I mean, how many people really know what to do at that terribly emotional and shocking time? Utter McKinley in The Valley (Mission Hills, to be exact) had provided services for previous relatives, but that was quite a while ago. So, I called them. Besides getting a general price quote, I was told that, day or night, just give 'em a call and they'd pick up the body.
Early last month, Mom passed away at a skilled nursing facility, just 2 days prior to her 90th birthday. When my Sister called me with the news, before I headed to the site, I found my UM notes. It was evening, but I called their number anyway, and a gentleman answered! He was on-call at a sister mortuary, but said he'd coordinate sending 2 Utter McKinley representatives to come for her. Sure enough, in a bit over an hour, the fellows arrived (they were in Pasadena at the time) and took Mom back to the mortuary.
In a matter of days, we met with Erick--one of the amazing Arrangements Counselors at UM. From the moment my Sister and I sat down with him, he was compassionate, professional, and kind. He made great suggestions, and helped us make decisions (there were a lot of them); and, at no time pressured us into a particular purchase.
Last week, we had her funeral. When I told him my buddy put together a Celebration of Life video tribute, he said to email it to him. He burned a DVD, and we played it after the eulogy and other speeches. Such a kind offer, and the family/guests loved it. Once everything concluded, Erick accompanied the hearse and family to the cemetery.
Oh, an additional shoutout to Kayla--also one of the Utter McKinley Arrangements Counselors. She did Mom's makeup, and her artistry was amazing. Many guests commented on how natural and at peace Mom looked.
A historical note: The mortuary has been serving families at the Mission Hills location (corner of San Fernando Mission Boulevard and Columbus Avenue, across from the San Fernando Mission Hills Cemetery) since 1962! Prior to that, UM was located on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood from the mid-30s through the 50s. My point is, this mortuary has been around for nearly 100 years. They do things right. When you lose a loved one, put your trust in Utter McKinley.
