My friend in mckinney told me that she drives all the way from there to get take out from dawon. So I had to give them a try! I knew about this for a while but I had a low expectation because it's really hard to find authentic/delicious Korean restaurants in Allen. We ordered fish bento, donkatsu bento, and bulcogi meal. It was a lot of food and so many different sides. I may be one of the few but I loooooved that potato side dish. I am never a potato person but the texture was just right and a sweetness hit the spot. Everything was delicious except for mackerel but it is really hard for grilled mackerel to stay fresh and yummy after a little bit. I bet if we ever had a chance to dine in, it will be awesome. Finally found my goto K-foodie! So happy. First time I tried the restaurant I ordered sundubu jjigae, popular tofu soup with pork! It was soooo good. Second time I decided to try the spicy ricecake aka tteokbokki, kimchi omelet and sundubu! The tteokbokki was spiced perfectly not too spicy hot, I ordered large and froze my left over but it only lasted another day and then it was GONE! neomu mas-iss-eoyo Love the sides, zucchini, caramelized potatoes, mayo broccoli and kimchi! They even threw in free dumplings! It comes with rice. Best part is it's in Allen, Imagine that! Originally from California Korean restaurants in LA is almost part of the culture and almost all the K restaurants are as good! Happy that Dawon is as good! It was a cold day so it seemed like a good day to get soup. We went here for a Saturday lunch right when it opened. Immediately I was liking the decor. It's a little dark, but had many bright and colorful touches to the decor. The music was kind of funny; they were playing soft jazz versions of popular hits from artists such as Nirvana and Rihanna. I guess I liked it because it is similar to the many Asian restaurants and shops I used to frequent while I was living in LA. It's good to know something that reminds me of old home can be found near my new home. The lady who attended to us was very sweet. Even though it was our first time there, she treated us like old time friends, making sure that we were okay and also making light hearted jokes. We started off with the japchae noodles, which was freshly made to order. This is probably the best japchae I've had in awhile. We also had the galbi tan soup, which is a short rib soup which I had done spicy. My fiance the seafood tofu soup, which came with plenty of seafood and had a good spice as well. The banchan sides that we received came in a good variety and every item was delicious. Everything we had was very good and I would order them again plus more. Overall, this is an excellent spot to get Korean food in the Allen area. Not only is the food good, but the atmosphere and hospitality are great as well. I would highly recommend it. Really good food. I ordered bibimbop. One of the best I've ever had, and I have literally tried dozens. The 3 star is because they have the AC turned so that it felt really warm inside. ~Food~ We got the Jap Chae (Stir fried glass noodles), Bulgogi (BBQ), Modum Soontofu Jiigea (tofu soup with combo of beef, seafood), and Osam Ulgogee (Stir fried squid and pork belly in red chili sauce). Everything was standard and was decent. It wasn't terrific but it wasn't bad at all. It was as if I had dinner over at a Korean household. If I were to come again, I'd probably go for the Kalbee (short ribs) and Japchae. ~Price/Quality/Quantity~ The total of the 4 dishes ended up being around $60. It's not cheap but it's not crazy. ~Atmosphere/Service~ The place is quite small but was surprisingly filled on a cold Saturday night. It looks like the restaurant might be run by a Korean family and though there were only 2 waiters, the service was great. They checked on us several times and I even saw them patiently explain Korean food to tables that were trying it for the first time. ~Bottom Line~ Come here for your Korean fix. I loved the original location and this new location is just as good. My go to is the tofu soup with seafood. Their level of spiciness is just right. They definitely have some of the best selection and quality of banchan. Of course it's unlimited and the sweet Korean ladies do not mind getting more for you. They still offer some Japanese dishes as well. We've only had the fried rice and my hubby really enjoyed that. There are some special dishes that might not be on the menu like the army stew. The stew is comes with ramen noodles. kimchi, sausages, spam, cheese, and so many other goodies so it's worth sharing with at least another person or two. Service is fast and friendly. read more

My wife and I are not experts on Korean food. For some reason I did a Yelp search for a Korean restaurant in our area and this place popped up. The reviews were excellent and we are adventuresome so we gave it a try. Good call! This place felt like it took me on a trip to Korea, although we have never been there! when you walk in for the first time you will know what I mean. Our hostess spoke very little English but when it is about food it is pretty easy to communicate. The restaurant is very small and very clean. The serving utensils were different than I have ever seen. Kind of like aluminum chop sticks and cups. The miso soup was the best we can recall at any Asian restaurant. They serve about 8 little food amenities on the table to go with your main dish. Our food was excellent. I cannot pronounce any of the names, so I suggest looking at the menu pictures. My Favorite restaurant in Texas. Here's what's good. This place is not just the best restaurant in Allen Texas, it is my personal favorite in all of Texas. Yes, it even beats the amazing BBQ and Sushi places which I also love. Enough adjectives, what you should try... M6. Galbitang - The bone broth of this soup is unique, rich, and so flippin' full of flavor that once I ordered it, it was all i ordered the next 4 times i visited this restaurant. I could not get enough of it, and was sad when I finished the entire thing by myself. I still order it every other time I'm there. M16. Dolsot Bibimbab - With the Marinated Beef, this dish is full of flavor and wonderful vegetables. Then, you scrape the bottom of the bowl and find the delicious awesomeness of the golden crackling n crispy rice as it slowly browns from the heat of the bowl. The texture of the rice elevates this dish which was already awesome to a new level. YUM. T1. Chicken Terriyaki - Normally, I don't even like this dish. But here, its incredible! The chef's sauce is like nothing I've ever had anywhere else, and I lived in Los Angeles CA and Boulder CO for years, both obvious culinary hot spots. This chef is not just pre-ordering sauces to make a quick buck. Even the broccoli that accompanies this dish... its like candy. Yes, CANDY! F2. We stopped by for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. We weren't too hungry so we mainly ordered from the appetizer menu. Based on Yelp reviews, we ordered the Japchae, Steamed dumplings, fried dumplings and tempura vegetables. The steamed dumplings were our favorite. Unfortunately, we didn't know that Japchae has beef in it and being non-beef eaters, pointed out to our server that this should've been listed on the menu. We were told that it's common knowledge that Japchae is made with beef. Not too inclusive of those who are not too familiar with Korean food. Completely satisfied. Here for a business trip and wanted some comfort food and I got it. The soon tofu was exactly what I wanted after my flight. They had a nice variety of side dishes and offered more but I was stuffed. At the end of the meal it was a nice touch to offer a slice of watermelon. I'm glad to see Dawon move from Plano to Allen, which is now a closer drive for us. It's in a really deep part of East Allen off Allen Heights and Main which is strange for a Korean restaurant. We've eaten at their previous location in Plano off 15th and always enjoyed our experience. We ordered just two dishes to share between my wife and I, Kalbi and Kimchi-jjigae for lunch. Combined with a bowl of rice and solid banchan, we finished it all for a nice food coma afterwards. I did like how they provided some romaine lettuce and ssamjang to eat with the kalbi. Overall a good food experience and nice welcome addition close to home. We'll definitely be back as regulars. read more

I only really take the time to write reviews if a place truly deserves an outstanding rating and review. Dawon fits the bill. Like other reviewers, I went to the original location in Plano. I was deeply saddened when the restaurant was sold. To my pleasant surprise, the original owners opened this location! While this is great for everyone in Allen, I find myself needing to make a 35 minute trip in one direction to eat here again. It is well worth it. I write this after my fourth visit for dinner in the last two weeks. So what makes Dawon worth an over hour-long round trip drive? The answer to this rhetorical question deserves more than a line or two. First, if you are familiar with Korean cuisine, you know the side dishes are part of the experience. Most places might give you 4 or so of these, sometimes of questionable quality, age, and source. In contrast, you can tell the side dishes at Dawon are freshly made and you usually get about six or more of them. The side dishes will vary from day-to-day but my personal favorites are the pancakes, bean sprouts, kimchi (of course), potato, and fried pumpkin. Now that last one is more of a secret menu kind of thing. It is not a regular side item but, if you ask nicely, you might be able to get them to make a batch. In my experience, it is a unique side dish that I have not seen at other Korean restaurants. Ever. As for main dishes, my usual staple consists of a small Japchae and two orders of Kalbi. Let's start with the Japchae. You know how some places will give you a bunch of noodles and then finding the beef and other goodies is akin to a finding Waldo in a "Where's Waldo" book? Not here. The Japchae is loaded up with all types of savory beef goodness, veggies, and mushrooms. It is perfectly seasoned and very flavorful. You could make a meal out of this alone. Moving on to the Kalbi. Just order it. Seriously, just order it (unless you are rabbit (for the rabbits: it does come with some lettuce and sauce to make wraps). The Kalbi is the best I've had in the metroplex. I know a lot of people like the cook-it-yourself places but, in my opinion, the temperature does not get high enough when you cook-it-yourself to properly sear the meat and caramelize the sugars and onions. It is sweet, savory, and rich all at the same time. I've brought family and friends here who have tried other dishes. Everyone was always very pleased with what they ordered. I also usually order something to go for dinner the next night (due to that hour round trip) and found that the beef fried rice and Bulgogi are good choices for take-home and re-heat goodness. Some final notes. This is a true mom and pop restaurant. And they just opened up not too long ago but I have noticed there are more and more people there for dinner each time I go. It might take them a little time to hire some wait staff if they keep up this level of business or if they get busier than they currently are. Have a little patience if it is busy and it will be worth the wait. read more
