I try and spread my business among all the breakfast places in town. They all offer a different , special ambiance that make them endearing and the Day & Night diner is one of those. It is a classic 50's diner and was established in town in 1952 or there about . It's simple. Not the menus you are used to. One page is all Carl needs. When I order and I always order the same thing. I hadn't been here since the sixties. Now that I have come for a few weeks I no longer have to order Carl just gives me a nod and I nod back. Three eggs over easy, hash browns and a pancake instead of toast. Then I put the eggs and hash browns on top of the pancake. It's great. . There are no eggs Benedict . The people here are an eclectic group of people from all walks of life. It's an old diner feel! Most of the people are old friends . Carl's wife is the only waitress. The service isn't slow but deliberate. There are stories etc. that you have to hear. It like being at a neighborhood party . Carl likes to pun or says things with a double entandre and see who catches what he says. There are many different newspapers. I haven't gotten myself to the point where I feel comfortable voicing my opinion. Carl's wife kinds of operates around Carl . They do dinner on Friday nights and I heard it's great. Fish etc . This place is not as bad as people make it out to be. If it was, place would have been shut down years ago. Diner car is 80ish years old so has seen plenty of people walk through its doors. One of the oldest, if not the oldest, businesses is Palmer. I use to come here often, especially in my high school / college days. Always got the blueberry pancakes, in my opinion some of the best I have sunken my teeth into. Can put plenty of butter and syrup on them and they still soak them up. Today, no different. Was in town for a haircut and was really early so stopped here for breakfast. Blueberry pancakes, sausage patties and some hash. I am really just starting to eat hash. Cannot compare to many places, I enjoyed it enough to where I ate it all before eating anything else. Pancakes just as I remembered them. Would have eaten a triple stack but those days are over. They are big and fluffy to begin with as pancakes should be. Missed this place and happy to have made it back here. First time in years , I love the old diner feel , the hospitality, like meeting an old friend . I ordered the hash and eggs. Same thing I reviewed 3 days ago somewhere else . Everything was good , not bad, not great . It's what I expected , the eggs were a little overdone , the hash was out of a can style , the hash browns were good , toast was good . Cute and very old diner. 6 booths, 12 counter seats. Very much for locals (Trump posters at entrance.) 1 cook, 1 waitress. With no one ahead of us it¹ took 20 minutes to get a booth cleared, 15 min to order 30+ min for food. That said, best Greek omelet I have ever had. 3 eggs, loaded with fresh spinach, olives and feta piping hot. Prices very reasonable ($11). read more

My 2nd ever stop here. First time w Pots & Pans for muffins and coffee. This time, for a full breakfast. D & N is a classic American dining car, built in 1942. Karl, the effusive owner / cook has been here since 1986. Smallish space w maybe 5 or 6 booths, and about 12 stools at the counter. Place was packed when I arrived at 10:15, but I was able to snag the last remaining stool, and it was right in front of the grill! I ordered the "Super" omelet - comes w 3 eggs, ham, sausage, bacon, cheese, and onions, as well as toast and HFs. All of that food for only $8.50 (Karl says prices haven't been raised in about 10 years). And his cost for eggs went from roughly $35 / case pre-pandemic, to over $100. As Karl says, "That's why I drive a Dodge instead of a Mercedes. Food was excellent. Coffee was bottomless. Karl is a magician w two spatulas wielded. I understand that the local hens are trying to unionize. They are working forced overtime trying to keep up w the 90 dozen eggs / week that Karl needs (and roosters are exhausted). Doing the math, at 90 dozen / wk, Karl has cooked 2,021,760 eggs since 1986, give or take (margin of error +/- 3%). Couple other things....cash only. Open 7 days / week. Street parking (free). Oh dear. I have to say this was one of the worst diner experiences I've had in recent memory. And it breaks my heart, because this is such a charming old-fashioned building. I'm going to hold out hope that like Brielle S. mentioned, when Carl is holding down the grill, breakfast is fantastic. But I pulled in on a Friday evening hoping to get the classic diner breakfast for dinner. Except they don't do that at Day & Night. And that's fine. So the kids and I opted for our second choices. My daughter got the hot dog, I ordered the chicken cutlet sandwich (lettuce, tomato, onion, light mayo), and my son requested the grilled cheese. We split an order of fries. Had the service not been so painfully slow, I might have been tempted to ask for the problems with our food to be corrected. But every time I looked at the waitress, she had both hands in her hair and was furiously scratching her scalp. The less she touched our plates, the better. Our fries arrived unseasoned. The hot dog was burnt. And my sandwich had no onions, plus was served heavy on the mayonaise. To add insult to injury, while we were eating, the tables around us were being cleaned with some kind of industrial spray that made everything smell and taste like cleaning fluid. At least the grilled cheese sandwich was unimpeachable, if unremarkable. I did enjoy the bun that my sandwich was served upon. And the whole meal was remarkably inexpensive. So that, along with the promise of a better breakfast, raises this place up to a second star. In my heart of hearts, I believe Day & Night can do better. Maybe one day we'll be passing through again during the breakfast hour, and will be able to give the place another try. read more

This place is a cozy train car. A little hard to find. Because the end of the train car is what faces the road. Both of our breakfasts were amazing. The toast was a good size piece of bread. Not little sandwich bread. My toast had butter on the hole piece. Not just a pat on each piece. The eggs were cooked perfectly. I prefer my bacon lightly cooked and it was also perfect. Day & Night is one of my regular favorites. Mostly, I just love going out for breakfast! It's consistently good at Day & Night. My father's favorite thing it to sit at the counter, and so we always do. The banter when Carl (Karl?) the owner & cook is there is a big part of the attraction, and it makes me wonder how he can remember all the orders, cook, and joke with people all at the same time. With a nod to Palmer's Polish community influence, kielbasa is even on the breakfast menu. I finally tried Day & Night for lunch at my father's urging. He wanted to go on a day that offered clams (Thursday & Friday, I believe); I couldn't imagine that fish in Palmer was a good idea. I tried the fish & chips, though, and I was very surprised. The fries, in particular, had that glassine quality that is very difficult to find. They were super-crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I like the home-town feel and the classic train-car setting, and I honestly like that the service is less formal than you might get elsewhere. I find it to be part of the charm, and now that some of the staff know me, it does feel nice to be a "regular." read more

I have been stopping at this diner intermittently for probably 35+ years. Today will most likely be my last visit. The last 2 visits prior to today did not go well either but I tried to give them another chance. I prefer to give my business to small business owners. I stop on my way to work so I am not there for a leisurely dine. Scrambled eggs, in and out. I stopped one morning, owner was behind the counter, 2-3 customers were there. I sat down, owner said hello and then went to the back kitchen. Did not even offer drinks. He must have forgotten I was there. I waited more than10 minutes then left. Next visit, wife was cooking, apparently working alone. 4 other customers there. I was served a drink at my counter seat, and then she started a conversation with a customer, no orders on the grille. After a 20+ minute wait I had to get up and ask if she had started my order yet. She had not but then did it quickly. Today's visit was the worst. I was served drinks by the waitress and paid her in advance for my meal. I needed to be on my way to work. I sat at the counter right at the grille. I waited 35 minutes for scrambled eggs. Another customer came after me, was served his meal and was gone before my meal ever reached the grille. The owner could obviously see me sitting there for the entire time but never asked what I was getting. I got up, expressed my displeasure to the owner, told him I had paid for my meal in advance. He offered to refund my money. That probably would have taken another 20 minutes, so I tipped the waitress and walked out. They are an organizational disaster. This is the first restaurant review I have ever written. I studied Restaurant and Hotel Management in college but do not work in the business. I try to give people who do a break. Well we struck out again in search of another place that had since gone out of business. The Brown Cow is no longer in Palmer, so starved we entered the Day&Night. Place we mildly busy, most seemed to be regular customers. Counter help was annoying at best. Our waitress seemed to be a lifer, but moved pretty slow. We did enjoy three cups of average coffee a piece, that was only because it took forever to get our food. Polish omelet failed due to lack of kielbasa, so I went for a hash omelet. Not homemade hash, but a decent meal outside of the burnt toast. Brother ordered a "spinach" omelet, he was delivered a "spanish" omelet. He was cool with that since it had taken about 20 minutes for breakfast to come. Lady ordered a short stack of blueberry pancakes and bacon. Pretty solid breakfast on her part. The atmosphere in the car was to be expected from the exterior. A greasy spoon type place. Unless you lived in Palmer don't expect anything special. read more

I really don't know why people are so critical of this place. Its great food at great prices. The coffee is really good too, which you hardly see at a restaurant. Staff is friendly and the atmosphere is homey. If your looking for an IHOP, Dennys or Golden Corral - your going to be disappointed. Do not get scared away by the tougher looking exterior. A group of friends and I were on our way to six flags when we rolled into town for something to eat. We figured the diner was our best, cheapest option. Let me tell you- best part of the trip. Us three teenagers showed up and were greeted with the warmest welcome we've ever received. The staff was delightful and constantly joking around. The food was fantastic; honestly the best grilled cheese with ham, fries, and milkshake I've had in a long time! This place is straight out of the 1950's, built out of a trailer with the counter top seating and a chef who seems happy to see every one of his regulars. However, that's where the positives end. There were spiders in the restaurant dropping on to our table. Friends of the chef were receiving their orders before we did even though they arrived afterwards. The waitress waited 5 minutes to ask if we would like water, took another 5 to deliver it and take our order. I ordered the special, eggs,toast, homefries, and juice. It took over an hour for the food to show up, with the waitress stopping by every 15 minutes with a half hearted sorry. Keep in mind there were only 5-6 booths total in the whole place. When our order actually appeared, I gave my card immediately so we could pay and leave. We finished our food before she returned with the bill. This is one of my usual stops on my way across the state to visit my parents in upstate NY. They have kielbasa and eggs on the menu, which is good enough for me: and it's cheap. The counter might be a little sticky and the coffee isn't the greatest, but it's a diner. The waitresses definitely prefer to wait on the locals, but they'll get to you eventually. I really like diner food. So when I heard the Day & Night Diner was serving a "Prime Rib special" I decided to give it a try. I ordered a take-out meal, and when I got home I opened the styrofoam container, I saw a small piece of prime rib swimming in mashed potatoes and covered in gravy. (You don't cover prime rib with anything, let alone gravy. And to top it all off, I asked for fries) But besides that, the price of this "special" cost me $16.95!! Can you believe that--for a "special"! I feel bad for Mom and Pop businesses, but from diners I remember getting "quality, quantity, and price". read more

So, here's the thing about Day & Night; When the owners (Carl and his wife) are there, the food is on point. But when the girls are there, it's horrendous. They lack serious customer service professionalism and are just plain not nice. I get that its Palmer but step it up a bit ladies. Other than that, I like the ole fashioned milkshakes that they serve in the metal mixing cup is retro and awesome (Vanilla is my favorite!) Their Haddock specials are pretty good too! read more

Stopped in here with my mom about a week ago. The atmosphere is great being located in a 1920's rail car style diner cart. The food was ok too. Nothing great but edible and priced right. The reason that we won't be going back is due to the crowd eating there. We were made to feel very,VERY uncomfotable by the regulars who seemed to be staring us down from all directions. Seems that if you don't eat here a whole lot they're not going to be really happy with your presence at their chow house. To all the ppl who gave a poor review- this is a trailer serving food! It's not promising fast service, shiny counters, or pristine bathrooms! It's a diner! In a trailer! You'll enjoy the best Day & Night has to offer by standing outside and taking a gander at its authentic, New England roadside diner exterior. On the inside it's strictly amateur hour. Home fries are cooked to order, but if you don't already know this the waitress isn't about to bother letting you in on the secret. As a result, ordering home-fries nets you plain baked potato cubes, no spice, no onions, nada. The eggs were semi-raw (even by the standards of sunny-side up eggs). It's hard to figure out if they f'd up my food on purpose or this is their standard operating procedure because I heard several locals sending dishes back for corrections. While I did nothing but read my paper and eat my breakfast, the waitress behaved like a nasty little cur. On an inexpensive breakfast I normally adjust the tip upwards. After the shenanigans at this joint I was sorely tempted to leave a strict 15% on the pre-tax total.
