From a food standpoint, Kingston is one of the best small cities in the US. But where this historic town stands out is its bakeries. Ulster County is blessed with some of the best bakeries I have ever visited and among those is Deising's. My dad told me about Deising's when I moved to the Hudson Valley, as he spent a lot of time in Kingston as a teenager. When I finally decided to stop in for the first time in 2018, it lived up to the hype. Deising's has two parts to its retail business: a retail bakery and a cafe serving breakfast and lunch. The cafe might have the best breakfast and sandwiches in Kingston, with freshly-baked bread and other baked goods the star of the show. The bakery specializes in breads and cakes. Everything I have had from either the bakery or cafe has been excellent, with the breads among the best I have ever eaten (I have not bought any cakes...yet...though I have been assured they are excellent). My last visit came yesterday afternoon. I was passing through the area and wanted some fresh bread and baked goods. While there wasn't much bread left in the late afternoon, I did obtain the best loaf of rye bread I have ever eaten, while the apple crisp they were selling satisfied the craving I had and then some. They make all their own bread products. Everything is very fresh. Service and other foods are also excellent. I just had lunch there with a large party of people. Choosing a cake type was an easy and good experience, and it tasted even better! We called and made an appointment for a cake tasting to decide what kind of cake we wanted. During the cake tasting we tasted different types of cakes along with different fillings. Everyone was courteous at the bakery! I came here for Sunday breakfast. This may be one of the best diners in Kingston. I didn't get anything from the bakery section, but what they had on display looks bomb. I got two eggs over easy (which was actually done correctly) with corn beef hash, hash browns (delicious), and it came with a choice of toast. Was very delicious and most importantly filling. Service is wonderful here and there's always someone walking around waiting to give you that coffee refill. I probably had my cup refilled about 4-5 times and probably explains why I was jumping off the deep end. Highly recommended over all of the other diners. I apologize for reviewing so late. They deserve all the 5 stars they can get. I used Deisings for my wedding cake a few years ago since I had my wedding towards Hudson Valley. I was looking for a delicious, simple and affordable cake. I did a taste test, which had plenty of cake pieces and the different flavors and frosting to accompany it. There were options to choose from vs having to select one or two flavors like other places for tastings. My husband couldn't make it either so they packed some to go to help, which was so nice. We ended up selected a lemon cake with raspberry filling - more to appease my husbands tastes, less mine, but,... I'll tell you, i dont know if it was the high of the wedding and the mix of booze but it was DELICIOUS. I wish we saved more cake from the wedding. It looked beautiful and was exactly the ombré design we spoke about. They seemed to be a very traditional bakery with classic tall cakes, but I showed a more modern design which they were able to pull off. I've been here several times for breakfast, whenever I am in Kingston visiting friends/family. This seems to be one of the better diners in the area. I've never really had a truly bad experience here. The portions are pretty big for the price. However, this past visit, the waitress seemed a little slow. I ordered the garden omelette with bacon. Maybe it is because of the veggies, there was not a lot of flavor to it and I had to keep peppering it. The home fries that I had were a little burnt. Rainbow cookies (marzipan vs jelly layer) tasted flavorful at first but had a strong and weird chemically bitter aftertaste which seemed to come from the marzipan. This place claims to have won an award for their breakfast, but I'm skeptical about that. Don't get me wrong, the breakfast here is fine, but it is just about average, with nothing really jumping out as being outstanding or "award winning". Their bakery section is different, though. They offer an assortment of designed cakes and novelty items, plus different kinds of cookies. They also carry bread, rolls, muffins, and bagels. Been going here for about 35 years. Used to be a great place. The service has changed recently and not for the better. I keep getting wrong orders and when I explain the order is wrong they try to gaslight me. For example they tried to tell me Italian bread is sliced white bread. When everyone in the tri-state area knows it's a baguette. When taking an order over the phone they'll take your order even if they don't have something. Then when you arrive and get a wrong order they'll tell you they never had what you ordered in stock. At this point if I'm desperate enough to get food there I have to expect a problem and an argument. I used to love this place so much I had them make my wedding cake years ago. I'm not sure what the owner was thinking by restaffing, probably cheap labor. You're better off just going to one of the new hipster places in uptown for food. Nothing lasts forever. read more

Truly a gem! I am having my wedding upstate New York, and because I don't know the area, and the venue I'm being married in is pretty remote, I was worried about finding my cake. But Deising's was perfect. First of all, everyone there is super friendly and helpful, and Peter, one of the main bakers, made the cake tasting / purchasing SO easy. Secondly, they are very reasonably priced. When planning a wedding, you become used ridiculously hearing high price quotes on everything. I was so pleasantly surprised when we got our total, and because of that I was able to get everything I wanted by way of fillings and decorations, etc. Most importantly, everything they make is DELICIOUS! I am so happy with my choice to go with this bakery. The cakes are amazing, they deliver, and even better- they will deliver at the time best suited for the wedding flow that day.
