I can't get enough of this place. I try to convince my husband to go at least once a week if I'm lucky. Perfect lunch spot or takeout if your in a rush. Who knew there was a Jewish deli in Clark? Not me. Anyway, once I found it, I had to try it. Walking in it seems to be the typical kosher deli and restaurant. I took a seat and a busboy brought over a menu and asked if I wanted something to drink. He also returned with a glass of water and a plate of pickles and health salad. The waiter took my order and I soon had my appetizer of kishka in front of me. Mmmmmm. I haven't had that in a long time. Soon afterwards my sandwich (corned beef & tongue on rye) came out. The waiter stopped by a couple times checking to see if everything was all right and if I needed anything else. He was attentive but not intrusive. That's good! It's both a store & a restaurant. Delicious food ~ they've been here forever ~ the quality has remained excellent. Large variety of foods. My favorite sandwich for lunch is their whitefish salad on a hard roll ~ comes with 2 pickles. Their Sloppy Joe's are the best around! They make a platter of them with 8 cuts that's great for a small gathering at home ~ but you have to order it in advance. Good counter service ~ they make shiva platters while you wait. It's in the shopping center where the Post Office & Vaccaro's Bakery are, so there's plenty of parking. Now, for the negative... purchases and take out are the best choices; we weren't happy at all with the service for lunch on 3 occasions over the course of 8 months... the last time we ate there was over a year ago ~ maybe things have changed, but we only get take-out now. If the rating was more for the restaurant, I would have given it only 3 stars, but because the food is excellent, I went with a 4. For the food alone, I would have given it 5 stars. The prices are high, but for a special foods place, it's kind of expected and you think "oh well". If the prices were lower, I'd go more often, but I think they have a good base clientele. read more

I just discovered Deli King after 40+ years of residing in New Jersey. I'm a NYC transplant and commuter so I frequent Jewish delis often. I don't think I've ever had a finer pastrami sandwich than at Deli King. It filled my mouth with flavor from the first bite - the perfect Goldilocks compromise between fat and lean. The rye bread was soft and fresh. The sandwich was also half the price of a Katz's DeKalb Market or Second Avenue Deli offering. I have family who have recently moved into the Clark area, so we plan to make regular visits. read more

The Sloppy Joe sandwiches here are incredible.I picked up 5 platters for a party and everyone was saying "Wow, these might be the best sandwich they ever had."One thing about the menu. It says a platter feeds 3/4 people.(Not sure who those 3/4 people are or what they eat ) but it should say more like a platter feeds about 5 people. So I walk into the deli ordering my staple...Chicken cutlet, lettuce, tomato, mayo. And I grab a snapple. First of all, there is so much noise back there and no organization, i'm surprised they got it right. Anyway, when the cashier rings me up, she says $17.31! I told her I only ordered one sandwich to which I was I told my sandwich is $13.50 $13.50 for a chicken cutlet sandwich?!?!?!?!?!?! Anyway, i'm thinking, this much be the most amazing chicken cutlet ever....and I ask if I can sit in the dining room...answer No. Then I ask if I can sit on the tables and chairs in the dining room in the back...answer No. So I proceed to eat in my car. Every once in awhile, usually every month, or two -- usually after I have skipped breakfast -- I get that warm, "Reform Jewish" yearning for a Kosher Deli sandwich. Kosher delis are quickly becoming "few & far between," so my expectations are fairly high. Such was the case during my last visit to Deli King, in Clark, NJ. I have lunched there at least a half dozen times before, so I had come to expect a pretty good sandwich for $10.95 (1 meat) or $13.95 (combo). Wrong. On my last trip to Deli King, on a weekday afternoon at the end of June, that usually predictable taste when you take your first bite of a hot pastrami or corned beef on rye, slathered with spicy brown deli mustard, and a dollop of cole slaw ... was a major letdown. My Corned Beef & Pastrami Combo tasted like it had been sliced from old, leftover hunks of "cb/pastrami rounds" from the ShopRite Deli counter. It lacked the signature juicy, smoky, slightly fatty, peppery pastrami taste; with none of the delightfully stringy finish that normally comes from a halfway decent Jewish Deli sandwich , I don't know why, nor when, this place started to go downhill. I only know that I will likely hesitate before subjecting myself (and my family) to my next overpriced, tasteless sandwich from The Deli King. read more

Very good classic Jewish deli, with all the traditional items prepared well. Best of its type in the area by far.

I don't get what the fuss is about. I tried this place three times now because of the high ratings on yelp and because I like to give a place at least a second shot before making up my mind, but all three times were a disappointment. Cranky people behind the counter, confusing systems and lack of communication (stay/to go), and mediocre food at best. Not to mention way overpriced. The pastrami sandwich is OK, but $12 for a tiny serving without any garnish is not. Coming from NYC, I'm used to places like Katz', that offer both a classic experience and mind-blowing food. How Deli King is so popular is a mystery to me. I could name a few Italian delis in the area that wipe the floor with these guys. read more

My wife and I really enjoyed our corned beef and pastrami sandwiches. We love the fact that the meats are fatty (we hate lean corned beef and pastrami) but melt in your mouth tender. Not impressed. Food was fair. Went there for take-out, placed the order which was a considerable amount including at least two pounds of meats. After the woman had sliced all the meats, and gotten me the assorted sides I asked for about 12 slices of bread and was told they ran out. I questioned what are you giving people in the sit down restaurant, she shrugged. This was 6pm on a Saturday night. Meantime the gentlemen after me had ordered two prepared sandwiches and he was not told that there this was no bread for his sandwiches. I know she was lying. I've bought things here many times so I know what I'm talking about. I know this place. My wife and I like the square knishes. I don't like the round ones. I like the smoked whitefish, especially when the worker behind the counter cuts off the head and tail and gives me just the middle part for $8. Eating in the restaurant is another matter. You can still get a good square knish. The potato pancake is the way they often are in restaurants, kind of hard and greasy but ok, not as good as if you make it yourself from a mix you buy in the supermarket. The stuffed cabbage is pretty good if you don't mind that it is a little sweet. I'd get it again. My wife got a tongue sandwich and hated it, saying it was tough. I've had stuffed derma here and it was awful, something apparently out of a box and heated up or something, Stouffers would do a better job. If you want good stuffed derma go to Harold's or go to New York. All in all the food is pretty good if you know what to avoid, or to put it another way, if you know what you like here. The worst part of the meal was either the tongue or the waitress. The waitress, and we weren't even her table, came over to check in with my wife to see if we were taken care of, my wife said we have been waiting 20 minutes for our food, and the waitress aggressively replies "I'll check the computer." What an irrelevant and rude answer. Who cares if it was exactly 20 minutes? My wife's point was that she was unhappy with the long wait for our food. They should have brought one thing at a time instead of waiting for it all to be done, since we had a mix of different appetizers and one main dish. read more

I just ate here for the first time. I was in the mood for matzoa ball soup l so I stopped by for lunch. The soup was good and my husband enjoyed his pastrami sandwich. They turkey was shaved from a roasted turkey and not the deli stuff you get at the supermarket. The bagel it was on was pretty good. The pastrami was really good and pretty lean to. they give you pickles and pickled vegetables for the table and both were quite tasty. read more
