Haven't been to Dee's in well over 15 years, and recently saw online that they renovated. The place definitely looks great and the food is even better than I remembered. You can tell their pasta is homemade, and there's a good selection of different choices for apps, main entrees, and dessert. We got the whipped ricotta honey crostini, pork Milanese and seafood bucatini. Was all delicious. And the olive oil cake is definitely authentic. A BIG SHOUT OUT to our server Nicole. So I came back to celebrate my son and sisters birthday as a party of 10 with my family. Since my last review I've actually come back multiple times to celebrate my son's, friend's and my birthdays as well as had regular dinners. Most of the time it's been a good experience. But this time I came as a much larger party and won't be back, at least not with a large party. Overall the food at this dinner was pretty good and waitress and servers were great. But, I was however extremely disappointed that I had a reservation and had to wait outside with my party (2 were seniors) for 25 minutes bc our table wasn't ready. My sister and parents got there 15 minutes early. The hostess told my sister when she got there it would be 10-15 minutes bc they were "getting our table ready". Understandable, my sister did arrive early. Fine. After about 15 minutes or longer, bc it was already passed our reservation time, I go in and ask the hostess about the table, who rather pointedly was like ummm, I already told another person in your party that we are getting your table ready. I was like oh ok. And she then says it will probably be another 10-15 minutes bc we are still setting up the table. I thought to myself, it takes 20- 30 minutes to set up a table and we aren't in a private room or anything? Mind you she wasn't apologetic at all and a little curt. But after this exchange it just dampened the mood for me. At the next 15 minute mark I asked (3rd time) and a different male host finally tells us it was bc there was another large table who was sitting for a really long time (his words) and wasn't getting up although they paid 20 minutes ago AND he couldn't tell us when the table would be ready. I'm thinking, so you can't politely tell the table that they had another reservation that's been waiting even after they already paid 20 minutes ago? Fine, whatever, but you know how many restaurants I've been to where they have done that to my party when another reservation arrived? We finally get to our table after waiting a little while longer and it was extremely cramped, uncomfortable and we were all squished in. I was so embarrassed that I picked this restaurant with my parents (bc they can be picky) and family for such a special occasion and overall it was so underwhelming, everyone in my party was a little annoyed bc of either the waiting, the exchange, and/or the tight/cramped table. Honestly, the attitude/tone I felt this evening, which I'm sure was unintentional (or at least I hope) was that they just didn't give a sh*t about us (again aside from our waitress and servers). How sad for our party I guess. Would I come back though? Maybe, but I've had varying experiences here over the last 10+ years and not always consistent. I'd give other restaurants in the neighborhood (and there are plenty) a shot first before dining here again. Dee's has gone from very good to fantastic! Dolores provided some of the most attentive, thoughtful knowledgeable & friendly service we've ever had. No glass was allowed to run dry, no request left undone. (9 extra glasses of ice without blinking lol). The Tagliatelle Bolognese (pictured) is generously portioned and delicious. The Hot & Sweet pizza is not to be missed -- it is SO good we make sure to get it one way or another, as an appetizer or main. Other appetizers like the calamari & Burrata are excellent! Strong 4...Before the recent game-changing opening of the seemingly instantly James Beard nominated Tourmaline a block away, this was pretty certainly the definitive best restaurant in Forest Hills, by a comfortable margin. While that may rank as a relatively mid-tier title by NYC standards, as the neighborhood restaurant average is sadly and shockingly low, especially considering its location in the literally center Queens, this is nonetheless a very special neighborhood treasure, befitting it's stalwart status at now over 30 years of age. Classic Italian American with some New American flourishes, the place stays consistent and honors its tradition while simultaneously managing to keep things fresh and staying up with the times. The pizzas are well-executed and make great use of the gorgeous wood burning oven, but for me it's almost impossible to order anything else but my go-to order, one of the house specialties the classic Cavatelli with broccoli raab and some particularly pungent hot Italian sausage. A modern day classic in the cannon, finding decent versions around the city is tougher than one might imagine, particularly in my experiences in this borough. The version here, served like the rest of the offerings in an extremely generous portion that usually yields some delicious leftovers to take home, is a strong contender for the best in the borough title. Also of particular note is the exemplary super-thin and savory chicken parm, served in the previous era in various forms including with spaghetti and broccoli, as well as with risotto, currently served smothered with a spicy vodka sauce and paired with rigatoni. I've only recently became aquatinted with the rich and unctuous dry-aged burger, served simply and unadorned save for American and sharp raw union, on a classic and proper sesame seed bun, it's a stealth under-the radar competitor for the best burger in the hood nod with previous title-holder Dirty-Pierres. The expansive, two-room space, an ideal setting for the many private events and family gatherings that regularly occur here is aptly bright and inviting with the aforementioned pizza oven serving as its centerpiece. I generally sit at the bar which offers ample opportunity to converse with the top-notch staff, just as genial and affable as you would hope to find in such a longtime neighborhood institution, as well as the fellow patrons, who are, more often then not, you guessed it, longtime local resident regulars. read more

Not the best venue for our 25th anniversary since it was so crowded and noisy. But the food and drinks were good, despite being pricey for the neighborhood. What sets this restaurant apart is Shane, the manager, who made us feel very welcome as a same-sex couple celebrating a milestone event. My husband and I travel and fine dine all over the world and Shane stands out as one of the best restaurant managers we have ever met. This is a great place to go to for get togethers and catching up with friends/family. It's walking distance from many homes, and right off the Union Turnpike by Forest Park area. The ambiance is very chill and casual. I forgot to take pictures because I was so hungry and just wanted to dive in when the food came out. =D The Mac and cheese bites were crispy and delicious. The pizza was great, my friend's baby devoured it. I really wanted the pesto chicken pasta dish and did not regret it. I had the Lychee Martini, definitely tasted the lychee and not just alcohol. Dee's has done an amazing renovation since Covid! It's nice and bright which accentuates the hanging art (for sale). The old wood-fired brick pizza oven in front has been retired in place and is now just decorative and taking up space. I will miss leaning against the warm brick wall when waiting for a table in January. It has been replaced by a new ceramic dome oven from Italy in the back of the dining room. A memorable appetizer dish is the Fried Calamari, which are tender and lightly breaded, but the best part is instead of a traditional marinara sauce for dipping, Dee's gives you a spicy tomato coulis that goes really well with the calamari rings. A drawback is that they don't serve my favorite part of the squid, the tentacles. The pizzas are fresh made with a few specialties like the Forest Hills with burrata, prosciutto, arugula and drizzled with aged balsamic. Feel welcome to mix up your own topping combinations. The fresh baked crust is exceptional. The pasta dishes are great also and are pretty substantially sized, so that you won't go home hungry, but you might take home some leftovers. My favorite is the Cavatelli with Hot Sausage and Broccoli Rabe with fresh made pasta. The Penne a La Vodka and Rigatoni & Eggplant are really good as well. If you come for weekend brunch, specials like the Bull Burger will satisfy you with Applewood Smoked Bacon and a Fried Egg. There are also traditional brunch items like waffles and egg dishes. Everything on the regular dinner menu is also available at brunch also, so don't be shy to ask. read more

I am so impressed with my experience at Dee's for my little one's birthday. We reserved half the restaurant for our party and the space was perfect for our event. The manager, Shane was responsive to our inquiries prior to the event and always available during the event. Our server, Dimitri was spectacular and also acted as our decor specialist. It was our first time setting up decorations for a child's birthday and he probably saw we were struggling based on our confused expressions. Dimitri not only provided amazing service but is also a comedian and had our guests laughing the entire time. Please do yourself a favor and request him as your server for your next event. Finally, the food was a hit. My husband and I have dined at Dee's a number of times before reserving the space. The food is consistently great and our guests agreed! We reserved the side of the restaurant with the bar and the cocktails were excellent. The drinks came quickly after ordering and it felt like having our own private bartender. Parking also wasn't an issue because there are plenty of public parking spots around the restaurant. The price for the space and food were reasonable. Came here on a Friday night, seated immediately. Modern decor, tables seem fairly closely packed, but seating is comfortable. Service is friendly, a little overworked, so may take some time for them to check in on you. Food is great. Pizza comes out quickly. The pizza has a nice crust, perfect crunch, with the gritty cornmeal coating on it. I'm ingredients are fresh. The tomatoes sauce could be a bit sweeter, a little too acidic for my taste. Came here last night for an impromptu dinner date with my hubs and so glad we did! I can't believe we've been living in Forest Hills for 9+ years and only tried Dee's for the first time now. We have been missing out! I guess I never bothered to check it out all these years because I'm a hardcore Nick's Pizza fan - but I would say that this place's pizza is different and not really a "compete" with Nick's. Plus they have a bunch of non pizza items on the menu! My husband got the pepperoni pizza and it was delicious- the crust was crunchy but also doughy and just perfect. I got the spaghetti and meatballs and it was GOOD. Also extremely generous portions! We also got the Caesar's salad which was a step up from the typical expectation - loved it! A year or so back, I was invited inside the kitchen of Austin Pizza - my review talked about the quality and proper cooking of the dough, more specifically, the oven - an oven of modest stature yet chock full of technology. So now I'm fixated on ovens - indoor, outdoor and knowing dinner was at Dee's Brick Oven Pizza - I steadied and readied myself as I entered with youthful excitement thinking about the oven. Dees first location - just across the street, a stones throw westward - it was the 90s friend frost on the window panes and brick oven pizza inside, it was new - some adored it, some preferred their standard pizza others remained indifferent, rightly or wrongly this was I. Dees was bustling busy this evening, as it usually is - so I wasn't able to sneak the peek I wanted - I missed viewing the oven - gosh I wanted to see it and the kneading, the pressing the flipping and the fire side slide of the dough to the inside. So - I didn't order the pizza, I needed the background information, I wanted my imagination to take the controls, but the seed was planted for a return. "Let's get a few starters" rebounding quickly from my non pizza new starting point - reading the digital menu on a hockey puck sized screen. Calamari Fritto ($17.00) wasn't the start I'd hoped for - kinda rubbery, more snouts than torsos, spicy aioli just doesn't do it for me with this dish, I'm all day with the marinara here. The Crab Cake ($18.00) A single - I assume wasn't born n bred in the waters of Maryland, no indication as such, yet made a big splash with a little help from our clean, neat, pressed and professional servers that swarmed on delivery and removal with absolutely perfect time intervals - all descriptions properly pronounced and verbalized thoroughly. I loved the unwavering shape of the crab cake I made my first incision, I prefer my crabby patties a bit more toasted brown - I loved the look of the thriving & luxurious arugula salad topping. My 6'6 and 305Lb dining partner and I continued, crushing the dishes with Cavatelli Broccoli Rabe Spicy Sausage ($27.00) up next and polished off in just minutes. Short dense pasta worked well with it's coconspirators of shocked deep green with rough texture changes and the finishing bite of spice was nice as we continued our eating journey. Chicken Milanese con Buratta - double 'R' single 'T'? ($25.00) nicely pounded, egg bath, flour and possibly a double presses panko breadcrumb baptism - the flavor was a bit plain but quite good, perfectly cooked golden brown had me thinking about the crab cake once again. I had thought a lemon zest might have provided a little nice little zip.
