I've heard about De Nada since before we moved to Austin, and I finally understand why. After the first bite, my husband said if we lived closer to De Nada, it'd be a problem because we'd be here all the time. Tonight we ordered: Mexican Quesadilla - Birria and Cheese Crunchy Tacos - Beef Queso and Chips Barbacoa Taco Frozen Hot Chocolate Margarita Each day they have specials, so be sure to ask them about them even though they consistently mention them right when you sit down! Service is FAST. Lightning fast. I barely took another full sip of margarita before getting our next plate of food! Frozen hot chocolate margarita isn't too sweet at all; it is a great boozy/sweet combination, and when you are limited to 2, it better be good! And wow! Those margaritas ARE GOOD! Strong but delicious! Kiddo loved the crunchy tacos so much we had to get another order so we could have a bite! Simple and yummy, perfectly filling, and great for $4 for 2! The queso was also super delicious, and I loved how even though the chips were thinner, they didn't break easily, and they were so good with that queso! Salty and not heavy at all! I'm not sure if I've heard so much about De Nada that I had too high expectations or if it was just the experience on the whole, but I would say this was just an OK spot in my book. The parking is essentially non-existent and while there is a street behind it to park on, make sure you have a flashlight or your phone to see your way to / from the restaurant and your car. I made a reservation, which is highly encouraged - but they will hold you firm to your table time limit (even when there is no one waiting to be seated at it). There is a large air conditioner in one corner and it appeared to be leaking fluid as the floor around me was very wet (and more so after my meal than before it started). The queso was just OK in my book - I've had better, but I've also for sure had worse. I ordered the birria quesadilla, which presents more as an empanada (and yes, I know it's the traditional Mexican street vendor way) and was encouraged that I'd want more to eat. I went for the two crispy tacos, which were described as mini street tacos (so I was imagining together they would be the size of one) - but they were standard Old El Paso sized taco shells, so I certainly had more food than I had bargained for - and the tacos were nothing special. The quesadilla was good, but again, not great. The margaritas are supposedly "the" thing here - and I guess maybe the frozen ones are stronger and more unique than the non-frozen ones. When book club lands on st paddys, the girls met up at de nada. We got mango frozen margs to start and they were strong but delicious. We got on the waitlist for a table and we waited about 1.5 hours, there are outdoor tables you can sit at while you wait for your table. I was skeptical of the food because places with good margs rarely have good texmex food. Maybe i was starving and alittle tipsy or the food is actually good but i munched everything down. I've been to De Nada a few times and always enjoyed it, so this experience was honestly really disappointing. We came in with a group of about 15, and from the moment we sat down, our server was immediately aggressive. Before we could even get settled, he was loudly telling us not to switch seats and speaking to us in a way that felt more like we were being scolded than welcomed. Throughout the night, multiple people in our group noticed that anytime someone moved or asked a question, he made sarcastic or rude comments under his breath. It created a really uncomfortable vibe for what was supposed to be a fun night. The food itself was fine, chips, queso, quac, and tacos were solid, but the service completely overshadowed it. What made things worse was the lack of transparency around gratuity. When I asked, I was told auto-gratuity was 15%, but it was actually 20% on the bill. I even added extra on top of that at the time, which I regret given the experience. And to top it the bathroom situation is a mess. There are only two toilets, and there was easily a 15 person line. We were forced to stand awkwardly next to dining tables while waiting, and other guests were getting annoyed at us for standing there... but there was literally nowhere else to go. Not ideal when you just want to enjoy your night. Food and drinks came quick which I very much so appreciate. I completely understand that large parties can be hard to manage, and we were doing our best to be respectful and cooperative. But there's a big difference between setting expectations and being outright rude. I've had good experiences here before, which is why this was so surprising. I really hope management addresses both the service and the overall guest experience, because no one should feel talked down to or stressed out just trying to find a bathroom. read more

Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had a reservation for 10 people on a Friday at 7:45 and were seated immediately at a big table outside. The host told us there was a strict 2-hr limit for tables and that we would need to leave by 9:45. The table itself was clean, but the chairs were really rusty and dirty. I was wearing white pants, so I had to carefully select my chair for fear of it literally staining my pants. Service was also pretty slow, and it was a bit difficult to flag down our server when we were ready to order or needed anything. The food itself was ok, nothing out of this world. I ordered 2 tacos, which was the perfect amount, and ate some chips and salsa which we ordered for the table ($9 btw). As far as Mexican food goes in Austin, there's definitely better in town! Parking was hard to come by as the lot was full. We ended up parking on the side of the road outside of the restaurant. At the end of the day, it was a good place for groups, and I liked that they were accommodating to dietary needs (we had vegetarians and peanut allergies in our group). I came on a 5:30 on Saturday and was shocked at how busy it was - there wasn't a long line to be seated though. They had an all day happy hour which I'm always down for. I started with the carnitas and cheese quesadilla, which honestly felt more like a empanada than a quesadillas. It was piping hot but the carnitas didn't have much flavor, and wish there was a bit more cheese. The beef tacos reminded me of a fancier version of Taco Bell, but it was just alright. We got the frozen ones and they were tasty and did what they needed to do. I paid for a margarita, was served the drink, and then was hunted down at my table by staff accusing me of using a fake ID. I am very much 21 and showed my valid government-issued ID, yet they brought over multiple employees to scrutinize it until finally admitting they had "messed up." Despite acknowledging their mistake, they still took my drink away, refused to refund me, and instead offered store credit I will never use. This experience was humiliating, dishonest, and completely unacceptable. Taking someone's money, admitting fault, and still refusing to deliver the product or issue a refund is theft disguised as customer service. To be fair, this place is great for people watching when you're drinking, especially the amount of Waymos that get stuck after dropping off patrons.
