The rice and meat came in separate containers, and I was surprised that there were no vegetables included with the food. The rice was delicious; it was callaloo rice. The oxtails were okay - they were tender but could have used more seasoning. However, after eating, I started experiencing stomach pain, but I didn't think much of it since it was my first meal of the day at 2 pm. I had some leftovers, so I ate another serving around 8 pm. Unfortunately, my stomach started hurting even more, and by 11 pm, I was very sick. For several hours, I felt like I was in a nightmare. I normally don't give three stars but this one disappointed me. Let's start off with the service , they are small staffed. The girls don't really know their own menu so be ware of up charges. The ambiance was nicely put together but enough about that. The food which we ordered was oxtail and rice ($27), Two Escovich fish orders - one festival for each fish ($40 both), One Jerk Fish- no side($20), Side if Mac & Cheese ($5), & two drinks ($6 both). About $98 for this. Hoping it was worth it , it wasn't . The oxtails came in a small Chinese soup container, which was clearly not worth almost $30, and the rice was in another same small container. Mostly bones and not much meat non the less (figured). The jerk fish didn't have any real seasoning besides the walker woods jerk seasoning (any real Jamaican can spot that off one taste), so I was not pleased with having to wait 20+ minutes for it when the cashier told me 15. The Escovich fish was basic, and again, there was no real seasoning on it just a lot of pickles (carrots, onion, &vinegar). I also ordered a side of plantains, which are apparently their number one item--they're really great, with extra jerk sauce on the side for just 50 cents. Additionally, I got macaroni and cheese and the rotini salad. The total for my meal came to about $30, which was enough to feed two of us, me and friend, and we were both very satisfied. The delivery was relatively fast, and everything was handled with care--nothing was spilled or mishandled. I'm officially obsessed with the escovitz fish here. It's soooo good. The shrimp wrap was tasty and my picky parents had no complaints surprisingly. They also enjoyed their fish sandwich. I ordered a side of pasta and it wasn't good. I'm normally into creamy things but this lacked flavor. Ended up throwing it away after 2 bites. The steam veggies consist of just cabbage and some carrots and peas. I was disappointed by that. The jerk chicken is moist and when you add the jerk sauce it takes it up a notch. When the order came it was missing the 2 sides and the 2 drinks. I have been contemplating on writing this review for some time now but today took the cake and my strong believe is if you see something happening and you choose not to say something, you can actually perpetuate the behavior. Every single one of the female staff that works there is absolutely rude and have no customer service not to mention always have a sore face. When I received my order I checked the bag to ensure everything was in the bag that I order because previously 2x my order was missing items. The gravy was missing.. This is how it went. Me: Excuse me, the gravy is missing. Cashier: If there is no gravy in the bag that means we don't have any. Me: Ok so how am I as a customer suppose to know that. May I please have another type of gravy to eat with the white rice. Cashier: Looked at me and turned her back and proceed with the next customer. The kind older woman, obviously know and see her unprofessional behavior got up and dished out my container of the exact gray I originally ordered and brought it to me. My response to her was, you need to teach the rest of them what customer service looks and sound like. I thanked her and left. I completely understand that dealing with the public at times can be frustrating but when you accept to take a job that has to interact with the public it's extremly imperative that you understand what customer service means. The jerk chicken and jerk fish were ok, nothing that really stood out from any other similar spot. The lentil n chicken soup also just ok, bit too sweet for my taste (due to abundance of carrots). And one big piece of cassava floating around was bit too hard and could've been cooked longer. The chicken pieces I didn't try yet, but I'm sure it was just as all the other things. I'm really conflicted about this place. On the one hand, the food here is good, especially the jerk chicken. On the other hand, they really need to work on their customer service skills. I'm not saying I need my ass kissed when I come here but if I order $300+ in food and ask for a hand to take the food out the door to my car, I don't think I'm being unreasonable. Asking them to double check the bags to make sure all utensils are included (because of previous instances of forgetfulness on their part) is also a valid request; even if they think it isn't. But it's not all bad. Like I said, the food is good, and that's what its mostly about. I love the jerk, the oxtail and the escovitch fish. Portions are decent and the prices are reasonable. Everything was ok. I was a little skeptical at first because it seemed like across both Google and yelp that portion size and high pricing was an issue. I've been trying to cut back on the amount of money that I spend on food delivery so my most recent compromise has been ordering from places that are offering deals on Uber eats or DoorDash. Because I was unsure, I decided to just let my best friend choose for me and she chose this lovely establishment. They have been offering a save on select items deal which basically just cuts certain menu items down in price. The options were a jerk chicken, curry chicken or goat, stew chicken, and oxtail. Immediately right off the bat, oxtail was not an option. Usually it's because I like to see my oxtail in person but in this case it's also because their prices are high. It seems very clear from reviews, as well as the menu and their presentation that the vibe they're going for is more of a fast food Jamaican restaurant, so it's pretty surprising to see that their prices are equal to or higher in most cases than their "non fast food" counterparts for smaller portions. Because of this, I went with stew chicken and rice and peas. The meal came with a drink which was cool. The deal cost $10 and normally it wouldve been $13. Now here's where I was a little disappointed.. I wasn't too mad at the portion size. Both the meat and rice came in the 16oz plastic containers you usually see for soup. At first glance, I could understand why someone would feel jipped because it's not usually how Jamaican food is packed. However, I feel like it probably would've fed two people. The major issue was the meat being super bland and the pieces they sent being mainly bone. It did not taste like the stew chicken I'm used to, that hint of sweetness you usually get from the chicken being browned in sugar was missing. All I could taste was a very slight undertone of curry and that was it. I think my favorite part of the meal was the festival they sent. I don't really know if I would try them again.. I feel like you can get way better tasting Jamaican food for the same price or lower at other places. First stop in NY for our trip and we landed at De Islands. Our stay was in Canarsie, so our first food venture wound up being somewhere close. We stumbled upon De Islands and figured Caribbean food would hit the spot....and boy was that true. It was our first time having Jerk chicken and they give us a great portion. In addition, the meal came with some delicious pumpkin rice that was very unique and complimented the meat well. Lastly, were the Kassava fries, which were pretty tasty on their own, but the special BBQ sauce they had really elevated everything. Some of the best, flavorful sauce I have ever had. The meal was filling and worth the $10-12, although the dining experience was lackluster. The seating wasn't available and the vibe inside seemed a little dead, but the workers were sweet and helped us navigate the menu. (Pictures included) They were covid compliant and I had no issue with their customer service like some eluded to in other reviews. Upon arriving, I second guessed my choice to not order ahead of time; noticing the many takeout orders waiting to be picked up. Not to mention the many customers coming in and out to grab them.
