The short review: Do NOT go here! If there was a NO STAR rating-I'd give it. The long review i.e. what happened: Sadly, Sept. 5th, 2012, our beloved mother died a sudden and tragic death. Our finances were/are strapped-to say the least, so we were not able to go to the home that we wanted to take her to. My brother had found a good, affordable crematorium to go to but there were complications with the coroners and he had to use the services of DEERCREEK Funeral Home in San Leandro, CA 94578 instead. At first, Jay seemed to be helpful and told us that there were certain services that he was going to charge a minimum for, was kind enough to let us pay him the following week-when we had the money for her cremation, and worked with the coroners insane inability to take care of my mother's case in a timely manner. I was very shocked and upset by the unexpected nightmare of losing Mom and I only wanted to deal with things via email. Having not heard from Jay in a couple of days, I emailed him to find out what was going on with my mother. No reply. So, I emailed him the next day. No reply. That was just the beginning of a series of ill-fated communications that only upset me more as time went by. When I did not hear back from him, I HAD to call his office and has specifically told the operator that I did NOT want to speak to anyone I just needed to have correct email. What does she do? Transfers me to his cell phone to talk with him! This happened more than once. It was a VERY frustrating, upsetting, and deeply disappointing experience having to deal with this man-and his people-who, most certainly, did not reflect what is depicted in his website. In one of his last last emails to me he even has the unmitigated gall (not to mention crass, insensitive, bad taste!) to refer to how his services to us were far above what he charged us! That isn't all! When we picked up Mom's ashes from him we were handed a cheap, black plastic box, with her ashes in it. I was speechless and could not believe it. The final blow?: After another volley of emails he concludes that he did not charge us the $75 charge for the "alternative container" as he calls it ("FOR FREE!"-he included it in our discount price) and said that there were urns that could be bought from him for $299-$375.00! Maybe he is just "kind and caring" for those who have money; I don't know. It is an understatement to say that it is deeply disturbing to me that my mother's remains had to be handled by this place with this man. I wish to God that we'd been able to put her in the hands of caring, kind, thoughtful and sensitive people who also treated us the same way. I am afraid that was not the case...what an awful way for everything to end... read more

I am sorry for the unfortunate situations of the previous reviewers. I have only had very positive dealings with Jay. I have used his services 5 times since 2002. 4 of the 5 situation posed some challenge for Jay - mild to extreme and Jay has always handled them well. When my father died in 2002, my parents had not preplanned any arrangements. My mother told me the only thing my father wanted was to be cremated within 24 hours his death! As I called funeral services from the nursing station at the hospital, I could not believe that every place that I called told me it would take 1-2 weeks to complete the cremation process. It was extremely important to my mother that my father's one request be carried out so I kept calling. When I finally reached Jay Spencer at Deercreek he told me he thought he could work it out but it might cost a bit more since they would have to use services in San Francisco. He had to track down the doctor at a meeting to get the death certificate signed. But he called me 24 hours later to tell me that I could pick up the ashes. In 2005 my mother passed away and I again used his services for her uncomplicated cremation. I have twice used Jay to help when the person who died was extremely obese which makes the process much more difficult. Again, he provided competent, compassionate services. He has assisted when a friend passed away and removing her from the house was made very complicated because the only way down from her bedroom was a very narrow, spiral staircase. I have always found him to be kind and caring. I do not have a lot of money so I don't think he is kind and caring only to those who have money, as a previous reviewer suggested. His communication has always been prompt. I recommend him to everyone and am glad to know I can call on him when needed. I have a friend who has also used his services for both of her parents. She also was quite satisfied with Jay and the services she received. read more

DO NOT USE THIS PLACE DO NOT TRUST JAY...............he acted nice at first, we lost our loved one on November 2, 2012 and still have not gotten his ashes. He does not have the time to meet us there, and we are from out of town, he is rude, cold, and callous, he does not care what we are going through, this is NOT RIGHT, he should not even be in business. Jay at Deercreek recently helped me with the death of my husband. He was patient and kind. Offering me the service I requested at a fair price with no pressure to add extras - just straight answers for my questions and needs. In addition, Jay has been prompt in following up with me about the last few details. The team that came to my home after my husband died was also respectful and courteous. hi my name is lori and i had the misfortune of losing my great grandmother a few weeks ago. in life she wanted everything done right and the exact way she wanted! when my family and i started the arrangements, we dreaded what was to be ahead....but the moment we were greeted at the door by deanna and jay , we felt assured and at ease and was walked and was explained about every step we had to make. although this was not a chore we wanted to do with "grams". we felt that everything she aimed for in life now can be complete in her funeral . everything was beautiful and it all went off without a glitch or problem. thank you "deer creek" and jay and deanna for making "grams" and all of her loved ones say goodbye too each other. read more
