, a sink was full of glittery bouncy balls that looked like bubbles. And the merchandise! They sold Davis Square tee-shirts, of course, but also others (for men and women), all made of soft cotton, uniquely designed, and reasonably priced. My husband and I each bought one. They sold Napa soaps and soaps shaped like cupcakes...in short, the store was a mix of class and brass, and my hubby and I had more than a few laughs taking it all in (they sell a compass just for getting around Boston, for example). The jewelry, a lot of it handmade, was beautiful: from the beaded and bright bracelets, to the glassblown rings, to the birthstone earrings. My husband got a brand-new, leather wallet that he gets compliments on almost every other day, and we also got an adorable gift for our friends who are expecting a baby: a black "rock star" onesie with a silver star in the middle. We spoke with the owner as we cashed out, who was friendly, enthusiastic, and clearly passionate about her store, its presentation, and all of the product in it. knick knacks, baubles, trinkets, doo-dads & whatnots in a nice little shop. that pretty much sums up d2 for me. i'm not too into the completely useless (and somehow, therefore, more costly) stuff, but if you really need martini glass shaped ice cubes, davis squared will sell you the trays. it's a nice little gift shop chock full of stuff i wouldn't buy for myself, but i'm happy to leave at someone else's house. they have stuff for the home, stuff for the baby, stuff to read, stuff to carry other stuff in, and stuff for the well-scarfed person. worth stopping in and shopping around. the staff (usually of 1) is friendly. an easy 3. if i were more into kitch, i'd go 4. read more

I agree with Johanna W's above review. The staff seemed nice and I love me some independent businesses, but I really couldn't find anything to buy here. To be honest, there was an array of snarky cards and some amazingly supercute laundry bags, that caught my eye but nothing that really grabbed me as a real "must have." My friend Amy had some success buying sparkly crystal earings there, that were affordable and very pretty, but I hope that, as the store finds it's feet (and it's niche in Davis) that it starts stocking a wider variety of more diverse items to pick through. I think it has good potential-- it just needs a few months to settle in. read more

Might be a cute shop if it wasn't clearly delineated into a Men's Section (such items as Manly Hip Flasks, moustache-decorated boxer shorts, and a book on how to be a bigger asshole) and a Ladies' Section (floral soap, scented candles, and kitchen gadgets). This store is adorable! Most of the items are completely unnecessary but very fun. Case in point: the "Foot in the Door" doorstop that is a small plastic shoe that you jam under the door to hold it open. I don't even need a doorstop, but at $7.50, it was too cute to pass up. read more

Every since they first opened I have loved this store. They carry beautiful handmade items, and luxury gifts, like shea butter soap, and hostess aprons. Walking around the store just makes you happy, seeing such beautiful colors and smelling such nice scents. But the truth is, I rarely let myself spend money on these items, because few of them are necessary. I did buy a beautiful Jesse Steele apron at this store a while ago. It has held up well and I have been very happy with it. Every once in a while I buy a card here or some little trinket. I'll continue to enjoy the store, though. read more

I have been a loyal customer to Davis Squared for 2 years because I love their cute products and local flare. But today I was disappointed in their customer service and false advertising. They are listed as a vendor for Green Streets Initiative walk/ride to work day as part of an awesome vendor list that offers discounts on this day for alternative transportation to work. However, when I tried to redeem this discount on the specified day the staff had to call the owner to learn what this even was and the owner still refused to acknowledge the discount. I say this out of courtesy to your Local customers: remove yourselves from the list or honor your word and provide the discount. Otherwise, you will start losing the loyal base of people such as myself. read more

It had a rough opening back when it opened - it was trying to distinguish itself from Magpie whilst not being Magpie - but d2 has really come into its own. If Magpie is for the unmarried hipster who really ought to be making-their-own-LOL-squirrel-birthday-cards but can't-be-bothered-because-life-is-short-and-death-comes-soon, then Davis Squared is for the married-and-offspring-having grown-up who discovered sometime after college that it's better to appear young and hip than to grow old and lame the way God intended, and it's easier to appear young and hip well into your 30s today than it ever was before thanks to places like d2. A great source of cards for all occasions, very cute and fun baby gear, and various useless LOL items for your kitchen and living room. A great source of gifts. Gets four-stars from me because I don't have to go into Harvard Sq. or Newbury St. to get my favorite shaving stuff from Amenity. Just one of the gems that makes Davis square a destination spot and a great place to live. Originally this store was on Highland Ave. and I always passed and never went in. Now, they have moved to be on Elm St. and I think they will be able to appeal to more people. The have fun out of the ordinary gifts, but their prices aren't over the top. They have fun Davis Square t-shirts. It is a gift shop, but it has an appeal for everyone. They have a small kids section and they also have a men' s gifts area. I found some great gifts for co-workers and family here. I highly recommend it if you are in the area. The owner is also very nice, and on the day of their anniversary they had cupcakes. read more

Cool stuff. Im glad Pluto from a while ago has been reincarnated. I, too was bummed when it closed a while ago. I went to Midnight Madness and the people in the store were cool and it was so nice to see it packed and festive. A little embarrased to go in there sometimes because of the cute women behind the counters and women shoppers... Over the years at Pluto I have bought various gifts for people like cards and jewelry and clothes. Theres cool stuff and bags/wallets for guys too. Along with the ultra cool comic book store, it makes "the other-street-from-the-one-that-the-Burren-is-on" hip and on the rise.
