A lot of people don't know that it is a kill shelter. Please have them spend more money on keeping the animals. Our tax hours should go where we want them. I cant say enough good things about Officer Dang, who responded today to our neighborhood. Animal control had set a humane trap to catch a very large Cane Corso type dog that was roaming the street for over a week. This morning he was in the trap, and although it took some hours to get someone sent out, Officer Dang was so great. Very kind and compassionate with the dog. Thank you again for your help. They have "free dog Fridays" for pet adoptions and that's dope ! They are OVER capacity and I really hated that but it shows they hate turning away the loving animals . I have read some of the previous, more negative, reviews and I can't say I necessarily disagree with some of the issues others have raised. However, I do think the volunteers and workers here are doing the best they can with what they have got. They are extremely overcrowded and do not have the resources they need. I am sure working here has got to be both heartbreaking and exhausting to some extent. I adopted my dog from this shelter a little over a year ago and we had an amazing experience. The volunteer that helped us was so knowledgeable, made us feel like a priority, and lead us in the right direction with what we were looking for. My sweet boy has absolutely changed my life, I am so thankful for this shelter and how they equipped us to have a successful adoption. read more

Our newly adopted dog was given an injection without our permission on 10/23/24. We took her for a heartworm test, and no one shared the results with us before proceeding with the injection. We then found out today the proper protocol was not followed; our dog should have been on 30 days of antibiotics before receiving the injection. She was and continues to be in unnecessary pain. We repeatedly told the vet on 10/23 that our dog had not received antibiotics after he asked us multiple times, AFTER injecting her without asking us first. This has been the worst veterinary care experience I have ever encountered. The vet on 10/23 was incompetent, difficult to understand, and treated us and our dog with zero compassion. I don't understand how he can be allowed to practice here. We did, however, receive better service from the clinic supervisor Kebarri today 10/24. Unfortunately, it is still overall a horrible experience I would wish on no pet or pet owner. DCAS has a veterinarian practicing here who is dangerously incompetent and could harm and cause distress to other pets and pet owners. I don't understand how the vet who attended to us and gave her a heartworm injection, without double checking our dog's status or medical record, could be entrusted with the care of so many of DeKalb's most vulnerable animals. We only had our dog three days; how could we have given her a month's worth of antibiotics? Why did no one catch something so basic? Also, the person doing intake offered no guidance or asked us any questions, nor did the woman who took our dog from our car on 10/23. The only reason any of this was caught was because an adoption coordinator overheard us today at check-in, so this could have continued to go terribly. I am giving two stars instead of one because of the kindness and thorough information given to us today by Kebarri. I hold out hope that he will continue to see our dog's care through properly considering we have to return for more injections in a couple months. I also have empathy for how overwhelmed and short staffed DCAS is, but this was too scary of an experience to not share. read more

Waited in the car for 2 hours "WITH A SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT" to get our dog spayed. They can't even communicate effectively. They took in about 20 animals from the cars but we were left unattended. Hope the surgery goes well, otherwise will follow up with another review. These people suck. SMH!!! read more

Over 400 dogs there I went there to save a dog from the euth list but since someone else was there for the same dog I asked to foster any dog who is dog friendly after about a hour and only seeing 1 dog I was told they don't have any dogs that was a match for me. I would have took literally any dog regardless of size age gender and to tell me out of 400 dogs none of them are dog friendly/ tested round small dogs for me to take home was very disappointing. They even had small dogs but didn't show me any I saw at least 10 in the back area. read more

Walked in after Christmas to adopt a dog that someone else was obviously ill-prepared to care for. When I inquired about a dog and said "the German Shepherd looking dog" I was snapped back at with the snottiest tone and was told "We don't refer to any dog here by breed!" Well then how should I describe the dog? The people working here are actually the worst barrier to these dogs getting adopted and living a happy full life. Did all the right steps. Filled out an online adoption application. Called when they opened and inquired about a specific cat I wanted to adopt. Told he was still available. Explained I was driving from Kennesaw and would come with the purpose of adopting him that afternoon. Took time from work, drove the 30 minute drive, to be told he was in a foster home and not at the facility (shoulder shrugs). Go anywhere but here. As a faithful believer of pet rescue, I only adopt shelter animals. How sad these animals and their fate are in the hands of this group. Unacceptable. read more

I work at a pet store and we constantly get customers complaining about this shelter. We had a customer who was trying to surrender a pet before they moved and Dekalb county animal services gave them a bag of food and told them to leave their dog in a park with the food. They brag about how much funding they receive but reject animals in need leaving them on the streets to reproduce with other stray animals and further expand the stray population. The staff are also completely uneducated and think it's in a large dog's "nature" to want to bite small dogs. I will be reporting this shelter to the state and the news. read more

This is a brand new facility that opened in the summer of 2017 to help hundreds of cats, dogs, and other animals find their new forever home. This facility is filled with dedicated staff, volunteers, and others from the community who are passionate about providing support for the animals who need their care. This place deals with lost animals, unwanted pets, mistreated animals, strays, newly born animals, and more. The staff works extremely hard to handle the overwhelming amount of questions and requests that are placed on them and they do it with a smile, patience, and kindness. Thanks to these uncompassionate arrogant fraudsters, WILL NEVER EVER EVER ADOPT FROM A SHELTER AGAIN. The husband and I by surprise found and fell in love with a little fist bump of joy, a kitten named "Punkin". Husband has never had a kitten before even though we've had cats (that have passed away a few years back) and now that he's over his grief was ready to begin again. We bond with the little furbal l- he goes to sleep on us, he has this cat kid/cat dad vibe going on with the husband and his heart is melting for the little guy, so we decide to get him and give him a home despite the smells of uncleaned cat piss, defecation, and the dog chaos. Workers take an HOUR trying to find out his stat report - they are volunteers so they don't really care. No matter. We fill out the paperwork. It's weird that the paperwork to adopt says LIFELINE and we're at the Dekalb Animal Shelter on Chamblee Tucker with the new buiding. We scan IDs, and get a case worker "counselor". We find out from them bragging that PetCo has donated them a lot of money, so all adoptions are FREE. Great. We start going in the computer to schedule his surgery for FRIDAY since they won't adopt out if he's not fixed, they can't find my Fist Bump (he's literally no bigger than my fist). They ask some other worker wrangling with a dog and she "remembers" that Punkin has been "preadopted" to somebody else earlier and she just didn't put it in the computer. I'm like fuck a pre-adoption, I'm HERE. Let's get my little fist bump. No, they can't hold him, but they holding him on a pre-adoption for a person that may or may not have come in and seen the little guy. And they can't tell you that for "privacy reasons". Then ALL OF A SUDDEN they CLAIM he's already SCHEDULED FOR SURGERY FRIDAY. Apparently, we can have him if he's not picked up Friday night - they close at seven, or maybe Saturday afternoon. No definitive explanation or rationale. Husband is pissed and hurt. He had already started pulling out money to take our little furball home, picking names, and cooing with him. Volunteers don't give a rip, and some come off with racist type vibes. We are still mourning our little fist bump. They don't care, all this casework bullshit like its DCFS with home visits is garbage, and they don't care about the animals. Telling us to keep looking online and acting like it's a trading card set on ebay don't help either. It's just jailhouse points or some rouge yuppie crusade like they care about the planet at the expense of the animals. #EPIC FAIL. Get your buddy from Craigslist or buy one from another state. It's less aggravation than dealing with these wanna be state workers playing judge and jury social worker. read more

Not sure what my taxes are paying for, but apparently they don't consider a possum in your house in the middle of the night an emergency. I found that out AN HOUR AND A HALF after I made the call for them to come, and the man who FINALLY called was rude and abrasive. I adopted a dog last week from them. Within a day she started acting really lethargic and was coughing horribly. I brought her to my vet and they said she has a fever, a double ear infection and has kennel cough. I was not told she was sick. The volunteer there was very nice and I really don't think she knew. But it should have been on her records. read more

After volunteering at many of the local animal control services and shelters, I can tell you first hand that what DeKalb County does everyday is nothing short of miraculous! They will go to the ends of the earth for those animals and try everything in their power to get them out those doors and into a good home. I am constantly impressed by the lengths they go through. They also have a fabulous program called CHARM School that works with the adoptable dogs on manners, leash walking and more. There's not another AC in the area that does anything like it! I went here, initially just wanting to take a look. I'm not a dog person and I've never been. But something was telling me to just take a look. I looked online and saw they had a $20 holiday special and saw a male poodle. When I got there everyone was friendly but the dog had already been adopted. They showed me another small dog, "Barbie" a scraggly looking maltese. I was iffy but put in the adoption papers. To wrap this up, Barbie has changed my life. I can't imagine being without her. The reviews here are hilarious! This isn't a private breeder with genealogically documented blue-ribbon champions. It's an animal control facility. Basically, a state/city run impound. All of the pets here are either strays found on the side of the road, abandoned animals, or give aways. Take your pick! 90% percent of the negative reviews are complaining that they couldn't find an $80.00 Goldendoodle or Shih-Tzu or some other highly unlikely dog. The one common thread is "Why are there so many pit bull mixes?????!!111" This is Animal Control people! If you want to find cheap purebred dogs go to your local shady backyard breeder and support unscrupulous merchants. If you want to save an unwanted dog's life, you come here. A lot of these so-called animal lovers sound like a bunch of elitist snobs. If you want a nice titled dog with known ancestry or a specific purebreed, call your local breed association, breed rescue group or find a breeder on AKC/UKC. However, be prepared to drop a few grand (rightfully, so) on that dog. And in the case of specific breed rescues, be prepared to be put through the ringer AND drop nice coin on that dog. This may include home checks, vet references, waiting lists and even a possible rejection from the rescue fostering the dog. That's not even all of the sorts of hoops a breed-specific adopter may face if they want to adopt from a rescue. Dogs like that aren't usually discarded at animal control. However, if you're patient, you may get lucky and find something atypical. However, if you're not a snobby jerk and *actually* care about rescuing homeless animals come to Dekalb County Animal services and adopt a dog in desperate need of a home. At the most you'll need to fill out an application, maybe wait 7 days and then pay a nominal fee to adopt the dog. That's it! read more

I'm starting to wonder if this place cares about dogs at all. I called about a month ago about dogs crying because they were out in the rain. The owner did put up a dog house but when it's raining really hard the dogs still get wet. The lady that answered at the DeKalb Animal Services said there is nothing they can do if there is a dog house. Move forward to 20 degree weather and the dogs are outside in the dog house. I told her that I read on line that in temperatures that cold the dog should have four walls and that our homeowners association was threatening to call PETA. Officer Pat said she would send someone out there. I told her the dog house was draped with a partial tarp and some other things but I could see a big gap where cold air/wind was getting in. I told her that on the news they said to bring the dogs in. Not to mention that these dogs never leave that pen and the only human contact I see is when the owner cleans the pen which he does daily and brings them food. They do not come out of the dog house while he is there cleaning and or bringing them food. They sit there and look at the food. They don't bark for very long during the night and when they howl in the night, it's just for a few minutes. I wonder if they have on one of the collars that shocks them when they bark. They do bark during the day if they see someone or just sometimes randomly probably out of loneliness and boredom. Officer Past said they would send someone out that day to check on the dogs. I asked her if I could call back to find out the outcome. (No one EVER answers the phone.) This conversation took place on Monday. I have called everyday since then and left a message. I have not received a return call yet. This morning I left a message on the Animal Shelter Customer Service Line. I am contemplating calling the WSBTV or someone. We need better laws in Georgia to protect dogs. These dogs deserve to be out of the freezing cold at the very least. Believe it or not, I'm not really a big dog person but I am a humane person. I've actually never been to an animal control before I went to this one. It seemed reasonably clean, and the cats (the reason why we were there) looked like they were in good health. My fiance and I instantly fell in love with a female tabby, and so decided to take her home. My main concern, however, was the older cat we had at home. Our older cat Nara is very scared of other people, and when she met my sister's siamese over Christmas, she was less than receptive (ie she hissed at him every chance she got). So, of course, I was concerned how well the kitten would be received, if they'd get along, etc. We were getting her expressly because we were afraid our first cat wasn't getting enough attention, so we thought a second cat would be good for her. Well, the people there gave me some line of B.S. about how all cats will eventually get along with each other, blah blah blah. They made it expressly clear they really didn't give a crap whether or not the kitten got along with our first cat. They said that if we felt they weren't getting along, we could bring her back, but they weren't very pleased with the idea, etc. Well, we decided to take the risk and get her anyway. Fortunately, after slowly introducing the two to each other, they've gotten along very well, and Nara is Tati's "mama kitty." However, there were some health issues. Tati had tapeworms (Nara also had tapeworms earlier in the year, so I was extremely .... distressed when I thought I'd exposed her to them again), and on top of that, animal control apparently didn't test her for FIV or feline leukemia. I am just very, very thankful she didn't have either because I would have been angry if I'd exposed our first cat to that as well. Animal control also gave us a "starter kit" that was essentially useless. It appeared water was spilled all over it so all the pages in the booklets were all stuck together. I don't know what they feed the cats at animal control, but they also gave her a baggy of some food which I know they didn't give her there, and she hated it. I just fed her some natural choice, which she adored (although I think I'll soon be switching them to something organic after that pet food debacle in the news), and that was that. So while adopting her was technically less expensive than getting her from one of those foster groups ($82 for a female v. $125 from a foster group like FurKids or Friends of Animals), I'm not sure if it was worth it, except for feeling good that you may have saved an animal from being destroyed. Otherwise, it wasn't really that great of an experience. We love the kitten, just don't like the people there. read more

I'd like to post a response to California Girl. I was the lady who assisted you. First of all, let me say I am so sorry that the dogs got into a fight as you were checking out. I had already left by that time, to pick up my son, and I only heard about this later. As I recall, we first went to the puppy room because you wanted a younger dog - but your son was absolutely overwhelmed by the noise and energy level of these younger dogs. In fact, I believe at that point, you and your family starting heading for the door. There happened to be another volunteer walking an older dog in the hallway. Knowing that an older dog would likely be much calmer and quieter than a younger one, I thought your son might connect with this one, so we suggested (we did not insist) going into into a quiet bonding room to see. The bonding rooms are small, so only your son and husband went inside. I don't know where you went at this time but I'm sorry you got separated from your family - it's a big place and can be confusing. Your son did indeed bond with the older, calmer dog, as you said, and we were so happy to see this. I was trying to be very up front with you about the fact that he was 8 years old, and larger dogs typically don't live past 14-16 years old. Since your son looked to be about 12, I was trying to be encouraging by saying the 8 year old dog still had many good years ahead of him, and that your son would get to spend his teenage years growing up with this dog because the dog would probably live at least until your son went off to college. I'm sorry if that came across the wrong way. As I said, we all regret what happened during the check out process. The staff and volunteers discussed this episode and we have reminded volunteers to be extra careful about bringing dogs into contact with other dogs. While some dogs get along with 90% of other dogs, there is always a chance that they will not like the dog who happens to be walking past them at the moment. Again, I am sorry this happened, and I do hope that your son will find a calm, loving dog who can be his "furever friend". read more

I woke up this morning thinking of the dreadful evening we experienced at the Dekalb Animal Shelter. Someone on here mentioned that there were 95% pit bull mixes and that's a right on accurate description. There is a nonprofit that facilitates animal services there, Life Line. As soon as we walked in a lovely volunteer approached us with friendliness and explained the layout of the facility and when we got to the 1 of the 3 corridors it was very overwhelming. It was excessively loud, smelly, poop and pee everywhere. We didn't know what to expect and it was beyond overwhelming for our son. We first went in the puppy and small dog corridor and there were not a lot of options for young dogs. I was separated from my family when the pushy volunteer was insistent that my husband and son meet a dog in the "bonding room". I had specifically stated prior that we didn't want a dog over 2 years old and this dog was 8. My son was sold on the dog, and spending 30-40 minutes we thought my son and dog would be a good match. My husband and I didn't love the dog but we had just met him. I was thrown off by the lady saying we had maybe 8 years left with the dog and would probably die when our son went off to college. What?!?! Who says that! We proceeded to start the check out process and from that point 3-4 different people during 1/2 hr time span, employees and volunteers made reference to the dog being there the longest term, 7-8 months. I ignored the first time I heard it not knowing really what it meant or I hadn't yet processed it, too much was happening. We waited and waited, my husband filled out the paperwork and the young girl started the process. I heard questions and answers being exchanged between the girl and my husband and joined in. The girl stated the dog had heart worms. We would need to take the dog back several times for treatment and start medication. Why, I thought, the dog had been there for months, why wasn't that treated months ago. Weird. Fine. I asked why the dog been there so long? The girl read us the history, it was lengthy- and I understood the dog was neglected, battered, abused when it arrived and there were a few incidents. There were dog fights, common behavior for dogs stressed and really survival skills kicking in. I was ok because I know this. My son and dog were together, my son was holding the leach which was not an easy task, my son was struggling to hold the leech because the dog was becoming uneasy. Normal I thought. My back was facing them. I was still at the desk. The girl had stated the dog had a mate and another volunteer had said he was ok with other dogs. I had early on stated that it was important for us to have a younger and friendly dog because there are lot of little kids and dogs in our neighborhood. Well, then what happened next was shocking. Another family was picking up their new dog and Our dog started barking and proceeded to attack and bit the other dog. It all happened so fast, I jumped on my husband, I turned my son was frightened and the worker was fast in separating the dogs and our dog was clearly the aggressor. To make it short- we decided to not take the dog. What had happened was a lot! This experience was SO very different from what we had experienced at the SPCA earlier in the week. At SPCA they charge $250, and at the animal shelter, they charge $80. This is attractive. At SPCA they don't have a lot of options either. But they encourage you to keep going back or checking online for your pet. And I think this is what we are going to do. At SPCA they also encourage you to bring your entire family in, you can place a dog on hold for $50. The SPCA is really small and always clean and not as overwhelming. My husband prefers the SPCA and this is what will work for us. I encourage you, the reader to ask questions, and question, do research on the facility and read up on the specific breed of dog, you can never be too informed and visit with the dog more than once. It's a BIG family commitment. I believe in signs and there were a few for us yesterday. Just be diligent. read more

Over the weekend, my dog was attacked by a German Shepherd who bit my dog in the neck and sent him into intensive surgery. I called Dekalb Animal Services to try to report the incident and get it on record, as I was advised by the police. Once I explained the story to the phone rep, she responded that "It's in big dogs' natures to bite small dogs. I have a German Shepherd and he has bitten a small dog before. That doesn't mean he's aggressive, it's just in his nature." She completely diminished the impact of my dog spending all day in the hospital undergoing surgery yesterday from this dog bite. She asked me if I wanted to press charges, and I just said I wasn't sure yet, but I wanted to get the incident on record in case it were to happen again. She told me that in that case, there's nothing wrong with what happened, as that is normal behavior for bigger dogs. I am completely disgusted with my experience with this rep and how she can have zero empathy while being a dog-owner herself. This establishment's website literally lists a phone number to call in the case of dog bites, but BEWARE: they do not plan on doing anything but shaming you if you actually have an incident to report. read more

I have never seen a more dedicated group, both with the staff and the volunteers, in doing their absolute best to care for these beautiful souls. It takes education to understand that we live in an environment where there is an abundance of animals that need homes. These animals are the product of irresponsible pet owners or unforeseen situations but we do know this, that if people would stop purchasing from breeders and focus on rescue groups and shelters this would help all around. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. The stench this place has, will literally haunt me at night. It hits you as soon as you walk into the front door and gets unbearable as you get farther back towards the dogs. I felt like I was walking through hell and back. Multiple dogs to a cage (99% being pit bulls) who looked miserable and sad. The cages were full of pee and feces. Some and the cages with dogs in them weren't even closed fully. It's not like they have people sitting around eating bonbons. Unfortunately, they need more volunteers. Very kind people and a lot of dogs looking for good homes. I got a chance to foster here and everyone was helpful and efficient. From my experience it gets busier during the late afternoon so expect a small wait time. I had a horrible experience with these people. To make the long story short I called this company numerous times for a month to see If my dog was there. I was stationed in Colorado for work and unable to get to the animal shelter. When I was finally able to get to the shelter they informed me that my baby was there and someone had adopted her. I cried in their parking lot until they closed which was for 3 hours. The manager PROMISED me she would get in contact with the new owners to inform them what happened and see If I could get my dog of 8 years back. They never followed up with me or contacted me back. Not sure if they have caller id but when I called they never answered. I even sent an email to the manager and she didn't respond. What happened to us was horrible and it left me empty. read more

My family came home at night to find a baby kitten in our backyard with it's back legs broken. We called 911 to get the after hours animal control officer to respond. Over 2 hours later he finally showed up. By this time the kitten had passed. Then the officer told us that it didn't matter because all they would have done anyways was put the injured kitten down. This county is a joke. This organization is even worse. read more
