First visit to this restaurant. I've driven past it a lot and decided to try it. I tried the brisket, burnt and baked beans and the jalapeño slaw. The flavor of the brisket was excellent! As good as anybody in Richmond for sure. However, the Cut wasn't quite right. Not really cut across the grain so it ended up being a little stringy. But very moist and tasty. The jalapeño slaw was an A+. Loved it. The burnt end baked beans were probably a B-. They were solid, but with burnt ends being in the name, I was kind of looking for some actual bits of burnt ends. Alright y'all. In summary in case you just want me to get straight to the point, oak and apple is absolutely fantastic. From the ambiance to the food, 100% spot on. I arrived around 12pm on a Monday. I was immediately greeted by the bartender who sat me at the bar outside (my request). I asked for a surprise me drink and they asked a few questions and when I received the drink, It was absolutely spot on to what I normally enjoy. For food I ordered the brisket with a side of Mac n cheese and Oh My Goodness this hit so hard. The brisket was easy to cut into, so much flavor without the sauce, but I'm a sauce girly so I got their "smokin hot" and "apple bbq" and wow, the smokin hot sauce had a lot of flavor and a nice spice to It! The Mac n cheese was cheesy with a soft texture where most places are normally rough at least in my experience! Now on to the service. Carey and Berit are by far the best bartenders in Richmond. Nice guy, definitely tried his best, but the service was a little spotty. They didn't check on us much, but honestly, I didn't care. I wasn't there for the customer service. I was there for that brisket. Turns out it was happy hour. Our waiter didn't mention it, but luckily the folks sitting next to us did. So we ordered the chicken sliders that come with slaw and fries. One word, flavorful. You could taste the smoke in the chicken, and the sauces stole the show. The apple BBQ and hoisin BBQ sauces are top tier. I would buy them by the jar if they sold them. But the real reason I was there was the brisket. As soon as it hit the table, I went straight for the burnt ends. So much flavor, so much smoke. You don't even need sauce. That brisket speaks for itself. For my personal cheat code, I usually cut the brisket in half, throw it on their brioche bun, and hit it with a little sauce. It never misses. But even without the sauce or bun, it's perfect. I will come back to Richmond just for this brisket. It is that good. If somebody knows a place that serves a better brisket, feel free to put me on. This was easily the worst barbecue I've ever had, so bad that I couldn't even wait to write this review. We ordered four meats, four sides, and upgraded to cornbread. The meats were wings, brisket, spare ribs, and pulled pork. Every single one was extremely dry, like beef jerky. We kept trying the next meat hoping something would be better, but nothing was. The spare ribs were boneless yet so hard it felt like I was chewing bone instead of meat. The chicken wings were even worse. There were so many feathers left in them that when I tried to pull one out, half the drumstick came with it because the meat was that tough. The cornbread was an absolute brick. It was so hard I couldn't even poke through it. When I showed our server while literally trying to press into it, he acknowledged it and said he would bring us dinner rolls instead. We never received them, even after the meal was finished. When I asked for the cornbread to be removed from the bill, I was asked whether we had eaten it. We took one bite and couldn't eat any more. The server even admitted it may have been sitting under a heat lamp too long. Overall, the food was terrible and the service was disappointing. Aside from a brief apology, nothing was done to address the issues we raised, including forgotten items. We were told, "next time will be better," but there will not be a next time. Celiac- Gluten-free Review I was hype to try Oak & Apple because they have wings, howeverrrr they do not have a dedicated fryer- the wings are smoked and then typically deep fried. I was told that they could grill them for me. I was set to order 10 wings, but was wary of how the texture would be if they were grilled so scaled down to 5. The texture of the skin on the outside was rubbery as I anticipated, but, if this makes sense, I could tell that if they had been fried they would have been A1. The overall flavor and the texture beyond the skin was so good. Wouldn't order them again, but if you can have the wings fried, I say that's a solid choice. Thanks for accommodating me anyhow, I do appreciate the effort. I also got a side of the tea braised collards, which surprised me. Have never had collards prepared that way and I did enjoy the flavor. They were also very clean, and if you've ever had collards that haven't been washed properly, you know how off-putting it is to catch stray pieces of dirt in your teeth. What really fell flat for me were the BBQ nachos. Queso, pulled pork, burnt end beans...couldn't tell where one flavor started and the next one ended. Overall very bland, which was disappointing because it just felt so uninspired. Was expecting more smoke, especially from the burnt end baked beans. And if I'm not getting excited about flavor from your pulled pork or burnt end beans, I'm going to assume that it's going to be the same for the brisket, chicken, and ribs. What stands out for me here- if you're into cider, they've got really good choices on tap, and rotate about ten different types. That's unheard of just about anywhere. I also experienced nothing short of top-tier service, and the people who work the bar are friendly and personable. It's really easy to chat with other patrons seated at the bar as well, I felt like a regular and could have sat there for hours. Even the regulars coming in to grab to-go orders struck up conversations while they were waiting. It feels like a third place with its chill atmosphere and easy vibes. Even with the food not being my favorite, I could easily see myself sliding into a spot at the bar regularly just to hang out and have a few drinks. Also do appreciate the inclusion of gluten-free/gluten-free options, even if I'm not a huge fan. So this is a solid 3.5 stars for me- rounded down since Yelp won't let us do half stars. read more

This was my first experience here, but I was always a huge fan of some of their previous restaurant ventures that are no longer around, so the bar was set kinda high--and it did lot disappoint! Everything was delicious! As a vegetarian, I appreciate their making it possible for us to enjoy bbq too! I came here for lunch with my boyfriend yesterday. We took the Pulse bus which was only a few blocks away. First of all, I love the mural and patio space at Oak & Apple. I've been wanting to try their BBQ for a minute, and was in love with what I ordered. When we got there, we were told to seat ourselves. My boyfriend ordered the BBQ Philly with a side of cheese curds. We both adored the cheese curds. However, his sandwich felt a little plain and we admitted would've tasted better with some BBQ sauce on the pulled pork. I originally ordered their taco special, but they found out it was sold out after placing the order. Instead I ordered the BBQ Bahn Mi with the brisket which was incredible. (Do note there is an upcharge on brisket and cheese curds, I didn't know this about the brisket). I got a side of the burnt end beans. The brisket was fatty and melted in my mouth. Also tried a Southern Smoked Club. A big slice of smoked turkey is topped with bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles and slathered with pimento cheese, all piled on a toasted bun. Delicious! HH smoked wings a $1 (minimum of 3), Taylor suggested the sweet hot chili and oh my goodness, smoked perfectly and the sauce was a sweet spice which paired well (5/5 daughter approved), they also offer two sliders (pork and/or chicken) with a sample of apple slaw and side of fries $7, I added a cup of the burnt ends baked beans $4. I got two pork sliders (I'm not a thigh meat girlie, I know...I know) but the pork (4.4/5) was smoked well and flavorful and still moist and the slider bun omg so good (5/5) topped with the apple slaw (3.8/5) and the apple BBQ sauce and Hoisin BBQ both very good (5/5). The fries were plentiful and piping hot lightly seasoned with salt and pepper (5/5), the beans were good and had ample bits of burnt ends (3/5). My only wish was for a thicker ranch (2.6/5) as it was thin but good flavor! Ohhh $3 well drinks (I opted for vodka and pineapple 4/5). Overall I just have to say this restaurant is sloppy. The meat tastes like it's rushed. I ordered the 3 meat platter which is $45 for 3 sides, 3 meats, and some corn bread. The cornbread is fine. It's served with a salted butter on the side. The brisket was not good. It's extremely fatty and chewy. I believe they are not cooking it long enough to render the fat and muscle. The pulled pork has a good Smokey flavor but is almost more like pork floss or pork jerky with how dry it is. This is sad since this is what Virginia is known for. The chicken wings however were delicious. They had an amazing texture and bite to them. The smoke really came through and I loved the Cajun dry rub they used. Even though they are served cold, they were delicious. We ordered loaded fries, but unfortunately we can't comment on the flavor since we didn't get them. The sides were actually tasty. The beans have chunks of brisket in them and are sweet. The potato salad is the way I like it with eggs and mayo. The Mac and cheese is also tasty. I am the coast to coast seeker of quality local BBQ and found some sensational BBQ at Oak and Apple! I had the Pile High sandwich of smoked Angus brisket (that was moist), bratwurst sausage, zesty pulled pork, and apple slices, that was excellent on a quality bun but the sauces stole the show. The Apple BBQ sauce is a bit tart with green apple and was my surprise favorite but close behind was the Smoking Hot, which had some great spice combo working for it, the " Alanama White " Mayonnaise based sauce was a great blend of creamy but not too thick with some spice.
