I'm dinging Dear Hearts for using styrofoam bowls (come on y'all!), but everything else was superb. On a hot Wednesday afternoon, we parked on the street where there was plenty of space available at 4:30pm. Thankfully, we were the only customers while we dithered on what to get and tasted a few flavors. Seeing the styrofoam, I chose a waffle cone instead of my usual bowl. My husband got a bowl and the server filled it up with three good scoops. We sat under the shade of a tree at the picnic tables in front while other customers came and went for ice cream and the barber shop next door. There is no seating or even much standing room inside the shop. If this is your first time to Dear Hearts, note that you are going to the shop door closest to the river bridge. I saw a few folks go to the barber shop door mistakenly and then have to correct course. The ice cream was really good and the place had some really amazing flavors. The campfire s'more was marshmallowy and not filled with too much graham cracker flavor. Then they had a coffee oreo, moose tracks, hazelnut, and traditional flavors like rum raisin. read more

Used to be our go to spot for ice cream. I just ordered a medium soft serve in a cup with peanut butter sauce and oreo cookies. The girls working the counter barely filled the cup to the half way point (it would not have even filled a small cup). When we asked about it, they said the manager told them to cut back. On my most reason visit, the three teenagers behind the counter were... acting like teenagers. I got the wrong ice-cream, and the ice-cream was so soft it was melting as soon as I left the building. I am obsessed with their dairy free soft serve which is made with an almond milk base. It is so incredibly delicious! My go to is the dairy free soft serve twist (chocolate and vanilla). The ice cream itself is a solid 5 stars. I only gave the place 4 stars simply because the dairy-free soft serve isn't always available. Often times, I've gone there and was told the machine is down for cleaning or some other reason. I understand the machine needs to be cleaned, but it's happened to me in the middle of the day on a weekend or right as they've opened where you would think they would have already cleaned it prior to opening. It's frustrating to drive all the way there and not be able to get ice cream because the machine is down. Other than that, I have no complaints. Oh, dear. There's a lot to love about Dear Hearts. The variety of flavors. The friendliness of the staff. The creative cone offerings (all kinds of yummy cones). "So where are the other 2 stars, you lactose-intolerant monster?" A fair question. I got one scoop of Black Raspberry and one of Coffee... something. The fact that I can't remember which coffee offering I got is part of the problem. The ice cream, for all its inventiveness in regards to recipes/contents, is rather bland. I expected the Black Raspberry to awaken my taste buds, but it barely nudged them. (For reference: the BR flavor at Peaceful Meadows in Whitman, Ma remains my gold standard.) Came here as a kid in the 90s. I know it's (likely?) under different ownership now. I can't count how many wonderful memories I had as a kid coming here with my parents and friends. I usually got a slushy or a chocolate scoop on a sugar cone. I did come here June 2018 when visiting from CA with my girlfriend and got her to try her first Del's Lemonade. It was okay. Not like I remember, with the bits of lemon in it. I'm biased so this place is a beloved 1990-2003 memory for me. Hanging out at the bridge. Staring at Pawtuxet Cove and the river. I still came during my college years between 2003-07 when back in town, and came a few times between 07 and 2012 before moving. It likely needs dairy-free options like most places. This place was awful. Came here with a craving for soft serve, thought I'd try the strawberry flavor. It was disgusting, tasted like it was over flavored, strong almost sour strawberry flavor. Asked for the chocolate dip hard shell to try and make it better, but was told they don't do that on the '24 flavors', so I settled for chocolate jimmies. Still gross. STRIKE1! So that went in the trash and I went to order the trusty choco vanilla swirl soft serve with the chocolate hard shell, but apparently although that does 'qualify' for hard shell, it was too soft this evening, so no hard shell allowed!! STRIKE 2! So I settled for the choco/vanilla swirl with chocolate jimmies. Decent combo normally, but this soft serve had no flavor, completely bland. Boom, trash again. STRIKE 3! You'd think they'd be outta here after 3 strikes, but I thought 'well they have Del's lemonade, I can't go wrong there'. I was WRONG! This isn't real Del's!!! Be warned! It tasted watered down, texture was all wrong, and no lemons in it. The Del's joined its friends in the trash as well. STRIKE 539....DISQUALIFIED FOLKS!!! Never coming back. This place is awful! I left with a belly full of sugar yet completely unsatisfied. What do with my life now... where I go from here... Dear Hearts is Pawtuxet Village's only ice cream spot and it's always hopping! They offer about 16 flavors of ice cream and yogurt and Del's, a variety of cones and delicious toppings like hot fudge sauce. There's no indoor seating because it's a tiny place that's basically just a counter where you can order, but there are a couple of picnic benches outside so you can enjoy your ice cream in the sun. Dear Hearts closes up for winter (November - March or so...it was open this year for April vacation but I'm not sure exactly when it reopened) so you can't get your ice cream fix when it's freezing cold out, but it's wonderful when the weather is hot and you're looking for a cool treat. Prices are pretty standard for ice cream - $3.50-4.00 for a couple of scoops and a topping or two. read more

Ice cream in one of RI's more adorably quaint little villages. Dear Hearts is a tiny little scoop shop right on the Pawtuxet River in Pawtuxet Village. Like most similar places they have a dozen or so flavors at any given time, a few different cone and sundae options. The choices are somewhat more than a typical soft-serve stand with only chocolate and vanilla, and somewhat less than a place like Ben & jerry's, Friendly's or Cold Stone Creamery. As you can imagine, on a nice summer weekend there can be a bit of a wait, but it generally goes by quickly and the staff are always friendly. There's no seating inside - the place is barely big enough for the counter and a waiting line, but lets face it, it's much better to wander the park or the village with a cone of ice cream than it is to sit inside and eat it like a meal. The ice cream is good, but when is that not the case? I honestly can't differentiate between ice cream from most of these different shops. No actual Deer Hearts are served at Dear Hearts. read more

My principle gripe here is that they're one of those businesses that tacks on a "credit card charge." Either take them or don't, and with $4 ice cream cones, you don't need to pass on the pennies Square charges to your customers, nor inflate that charge. They also charge a dollar for sprinkles/jimmies. That said, their menu is HUGE - tons of flavors, tons of options and toppings and combinations, and I get the vibe that the staff comes up with new ones regularly. The ice cream is Bliss, so not made in-house, but good anyway. I suspect I'll be back because of the location's convenience, but it's never going to be my favorite scoop shop. read more

I went here today for the first time in almost 20 years and a wave of nostalgia/déjà vu swept over me. My grandma used to walk me down in the summers when I was little, buy me a cone, then sit me outside on the top of the bridge railing to eat it. It looks exactly the same in there as far as I can tell. I remember her always getting the black raspberry frozen yogurt, so that's what I got today. It was ok. Not as creamy or flavorful as other places I've had it at. One thing that bothered me was that there were multiple signs directing you to "ask the girls" behind the counter for this or that. That seemed unprofessional and bizarre. What? Do they never employ men? The woman working today was a lovely older lady and those signs would have annoyed me if I was her.
