We recently moved back to the area and visited dead fish grill. I was so looking forward to the atmosphere and having a couple of drinks and maybe an appetizer. I was so disappointed in the food which seem to be frozen and was presented horribly. it didn't even look appetizing. The drinks were ridiculously expensive, which I would be OK with if the service were better and the food was decent,. not going to waste my time going again! Normally I cook Thanksgiving dinner, but this year we decided to dine out. Dead Fish put together an excellent all inclusive meal. Ham, turkey and all the trimmings. Dessert was also included in the cost. Portions were huge! Each plate could have easily fed two people. We all had leftovers. When you dine there ask for Whitney, guaranteed he will make your dining experience memorable. He is so upbeat, friendly and welcoming. He is also very attentive without being intrusive. How in the world does this place have only 3 stars?!? It's absolutely amazing! We went on a whim and arrived as the sun was setting over the lake. The view was spectacular! Our server was very knowledgeable about products and helped me decide what I wanted. We started with the catfish bites and we were blown away!! Perfect crispy outside and the freshest fish inside. Not even a little bit of a sign of disappointment. I immediately wished I had gotten the catfish plate. And I still wish I had gotten some to go. For me entrée I chose the shrimp and grits. I have never had more perfectly cooked shrimp! And these were HUGE! From start to finish our experience was perfect and although it's a bit of a drive for us, I can not wait to go back!! read more

We've had both the dinner and brunch in the recent past, and while the dinner service can be a bit hit or miss, the brunch is ALWAYS a huge hit!! The staff are the true rockstars of this place, even more than the beautiful view of Belton Lake. The majority of the problems do seem to be mismanagement, but the FoH work their tails off to cover as much as they can. I'd like to give a particular shoutout to Whitney, a server who goes above and beyond in all measures, and makes you feel right at home (at least with us, as fellow New Englanders lol) The chicken and waffles and shrimp skewers are always worth the price, but skip the coleslaw. read more

When I picked up the taco to take a bite it literally fell apart as it poured out what looked like water. It's such a nice setting. Great to see the lake and even has great views of the lake and sunset from the inside. Ordered a signature Mojito and it was very sour and not made with fresh limes as most places do. No garnish or anything just a beer glass. My friend ordered some other pineapple signature drink and had no flavor of anything and again just served boring. I ordered the grilled flounder on rice with seasonal veggies. Flounder was plain and the veggies were the over cook frozen ones. Was pretty nasty to look at on the plate. I did everything I could to get some flavor; salt, pepper, hot sauce, tartar sauce. The calamari here is usually very good but this time it was soggy and just all round pieces. For such a nice place with premium prices I expected better. They need a new chef and a mixologist. I highly recommend requesting a table with prime view of the lake, a reservation may be smart. We loved our first of many future visits to this great place with an awesome view. The chicken fried steak was made from scratch and tasted great, the gravy was on point, thick and full of flavor, the grilled veggies and mashed taters were just as good. My wife had a great mixed green side salad with an amazing bacon vinaigrette...they had me at bacon....and butterflied fried shrimp with grilled veggies and cole slaw and fries.....very crisp on the outside and soft on the innards....the fries. Went there and ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich. What they served was not a Monte Cristo. It was not battered and deep fried. It was just a ham & cheese sandwich with an egg. It also did not come with jam, compote, or any sort of jelly. When I asked about that, they brought me a bowl of fruit. The impression that I got is that they have no clue what a Monte Cristo is even though the menu says that it is a classic Monte Cristo. read more

Went there over the weekend to spend a few hundred dollars with a couple of us and walked in. A tall blonde lady seemed to look a bit down on us that seemed to have a bit too much makeup on for the evening and asked did we make reservations. We said no, but there was ample seats around the bar and that was the perfect spot to start too begin spending some money. We were told about an hour and twenty minutes before a table, perfect. She says, yeah well you all cannot go sit at the bar... Clearly open seating at the time, so we said okay... Then as we're walking out she goes enjoy long John silvers... Very odd responses and truly felt judged due to our skin color. I guess it is what it is though, but don't feel that'll be a spot to spend money at Even though new house just bought a few minutes away. Our waiter said he had been there about a week - he was great but so overworked as he seemed to be tending to about 10-15 tables. Update: We went for brunch last weekend and the food quality was no different than dinner service. The "sausage gravy" I got on the side of my meal for my biscuit contained zero sausage. Just paste and pepper. My steak omelette had exactly 3 cubes of steak. My wife ordered the crab cakes Benedict expecting the same crab cakes served with dinner and they were smashed very thin and one egg poached hard and the other properly. We heard there was new management (once again), so, we figured we would stop in and support this local business (we can walk here from home). Place had a steady flow of patrons; but, far from packed. Sat at the bar and waited. Waited for about 10 minutes and no one acknowledged us. Plenty of staff milling about (one showing pictures off of a camera to one another). Not even eye contact from the bartender making drinks nearby. Very disappointed (once again) for the poor service. More specifically, the total lack of service. If it had been a sole employee hustling to get things done - kudos to him/her. However, lots of staff just ambling about. Sigh. Fingers crossed that something magical will happen here. Dead fish is stepping their game up, the food is getting more flavorful and they are improving their scenery. My only suggestion is to work on brunch prices, for a small omelet and salad is $14. That's a little high in my opinion. The price point for the American breakfast is on point and the Bloody Mary carafe and mimosa carafe is on point. Don't order individual ones during brunch if you plan on drinking more than one, that's expensive but the deal is worth it. I haven't been for dinner in a long time so I can't quote on that. But hopefully it is improving as well. You can't beat the lake view, I am just glad they are stepping their game up since they are one of the only spots with that view. Service has gotten better as well, seems like they got away from attitude staff to a more caring one. read more

Glad to discover this very cool venue for when we visit Salado at the Stagecoach Inn. We visited for brunch on a Saturday, sat at a table on the deck overlooking the lake and shared a crab cake eggs benne and a side of their cheese grits. Though the eggs Benedict came out pretty cold and the poached egg almost hard boiled, the flavors were very, very nice. If this had been served hot with a properly poached egg the dish would have been spectacular. And get this... the cheese grits with onions and peppers is delish. Having had yesterday at a breakfast cafe some of those all to common grits made by a cook who has no idea what is supposed to be done with grits and serves quick grits boiled in water with no salt, pepper or butter, etc. this offering at DFG was a very pleasant surprise. I am from out of town and every time we come visit our daughter this WAS our place to go. The food WAS always good as WAS the service. This time my wife, daughter and I ordered the staple of catfish. We ordered fried, grilled and blackened catfish. Mine was reasonably cooked but I also like raw sushi. The fried catfish was spot on the grilled catfish was terrible. It appeared they threw it on the grill and removed it promptly. We told the waiter after we could get his attention and he hurried off and wouldn't allow us to speak. He brought it back 15 minutes later for my wife. Need I remind you my daughter and I had finished up our meal. NO change in the catfish it was still bad. We still could get the male waiters attention UNTIL another 10 minutes and just asked for fried catfish. So I decided to go speak with the manager on duty. II went to the maitre and explained the situation as we never got to speak with a manager. After much discussion they did compensate if for 50% of the baked fish cost. I am generally very empathetic with wait staff and a restaurant so debated wether or not to leave the review as the majority of my foodie reviews across the US are favorable. However, hopefully this review will set in motion actions to improve this restaurant as it appears they are also adding on to expand seating capacity. I get sick every time I eat here (fifth time WASN'T a charm). I have no idea what it is about this place. The last time I ended up in the Emergency Department because I broke out in a body rash. There's something off with their water because every time I order a drink here, it tastes putrid. The food is not well-executed, nor is it ever served hot. Tepid, at best. The final visit was a celebration of a friend's wedding and it set me over the edge. Dirty silverware, seated by a filthy window (but great view), subpar food at an unreasonable price. The only thing this place has going for it is the full bar and the view. I'll avoid any unit functions that are held here and won't be returning. read more

This place has a beautiful Lake Belton view but the food and drink are alright. We ordered the mango and mojito cocktails during their happy hour (3-7 Tues-Fri) and they were refreshing, but extremely sweet. The flavor of our food was A-OK. The dead fish tacos were stacked high with lettuce and the toasted tortillas were a good touch. The tacos were a bit dry. They don't do substitutions for the rice and charged for a whole additional side when I asked for corn, but still excluded the rice from my plate. My boyfriend tried catfish for the first time with his catfish plate and it did not disappoint! He enjoyed it. A mere 2 hush puppies were served with it as one of the sides though. I asked for hot sauce and it was served in a grimy-feeling bottle; I like to believe they wipe it after each customer, but this is just a heads up for those that were hoping for single servings during COVID times. As everyone else said -- 5 star view. Service was attentive, but had to ask for dressing for the salads, salt, catsup, etc. A good waiter would check to be sure dressing comes out with the salad. Don't order Calamari -- it's just bad. Fried shrimp plate is good and big enough for two. Burgers were good. Salmon on the salad was undercooked, but better than being overcooked.
