1st Time customer so I'll hold onto the 5th star Unexpectedly came here for Saturday brunch. I ordered the Hemingway eggs Benedict but with scrambled eggs and hollandaise on the side. That hollandaise sauce has a hint of white wine so I really appreciate it stuck with the classic recipe. Perfectly scrambled eggs on top of lightly toasted buttered slices of crusty pillowy baguette. It was served with some salad and dressing drizzled and wedges of perfectly roasted potatoes. The fine details. The regular coffee, to which I added 1 packet of turbinado sugar and a splash of half and half and whole milk, was delicious. It provided me the caffeine fix for the afternoon. Not only did this restaurant satisfy my savory tooth but also my sweet tooth. We ordered the panna cotta topped with macerated mixed berries (blackberries , blueberries, raspberries) and pistachio cheesecake (a layer of sponge cake, whipped cheesecake and pistachio cream). After taking over an old diner space (#2), it remains a destination for some and a consummate neighborhood fixture for most. Sitting on the northwest corner of 40th and Queens Boulevard, it faces the 40th St subway stop on the 7. The new facelift from last year has brightened up the space and modernized the look. There are a lot of highlights on the food front, which starts with their homemade pasta. The ragu pappardelle, wild boar, and lasagna bolognese are as good as advertised, as is the gnocchi, fagottini, ravioli, and cacio e pepe. Any of their pasta specials are worth a look and no place in the neighborhood comes close. The non-pasta options have proven to be just as popular. The pan seared chicken in lemon sauce (pollo al limone) and the pan seared wild salmon (salmone alle erbe) are quality choices. The polpette meatballs are a bit on the saltier side, as is the arancini del giorno and the extremely tasty beef carpaccio. We wanted to check out one of the highest rated joints in Sunnyside, and SoleLuna is a Yelp fave. But...we were very underwhelmed! The place is fine, but only one dish stood out: the signature ravioli stuffed with pear and ricotta. That dish was amazing, with nuanced flavor and a cool yellow orange color that pops out. The rest of the food was meh, nothing special. The mocktail was very good so this might be good for brunch or after work light bites. But for the price ($20-30 per entree) you can do MUCH better. The server was decent but he didn't come by very much and the place was not that crowded. The decor is nice, semi-rustic with wood tables and European accents like Italian food cans and signs. Last Sunday my bestie took me out to our neighborhood restaurant to celebrate. We were greeted by the manager and sat at the table for four since my friend is a semi regular and he knew she always samples half the menu at a time. It was a warm day so the outside extension of the restaurant was open. The tables are covered by a tent like structure so no cold air can penetrate, but the setting sun gave a greenhouse effect which made the atmosphere perfect. The inside of the restaurant is small but has a decent bar and reasonably spaced out tables. The manager and our server were super friendly and cracked jokes with us at times including the whole room. The service was quick and servers were considerate. One couple who came in after us actually left before us. The staff made sure everyone was having a good time - which created a more relaxed environment than in other restaurants. The food is phenomenal. We ordered the soup of the day - which was squash; Granchio (crab cakes); Fagottini Alla Valero (ravioli style pasta with pear and cheese - my absolute favorite dish there); pappardelle ai funghi (past with mushroom sauce); and other things. Then for dessert my friend had Tiramisu and espressp and I had pana cotta dressed with berries. We also had two drinks each! We spent about $150 total before tax and tip. Dishes are $12-$23 each. We were so busy enjoying the food - we actually forgot to take pictures of our pasta! I have been there at least twice in the last year and I can say the quality of food and service is consistent. My daughter in law had a birthday this week, so we met up with them on a shopping trip to Sunnyside. They suggested Soleluna as a longtime favorite spot. We don't often eat Italian, but this turned out to be something special. Lunchtime here was filled with people quietly eating some seriously good food. Honestly the flavor was extremely underwhelming. The seabass has a side of broccoli rabe and even that wasn't good. The only thing that was good was the portion size. Very generous. That little rosemary garnish does a lot, and tasted nice, vegetal towards the end. Definitely handmade pasta. the seafood passta was good, too, with really tender salmon. I asked, and he is from Southern Italy, but his English was good. The inpression that this was authentic Italian came with the wonderful bread. tldr, one of the best Italian restaurants I've been to in NYC, as well as best from a price to quality ratio. Pasta is all self-made, I've eaten here 5-10 times while living in Sunnyside, Queens. Highly recommend. They also have a sister restaurant called Sotto a few blocks down doing pizza. An overall 5 rating because the food is so good and fresh. - Food is great. Portions aren't the largest but enough to be content. The key is that the pasta is made in-house and al dente level is fire - They have nice rotating specials menu that keeps let's you try new things. Occasionally they have black squid ink pasta which is really good - The service can be a bit slow at times but that could be because they have real Italians working there who are still getting used to the culture. We're currently obssessed with this cute italian place. I can't see anything that isn't good. I freaking love the carbonara but apparently they're only serving it for brunch. Lucky for us they have the cacio e pepe which is equally as good. We added some grilled shrimp to it and the shrimp is grilled and generously seasoned which is i wasn't expecting. Heard about this place from my partner, so we decided to check it out since we was gonna be in the area! Had a delicious meal that exceed my expectations! The mushrooms were very well seasoned and covered with a strong aromatic garlic/parmesan flavor. The pappardelle was also al dente. Felt like the mushroom to pasta ratio was excellent! For desserts, the tiramisu was a little sweeter than how I would have liked it. Cream was fresh but wish the espresso flavors were stronger. They had a pretty good Italian wine list. We got lambrusco for the table and the sweet bubbly profile went well with our dishes. There is a good amount of seating (although some of the tables were more length than width).
