DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Four weeks after the install, the deck started to separate from my home. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I called multiple times and submitted the paperwork (punch list) on the website as instructed for the warranty only to not be recontacted or told on the phone that someone would contact me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Eventually when I filed a complaint with the BBB I received a reply from the company telling me to book an appointment with a provided link. Extremely disappointed with Deck Helmet. One of their drivers thought it was acceptable to park on the sidewalk in a clearly marked fire lane at Walmart, completely blocking pedestrian access. Not only is this illegal and inconsiderate, but it's also a safety hazard -- especially for people with disabilities or parents with strollers. I had old deck and I wanted to renew it. Deck Helmet offered me a good price to renew it. They started the work and finished it. I thought they did it good job. After one year privacy Lattices they put on the fence started to break and falling down. Also, the fence started bending. I called them and ask them if they can fix with cost. I told them clearly I can pay for it just I need someone to fix the issues but they kept telling me some one from Warranty department will call me and nobody called me back. Completely unresponsive to warranty repair requests until I reported the company to the Better Business Bureau. The tech finally sent to inspect the areas of concern agreed that a section needed to be repaired and redone in order to maintain color consistency in that particular section of the deck. When he reported this to the owner (Jason), the owner then told me on the phone that the section was damaged was due to "lack of drainage and too much shade causing the wood to rot which then caused the coating to peel." I asked him if that was the case, why weren't similar areas of my deck experiencing similar damage? Bottom line: they will not respect their warranty even for relatively minor repairs. Save Your Money Deck Helmet, as operated by Jason Aptor in the Rockville Maryland area, is one of the most poorly managed companies I've ever had the misfortune of working with. A qualified general contractor would provide better quality & selection with less aggravation or the barrage of pointless "customer service" emails. The "low pressure wash" is done at 3500 psi, is not low pressure and shredded the wood! Decking should arrive after demo and repairs, but is delivered first. No dumpster provided so crew loaded debris into truck parked on our lawn. Jason diverts workers from 80 miles to move furniture back to our deck that he, who's about 2 miles away, removed. It goes on. Billing however is VERY prompt. The workers are very hard working and will do anything asked. But they shouldn't have to be asked to clean up, move furniture, or not park on the lawn. That points to a lack of training or follow up by management. Use Home Advisor, Angie's List, or a trusted neighbor, but DO NOT waste your money with Deck Helmet. I've received text bombs from Deck Helmet for a couple of years. No biggie, marketing. I finally respond to these clowns and make an appointment. On appointment day, I leave work early and sit around waiting for them. Finally, about 1/2 hour past the appointment time until I finally call them. Two transfers later I get the right guy. He says "I'm looking at google maps and see that you have a rooftop deck. We're not doing them right now that is probably why nobody came." When i asked why they didn't bother to call, I got "I'm not sure" in response. My guess is that this dedication to customer service extends to their "craftsmanship". So, I think it is 50-50. If they happen to do a good job on the first pass, you may be happy you saved a few bucks. If there are any complications you'll probably deal with the same customer service I encountered. (NOTE: I would give this company zero starts but this is not an option) Long story: Horrible, horrible customer service. I am certain that there is a memo in the home office that states "ignore and stall any request on a warranty until they go away." We got deck helmet applied to our wooden deck in 2016. It was OK looking but was impossible to walk on barefoot in the summer. By 2019 it had started to peel in many places. We filed a warranty claim in April of 2020 as the peeling was worsening and it looked like water was getting trapped under the boards and causing rot. The Deck Helmet people informed us that our warranty would not include labor and would be $4,900+ even though the original application was closer to $3,000. (Glad they had a warranty...without it we might have saved almost $2,000 - sarcasm). They did say that they would give us a gallon can of their product and we could do it ourselves (they even offered "free delivery" of the can...wow, they are so nice - sarcasm). We fortunately had the warranty certificate that the guy who did the sale gave us and it expressly said it covered parts and labor. So they begrudgingly approved the warranty repair in a very terse email. It is now 16 months later and I have been told 5 different times that the repair would have to be delayed due to: rain, Covid, temperature, winter, etc. I have sent more than 20 emails and spent more than 3 hours on the phone over many calls trying someone to get the work done. I have been told on at least 5 occasions that "a manager" or "a specialist" would call me back later that day or the next. I have NEVER received a call back. Every time I call, a different person answers and I have to explain to entire story again (this week I had to re-tell it three times in one hour long call) and there is never any record of the issue. The people I talk to have said "we don't keep records of any calls" and "we cannot access email" when I tried to forward the email threads. Unbelievable! The product is also not great (obviously) but was a less expensive alternative to replacing the entire deck...I wish we had spent it. The application burns your feet in the summertime and looks like liquid plastic, at best. The photos make it look nice. They promise warranty for 10 years! SAME SCOPE OF WORK. They, Justin, quoted me a price of $3950. He had to get the pricing approved by his boss. He asked to call me back and when he did he said it was APPROVED. I said YES to moving forward and scheduled an appointment for Monday, Dec 28 (today). They told me someone would meet me at the property between 2-4pm. At 4:30 I sent a text to Jason to get an ETA. A Sales person from Deck Helmet came to my home to provide an estimate to resurface my deck on 04/15. The sales person was very nice seemed very knowledgeable. He said if I signed a contact that day I would get $1000 off the repair. Sound good, so I signed the contract . I didn't have a clue what I was getting myself into. It took them 4 months to finally coming around and completely the job. During the whole time I had all of my deck furniture inside the house. Most of the time they don't let you know when they are coming. They just show up. Very poor communication. They had a subcontractor to do the job, and wanted me to sign off on completion of the job before I had a chance to see the deck. I did see multiple issues & they were addressed 2 weeks later. The next year, There where some deck boards with the coating coming off & the boards where cracking. I set up for a warranty repair online, and about two months later the Deck Helmet repair guy just sanded the board painted a thin coating. One week later the coating was coming off on those same boards. So they came out & looked at & ordered new boards. Three months later they came out & replaced the boards, and did a very unprofessional job. The second year, I had multiple board with coating pealing off. I set up for the deck to be repaired online 04/17. I've been getting multiple appointment with no call no shows. We decided to reface a deck with composite materials instead of re building from scratch and with Deck Helmet it was excellent experience from the quote process to the end of the project. We had a crew of 2 show up (unannounced) and wonder where the materials were. The left to go to Home Depot (didn't know until I saw the bags that came back), came back a few hours later and started filling in cracks with car bondo. No boards were replaced. . Next day was sanding and (spray) painting. I thought this miracle paint would be too thick to spray, but it's not. In fact, it sprays so easily that it's over sprayed onto my siding, brick and concrete around the deck. Now what's on the deck is starting to peel. Colossal waste of money! What a rip off after over $6k in fees it looks like a 12 year old did the work. The lead guy doing the work was scammer. He told me he could give me a deal at $1,200 painting the underside of a 16x 20 Deck. I told him no way and did it myself in an hour and a 1/2. Be advised the lie about their Resurfacing system is nothing more than Primer and paint from Home Depot as the label says on the 5 gallon can. He told me each board Would-be $100 to replace keeping in mind this board is $11 at Home Depot.I asked him why so high and he said the additional cost was for supplies I guess they used 14k gold screws.The Finnish job looks awful some boards were very close together others had a 3/4 inch gap between the boards. The worst customer service and communication I, as a customer, have ever seen. To begin with and we should have known from the sales pitch of "the deal ends as soon as we walk away" that this company wasnt going to be impressive; however, we didnt listen to our gut instinct and waited almost 90 days to have our deck completed. First, trying to get updates on their 3 step process (1st payment, then 2nd payment and materials ordered, and 3rd payment after job completion) was extremely painful as we constantly had to reach out to them for everything. When we called, the company doesnt even say "deck helmet", someone always just answers hello, and the guys who do answer are absolutely clueless as to details of a job, the process, etc. After one of these phone calls, I called the owner, Jason, directly and had my concerns and questions completely ignored as he raised his voice and told me "not to call his phone" and that he "was not going to" make any promises that the job would be done within the 90 day contract. Now, I understand that the company cant work if the deck is wet, however, no customer should feel like the job they paid for will be messed up or not even completed if they call to ask questions or voice a concern. Once we finally got the paint and supplies delivered, no one called to tell us and they were carelessly left on the side of our home where anyone could have grabbed them. My husband winded up moving them to the backyard and called to make sure the 2nd payment had been processed. Finally, a few weeks later I receieved a call saying the team would be out to complete the deck. But yet again, with no communication, no one showed up or called to tell me the crew had an issue with another job and we had to follow up with Deck Helmet to find out when someone would actually be coming out. The next day, 2 men showed up and finished the deck. They were polite and did a decent job which is the only reason the company received a 1 from me. This company overall was a terrible and a regretful experience. DO NOT USE DECK HELMET! Their subcontractor did a shoddy job replacing our wooden deck surface with Trex and replacing our stairs. They started by lightly spraying a primer coat of white paint on the support structures and the railings. Even though they laid a plastic tarp down, they still managed to get paint on the stone patio, the stone water features and the adjacent gardens that are under the deck. After removing the wooden deck, I expected the next step would be to put a second credit card thick coat of paint on the exposed structure and railings and get any areas that were missed by the spraying. Instead, they installed the Trex and then hand painted selected areas leaving the overall white features inconsistent and messy. The hand painting also got on the Trex. After they left, I realized that the replaced stairs were not properly aligned and each step was custom made so no two steps matched. I also found trash, tools, screws, saw blades and tape that was left behind. When I complained to Deck Helmet, with a lengthy email and photos, I was told that the subcontractor would come out to fix the problem. I also went online and generated punch lists to further document the areas that needed correcting. After getting no response, I decided to finish the job myself. After two weeks of meticulously taping and painting around the Trex and filling holes and areas that was documented but not addressed, I am now finished. DO NOT USE DECK HELMET! read more

It was a wonderful experience having Deck Helmet resurface three decks, and 2 two small sets of stairs with composite deck boards. In addition, they removed and built an entirely new set of outdoor stairs . They added additional supports to the existing framework of all three decks which stabilized everything. Working with Jason was a whirlwind. He talks, measures, ask questions and answers questions all at the same time. Oscar and Franklin were two extremely hard working employees and both were on this job from start to completion. They kept us informed every step of the way. They did an absolutely remarkable job and took care of every detail. It was a pleasure dealing with this company, and their employees. The Deck is done and what a deck it is. Deck Helmet came in Fast and hard like a A-10 laying down precision fire to save the Marines. They called and advised that materials would be delivered. Next day - Home Depot delivered the materials to do the job. On that same day the Deck Helmet contractor came and revised with me the agreement. The workers removed the furniture from the deck and the furniture beneath the deck. They worked and worked and worked. They did advise me that I should not stress the work while in process but wait till the finish. There is a method to the madness. When they were done the deck was amazing. I saw their ad in the clipper magazine and decided to call to get more info on resurfacing our deck. When I called, they set me up for a free in home estimate for the next day from 12-2pm. At 12:20 I get a call that they are on their way. Then at 1:40 I get a call with my estimate ($9,000 to $11,000). I asked how they got that estimate as I am still here waiting for their arrival. He said he looked online at my address and can see it in pictures. When I asked what happened over an hour ago when he said he was on his way, he told me they only come to your house when the contract is signed and ready to start working. The product is good and lasts several years. Maybe not 10 but close. This is the second time we had it done. First was 10 years ago. No complaints on that. My complaint is a lack of follow up on a rewear we made that was not done. This time we asked them to drive in loose nails before painting and it was not done. It's a hazard to walk on the deck without it fixed. We asked them to come back out several times to push the nails in and reapply the paint in those spots.
