One of the best BBQ places in RVA, in my opinion! We always enjoy our meal whether we choose to eat at the restaurant or take it to go and eat at home, it's hot, delicious and fresh! While the restaurant itself is not huge or the most fancy, it definitely has the cozy, down-home vibe. There is a mixture of booth seating and longer bench style tables for larger parties as well as a few outside tables on the covered patio. The staff is always friendly and welcomes you as you enter to order at the counter. They have a pretty vast menu for a smaller place and offer a variety of meat options as well as vegetarian and vegan options! And if you're looking to feed a crowd, they have family meal packs, which are a great value! One of our go-to favorites is the Train Wreck Bowl which includes Mac & cheese, cowboy beans, your choice of BBQ & 2 slices of cornbread! Absolutely delicious! The Food: We got the small Family Pack (1lb. Pork, 1pint Collard greens, 1pint macaroni &cheese, 1pint coleslaw), 4 buns. We also got some hushpuppies. The chopped pork was very good and I enjoy that it comes unsauced. We ate-in and there were several sauces to choose from. There was Carolina, mild, and sweet, as well as a few hot sauces like Tapatio, Choulula, and Texas Pete. Mild was my favorite. Carolina was very vinegary and sweet was very sweet. The collards were some of the best I've had; they were well seasoned and not watery. The mac & cheese was a bit overcooked and grainy but not overly so and they were flavorful; I'd get them again. The coleslaw is not made with pickles (yay!) and had mild seasoning. It was cold and fresh. The buns that come with the family meal are just Martin's potato rolls, not the "toasted, fresh, baked bun" as is described on the menu. When asked to heat them, I was told that they can't. They don't have a microwave. This was the ONLY bad note of our visit. It felt very unfriendly and was poor customer service to not offer a way to heat the bagged buns. I expected freshly made buns so I was already disappointed, and then being told a restaurant has no way to heat a bun seems ridiculous. I wish I could've seen my face when I was told they couldn't do it. It makes me wonder what else they buy in bulk or outsource and aren't making at the "restaurant". The atmosphere: It's less than a dozen booths to eat at with what looked like a large, closed "employees' dining room. I assume they just don't want to clean the whole place and do they had it partitioned off. The area to dine in is right next to the cashier so conversations and orders are all you hear while you eat. It wasn't pleasant and it would have been nice to sit away from the front door and order area. We couldn't have a private conversation. It was clean and plenty of napkins, utensils, etc were available to grab. The service: Ordering was pleasant and efficient. We promptly had a question about an ingredient answered. The only service sticking point was, again, the lack of competency to come up with a way to warm a bun. Overall, we are planning on returning to try the ribs and wings but I will definitely find out if they have warm buns if I get them again. We had enough leftovers to make 2 more small meals later this week at home and everything tasted great the second and third time around. read more

Very easy to order ahead, the Train Wreck bowl was a great mix of mac and cheese and beans with the pulled pork and cornbread- would highly recommend that for a good mix! I had a short time to eat so I got 1/3 lb sliced brisket it was delicious the smoke flavor was perfect. It didn't even need bbq sauce, I sliced it with a plastic fork it was like warm butter. I will definitely be returning with friends. read more

We had the small family pack with Brisket being the protein and our sides were: collards, Texas caviar and the southwestern slaw. My husband also ordered the 3 ribs. The slaw and Texas caviar were amazing and such nice brightness to the saltiness of the brisket (but not overly salted). The brisket is amazing but does border on too salty and I LOVE salt. But the crust and the sauce make it a great brisket. The house sauce adds a nice sweetness and zing. I didnt have the ribs but my husband loved them. The only downside was the collards. I'm a collard master so the first thing i noticed was a LOT of large, tough ribs. You need to cut those out because no matter how long you cook them, they remain tough and stringy. And they were bland and needed salt. As far as I could taste there was no vinegar added which is an absolute must for good collards. But overall the food was very good and we will definitely order again! We ordered out so I can't comment on the ambiance. I'm fighting Leukemia so no public outings for us. read more

I've lived down the road from here for years and never checked it out. We got take out last night and were BLOWN AWAY. Food: We started with the Texas Caviar, Mac & Cheese, and Hushpuppies. All were great, but I really loved the hushpuppies. They were so flavorful and warm. Then, we had Pulled Chicken sandwiches. It was fantastic. Great flavor. Well-cooked. Fresh buns. We ended with their PB Pie which was the best PB Pie I've had in Richmond. Service: They've got their takeout and catering down. Super quick and easy ordering. Friendly enough staff. My friend and I were looking for barbecue so we stopped in. I had the brisket sandwich and she had a brisket by the pound. The sandwich was delicious. They use potato rolls. I got the spicy coleslaw, which was unique, but not that much different from regular coleslaw, but very tasty. I also got the potato salad which tasted like grandma made it.My friend got the macaroni and cheese which she said was very creamy and loved it. We also got hush puppies and cornbread, which were delicious. The cornbread was more on the sweet side different than I'm used to. The sweet tea was great as was the Boylan's cherry soda. We ate outside on the covered patio. Everything was very comfortable, and the service was very friendly and helpful as we had never been there before. Peter did a good job offering suggestions for me since I could not decide as my mouth was watering!! I ordered the (3) piece catfish, (4) smoked fried wings, (6) hush puppies, & thankssssss to Yelp! I ordered the complimentary Mac N Cheese. After ordering, you will receive a buzzer. The buzzer will buzz once your meal is ready. I grabbed my beverage and found a table in the dining room. Once my food was ready, it was piping hot and smelling outrageously delicious! The catfish was hot (MTO) and seasoned well. Their homemade tarter sauce was the best match. I'm happily surprised the Mac N Cheese exceeded my expectations. It was creamy and flavorful. I wish I had a thick layer of cheese on top tho! The hush puppies were good & even better with that HONEY BUTTA!! Good LAWD, mouth dropping! The smoked "fried" wings were good, however they would have been perfect actually fried with that tender crunch. These wings are more smoked than anything. This was our first visit since we don't live here. This place was amazing! I had the best fish taco I've ever tasted. I had the potato salad and it was homemade and delicious and different than what I make but very good. My hubby had the jumbo cherry bourbon wings and he usually gets his wings plain but they were large and delicious. They have homemade pies which are my weakness. We shared a decadent chocolate piece which was very rich and made with a chocolate crumb crust. If you are a chocolate lover you will love it. I prefer a standard crust with a pudding filling. Ordered to-go for my first time here and it was very good. Will come back again for sure. I ordered a pound of brisket ($17). It was super tender and delicious. It comes dry (sauce on side) and by itself without sides. The hush puppies with honey butter rock! My only gripe is they are really small. A large order is $6.95 for 15, but because they are small they don't go far for the family. My picky teen ate all her pulled pork sandwich, which is a great sign! My 7yo liked the kids ribs (she said 4 stars, she's well trained), but said all the sauces were too spicy. Mac and cheese was fine. I had checked this out on yelp and thought I knew what I wanted. However, they no longer have bison burgers and they only have green beans on their catering menu. I ended up supplementing with a veggie at home. I think the sauces are all good. Our school had a fundraiser here this past week and I discovered they have family meal packs which is a great perk. For $43 after tax you can get a bbq dinner for four people. this is great for days when you don't want to cook and still want some thing that feels homemade and is substantial. We got the pulled pork, barbecue, macaroni and cheese, slaw, and potato salad along with rolls. You get to pick which sauce you'd like as well. Don't be fooled by the size of the package that the food is served in: it will be more than enough to feed all of you. I've had many things here and they're all good. So many places their chicken has no smoke flavor at Deep Run Roadhouse that smoke is an important part of the total flavor. Now let's discuss their sides their jalapeño Mac & Cheese is the perfect blend of creamy and spice, and if you don't want the spice then the plain Mac & cheese is creamy and yummy too. All their sides are yummy. I can't eat fiber but I'm told everything is delicious. While the food was very good, I must say that the service was below par. After ordering on line and having our card processed, we went to pickup 10 minutes after the suggested 20 minute wait. Upon arriving we were told the order didn't" print" so they had to start all over. After waiting again, there was no effort to accommodate our trouble. It was especially troubling since there were two young men who had a deadline to return to Quantico with us. BBQ is a personal choice, but I love their bbq! I usually get the cherry bourbon sauce with the pork. I choose to dip some of the meat into the sauce...there's no need to cover the terrific smokiness, and it's unnecessary to add sauce. This meat is moist and not dry at all. The sides are spectacular. My favorite is the macaroni and cheese. It's better than what my mom used to make, and I loved hers! Flavorful, sharp cheese that covers the macaroni pasta with the right ratio of sauce to pasta. Comfort in a bowl! If you want brisket, you better get there early. It's worth it. They add burnt ends to the cowboy beans... these are not your run-of-the-mill baked beans. They are outstanding.
