The staff here are so helpful and they do amazing work. They not only offer free spay/neuter to Dekalb county residents, but they also offer low cost immunizations and veterinary services. You do not pay what you would at another veterinarian. They genuinely care about your fur babies and it shows. Everyone was kind, polite, and helpful. The space is clean and organized. They get you in and out in an orderly fashion. The spay/neuter clinic is located next door to their adoption space. Do NOT go to the adoption space if you don't have room in your home and heart for another pet, because you will leave with one if you enter those doors. I made an appointment for my dog. When I got there, it was a line out the door. Another girl and I arrived at the same time but she went in before me. When I went inside, I saw everyone in line with a form that they have filled out. I went up to the desk to grab the form and that's when James at the desk stopped me and told me to wait at the end of the line just to get the paper. I said okay and proceeded to go to the back of the line to wait to get a paper to fill out. As I walked to the back of the line, I saw everyone who was waiting in line had the paper filled out. I also noticed the girl that walked in before me already had a paper and was already sitting down, filling it out. I asked her did she walk up there to get it (the same thing I had done) and she said yes, and gave me a paper (there were copies of it behind the one she was filling out) So I went back up to the desk to inform James that he was about to make me wait behind 8+ people just to get a paper. He said everyone waiting in line did not have a paper yet. Mind you James is sitting behind a desk and can't even see everyone in line so how would he know? Everyone in line all had a paper that they've already filled out. So I told him, everyone does have a paper. James then told me that if I continue to be rude, he would ask me to leave. WHAT? Im rude because you're wrong? Mind you I was one of the only black people in there and James is white. I can't help but think it had something to do with race. The girl before me sure did get her paper with no delay from James but when the black woman tries, I have to wait at the back of the line. I definitely left and wont be returning. Do not bring animals here to be adopted. I brought a dog here that we found on the street. The dog was sweet and needed care. Unfortunately I did not have the ability to take the dog home with me. They said they would take good care of it. Three months later I get a call that they are going to put the dog down for behavior issues because he doesnt get along with other dogs. I said, he got along with my dog just fine, and they actually took pictures of it when I was there. I also said, he just needs to be adopted by a family without dogs then. He is fine with people right? I said....Dont do anything...Im coming to get him. But they said I wouldnt be allowed to. I had to email the supervisor because at this point they did not know if it was safe to give me the dog. The dog was fine with me when I dropped him off, why cant I get the dog back? I asked. The lady kept apologizing but there were no answers. This is a kill shelter which they do not tell you. They say, it is only if absolutely necessary, but that is an absolute lie. This is a kill shelter, and their process for determining whether to put an animal down is solely based on their resource determinations. There was absolutely no good reason for this dog to be put down when I was absolutely willing to come get him, when I had already had experience with him, and knew him and his temperament. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE opt to drop off lost animals to no-kill shelters that will actually save their lives. read more

I posted my experience with how disappointed I am with LIFELINE /DeKalb Animal shelter. I will never support them again. They lost my support/volunteering, my friends, my companies and others. They refused to allow me to adopt a cat I wanted unless I was there in person. I begged for 5 hours for me to get there. In those 5 hours he was adopted. Even though I volunteered there, called & emailed first thing in the morning that I would be there by 3pm. They refused me 5 hours. I adopted a cat from Fur Kids and now volunteer at Fur Kids. Much better culture. They even held, are holding, my new pal until I can pick him up next week. Lifeline had no regard or respect for me and the hundreds of volunteer hours. They refused to allow me 5 hours to get there for an adoption I made very clear and begged them for. Go with Fur Kids or the Atlanta Humane Society. They not only are amazing for animals but they respect and value those who adopt there and value their volunteers. read more

Negative zero stars. This place is so unorganized it should be criminal. My cats initial appointment to get spayed was not in the system and we had to reschedule. She gets spayed a few weeks later and was in heat due to their delay (they charge you if they are). A cone was never placed in her and her incision opened that same evening. I called non stop and go no answer. I had to drive up there to get someone to help me. They make me wait two days to be seen. I was given an appointment card only for the front desk to seem confused the day of. A few hours go by and my baby has still not been seen, mind you her wound has been open for about 4 days and is clearly infected. I put my number on her form only for them to contact my neighbor for her follow up discussion and not me. (she originally brought her to her first appointment) I can bet you money my cat has still not been seen and they refuse to answer the phone! Idk how they are in business but what they do to families is criminal. The weaponized incompetence is crazy. I expect a response from this review. Seems to be the only way to get help. Update to my review. The first is before her staple was placed in the Saturday after and the surgery and the second from this morning. Their efforts or so half done and we are headed to the ER because my baby has been through enough due to their negligence. I wish I had read the one-star reviews here before adopting a dog from them. The adoption failed because of misrepresentations in the dog's profile by Lifeline (and questionable fosters) and it is likely to fail again (in spite of my best efforts to rehome him from afar) because, despite providing copious detail about the dog after having him for nearly a year, Lifeline simply revived the old listing after we surrendered. Keep in mind that surrender occurred because of the poor fit (brought about by material misrepresentation) that finally became untenable. When we noticed the old listing had simply been revived and tried to flag the discrepancies, we were totally ignored. I am aware of another completely inaccurate website description, too, so IF you are hellbent upon adopting from this place, opt for a long-term foster to really try things out. DO NOT take the word of anyone public-facing who is affiliated with this place. Moreover, surrender was cruel to the dog: they made us wait for two hours in the cold - long enough for the (already anxious) dog to grow complacent that he was not being surrendered then made him watch us walk away, get in the car, and drive away. They also did not seem to understand that it would have been deeply problematic FOR OUR OTHER, OLDER RESCUED DOG to keep the second dog. Beat me up, emotionally, if you have to - I can understand the mechanics - but I was shocked at how willing they were to be cruel to the dogs involved. I'm an avowed dog person, so I will be rescuing more dogs but I will not have anything to do with this place at all. read more

Lifeline is great! I gave them 4.5 stars because of the location: 1. Location: I wish they had a location near me. With Atlanta traffic it took me almost an hour to get there. So minus half star for location. It's on chambers Tucker Rd off 285, about 5 mins from the exit. 2. Staff: the staff were all friendly. They are true animal lovers and treated my baby with so much love and care. I really appreciated that. They will also make the next vaccine appt for you at check out. Easy Peasy! 3. Price: the prices are so much cheaper than most private vet. They are a non-profit, so please consider donating a few dollars when you go. I got a wellness exam + parvo vaccine + flea/tick meds + heart worm + dewormer meds = $73, I donated $5. I called the local vet and the same exam + meds were quoted roughly $160. 4. Setting: the actual facility is very plain. No fancy decor, but again, I didn't go there for decor. I went there for the price and the service. Overall, I will definitely take my baby to lifeline again for annual check up and vaccines. Due to the drive, I will use the local vet only when needed. read more

I have been doing TNR (trap neuter and release) with the large stray cat population in north Atlanta. I primarily utilize their low cost vet services. Thanks to Lifeline I am able to get hundreds of cats neutered and vaccinated at affordable prices. The staff is consistently great despite the challenges of working with frightened cats in a time sensitive environment. This is a low cost nonprofit service and unfortunately I have noticed other patrons treating the staff disrespectfully. This is not a fancy full service veterinarian service but they get the job done in a professional manner. Patrons need to adjust expectations and be grateful to the great low cost service provided. Mark and I recently fostered a badly injured kitten from Lifeline. His leg was mangled and one paw was sliced off. Ultimately the veterinarian decided to amputate the leg. All veterinarian care was excellent. We fell in love with our foster kitten and adopted him as a permanent member of our family. I was a little apprehensive about having my puppy spayed at a low-cost clinic because I'd always planned to have it done with her vet but we just moved to Atlanta from Indianapolis and I had reason to believe her first heat cycle was coming soon. They were so nice, the facility was clean, and the girl at the front desk was an Indiana native too, that made me feel better for some reason. In any case Winter healed with no complications and was back to her normal self after a few days but we kept her collar on the entire time. I found Lifeline Animal Project during the COVID-19 pandemic while looking for some cats to foster. Lifeline has three locations, CAC on presidential drive, the Fulton location, and the Dekalb location. While I've only been to the CAC location, I'm sure all three are equally as wonderful. It has a huge selection of animals and is only a 20-25 minute drive from the North Atlanta suburbs. I will split this review up into two sections, one for fostering and another for potential adopters. Fostering Lifeline has many programs available to foster cats and dogs short and long term. Signing up to foster is relatively easy in comparison to other programs that have in person classes or extensive testing requirements, and still gives you plenty of information to help you feel well prepared. I've fostered kittens, and undersocialized cat, and done dog for a day all through the CAC location and they have been wonderful each time. You can foster young kittens, kittens with mom, or adult cats with socializing or medical needs. As for dogs, they have multiple short term and long term foster opportunities such as taking a dog out for a day or weekend (dog for a day/weekend warrior) or taking a dog home for months at a time. Even if you only have a weekend or day to foster a dog, it helps decrease their shelter stress, and you can learn all about their personality to write wonderful paragraphs about them in their adoption biography to help them get adopted. And lifeline really makes it so easy by helping you pick out a dog and sending you out with all the supplies you need. Adoption This shelter is one of the bigger ones I've been to, and is both unfortunately and fortunately packed with animals all the time. You'll be sure to find your dream dog or kitty here. When you enter, you'll first see the cat section. The cats are all incredibly friendly and are either in their individual cages or in a room free-roaming with other cats. You're welcome to go into and interact with any of the cats you're interested in adopting, and they are all so sweet so why wouldn't you! Further down the hall and through the double doors is their dog section. I believe you're also able to play with the dogs if you ask a staff member, and staff are always around to help you out or answer any questions you may have. Closing Notes If you have the space in your heart and home I would really recommend fostering or volunteering with lifeline. They are always so busy, the kennels are overflowing and filled to capacity with dogs, and young kittens are always a handful for staff to care for at the shelter. Trash...I don't know what the heck they did to my kitten. She was spayed by them and has been sick very sick, every since. First of all she had a fever of 105.6 My paperwork said to bring her in at ANY time if she had any issues and she's had several issues. So I brought her in over the weekend based off of their times LISTED on my paperwork and their hours. Well, do you know they had the nerve to be closed? I called and everything first. I drove a freaking hour to get there, mind you this is all while my kitten was suffering a deadly fever. When I called during their "actual business hours" the following Monday they had little to no empathy regarding the situation. I don't play those games. Lifeline's poor customer service and low emotional intelligence made our decision to return our rescue dog we got from them even worse than our emotions already were making the experience. Still, they have the contract for Dekalb and Fulton Counties - so you should consider adopting from them. Writing this review to make sure others do not expect a professional, empathetic, nor competent experience as you adopt or otherwise engage with Lifeline. We were very lucky that the foster was willing to take him back. To be clear, the foster was great. They live close and are true dog people. However, the staff and management of Lifeline acted in ways that lacked humanity and made it seem like we were just part of their days to-do list. Not quite the attitude you want in Petcare. I'm prompted to write this review because of the poor handling of our decision to refoster a dog we adopted from them. But, will also share where Lifeline systemically failed us and the animals in their care. In their listings, they claim the breed is unknown. But, then you receive the paperwork and find out they actually do know the breed(s) - it's printed in black & white. For those in apartments - pit bulls & terriers are often not allowed (except Camden). In houses, those breeds are not allowed by many Home Insurance Companies. By Lifeline neglecting to put the breeds in the pet database, we got attached to a great dog that we can't have where we live because of our home insurance policy. Had we known breed, we would've likely become attached to a different dog / breed that we could actually have in our home. They may be doing good work - but their bedside manner is as bad as an SPCA. I'm really not sure why management is cool with being reflected in the way their incompetence is in the awful customer service. We arrived and the Lifeline staff lacked any interest in guiding us through. We felt simply like they were checking boxes off a list. They did not introduce themselves, cater to our emotions of coming to the conclusion, nor even make it clear that our moment to say "good bye" to him was happening. Part of the issue was they handed us 4 pages of paperwork to fill out - paperwork with questions that make you document all the great things and things the pups ultimate owner will need to work with him on. Amidst that, Avery (foster coordinator) took him from us. No moment to say good-bye, no guidance about what's happens next, just gone. Cold. Callous. Heartless. We did see him once more as Avery did not wait for us to leave before handoff back to the foster. Avery walked him by us, he sniffed us, and Avery handed him off to the fosters in front of us. Our final cluster was dropping the 4 pages of paperwork documenting our short but fond experiences with him. This just simply makes me think the management has checked out of actually trying to competently run Lifeline. They seem to hold their standard as "well, we're better than the counties we're doing." Not quite. All this makes me think instead of caring for animals in their charge they're likely giddy for their next fundraiser or award ceremony. Instead, they should be focused on coaching staff like Avery on how to handle the process and psychology of what her job is. Or, at a minimum, paying staff in less need of emotional intelligence training than their current staff needs. Maybe they should spend less time applying for awards and more time actually caring for dogs and cats in their care. Meanwhile, Lifeline has poorly explained that their status as a "no-kill shelter" just means they "RARELY kill the dogs." They say the survival rate on their website is about 93%. But if the dog you surrender could be in the 7% they kill, you really feel awful signing that the dog could be euthanized as a result of you "surrendering" the pup. How is killing 7 out of 100 pups "no kill." Northside Hospital would likely have to say "we are a low mortality hospital" instead of a "no-mortality hospital" if they mortality rate of patients was very low relative to other hospitals. Lifeline claiming "no-kill" is simply false. See other reviews in addition to mine. Reviews that discuss interactions with the staff are often negative. Reviews that stay at the high level of praising their existence - fairly positive. Great mission - terrible execution is the theme across Yelp reviews. Sadly, for the dogs' and cats' sake, I still recommend adopting from Lifeline. You don't want a dog to be in the 7% killed if adopting them over a breeder dog saves their life. I feel bad for the dogs and cats, fosters, and those who face hard decisions to surrender the dogs they adopt. The staff and management of Lifeline could simply be much more emotionally intelligent than they demonstrated. read more

I've been calling AND emailing for over 2 months now to schedule vaccines and neutering appointment(s) for my pet and have yet to receive ANY type of response. When you walk in they tell you they can't help you because you don't have an appointment. Yet they don't answer to make said appointment. The recording says to use ONE method of contact but they don't. Makes no sense. They've taken over management of a lot of the community animal care, but if you ask me and others I know, they haven't done much good. I took my female dog here to get spayed about a week ago. The online reservations were so clutch. Got a quick appointment. They also sent me about four emails on what to prepare for and expect pre and post surgery. They are reasonably priced. The facilities were very clean and the front desk was good at managing the high traffic. I filled out paperwork and was signed in within minutes. A friendly attendant took my dog in and she was so gentle and reassuring. So was the attendant when I came to pick up my pet post surgery. They told me anything I needed to know about care at home and even briefed me on how my dog was during surgery. I'm very pleased and Coco is healing well and fast! read more

07/18/24 - COMPLETE SURGICAL FAILURE - DR. KILGORE KILLED MY DOG ‼ My 11 y.o dog went in healthy for a mass removal on her hip and cherry eye correction. Her pre surgical exam and blood work was fine. She was cleared for surgery! Surgery drop off was at 9 AM. They didn't start surgery until 02:15pm for an extensive surgery which lasted 2 hours. My dog had complications during surgery. They did not give my dog the proper recovery and observation period because they were rushing to close at 5:30/6pm. They acted as if she was clear to go home. She was not even alert or stabilized to walk out the clinic on her on. My dog died later that night at home‼She should have NEVER been sent home in her condition‼ 4 days later and I have yet to hear directly from Dr. Kilgore personally. This was complete incompetence and totally unacceptable professional treatment‼ Pet parents BEWARE and don't let them rush your dogs in-facility recovery time. Lifeline Animal Project oversaw my adoption at Fulton County Animal Services and the process was handling so professionally and compassionately I have to do a review although I have already reviewed the Fulton County Animal Shelter. I dealt with three workers in person (the young lady who let me meet my furrbaby, the young lady who did my pre adoption paperwork and the young lady who handled everything on pick up day. Each one was super nice, super competent and very professional. When I say super nice I mean extremely sweet spirited. I am still in awe of the staff as I have placed a few calls since pick up with questions I forgot to ask etc (ok five calls) and each was responded to promptly and I never felt like a pest. Not sure what they are putting in the water there but eeeerbody can use some. This organization has my forever high five for the great work they do and the great people who execute the work. Over the summer I went to lifeline hoping to find a cat that would be a good companion for 1 year old dog. I ended up adopting a cat named Natsu, now Moon. He was in a room with several unfriendly cats and seemed like he was looking for a friend. Him and my dog became immediate best friends and I couldn't be happier. Update: Even after putting Lifeline in my rearview---after witnessing unimaginable cruelty and illegal conduct---this place is like a curse that I can't shake. One of the patients I brought here is now being seen at another place. Both this new clinic and I are blown away at the complete dearth of medical notes in this patient's file. Typically, medical notes from a vet include information about why the pet is there, the doctor's assessment, treatment plan, and diagnostic results (most often, it's a "SOAP" template). There's none of that in Lifeline's records. There's not even a comprehensive list of their prescriptions. The new clinic called Lifeline for additional information, only to be confronted with the same weird nonsense as the rest of us. Keep in mind, Lifeline has been thoroughly notified that this patient is going to be seen at a new clinic. It's no surprise. It's bad enough that Lifeline lied for months about performing surgery and giving a rabies vaccination to another animal, until I had to tell them I would get a court order (this is all documented in written communications and recordings). It's also bad enough that Lifeline is callous and cruel toward community and "unowned" animals (I have emails with the medical director discussing this in which she acknowledges that their behavior needs to change). But even for "owned" pets who are repeatedly seen for chronic issues and undergo diagnostics, they can't be bothered to document the bare minimum. Run far away. read more

I am so happy with my two sweet babies I adopted through Lifeline. I really appreciate their extensive foster program and all the efforts they have made to reduce euthanasia in Atlanta. Each of my kittens was $65 to adopt which came with their vaccines, their microchips, their spay/neuter, and their first vet visit all included. One of them is currently climbing on my keyboard right now so I've got to keep this brief but I had a great experience with Lifeline. I went to the FCAS location. It's not an easy job the employees take on every day dealing with stressed animals and stressed humans walking through the doors of the clinic or adoption side of the facility. I for one am glad that they are there doing this work and my experience was AMAZING! When it was time for us adopt again I searched the website for 4 months and went to LAP to meet dogs I was curious about. The staff there that day was amazingly patient and kind and never once did we feel rushed or pressured. I finally found a sweet boy that touched my heart deeply that was currently in foster care. Working with Eddie's foster, the LAP foster coordinator, the vets and techs at the clinic, the adoption coordinator and the random passing staff members that were always pleasant we finally have our newest boy. I have adopted sectarian animals from them over the years and I would say the experience hasn't been neither good nor bad until now. About 6 weeks ago I went in and said I wanted to adopt a hard to place cat. After seeing dozens of animals I selected a pair that was supposedly bonded and needed to be adopted together. So I did. Within a week of getting them home the female cats was getting sick. I called their clinic for help. I called 3 times a day for 4 days and no one ever got back to me even when I left messages saying the cat was dying. I finally got hold of the adoption counselor who sent me to a vet clinic that was an hour away. Unfortunately this beautiful animal passed away. I spike with the adoption counselor again and was told to bring the body to them for a necropsy so I could at least know why she died. After calling several times and being given one excuse after another I was finally told no necropsy would be done. So I would have no idea whether she had anything that was contagious to my other cats. Then I was told someone would call me and go over everything that happened. No one called. I was told I would receive ashes from her. I never received the ashes. Then I decided to adopt some beautiful FIV+ kittens as companions for another of my cats but I was told because I LET the previous cat die without doing anything to help her, they would not allow me to adopt again. They adopted a such cat to me without revealing she was sick, no one called me when I was begging for help, they lied about doing a necropolis and then blamed me for her death. And I'm let with a broken heart and no answers. Beware of this place. Understand you are likely to NOT get support and if you end up with an animal that has problems, they will not take responsibly and will blame you. read more

Thanks to these uncompassionate arrogant fraudsters, WILL NEVER EVER EVER ADOPT FROM A SHELTER AGAIN. The husband and I by surprise found and fell in love with a little fist bump of joy, a kitten named "Punkin". Husband has never had a kitten before even though we've had cats (that have passed away a few years back) and now that he's over his grief was ready to begin again. We bond with the little furbal l - he goes to sleep on us, he has this cat kid/cat dad vibe going on with the husband and his heart is melting for the little guy, so we decide to get him and give him a home despite the smells of uncleaned cat piss, defecation, and the dog chaos. Workers take an HOUR trying to find out his stat report - they are volunteers so they don't really care. Granted, this was in the Dekalb Shelter, but it was ran by Lifeline come to find out, so this review is to their incompetence too. No matter. We fill out the paperwork. It's weird that the paperwork to adopt says LIFELINE and we're at the Dekalb Animal Shelter on Chamblee Tucker with the new buiding. We scan IDs, and get a case worker "counselor". We find out from them bragging that PetCo has donated them a lot of money, so all adoptions are FREE. Great. We start going in the computer to schedule his surgery for FRIDAY since they won't adopt out if he's not fixed, they can't find my Fist Bump (he's literally no bigger than my fist). They ask some other worker wrangling with a dog and she "remembers" that Punkin has been "preadopted" to somebody else earlier and she just didn't put it in the computer. I'm like fuck a pre-adoption, I'm HERE. Let's get my little fist bump. No, they can't hold him, but they holding him on a pre-adoption for a person that may or may not have come in and seen the little guy. And they can't tell you that for "privacy reasons". Then ALL OF A SUDDEN they CLAIM he's already SCHEDULED FOR SURGERY FRIDAY. Apparently, we can have him if he's not picked up Friday night - they close at seven, or maybe Saturday afternoon. No definitive explanation or rationale. Husband is pissed and hurt. He had already started pulling out money to take our little furball home, picking names, and cooing with him. Volunteers don't give a rip, and some come off with racist type vibes. We are still mourning our little fist bump. They don't care, all this casework bullshit like its DCFS with home visits is garbage, and they don't care about the animals. Telling us to keep looking online and acting like it's a trading card set on ebay don't help either. It's just jailhouse points or some rouge yuppie crusade like they care about the planet at the expense of the animals. #EPIC FAIL. Get your buddy from Craigslist or buy one from another state. It's less aggravation than dealing with these wanna be state workers playing judge and jury social worker. read more

I adopted a cat from LifeLine Animal Project...the cat ended up being incredibly sick with a possible fatal infection. they advised me to re surrender him back to the shelter, that they would take care of him and if he got bettter i could re adopt him...and if he had the infection that they would keep me updated. I tried calling the next day to see if he was doing any better and they didn't pick up I tried calling the vet that they told me he would be at, they told me they didn't have the cat. This morning, I go to the shelter to find out where the cat was so I could be updated and they told me they put him down. They put him down even after I explicitly stated I have every intention of readopting this cat, that even if he had the disease that i would want him to die at home or atleast be there for him. When I asked why i wasn't a called or kept in the loop, Tracy said "the cat wasn't your property anymore..i got too busy to call". Several of their cats in "the cat room" are sick, probably with the same infectious disease as mine and they don't seem to care. Ps. I caused a scene in the parking lot after they killed my cat. I was heartbroken and angry that Booger had to die alone on a cold table instead of in his favorite blanket surrounded by love. Literally the worst shelter experience of my life. read more

They are always amazing and very accommodating. We have taken out 2 kitties and they have recovered without a hitch. They are always attentive and willing to answer any concerns. read more
