The experience of working with Tyrone was very unprofessional. I am giving two stars only because the work was finished and it could have been worse. My husband and I wanted a deck upgrade, so we kept the foundation of our deck and wanted stair widening from top to bottom deck, railings built on the lower portion and new boarding and railing on the top deck. Tyrone gave us a fair price and was responsive and professional at first. Once work began, demo happened, then the weather turned for the worse for a few days, then the carpentry began. Tyrone had two different carpentry subcontractors come out on different days to work on the deck. after this was complete, we noticed some poor carpentry areas (large gaps in cuts of the wood in the handrails, crooked rails, and nails protruding out of a gate). When I took pictures of these and sent them to Tyrone, I heard nothing from him. Then, one of his subcontractors called me and told me Tyrone was not going to pay him until he fixed the mistakes I was complaining about. He went on to tell me that it was not his group of subcontractors that made the mistake, and that this was the second time Tyrone was withholding pay from him for a job for mistakes he didn't make. As whoever reading this can imagine, getting a call from a subcontractor is not common practice (as I would imagine, we are new homeowners). When I confronted Tyrone about this, he said he had no idea how his subcontractor got my phone number...and so it all began. This was the start to several weeks of continued unprofessional behavior. Demo materials sat for several weeks before I finally complained that the trash needed to be hauled away, as we live in a homeowners association and could get fined. And the poor carpentry areas took an extraordinary amount of complaining on my part to get fixed. As painting began, I noticed that the gate they had built was crooked (slanted horizontal and vertical boards that didn't align with the rest of the deck). We asked for it to be fixed and was met with extreme opposition. I was admonished for not telling him sooner, and was told that the gate is supposed to be crooked (hmm, really?), and if I wanted it fixed it would be considered part of a warranty. The last straw was when he gave subcontractor our credit card info to charge us for painting when our contact was clear that we would pay for this entire project in three payment, and all to Tyrone directly. When I complained about this (after a few hours of trying to figure out what happened and cancelling credit cards) I was again met with unprofessional behavior. This is when I went onto the MHIC to make a complaint. This is also when I found out that the license this contractor gave us on our contract did not exist. So, now I'm dealing with an unlicensed contractor. If you want licensed professional work, go elsewhere. Do your research (is the contractor licensed on MHIC?). Look at all the reviews (Yelp/BBB/Angies List), and ask for references from recent jobs. We unfortunately learned a valuable lesson in this experience, so there was some good that came out of it. read more

Overall: Would not recommend. It took Tyrone and his crew 8 months (yes...I said 8) to complete my deck. I gave him the benefit of the doubt but he kept making excuses. He also backed out of completing the patio because his crew didn't have "time" but then tried to up sell me on staining the deck (hmmmm....no time for a patio but time for staining...ok). Unlike the other reviews, he did not finish in time for the event I told him about that was supposed to be in May, or the event in June as well as 4th of July (which he promised to finish by). He completed in October when deck season was over. Though the deck is nice, the finishing touches are not. I do want to note that he did reduce the price at the end, but that was only because I wouldn't let him break the contract (I wanted him to finish the patio). In the end, I was very disappointed as i initially wanted to go with someone else but wanted to support his business. Would not recommend his services but if you decide to go with him I would 1) make sure you include completion date in contract 2) add penalty if not completed in time 3) include everything you discussed in contract as he will try to change things midway 4) make sure you are there when workers are digging as they might drill through things they shouldn't 5) make sure to tell him how often you would like him to update you because he will not and will also not answer your calls or texts read more

Never completed job. Took money. So poorly constructed would not pass inspection will have to tear down and redo before selling property. Owner lies and swindles out of money then drops off a few unskilled laborers who are unable to communicate to do a shoddy dangerous job. Check BBB, license history and consumer complaints as we should have. Took 4 months after tearing down old deck and leaving all of the dangerous material strewn across our yard just to get started, tore up the yard, destroyed the fence and tried to use intimidating and threatening tactics to extort money before completing job. Beware and do not do business with Tyrone. He is charming and convincing but does not even come to site to manage the job. Does not do a final walkthrough and he turns in to a very different person when you start to hold his company accountable. It is scary. read more

Overall, I would NOT recommend Deck Renovations. The good news is that the deck is built and it is a pleasure to sit outside and enjoy the spring weather. The bad news is that project management and attention to detail were poor and there are numerous areas on the deck that were not done well. My husband had to redo the steps as they were not built level. Several posts are crooked, the post caps are not the same (some are flat, some are pyramid shaped), the fascia boards are not flush and we discovered when redoing the steps that the workers put the side with the wood grain on the inside. The deck is structurally sound since extra joists were put in because the inspector failed it the first time. You might get the lowest estimate but it was an irritating and somewhat stressful five weeks waiting for the deck to be built. We never knew if workers were coming and there were only a handful of days where they actually put in a full day's work. Two different crews did the work and the second group was not particularly skilled. They asked to borrow tools and screws. If none of that would bother you, by all means hire Deck Renovations. But if you want to save yourself a huge headache I'd recommend going with another contractor. read more

Deck Renovations just completed replacing our old wood deck, stairs, and railings with high quality Trex vinyl. Our deck looks brand new, and they did a terrific job throughout. Communication with them was a pleasure. Mr. Anderson definitely does have his clients' best interests in mind. He was very flexible in terms of options, timing, methods of payment, and so on, and was a pleasure to work with. He checked in with us to make sure things were going well and visited in-person daily to review the progress. Most importantly to me, he was not pushy when we started looking. He gave me the time I needed to think through the options, and didn't keep emailing me every day or calling to push a decision (which is something others did). I had high hopes for this company, as Tyrone seemed responsive and pleasant, and gave me a quote for replacing a roofdeck railing that was slightly lower than others I had received. He even said he would throw in a power washing. I decided to go with them because, as they are supposed to be deck specialists, i assumed they would know the safest and best practices for securing the railing. Well, to begin with, the power washing was done by a friend of his who had never done it before, and ended up stripping the paint from some of the railings, and made some of the posts splinter. (He then quoted me a price to sand the posts, though they wouldn't have needed to be sanded before the power wash!) Then, the crew that came to assemble the railing actually used nails, rather than bolts, to secure the railing, and didn't put up metal brackets to hold the corners of the railing together - it wasn't until another handyman came to sand and stain the deck about a month later (at which point the corners had started warping), that I knew about it. (The new handyman ended up putting up the brackets.) Finally, Tyrone's crew left a bunch of wood in our driveway, rather than cleaning everything up - we had to ask the handyman to take them away. All in all, a very negative experience. read more

I would not recommend them to anyone. Seemed nice and professional at first, but like the other reviewers mentioned, Tyrone's responsiveness dropped drastically once we signed the contract. The first subcontractor who started the work had no concept of quality: the deck was not sanded before it was stained & started splitting in days. Splintered wood was not sanded, and nail holes were unfilled. Eventually, after a month of many calls and texts, Tyrone came back to check the work and agreed it was a bad job. The stain used was peeling in a week, and he blamed it on the trees around our deck. The first subcontractor replaced the railing of our 20 year old deck with new wood, and it was already bending and clearly of poor quality. Tyrone sent a second subcontractor who just showed up to our place without notice who agreed that the job was bad, used poor quality wood, and would need to be completely redone. Again, Tyrone disappeared for a few weeks. After many phone calls and texts, we had to pay second subcontractor agreed to do the work to basically redo the whole process again-- Tyrone refused to pay for the deck to be fixed. He did, however, bring new paint which was under warranty, sandpaper, and wood putty for the subcontractor. My mistake here: I paid all the money up front. I should have just paid for materials, until the job was finished well and given them the rest. I was going through a major health event, so I trusted them, and they failed. I used this vendor 2 years ago to replace some wood on my deck and was not happy with the work completion. My contact person was Tyrone and i remember contacting him several times to make corrections such as, wood he missed to nail in, and wood not nailed in completely to make contact with the other supporting wood. secondly, I believe the type of wood he replaced were not the treated wood. read more

SCAM ALERT: The experience trying to deal with Tyrone Anderson was very bad. He will try to trap you into a contract by being very nice and take all the money. Once he takes the money he acts very differently and unprofessional. He created wrong plans for my deck and ordered wrong parts and when I questioned him, he stopped responding to me. He is an unlicensed contractor and has many complains and cases filed against him. It has been almost 1 year since I paid him the money and trying to deal with him and finally had to file a fraud case against him in the Civil court. $13,000 of my money is stuck with him since 1 year. When I checked the county website with his name, I found out that he already has pending cases against him as he tried to scam other home owners as well by taking money and not doing the job. Save your time and money. Definitely check the license and complaint history before hiring contractors to avoid getting scammed. read more

My Deck was never finished to my satisfaction and it does not meet my county guidelines. Now I have to find someone else to finish my deck and to correct the defects in order to pass final county inspections. There were some scheduling conflicts and setbacks due to HOA and weather, but it's been a whole year and not only have we not seen any work, we haven't gotten our money back. We've been trying to sell our house so we needed to fix our deck, and it has been a nightmare trying to contact these guys. We learned our lesson - don't pay upfront. I will start by saying that it actually hurts me to write this review as I wanted to be able to refer neighbors and friends to Tyrone but I can no longer do that. I chose Tyrone and his company because he was initially responsive, great price, and seemed very dedicated to the job since I had given him a deadline for an event I was having. The first problem came when his crew decided to let the supply delivery truck drive through my and my neighbors' new sod on a wet a rainy day, featuring and ripping up the sod. Tyrone agreed to cover damages initially but I have yet to receive any confirmation of the damages invoice being paid. When I call to check or send messages to both he and his associate I get no response. The deck was completed June 30th so that's 3 months of no contact. The other problem was that he agreed to re-do my steps with composite material. It is now October and I have not heard anything from Tyrone nor have any of my calls been returned. The deck is great, with some minor flaws, the process was OK, the workers worked hard. I feel like Tyrone took my money and ran. He is great at first but make sure everything is done and complete before final payment because he may disappear. Update: Tyrone reached out to me and we were able to get things resolved. In my initial review, the MAIN issue was communication and responsiveness. The work is great and a crew came out immediately to finish my steps as agreed and the sod issue was also resolved. I had an appointment with Deck Renovations scheduled and confirmed. He requests a 2 hour window. He never showed up. I waited around at home on a work day with a 1pm appointment from 11a-3p and nothing. If I had taken the day off of work, I would be furious. Luckily, I had the option to work from home so it was not a total waste for me. Be wary of being stood up Update - The owner called me after I posted the review and said they had me on their schedule twice. However, the only info I received had today's date. He said he would email me a quote based on some questions he asked me on the phone and previous work they have done recently. He was very nice and apologetic. Latest Update - I received a very reasonable and detailed quote. However, I am postponing the project until early next year. I will reach out to them to complete the project at that time. Nothing but great things to say about Tyrone & Deck Renovations. Needed help in reconstructing a small-ish deck that was off-balance using Trex material. Tyrone took the time to drive out and give a fair estimate even though my schedule made it tough to meet him in person. His crew was able to fit me in relatively quickly, and did not take very long to get the job done at all. Tyrone also made himself available several times throughout the process to discuss aspects of the job, and making selections. Lastly, when the job was completed, I was nit-picky about a few detail things, but Tyrone questioned nothing. He was happy to have his guys go back and fix things until I was satisfied, and without tacking on extra costs, etc. Deck Renovations is a quality, reasonable and quick company to work with when it comes to deck work. I am happy to recommend Tyrone and his company.
