My second time in Puerto Rico. Both stays have been in Old San Juan. I must say that I am much more pleased with Decanter than my previous hotel. While still noticeably older architecture, Decanter did have some significant updates. I also appreciated the hospitality of complimentary bottle of wine at check in with my status and the luggage hold after checkout. read more

I have never been somewhere where my expectations have been far surpassed!!! This started before I even went to the hotel. The hosts were already contacting me to assure that I was good to go and let me know what to do if I needed anything. There was a Fernando that really helped as well as the other staff who went above and beyond, even as far as reserving taxis for us during our stay. Our room was more than we could ask for. I didn't know the sofa bed was in a separate room, we felt like we were staying at an Airbnb! The location is smack dab in the center of Viejo San Juan, so if you plan to spend a lot of time there, pretty much everything is walking distance. It was perfect. Yes, behind the Decanter are a few bars so you do hear the last night crowds going home at night. A sleep sound machine we brought helped us avoid those noises! Oh and they have a great tapas and cocktail bar upstairs called El Cathedral! Give it a try!!! We hope to return soon!!! read more

Our stay at Decanter in a Terrace Suite was a delight and we'd absolutely love to return and repeat the experience. First of all, I don't know that I've ever stayed in a cleaner suite. And it was that way day after day after day - every day of the week we stayed there. Lifted two floors above the street with a nice view of the cathedral and even down to the water, the suite was roomy and tasteful. The dual zone AC worked perfectly and powerfully. The kitchenette was handy - no "don't touch the minibar or you'll be charged" nonsense, just a microwave, minifridge (empty and all for you!) and a lot of coffee and tea next to the coffeemaker, along with a decanter (of course), glasses and a mini sink. The ceiling fans were nice to have. There's a sofa bed, mini table, safe and plenty of storage. Toiletries are nice. We found the terrace and its (push-button) retractable awning to be a total delight. The front desk women were unintrusive but friendly and were very helpful anytime we needed anything (a special thank-you to Jo Alys who helped me find an open nearby store selling medical supplies when my wife was feeling poorly one night). We stayed at Convento the last time we were in Old San Juan, and much preferred the cozier feel of Decanter. Additionally, everything in the room pretty much functioned as intended - not something we experienced in our upgraded room at Convento, alas. The location for both is just perfect: everything is an easy walk for in-shape adults - there is SO much to do (and eat) that's just a stroll away. I've seen a lot of reviews mention noise. Yes, you'll probably hear some street noise - the hotel is located in Old San Juan. Please understand that this comes in rare waves, though - but one of those waves is going to be when the bars let out at night. While the terrace suite was well insulated from sound, the happy shrieks of revelers could be heard in the bedroom every night. These were happy noises, though, and transitory: not continuous, scary or troubling in any way. But we could hear them. If you don't want to hear them, you should probably stay somewhere else. (I always bring ear plugs with me on vacations in case of street noise, and I never even considered using them at Decanter.) Oh, and the rooftop bar (Bar Catedral - look it up here on Yelp) is loud while its open, but that's only Th-Sat (I think). One thing that could have been improved is that the lighting in the suite - while adequate - could have been better. Old eyes shaving an old face appreciate a little more light in the bathroom. Also, the water to the kitchenette and bathroom sinks did not appear to have a "hot" pipe to them - no problem for us (and there was a microwave right there), but just something to know. A fact people should know is that Decanter is one of those old-style hotels where you're given one big brass room key upon entering and you surrender it to the desk clerk as you leave for your day/evening, then recover it to enter your room on the way back. We never had an issue with finding a clerk to give us our key right away when we returned. Anyhow, as I said, we just loved the Decanter and look forward to returning. Fans in the room did not respond to remote control. TV was extremely difficult to use, no volume control, stuck on closed caption on all stations. Air conditioner would not respond to controls. Had to shut it off completely to stop the vibration noise. Exterior door to balcony had no glass, only cellophane covering the holes. Very old mattress. Dirty floors. Called a taxi to take us four blocks to the cruise ship terminal 4: taxi driver charged us $25 per couple (2 couples splitting the bill = $50 total), one bag each. Taxi rates on the city website said we should have been charged $8 per couple. Running a scam? Gray 20 year old 12 passenger van. Next time we'll stay at the hotels next to the cruise terminal on Pier 1-4. read more

We were booked for one night and we were looking forward to a 4.5 star small hotel experience. What we found was an old room with a nice patio. The furniture was old and dated , the bath towels were horrible and not sure I would use for garage towels. We also did not have hot water in our bathroom sink and when I mentioned it to the manager he only acknowledged I was correct there is no hot water. It is pretty uncomfortable shaving in cold water. Similar to camping out. All this for over $500 a night. I think Yelp should verify the rating on this hotel. read more

We had a great time here. It is conveniently located around lots of great bars and shops. The staff we came in contact with was always friendly and helpful with anything we needed and there is someone on site 24/7. The rooftop is beautiful and we sat up there and drank some wine one night to a beautiful view! It's super quiet at night but definitely hear more things during the morning hours. The only bummer is we only had a small window in our room and I wish we would have upgraded to a room with a view! The rooms are really clean and nice but definitely very small. read more

Our room was huge. There was a full living room with a sleeper couch, as well as a large bedroom and very modern bathroom. There was a sink and fridge along with wine glasses off of the living room. The balcony was very large, and was assessible from both rooms. There were comfy chairs and an umbrella outside as well. The only downside was that we stayed on a Saturday night and there is a bar directly upstairs. They played music and were frying food. The music was not too loud, but the smell of frying oil woke me from sleep. The doors to the patio do not have any kind of deal, and the smell came right inside. It was so strong that I thought all of our clothes would smell horrible of this oil. I kept the fans on high and stuffed towels into the bottoms of the door jambs. Seemed to help. We were headed out to our ship the next day, and they held our luggage for us while we walked around town. read more

What a great little hotel! I actually found this hotel on hotels.com then cross referenced them on yelp and trip advisor. I'm extremely happy we stayed here for our one night stay in Puerto Rico! The location is great. Easy access to explore old San Juan and also an easy cab ride to the cruise port. Our room felt pretty big, we had the balcony king. When we checked in the AC was on full blast (thank god, it was hot) and they had music playing from the tv which was an added touch. The receptionist that checked us in was really nice, same with the same girl who checked us out and held our bags for half the day. The hotel is also conveniently located above a bar with live music. We went to bed early and didn't even hear the music which was great! You can also get drinks from the bar and bring them to your room, but don't forget to return the glass! Overall, we would definitely stay here again. It wasn't the cheapest hotel ($200/night) but I felt like you definitely get your bang for your buck. read more

Loved my recent weekend stay at this Old San Juan gem. Good experience from beginning to end. Clean rooms, beautiful view, perfect location, great customer service. The staff, Blanca and Sarah, I believe, as well as others were warm and helpful. It's right in the middle of the city. So once you step out no matter where you turn there are things to see and do. My only suggestions would be to work on establishing parking for guests (even if just a small lot). We got a ticket because the signage is not clear on where to park for guests. Also a complimentary breakfast would have been great. There was good coffee though. I attached a photo of our view from our balcony suite. AMAZING! read more

We had a great stay here earlier this month. We were in the French Balcony Suite. No issues with noise. The suite was cool and clean upon arrival. It doesn't have an actual outside balcony -- more of a small courtyard, which we did not use. The rooftop balcony is very nice and chill for a late night drink. The staff here is terrific. Everyone was very kind and accommodating. Natalia and Angel were especially nice. I accidentally left my keys in one of the drawers upon checkout, and the staff mailed them back to me promptly at my home. I would definitely stay here again. read more

This hotel is subpar. I purchased two rooms and both were absolutely unacceptable. In one the balcony opened up to an alley. Very little sunlight. The room was cramped. The second was only slightly better as you can see by the photos there was mold and the bathroom was disgusting. They offered no discounts and stated they were fully booked so changing rooms wasn't an option. After we asked for the room to be cleaned on day two my kids found sand in their bed. We had been to the beach, which is why we asked for the room to be cleaned the next day. Apparently they just made the bed, sand included. You can hear the music from the bar upstairs while trying to sleep. We made the best of a bad situation. but I would absolutely not recommend anyone staying at this hotel. The only positive is the location. But these people really need to clean this place up. Don't let the pics on the ads fool you. read more

Absolutely in love with this hotel! My boyfriend and I originally booked a place to stay through Air BnB. Long story short, the place was unlivable so we had to scramble for a place to stay. We found Decanter Hotel online, booked, and immediately moved our things. What a pleasant surprise! Rooms were gorgeous- really high ceilings, nicely decorated, great airflow, roomy showers with incredible water pressure. There's an open air seating area for the complimetary breakfast; the restaurant isn't open yet but they still offer eggs and pastries in the morning. There's also a terrace open 24/7 on the 4th floor! Decent view, and plenty of room to set up an entertainment area. Every staff member we encountered was super friendly and asked if we needed anything. Laura at the front desk was SO sweet and made wonderful recommendations. She helped make our experience as good as it was. For a hotel that's been open less than three months I'm impressed. We will absolutely be staying here again. read more

We were so happy with our reservation at Decanter Hotel. Contacting them over the phone was very easy. Prices changes when you are booking during the week versus the weekend. There were 3 in our party and we decided to book with French balcony suite on the 3rd floor. We had a pretty cool view. The layout is a kind bed and bathroom and then in the living room area, there is a pull out couch (double) and there a kitchenette with fridge, microwave, sink, and wine glasses. There is a desk area and a table with 2 chairs. There was one TV in the living room area and one TV in the bedroom area. The AC worked really well but during the day, it's set so we couldn't adjust it if we wanted to. Inside of the room looks like they renovated recently, very modern looking and very clean. They have a keurig downstairs that you can use all day and an ice machine on the 2nd floor. The location is wonderful! We had a wedding at the Cathedral with the reception at El Convento and our stay was only 1 block away. Very convenient. If you have a car, it might be tricky to find parking because it is only street parking and early in the morning (6-7am) they put cones out for government officials so you might get a ticket if you park at the wrong parts of the street. You are walking distance to the Fort, wonderful restaurants, and bars. Grabbing an Uber is very common; Uber ride to the airport is $14 (but you cannot order an Uber at the airport, you'll have to use a taxi) and to Condado Beach it about $7. Overall, very happy with our booking and would recommend others to stay here. read more

I was looking for a hotel to stay in before my cruise and wanted to be close to the pier. This is THE cutest hotel! The staff is especially gracious and helpful. Pedro checked us in and gave us a list of places to go for good food. This hotel is close to everything. I am a cat rescuer and there are a lot of cats wandering the streets of Old San Juan and they offer little treats and to them, and don't complain when others bring food and water. And the cats know this is a safe place to hang near. The rooms are quite spacious and very clean, I will definitely stay here the next time I cruise or just come down for vacation. My husband and I stayed at the Decanter Hotel on our recent visit to Puerto Rico and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel is very new (opened in November 2015) and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Although their restaurant and bar were not yet up and running, the hotel told us that we could buy wine and cheese and enjoy it on the roof as the sun set and their cook prepared breakfast to order for us each morning in the courtyard. The room was immaculately clean and incredibly quiet (which I hear is rare for Old Town San Juan). In addition, the shower had hot water and our room was equipped with its own powerful AC unit. The location of the hotel could not have been more perfect. It is close to El Convento, the old fort, and centrally located in OSJ. I have already recommended the Decanter Hotel to friends and will definitely stay there again when I return to PR. read more

We refer to this as a mini-boutique hotel and had a wonderful 3 night stay here! The rooms were clean and airy. The staff was friendly and attentive, especially Angel and Gladys. It was in the ideal location. We had a perfect full moon view from the rooftop terrace enjoying the light breeze with a bottle of chilled wine and a cigar for the hubby! I got engaged at this Hotel which is a gem right in front of the Cathedral, walking distance to all the historical sites, amazing locally owned restaurants and shopping. Our room had a breathtaking view of old San juan we took tons of pictures from. Try to plan a year in advance and go during "las Fiestas de San Sebastian" you will be in the best spot in town without being in the middle of the crowds read more

We brought in the New Year in Old San Juan at the spectacular Marmalade Restaraunt. Only in the area for 24 hours, so happy my sister choose this lovely boutique hotel to stay in. It is located right in the center of town and has been restored to its original glory. The room was lovely, we had a suite with a large private terrace. All of staff are super friendly and anxious to be helpful. We did not eat at the rest around but it was buzzing the entire time we were there. Angel checked us in and out, mom named him correctly. : ). We travel the world and I rarely give five starts so four is super excellent! read more

What defines a room from a closet? A window. Given that definition, what we were given for our one night stay was a 10' x 11' closet off the interior lobby seating area with an air hole above eye level just to make sure that you could hear every single person coming and going from the hotel. I booked a 'double room looking on to the court yard'. Nowhere did it mention that I was booking a hotel room masquerading as a closet! This room should never have been sold to guests and the discription in any case was a complete mispresentation. Staff made absolutely no attempt to accommodate my request for another room or offer me compensation for the almost $300 I spent for one night. Beware. read more

I highly recommend this hotel! We stayed here one night after our cruise was over. We couldn't check in till 3pm but luckily they held our bags for us as we explored San Juan and we thankfully got to check in a little before 3! The gentleman who checked us in was friendly and even gave us a map with places he recommended. We booked a king balcony room which was beautiful! High ceilings, lovely bathroom with a little kitchenette when you walked in with a microwave and fridge. It was walking distance to the fort and so many restaurants. This hotel is pretty much in the center of San Juan. About a 15 minute walk to the cruise terminal. Staff was very friendly. Even called us a taxi to take us to the airport the next morning. The only complaint was how you could hear everything in your room. We could hear people in the room next to us with their kids. In the morning there were kids screaming and parents yelling. Not sure if this was outside our room or next store but again you can hear it all. Also there's this really great Mexican Cantina right around the corner we had dinner at called Aureola Mexican Cantina. HIGHLY recommend! read more
