If you're coming here for a steak, you're in the right place. I've ordered steak here twice and…read moreboth times the steak itself was genuinely excellent, well-seasoned, cooked to temperature, the kind of result that justifies the price tag. No complaints there. The trouble starts the moment you venture beyond the cut of beef. On both steak visits, the sides disappointed. The Yukon gold potatoes tasted off, hard to put a finger on exactly why, but something wasn't right. The tater tots were fine, though really only worth ordering for the truffle aioli that came with them; the tots themselves were forgettable. Neither side felt like it belonged on a steakhouse menu at this price point. I also came in once hoping a Bolognese would impress and it didn't. The pasta was cooked so al dente it crossed the line into underdone, and the sauce had the consistency of a broth rather than the rich, clinging ragu you'd hope for. It felt like a dish from a completely different kitchen. The steaks here are legitimately good, and if that's all you're after, you'll leave happy. But a great meal is more than its centerpiece, and everything surrounding the steak feels like an afterthought. Come for the beef, manage your expectations for everything else.

There were 4 of us and we sat in a very comfortable booth. The food was expensive but very good. Nestled above the heart of Chinatown -- in what could be an artist's charming top floor studio loft…read more-- is My Thai Vegan Café, a modern veg take on traditional Thai dishes that feature an impressive array of shredded veggies and mock meats tossed into a wok. Here are some important distinctions to know for my fellow veg foodies: If you are the type of vegetarian who generally avoids Thai food because of the sneaking suspicion every dish has fish sauce, then this place is truly paradise. However, for people used to eating Thai food, it should be noted that this is not an authentic Thai eatery -- it is Vietnamese-owned with a Chinese staff, and I find that most of the dishes have a more traditional Vietnamese palate. I am writing this as a person who's consumed a lot of Thai food and couldn't help but make comparisons. The "fish sauce" is a combination of vinegar, chili sauce, and sugar--it works as a substitute and is generally offered as a side to garnish your main entrees, but those who eat Thai regularly will notice a subtle difference lacking in the pungent umami realm. The mock meats are either made with textured soy (chicken and beef), vital wheat gluten, or konjac root starch (same as shirataki noodles) for mock shrimp, which can have a gummy texture. For newcomers, the curries come highly recommended by staff, especially the mango yellow curry or pumpkin curry. Most tables also order the fried wonton appetizers and summer rolls. The wok noodles are a classic, but lack the same savoriness as traditional Thai eateries, I'd recommend the Pad Woon Sen plus, which comes with an assortment of mock shrimp, beef, tofu and chicken for just $1 more. I also tried the Tom Kha, which had a smooth coconut broth, but lacked herbal kick and tasted like it was missing the deep steep of lemongrass and galang root -- adding lime juice gave it a nice brightness and burst of flavor. Lots of reviews also recommend the birds nest, which is a fried nest of shredded taro with vegetables and protein inside. Do not order the Tom Yum, maybe it was an off day but the soup was a sodium bomb and couldn't be consumed. The restaurant is located up two flights of stairs in what feels like an intimidating, gritty stairwell tagged with graffiti. The space itself is warm and inviting though, decorated with lots of plants and string lights. The staff is friendly and attentive upon walking in and taking your order but then leaves you to enjoy your meal after serving. The dishes come in hot, large portions and every entree is plenty for two moderately hungry people. The pricing is fair, with most dishes between $15-25. I recommend going with a group and getting several items to share.

Both were served with a bit of greens and french onions to balance the rich beef. The foie gras was a good starter, kind of like a French onion soup with seared foie on top. They definitely seem to apply their French onion flavors in a couple places. Sides left a bit to be desired, the peas and mushrooms were a miss (overcooked) and while the sweet potato looked impressive the pork belly was dry. Cocktails were on the sweeter side, so wine is probably the better play. Ambiance is traditional Boston vibes and quite lively given the Back Bay location. Overall, solid steak and service, but I'm not sure I understand the hype for the price.

We started off with the French onion soup which was flavorful and pipping hot (much appreciated). The table bread came cold and stiff so not much to enjoy. Calamari was fresh but they overloaded with veggies! We played it safe and got the fillet mignon which was cooked to perfection but the side of mashed potatoes we could've dealt without (unless you're a fan of non-creamy and break apart) mash). Ambience is very nice, but expected to be very loud inside due to the multi floor levels. The star of the show by far was the milk and cookies and we appreciated them coming out hot, but we surely would've loved a glass versus a side of milk.

I know there is a competition between Mike's and Modern about who has the best pastries, but Mike wins if you want flavored cannolis. Any flavor you can think of is posted on the walls. I tried the butter pecan and the Dubai chocolate, but I was blown over by the Dubai chocolate. My wife also prefers the macaroons and other cookies at Mike's. Cash only, but the prices are good. Mike's goes crazy with the string when they tie up the boxes...I guess that's a Boston thing. We came back on a rainy day and were able to order right away. This place is worth a visit.

It's probably because it's a block from the Freedom Trail near Paul Revere's house and popular Italian restaurants and shops. If you see people walking around with a white (multiple cannolis/desserts) or blue (single cannoli) box tied with string, you know you must be nearby a Mike's Pastry. Though the line gets long, it does move quickly, and there are periods where it's not so crowded inside. It's cash only at this location. I didn't think I'd be here that day and realized I didn't crab enough cash but saw the sign for Uber Eats and GrubHub pick up, so I just placed an order for pick up from my phone on Uber Eats. It took about 5 minutes when I got my cute blue box order. There is a Bank of America down the same street if you need to withdraw cash which I later did. I'm sure there's also ATMs nearby. I think it's easier and quicker to order through Uber Eats or GrubHub and pick up. I've been here once before about 12 years ago. I tried the pistachio cannoli that time and loved it. This time, I wanted to try a different flavor, so I got the hazelnut cannoli. It didn't have the nuts I was expecting from the photo on the wall. It didn't quite taste like hazelnut to me at all. I regretted not trying something else. I eventually did at Hub Hall (another food hall) connected to North Station. This location is a little more expensive by $1-2 for cannolis compared to the one in Hub Hall and sells other desserts like turnovers, donuts, croissants and sticks if you don't want a cannoli (but then why come here for anything else?) There's also nowhere to sit.
