I like that Edwin spends a bit of extra time giving detailed explanations and answering questions, explaining WHY you do or don't do something and not just how to do it. He's great at breaking down complex movements into digestible pieces and suggesting tweaks to improve your technique. He tailors advice for every student depending on many things - different body types, personal goals, current injuries, whatever you can think of. I feel like I have made quicker progress at this gym compared to other places because of this. It's a small gym at this point in time; a lot of the classes feel almost like private sessions. It's a hidden gem! Definitely drop by if you're in the area, whether you've been doing bjj your whole life or if you're interested in trying out for the first time! I felt comfortable to roll during the trial class as a small woman. The people at The Grappling Lab make sure all students feel safe. Also offers best pricing in the area :)

I trained with Edwin for more than a year, and 100% still would be if I lived in the area. Before starting, I watched a little UFC, and had heard of BJJ but I had zero experience in practicing combat sports, and really didn't have a clue what BJJ was. Now I'm all in, two comps deep, and am eager to train whenever I can - I really don't think that would be the case if Edwin's classes weren't so engaging, and if the environment wasn't so welcoming (even the other students go out of their way to help make their training partner better each session). Coach Edwin concentrates on the fundamentals and builds a foundation for his students, no matter what level they are. It's apparent that he has experience teaching, and uses that to his advantage when coaching. He understands the fine details of each technique that he's teaching, and can explain how you can improve in any given position by applying small adjustments to your game. When he starts explaining a guard, movement, take-down, submission, etc., the entire class is dialed into whatever he's saying. He's not one of those guys who will scoff at you for asking a question, or look down on you for not knowing something. He actually encourages you to ask questions, especially if you are a white belt. If you're considering starting BJJ or if you're looking for a new place to train, I would highly recommend the Grappling Lab. Your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, confidence, and cardio will thank you!

The owners, professors, and coaches have cultivated a superb gym culture. This gym is safe, friendly, and supportive. The facility is modern and clean, and they've invested in a foam block subfloor beneath the mats for softer landings. As far as I know, this is the only gym in the area that offers women-only classes four times per week and a bi-monthly community open mat for gentlemen 40 years and older. My kids train here after school 4-5 days a week, and they love it. The kids' professors and coaches are experienced and amazing teachers. I'm especially thankful for the young coaches who were so patient and kind to my boys when they were hesitant and shy after first starting. And my pocketbook is especially thankful for the discounted rates for additional family members. If you're looking for a place where the whole family can train, grow, and feel welcome, I can't recommend Teragi highly enough.

I've been to places where it seemed salesy or lacking authenticity. Teragi Academy is a place where they genuinely practice and instill jiu jitsu and its culture of honor and regard of others. The promotion of belts is carried out quarterly and only awarded based on merit. This is also something I greatly appreciate because I know many establishments that give out promotions for no reason at all. Since day one, the professors and coaches of this gym have been patient and meticulous in teaching techniques to the kids. Teragi has been instrumental in providing confidence as well as self awareness for my son. I've seen many of the other kids mature in their own ways for the past 2 years. It's always a wonder to see everyone come up together. For myself and my family, we seen so much growth and discipline in our boy. There's a comfort in knowing that our child is not left helpless and able to stand up himself as well as for others. I've been watching in the sidelines, two to three times a week, for the last 2 years. This is a program that provides a worthwhile experience. The benefit and journey is well worth the investment for anyone, young or old.

I love seeing the kids getting stronger and learning discipline while they train! I didn't really know a lot about jiu jitsu before coming here! I walked in not even knowing what color comes after a white belt, and although I'm still so new, I'm excited to see how far I'll go! I really appreciate the gym offering a 2 week trail period for anyone (like me) who is new and just exploring their interest! Knowing I'm not alone is a huge factor that keeps me coming back (unlike my 24 membership-- a traditional gym was overwhelming for a beginner like me). I didn't realize the power of learning from those that have gone before you & ASKING QUESTIONS to truly understand why, as opposed to just going through some motions to burn calories. I love being connected to the coaches and other members! The coaches genuinely care about their members' improvement! What ultimately attracted me was understanding it's not just a workout but a mindset! You simultaneously strengthen your physical health as well as your mental capacity and toughness! Getting out of your comfort zone and trying anything new will always be challenging and strange at first but starting where you're at and staying consistent are the keys to success (in jiu jitsu yes but also every area of life you want to grow in! Small choices every day add up to make you an "overnight" champion!) Overall, I found much more than a good workout; this is a holistic approach to lifestyle wellness. I realized I've got nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving it a shot-- who knows, you might surprise yourself and learn something new!
