It is now mid-September and in spite of delivery date for entire set for early JULY, they have yet to ship me the MAIN TABLE, which means I haven't been able to use the chairs and bench I purchased as part of this set. I had a wonderful experience with the Account Executive David. I walked in and was greeted very kindly and shown exactly what I was looking for. In particular I was shopping for the embody chair and could not decide between the regular embody or the gaming embody. All it came down to was the futuristic design of the gaming model that was fascinating to look at. But the comfort with the cooling foam as well was very nice. David was very thorough and thoughtful with showing me all the mechanics of the chair in person to cater to my needs. I now have an office chair that will serve me for the next 10+ years. I would gladly recommend those who are looking at office chairs/furniture as a investment into better health to stop by and test the furniture for yourself. The website has all the facts of being designed with physicians so the chair speaks for itself. Also shipping is much quicker than anticipated. Stated about two weeks but received the chair in 3 days. Nothing but good things to say. Again thank you David for all the help along the way. You are awesome!! read more

This should really be a one star review. The extra star is for the decor the actual store itself. In short, Extremely poor shopping experience with desperate and pushy sales tactics. What part of "i am going to look around a bit by myself" repeated twice by the way, should somehow mean let's talk for 5 minutes. No I don't want a water, no I don't want to throw away my coffee, no I don't want to hear your defensive attitude as to why you feel the need to be "extra" nice. And to somehow put this on the customer is ludicrous. Get your act together and get a clue, or go to some actual sales training. We are not in Shanghai where this sort of sales behaviour is the norm. To management: your sales people are losing you business... I guarantee it. read more

I had the best service experience of my life at this DWR (I'm mid-40s). The staff is wonderful! I worked with Adam L & purchased about 15 items over a 1/2 year period to furnish my new apartment. This was smack in the middle of the pandemic when there were heaps of supply chain & availability issues. Some of the items arrived quickly, within a couple weeks, others were delayed by months. Adam set expectations & guided me through all of it, provided updates, made sure I was getting the best sale prices, rushed to correct a couple mistakes for free (I'd forgotten to specify the leg color on a desk, and a table showed up in a different wood), and offered an incredible discount on one item I'd ordered that changed manufacturing locations & looked a bit different. He was so knowledgeable, helpful, and patient, esp with fabric choices, and some waffling on my part trying to decide between chair and sectional sizes. It really was the best retail experience I've ever had, both with the build-quality & beautiful design of my purchases and with the service--I'm so happy with how my apt turned out. I also worked with Andrew on a couple days when Adam was out, he is so relaxed & great, too, & the store manager, Margaret, who is wonderful, warm & friendly--she extended a sale date for me, & pulled some strings in a tricky situation. Delivery crews were also fantastic, navigating everything up a narrow steep staircase to my attic apt, and assembling everything quickly & expertly right there. One piece of advice: it's good to know which type of delivery service an item is attached to--some usually larger items are linked to "white glove" delivery & can be partially unpacked in the street to squeeze them up tight spaces, & are assembled on-site. Other crews (standard service?) are only allowed to leave items on a front porch if they don't fit in a door or up a staircase. So I'd recommend asking which type of delivery service an item is attached to, otherwise you might be confused or disappointed when something is left on your porch instead of being brought in. Anyway, highly recommended! I will always purchase through the store & not online for anything significant, it just really helps to have someone from the local store in your corner in case something needs to be returned, or to get status updates, etc. & I like knowing I'm helping out the local branch :) read more

Huh? My experience is completely different from other reviewers. Received a bottle of water at the entrance, but felt no pressure from the salesperson. They offer the very best with prices reflecting it; I haven't made a purchase yet in my two visits, but the actual products are excellent. I'm just not rich yet : ) read more

I'll descibe my shopping experience for those interested. I came in with a very specific goal: to try out different Herman Miller office chairs (they're truly worth every penny) to see which would fit my body type best. My new year's resolution was to prioritize personal health, and I sit a lot for work so my doctor suggested these chairs. There's not a lot of places that have Herman Miller chairs in stock, and I definitely wanted to try them out in person to see which I liked best before purchasing one. I called ahead and told the associate I would be coming in to test the chairs. I arrived later that day, and the salesperson, Adam, had the different models ready to show and suggested a few that he thought would suit me best. Adam was fantastic- patiently showing me all the features and explaining the chairs' histories and main differences. I did not feel rushed or pushed in any way and it was a very pleasant experience. At the end I asked for a quote for the model, size, and specs I wanted and told him I would think it over. The quote came in a fancy envelope with a printout of the specs. 24 hours later I called and placed my order. About a week later the chair arrived (assembled) from their warehouse. I seriously think this is the best money I have spent in years. The only problem I have is I notice every other chair I sit in is heartbreakingly bad. I am very happy to have shopped at Design Within Reach, and it was exactly what I was hoping to get. I can't comment on other peoples' experiences (I wasn't browsing or casually shopping etc) but Adam and the rest of the staff were terrific. read more

Oh my god I HATE walking into this store, though sometimes I have to in order to get samples. The staff is unpleasantly aggressive, there is in particular one African American lady (Cecilia?) who is more aggressive than others, follows me around at an indecently close, unpleasant, invasive proximity. She even lectures me how I shouldn't shop online (seems like she never remembers she already gave me that spiel) because I should help local businesses: well guess what lady, you're making my experience miserable and that's why I try to shop online!! Also, I dare you to lecture a caucasian man and tell him how he should & shouldn't be spending his money and time. I know I'm making assumptions, but she makes me disrespected personally such that I feel like I'd be better treated if I weren't a young-looking Asian woman. In fact, I try to call or go to places like Lekker or Formaggio Kitchen to order instead of online at yliving, danishdesignstore, Wholefoods etc because I like to be supportive. But this store staff really makes it difficult. read more

I ordered a Aeron chair back in early May. Weeks went by, the shipping date went by, and I heard nothing. I emailed twice asking if the order would be fulfilled. Nothing. I called and left a message. Days went by. Then, finally, six weeks after the order was placed I got a reply with an apology and a statement that they'd credit us 10% off. Now the chair has suddenly shown up and yet the credit wasn't even applied! Truly appalling customer service. People need to be kept informed! read more

While the furniture here is beautiful, they have the worst customer service. We ordered a couch that they did not deliver on time and when they did deliver it, they had brought two couches and refused to leave us with just one. When I called the store, they told me that they use a delivery service that isn't internal and essentially that it isn't their problem. I don't know how them putting two couches out for delivery isn't somehow their problem, but fine. I waited about a month for new delivery and they bring the couch in the wrong color. Now they won't replace it without charging us a new shipping fee of almost 400 and a 10% restocking fee--for the wrong couch to be returned. read more

Very, very rude staff, and expect ample problems with delivery (late delivery, damaged deliveries, etc.) for which the salespeople, managers, and company will not take credit. The space is beautiful and well staffed. The best thing to do is to develop a relationship with someone who works there who you feel comfortable with and get on their email list. That way you can be the first to hear about any sales. I love working with Cecelia and Pat (formerly at the South End location). Cecelia really knows her stuff and is very warm and friendly. I've always felt good about my purchases from her. Other things that make it easier to shop here (if you have the budget!!): regular sales throughout the year, offers of water while you shop, and a small pkg lot behind the shop, off Trowbridge, for loading purposes. read more

I have shopped at this DWR for many years. However, today was the last time I will step foot in this store. Over the years I've acquired several Herman Miller pieces, the Lady Chair, and some Sapporo shelving units. However, it seems every time I go into this store, it's impossible to be greeted or acknowledged by any salesperson. I was intent on purchasing a $3000 Herman Miller chair for my office to take advantage of the sale. However, one saleswoman was too busy on her computer to be bothered. When she did finally get up to go to the other side of the store, she walked right by me without even blinking. I was then passed by the man in the ponytail from whom I purchased a Herman Miller storage unit last year. He, too, could not be bothered to ask me if I needed anything. I usually like to try to support local businesses whenever I can expediently do so, but my experience buying here was unsettling. They employ very high-pressure sales tactics, as I found out when I came in to buy a desk chair. I had an idea of the model I wanted, but unfortunately they did not have that model in my size, so I had to make an educated guess as to whether or not the correct size would be a better fit than the one they had in stock. They said they'd have to order it in, and then they told me I had to sign a 2-page liability waiver just to get the thing shipped. I told them I had no intention of signing any such document, and it seems ridiculous to me. After all, I'm buying a desk chair, but with the terms and conditions on the document, you'd think I was buying a goddamn life insurance policy! It seems to me that this store is targeted toward affluent, pretentious city-dwellers from Cambridge who have more money than brains. They treated me with respect and dignity right up until I refused to sign their idiotic waiver. You don't need to sign your life away to buy a chair, that's just ridiculous, and there'd be no need to ship it if they kept a decent inventory in the first place. read more

What was once a remarkable company celebrating extraordinary products and services, DWR has now turned into a disaster. Think carefully when considering purchasing anything from this store and perhaps all others under the same name. After having an unusually unresponsive salesperson --I had to call 3 times, 5 months ago, regarding my chosen fabric--he now informs me, after first writing to me that the order will be arriving at the warehouse this weekend-- that the couch is now delayed AT LEAST two more months. "It didn't make it onto the container" was the response-- after I had to call three more times to get some clarification. The order is an expensive sectional. I only wonder if and when it ever does arrive, it will be the order that I placed. With this kind of incredible inattention, I should have gone elsewhere. I hope you do. read more

If you want your chair delivered with the wrong material and color and have to discover this after hauling it up 5 stories and unpacking it yourself these are the people for you. Then to get the new chair they claim is done okay delivered with complimentary "white glove" service has taken now over 2 weeks and I am still waiting for Adam at the Cambridge store to okay it with the delivery people. I beg to differ from the negative reviews I have seen. We recently visited the Cambridge store and had a very good experience. Parking was bog simple. We were greeted by very friendly staff people who made a special effort to make us comfortable. The person who walked us through the furniture options was very knowledgeable (She has a degree in design.). When we made our choices the set up for delivery was efficient and very understandable. Actual delivery and set up was more prompt than we expected and the set up was very smooth. read more

I have purchased Sayl chair with full options for slightly over 800 dollars. I asked the sales guy about the arm being fully adjustable more than twice and he said it is. But today I got the chair and it turned out to be only height adjustable. He said he would double check and his response was from he went over the document with me to the conversation never happened. Either he is lying or at best is incompetent. When I talked about returning the chair, he mentioned the return shipping fee in addition to restocking fee. Originally he said within 30 days I can return and they will only charge the restocking fee. I can live with the arm being only height adjustable, but can't stand distorting facts. My wife was there, too. I am glad I experienced this personally before I spend major money for bedroom sets for all my four bedrooms. Don't listen to the sales guy and check every details yourself, and record conversation if you could. I have found out that you can get the same chair from Amazon or somewhere else for the same price or better without return hassle and fees. read more

We have bought furniture here years ago and had a positive experience. This time it was a disaster. Several sales people descended on us, eager to sell us anything. When we returned to purchase two expensive chairs on a recent tax-free weekend, the staff was frenetic, trying to log as many orders as possible. We specifically purchased two pricey chairs "in stock." When I called a few days ago to check on the status, it turns out that the salesperson had NEVER placed the order in their system and there was only one chair remaining. He expected me to take this chair and wait for the second which is back ordered for 2-3 months! I told him that was unacceptable. He never apologized for his error. BTW, it turns out that "in stock" for Cambridge means the furniture is at their facility in Kentucky. A truck goes to "Boston" only once a week, which is actually their warehouse in Worcester, MA. THEN they schedule your delivery. Always ask what "in stock" means... Never again. read more
