I will always praise Deerfield Bakery as our family has gotten dozens of cakes and treats from them over the years including my sisters wedding cake back in 2018. The buttercream frosting is to die for and the only one I truly love! I was really glad to see that they were still open when I came into down during labor day weekend. Felt odd not seeing the coffee area full of people reading the paper and hanging out, but I know it will come back to normal after this pandemic is over. Will be back again in November! read more

I am new to the gluten free thing and have thus far shied away from baked goods because...well, how could they ever match up to "the real thing," amirite? Well, tonight some friends brought over dessert from Deerfields (mini chocolate cupcakes and an "Out of This World" cheesecake), and I'm here to tell you that they have made gluten free DELICIOUS!! We had to give Deerfields a try after hearing so much about it when we moved to the area. After breakfast with my in-laws, I advocated for a stop here. We would need something to pair with our coffee later, after all. We browsed for a few minutes, taking in all of the beautiful pastries and breads. We each ended up buying a few things. My husband and I got a mini cheesecake tart and a mini key lime pie tart. The key lime pie was the better of the two, largely because the flavor was bold enough to stand up to the dense graham cracker crust. It was tart and flavorful. The cheesecake was fine but the strawberry glaze was overpowering. We all shared a pecan braid, a type of coffee cake. I'm going to have a hard time resisting coming back here every weekend for one of those. The pastry was flaky and buttery; there was a generous amount of pecans on top. The icing complemented the flavors without drowning the pastry in sweetness. My father-in-law also picked up a loaf of raisin challah and left us with a portion of it. My challah expectations are unreasonably high and even I have to admit that this was excellent. The bread itself was the perfect consistency for challah -- pillowy and soft. The raisins were plump and flavorful. I keep stealing slice of it out of the bag, which means I'm definitely going to have to get more. I'll admit that the employees who were working weren't the friendliest or the most welcoming but they got the job done. read more

We've ordered various cakes (delicious German Chocolate and a Chocolate Birthday Cake) from them in the past and have always been pleased. The interior definitely has an old-time, kind of 70's feel to it, which I like, and there are always fresh baked good in abundance around the store. Today I was able to order from them, and pay, over the phone, which, though I would love to be able to order a custom-decorated cake online, is still more convenient than having to drive tot he location to order. They do have a wide variety of cakes available online, but I was not able to locate a way to create a cake of my own, and there didn't seem to be a way to specify particular decorative writing. If this feature is ever made available that would be helpful. I always have a good experience at Deerfields Bakery, and their cakes are always very good and of high quality. read more

I normally don't post reviews, but I will post this one about my stop at Deerfield Bakery yesterday. I had chosen a mix of a dozen doughnuts and danish and stood in line waiting for several minutes while the girl tried to help another customer...she was having a difficult time . The music n the store was loud and I was worried that my dog, who was right outside in the car, might have activated the car alarm as he does if I'm gone too long. She finally got to me and I asked her to ring we up while I stepped away to the door for one moment. I was gone for 10 seconds and when I returned she was gone. I had only gone to the cookie counter to listen!. I waited two minutes and she returned, finally, carrying a large box and cupcakes. She looked at me and said " I will take care of you soon." I walked out. I would imagine that she didn't even understand why. i drove all the way to Tags in Evanston. read more

Deerfields was a family favorite growing up, but after 25+ years, we've all given up on it. We looooved their frosted sugar cookies. However, over the pandemic they stopped making them fresh at the store. Now the cookies are hard as rocks. Literally. We excitedly bought a dozen cookies to take home a few months ago, and when we bit into them, they were hard, and flavorless. Tasted nothing like the soft, and chewy cookies we grew up eating. So we go back a few more times thinking "okay, maybe it was just the batch that was bad that day". nope. about 4 tries later we realized these were now assembly made cookies. that would be fine if the taste was there! But no, now we're just eating frosted hockey pucks. even the frosting was rock solid. Same for the doughnuts. AMAZING cake doughnuts used to be made here. Now? like the cookies, hard, and dry. They spent a ton of money remodeling, and now they have a brand new shop, with much worse product. Even my mother, who grew up on Deerifled Bakery as well, commented how she doesn't remember a recipe change since she started eating there in the 70s. They built years and years and years of goodwill with the community, only to make the worst changes possible. If money was an issue, I'd rather they limit the menu, and only do a few things very well, instead of doing all of it poorly. Who knows, maybe the cakes are still good. But after 25 years for me, and over 40 years for others in my family, we have to say "goodbye" to Deerfields unless they change back to old recipes. read more

Lets be honest, the cakes here taste like crap. They are dry and the frosting sucks. Now if it ended there, I wouldn't even be writing this review. The very large woman is so rude its a joke. Not to mention, her handwriting on the cakes are trash. They look like they are written by a 7 year old. If you go to jewel, you get the same tasting cake with better handwriting. I was here about a month ago and bought a simple cake they had on display and just asked if they could write something for a pregnancy announcement. The cake was very spring like (coral, light green and light pinks). I really am an easy going person so when they asked for preference of the color for the writing I let them pick and the woman said "how about something gender neutral." Perfect. The cake comes out with bright demonic red writing. In what world is that gender neutral? Please tell me? And again, couldn't even read the writing. The one in Buffalo Grove is so much better with people that are actually happy with their job. read more

Honestly, I didn't think I could have a bad cake, especially from a bakery where everything looks so good. We went in to inquire about a custom cake for our daughter's birthday and while we were there bought some cupcakes to try. They look very yummi. When we got home and tried the cupcakes, they were probably the worst things we ever tried. The cake was completely dry and stale. The frosting left much to be desired and tasted a bit moldy. Not sure how long they have been out for, but I never went to a bakery that sold such old goods. The only cake that was passable was the confetti cupcake, and it was not even that great, most local grocery stores sell better cakes. We're glad we tried the cupcakes before placing the order, otherwise we would have had a very disappointing birthday. Avoid this place if you are looking for tasty cakes. read more

I have been a Deerfield bakery lover for 30 years. In September I went in to pay it forward by paying for someone's order that is due to be picked up as my random act of kindness in my son's honor. I was told very callously that is something they don't do. A few days ago my family and I decided to give it one more shot and called to ask if we could pick up donuts curbside. The person that we spoke to said that they could not do curbside pick up but we were welcome to come in the store. When I told her that we did not have masks on us she said that that was OK and we could still come in (a clear violation of the executive order. So sad to see DF bakery deteriorate. Big disappointment. Ordered a chiffon cake, thinking light and airy cake, but their chiffon is like a poundcake, very dense not what my definition is of chiffon. We've been here several times, each to pick out a birthday cake for one of my four kids or pick up a dozen donuts. The cakes and donuts are always tasty and the service is usually solid but not stellar. However, our last visit we were assisted by a young gentleman who was very helpful and seem to express interest in our purchase. Once he learned the cake was for my daughter's birthday, who was with me, he wished her a happy birthday and asked what our plans were. He then offered to write happy birthday on the cake. So for the quality of baked goods I would give four stars but because of the exceptional service we had the last time we visited I give five stars. read more

My cream filled donut was a solid 3.5 stars. I used to be a night shift baker. I made donuts, bagels, muffins, and cookies. I remember the art of making a donut and filling each one by hand. Here it's all handmade. I'm on the hunt for the best cream-filled goody, but I couldn't get there this morning. I realize donuts at the end of the day might not be the best idea. I opted for the chocolate Bavarian cream-filled. It was heavy and filled to the brim, but I wasn't sure what the cream would look like. Would it be dark and chocolate in color like the ones from DD? No, in fact it was very light in color and most likely mixed with cocoa powder. After one bite and a dunk (I'm a dunker), I had to eat this sucker fast because it was loaded and started to fall apart. So, like a glutton I ate super fast and crammed it all in there and savored my obnoxious bites. It was a thinner consistency than I expected...a thinner pudding. Not a real super chocolaty taste, but perhaps if I slowed down I would have experienced it more. Regardless, I'm hyped up on sugar right now and loving it. One totally random thing I have to note is how badly I felt taking one of their large brown boxes for three donuts (the other two were for my kids). It was that or a Styrofoam plate thingy. When I am awoken at 3:44 am by some jack-hole's car alarm and can't get back to sleep, the best use that I can think of for my windfall of early-morning time is to haul out to the bufu suburbs for an apple fritter before heading to the office. If I have to work a full day on only four hours of sleep, starting it with a blast of sucrose seems like fair compensation to me. And whisky too. Actually that seems like a good idea any day, but never mind. This was a very good apple fritter, though the enjoyment-to-drive-time ratio here is somewhat lower than the king of this category, Old Fashioned Donuts (equally bufu in the other direction). The Deerfields fritter features a boatload of apples--more than I've ever seen--plus a perfect level of sweetness, a solid cinnamon flavor, and just a touch of deep-fried savor. Uniquely, it is constructed in a thin, loose spiral. At only $1.12, it is a steal despite the additional ten dollars in gas costs. In short, this apple fritter competes favorably with the best from both the nouveau haute doughnut (aka "honut") shops and the old fashioned bakeries out there. I also tried a coconut and a pumpkin spice doughnut, but they were just okay. I would have grabbed a chocolate bismarck for today's lunch dessert, but my wife likes to tease me about my diabetes, so I abstained this time. read more

I went to a birthday party and had both the chocolate and red velvet (as seen in photo). It was so moist and delicious!! They referred us here, but yesterday when we bought a red velvet in the morning that was in their fridge, to which we asked if it was fresh and said yes, it was so dry and stale. The sliced red velvet cakes that were not refrigerated, on the other hand, were a bit more moist but not as good as the cake made for the party. I'm really really sad about this, as we came all the way from Lincoln Park just to buy their red velvet. I wonder almost if the reason it's dry is because it's been refrigerated? But when I asked for a plastic bag, the blond Hispanic girl commanded that the cake needs to be refrigerated. Oh ok... The cakes were large with very detailed decoration & perfect execution of a theme, this is really well done. However, in all three cases the cake itself and frosting is pretty tasteless. Part of enjoying a cake is how it looks but also, of course, the taste! Duh! My husband I might have found our donut place...Deerfields Bakery. We live in Highwood and have been looking for a local bakery for donuts. You know...you gotta have a go to donut place. We have look, tried, and explored. Tough job. I think we found it in Deerfield. Deerfields is a local shop with a couple locations. Their Deerfield one has decent parking. Easy in. Easy out. You walk in and the smell gets to you. Be careful, it makes you want to buy one of everything. And boy, do they seem to have everything. Even gluten free. They have cakes, Danishes, donuts, crossiant a, cupcakes, cookies, bread, etc. My husband and I start with the simple. He had a cake donut with chocolate and sprinkles. I had a cinnamon and sugar donut. Mmmmmm. I can still remember the deliciousness from hours ago! I snuck out with a chocolate crossiant as well. Well, I don't want to go into too much detail and make you jealous, but it was yum!! Not to mention the size of two hands! Whoa! The only reason they didn't get 5 stars was because the person at the register, literally, did not say one word to me while checking out. Not hi, bye, the total cost. Nothing. I grew up on their fresh donuts that they don't charge an arm and a leg for like some specialty donut shops. The cakes from Deerfield still look good...and they used to taste good too. However, it seems as though that ship has sailed. Now the cakes have too little sponge and way too much frosting. The frosting isn't very good either. The frosting has an oily feel, and an odd aftertaste. The celebration quickly soured with a cake that even the dog wouldn't touch. For many years, Deerfield's Bakery was our "happy place" for birthday cakes, holiday desserts and sweet treats! However, there really won't be any "sugar and spice" in this review. Over the Jewish New Year, I ordered and prepaid for a Frangipane Apple tart. According to the store's web site, this holiday special would feed 8-10 guests. When I arrived to pick up the pastry, I was shocked to see how small it was and immediately realized that we'd never get 7 pieces cut from the tart. The owners were not available, and the shop's new manager agreed that I would need a second dessert. His solution was to sell us a second pastry at a 25 per cent discount. May I add that the Frangipane tarts were dry, doughy, tasteless and short on apple slices. As a former consumer reporter, I did a bit of research and learned that a bakery item 7" in diameter will serve 5-7 guests maximum. The store's new owners have failed to answer my recent calls. Although we enjoy supporting small, local businesses this bakery is now off our list. As for Ford and Adrienne, "Let them eat cake!". read more
