    Very undercooked home fries

Not a great breakfast. Ordered an omelette and was surprised how small it was. Both my wife's home fries and mine were very undercooked. Almost raw. Bacon was also very undercooked. Really not edible. Though, our waitress did bring another order of bacon that was at least cooked. There are just too many other spots in that area that are do much better. And better portions.

    Excellent CBH patty. Generous amount

When the March / April edition of Yankee Magazine rated Johnny's Roadside Diner one of the 20 best diners in New England, it was only a matter of time. The time came today when friend, Demanding Dan, and I made the trip to Hadley Mass. Located in a commercial mall type area, this standalone diner has that classic retro look and feel. Plenty of stainless steel and red neon lighting. Also plenty of parking. HOWEVER, why were there so few vehicles in the lot at 8:40 AM? Upon entering, more of the same. There was nary a fanny on any stool, or a youth (or older person) at any booth to the right of the entrance. And only a smattering of people in the larger room to the left. Peggy was our server. She was excellent. Brought menus and beveraged us. DD water, me coffee. Dan ordered the Carnivore omelet (sans ham) w HFs and rye toast. I chose the corned beef hash w eggs over med, HFs and sour dough toast. Food came in a reasonable amount of time. DD thought his omelet was very good. We both thought that the HFs were not very hot, temp wise. I loved the CBH, which came as a patty and was a generous portion. Two things about the toast....why only one slice?? This was only the 2nd time in all the eateries I've patronized where you get only one slice. Second, notwithstanding the picture of the toast in my photo, the other side was untoasted. It was more like bread. I showed it to Peggy who agreed and offered to bring me another one (toasted). I declined as I didn't want to wait. Last, DD paid for breakfast (thanks). I looked at the pic of the bill when I started this review. $3.25 for a cup of coffee is on the high side. We were charged for two cups (per above, Dan had water). I did not get a refill, just a top off. DD rated JRD a "4". I rated them a "3". Scenery is great, service excellent, hash awesome. Too many negative things offset the good parts. For me, too many other excellent diners in New Englang (almost all of which I've been to).

We used to go here many times before Covid and everything was wonderful. Never a problem. Till this time. Just wanna point out of the service this time. Like always was exceptional the girl see us right away. Her name was Patty she said us a nice booth. We told her it was our Son 40th birthday and that we want to take him out to lunch. They thought that was wonderful. Adverse they seem to be in a hurry even though the dying was very empty from it was like like 1130 I think in the morning on Monday it was very quiet. It was only a couple of the tables with people in them it seems strange to go in a weekday and find them like empty.we eventually ordered our food. My husband got a burger and my son, the birthday boy he got a cream soda float and then he also got a loaded tater tots and he ordered these with the I believe it was a rodeo type cheeseburger with barbecue sauce, lettuce tomato, and onion rings. I myself ordered the donut holes with the homemade caramel sauce, and I have been looking forward to having the cornbread waffle it was supposed to come with fresh fruit however, they were all out of the fruit. They just had strawberries so then we asked to have bananas as well need to put bananas on it, so we get fresh strawberries and bananas, whipped cream. The food came out however, my husband's was supposed to be medium it was more well done and the french fries weren't hot and then my son got loaded to but she brought his burger out first told him a couple extra minutes and he's OK but she came back a second time is it Wfp so sorry we forgot to take them out from the broiler and they all burnt so we're gonna make so he was like no no I'll take them so he said eat them but then she brought out a second bowl of lines that were nicely done the actually perfect. My cornbread waffle wasn't bad but like I said it didn't have the fruit it was supposed to. I also ordered his sided bag and softly cooked. The bacon was so hard I couldn't eat it. My son ended up eating instead because I have braces and he does not. I felt some of the prices were quite a bit higher than the expect them to be. I was very disappointed in the meal I did not feel it was worth the price that I paid which was around $66 for the three of us plus the tip. The wages was worth the tip but the mail was not worth the price I felt bad because it was never like that before. Everything was always fresh delicious right on top of things. I'd rather sit and wait to get seated then to get seated in a restaurant that just their food standards were up to what they should've been or what we were used to for that restaurant.. even though our son lives but a mile and a half from this restaurant, probably be wild before I go back again. I think they need to have more practice and what they're doing just didn't feel like their heart was in the food.

Great ambiance, nice big booths throughout. Very 50's dinerish inside and out. Many awesome options to choose from both breakfast and lunch. They have a really cool page in the menu of alcoholic milkshakes and other fun drinks that are infused with alcohol as well. I had the chicken salad and smothered tots. It was all fresh ingredients in the salad and it was delicious and the tots...amazing! Must try the tots if you go.

Service was great. Seated almost immediately. Food came out very fast and was good. Great deal.

    I'm Poor

My wife and I decided to take my mother out for brunch before heading to the Three County Fair. Having been here before, we knew we would get a good variety of options. It did not disappoint. It was move in weekend for the local colleges and we were expecting to wait for a table. Luckily we came at the right time and were seated immediately. The place was pretty full and more people were trickling in after us. By the time we left, there were several groups waiting for a table. Our server, Grace, promptly came to the table and set us up with coffee. After taking our orders, we waited a short time for the food. My wife ordered the "I'm Poor", my mom ordered the "Hash Plate", and I ordered the "Hash Bennie". My wife was very pleased with her dish. The eggs were perfectly over easy, the home fries (homies) were nicely browned, and the toast was nice and toasted on the outside but still soft on the inside. Good texture contrast. The star was the ham. Smokey, savory, and delicious. She ate everything. My mom loved the Hash Plate. The eggs, once again, perfectly over easy, and the toast was toasty and soft. She hadn't had hash in a while and was very pleased with it. She wasn't a fan of the homies but that was her personal preference. My Hash Benedict was great. The eggs were poached perfectly. Gooey on the inside and nice and tender. The hollandaise was creamy and rich. English muffins were toasted perfectly to make a perfect foundation for this dish. The star of the show was the hash. It is homemade corned beef. It was nice and tender with a great crisp on it. Very hearty and a very ample portion. I destroyed that thing and would have eaten more if I had another stomach. The place was very clean. Tables were bussed frequently. No crumby or grimy floor. Decor was quaint and understated. The bathrooms were very clean. Service was great and well paced. Grace was pleasant and polite. Checked in a few times but never overbearing. She was also very prompt with any requests we had (water, refills, check, etc...). Price wise, I thought they were fair. For the proportions, I found it to be quite reasonable. I saw another review that mentioned the coffee price. It didn't seem out of place for me. I would rather pay what I paid for it here than at one of the national chains. It was a good, strong cup of Joe that you expect at a diner. This was an excellent experience. We have not been let down on any of our visits here. Great atmosphere, great service, and delicious food. Can't recommend it any higher.

Had a great experience at Johnny's. The wait wasn't very long for a holiday, and the service was great. I ordered the "Dads Paying" which was more than enough food for one person and all of it was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the menu is very expansive, definitely will return!

Animated and action packed Update-…read more Previously I focused on the coffee, most would in a cafe, but today, I was thinking of the baked goods, I usually keep things low carb, but since I was here I decided to make today my treat day. I had returned to the area for some shopping and decided to stop by the cafe, but alas, I was too late ! I had reminisced on the delicious cookies but it was not to be. My memory returned to my first visit.. As I stepped into the warm and inviting cafe, the sweet aroma of coffee and freshly baked goods wafts through the air, tickling the nose and captivating the taste buds. One can't help but feel anticipation and search for the source of this wondrous scent, the eyes dart to a display of baked goods brimming with life and love declaring forth their delightsome quality to the nostrils. Each bite of these heavenly treats is like a symphony of flavors exploding in your mouth. The cookies are perfectly soft and chewy, with just the right amount of sweetness, and melt in your mouth like butter. You can taste the high-quality ingredients in every bite, and it's clear that the bakers here take pride in crafting each and every cookie with care and precision. But it's not just the cookies that impress. As one peruses the display case, the eyes catch sight of the cinnamon-buns , many more treats, and even pretzels - twisted and golden-brown, with a sprinkling of salt that glistens in the light. I don't even typically enjoy pretzels, but these were too good to ignore. I take a bite, and it's like no pretzel experienced before. The outside is perfectly crispy, giving way to a warm and fluffy interior. The salt balances out the flavors, you can't help but be amazed at how something so simple can taste so incredible. As i leave the cafe, my senses still buzzing with the delicious flavors and scents. Everything in this cafe is highly recommended, and some of the best baked goods in the area. But today it was not to be, I went to a nearby franchise shop which specializes in cookies... nice staff but .. meh If your in the area and want a cookie this is the place I recommend, take caution though, it could ruin the experience of cookies anywhere else!

I'll start off by saying that the staff was very nice. I told them it was our first time there and she sat us down, told us to look over the menu and then order at the counter when we were ready. We ended up sharing the breakfast monster crepe and also the eat your greens salad. I can honestly tell you that the eat your greens salad was one of the best salads I've had. its so simple but so delicious and packed full of flavor. The lettuce leaves were extremely fresh, and the dressing was homemade. The crepe was also good, not the best I've had but it was good. Honestly the winer for me was that salad. We also ordered some hot drinks and I was surprised to find that they have organic coffee, really good. and their honey is legit, not the fake stuff. I know some of the other reviews were complaining about the pricing on things but its obviously better quality as well. You can taste it for sure. I will say that the one thing I didn't like was the fact that the tables/chairs are so close together. We were sandwiched in between two families with children and it was really hard to relax. We had to listen to one family complain about not having gotten their crepe yet even though everyone else had gotten their food. I felt that if I even inched either to my right or left I would hit the person sitting on the other end. They need to configure the seating better. Otherwise, it's a great place, I'd definitely come back and maybe sit at a counter or a booth if I'm lucky.

Before the menu change, I ordered a vegan tofu reuben with their delicious slaw, called a "Cosmos."…read more It was so good, I ordered it again, thinking it was impossible for them to get it right two times in a row. They did. So I came back a THIRD time and ordered it AGAIN, just to see if they can still keep their vegan cheese melted just right on top. It was incredible, AGAIN. Now that I've gotten this out of the way, ask where it is on their new menu as it is under revision--I don't like the tempeh version as much. Onto the rest of the atmosphere of Cushman. One of the most pleasant features of Cushman Market and Cafe is that it is nestled at an important corner in northeast Amherst. You need to travel further west to get to The Mill District and not much opens there early, and there's little else I can recall in the other cardinal directions. It's a pleasant trip, with plenty of parking in front, behind, and in a strip of side road across the street. I've never been in the market, so let me keep talking about the Cafe. The atmosphere of the Cafe is wonderful, with locals, safety officers, and regulars all visiting at each meal hour from breakfast to lunch. Nestled inside what looks like an old barn, complete with doors still hanging, Cushman has memorabilia from decades of music, sports, politics, and news frozen under acrylic, different for many of their tables. The café seems to have at most 20 chairs, and the staff behind the counter will deliver it to your table, call your name, or leave other orders by a stand near the back entrance. Cushman Cafe offers a variety of meals, alongside baked goods and freshly mixed café drinks. While I'm not a fan of the switcherels, I have enjoyed their dirty Chai lattes, iced teas, fresh coffees, and free water if I recall in a pinch. They have gender neutral bathrooms--which is great if you're tired of waiting in line for one of two as they are large but single occupancy. They offer cold panini sandwiches, hot panini, all sorts of eggs, egg sandwiches, and egg breakfasts, vegan and vegetarian options, alongside a seemingly visible carnivorous focus for their new menu's default. If you had a chance to hop on a bus and travel around Amherst, or you were passing through to the highways, Cushman Cafe is worth a quick stop. I've rarely had to wait long for my meals even in busy hours, and this is because of the large and competent kitchen, who--if you'll remember--can get a delicious sandwich right any day of the week. I hope cell service returns there!
