It's a new year and thank goodness &grain continues to deliver wonderful baked goods and food to the area. I lamented the loss of the "brunch crowd" in my last update and I still stand by that, but I have been happy to see some life returning to the interior of the eatery whenever I have visited. I am a firm believer in Third Spaces for any community, and I believe &grain is an ideal spot for one to adapt into their own Third Space. In addition to their amazing baked goods, &grain continues to serve delicious coffee. Last I checked, they used Stumptown beans which is one of my favorite brands ever. Be warned however, some of their items sell out FAST. Their mini-corn muffins are one of my favorite baked goods ever, but if you don't get there by around 10:15-10:30am they'll all likely be gone. I'm still advocating for the return of the peanut butter/chocolate bread but I may be alone in that. Service is always excellent. The Baristas are friendly and efficient. The kitchen staff is amazingly fast. My orders are always ready before I expect them to be. It's remarkable. &grain rocks. We ordered a $15 breakfast sandwich on ciabatta. Added bacon and caramelized onion. The entire sandwich lacked flavor; couldn't taste eggs, bacon, cheese of bread. The tomato was the only they we tasted. The yogurt parfait needed a lot more honey. Overall not worth the prices. Too many other breakfast spots doing it better for a lot less. read more

What a great place in Garwood. Great food, drinks, ambiance, and customer service. We stopped in here because I had a coupon for being new to Westfield. Kind of like a welcome to the neighborhood packet. We were greeted so nicely by the young girl behind the counter. She made some suggestions and I went with her 1/2 raspberry 1/2 black iced tea which's as a good recommendation. It was very refreshing. For our meals I ordered the harvest turkey club and my man ordered the chipotle chicken sandwich. The sandwiches were gigantic and we ended up taking 1/2 out of each home. The bread my club was made from was sooo good. I ended up taking the sandwich apart because it was too thick not to. I brought that extra bread home as well. My man's sandwich was excellent. He ordered the chipotle Mayo on the side and it was perfect. The young lady told us that their corn muffins are so good and gave us two on the house. She seems so proud of the place that I thought she was an owner. I actually asked her if she was and she said she was just an employee. This cafe supposedly known for bread. But my 5 star is for the kouign-amann. Man is it delicious. Holy cow so flaky and flavorful. I will come back just for these pastry. Loved it so much bought some more to bring back for my wife and kids. While they said it was still good eaten later in the day, it is best eaten fresh. The last time I had such amazing kouign-amann was at b.patisserie in SF. These were really quite comparable. The service ladies were friendly and inside looks cute and clean inside. I have been coming here on and off since it's opened almost ten years ago I wanna say, and more recently with my mom since I moved out. It's always amazing, the food is always fresh and the staff are always amazing as well. I don't typically review places, but after raving to John, the owner, when he was working the counter last week about their unfailingly delicious coffee, I felt derelict in not sharing my opinion more publicly, so: to my tastebuds, the coffee here is simply unbeatable. I like a medium roast, preferably low-acidity Central American bean, and I take milk with it. Understandably, your preference may differ, but I would encourage anyone to try the coffee here. It has a naturally sweet, slightly caramel flavor. At most places, flavor varies with how long the coffee has been sitting on heat. The worst cup I have had at &Grain is still better than the best I have had anywhere else, including what I make at home, even using the same Stumptown Hair Bender blend they use at &Grain. I don't know how they maintain such consistency. Bitterness typically develops the longer brewed coffee is kept on heat. Not my experience here. At any time of day, their coffee is more flavorful than the pour-overs I have had elsewhere. The coffee would have been sufficient to have me writing this review, but I have to say as well, that their croissants, regular and chocolate, have little competition in the area. Most of the croissants I buy at coffee shops have exteriors that, were they ever flaky, have since wilted before reaching me. The contrast between the flaky exterior of &Grain's croissants and their buttery, softly gluteny interiors is simply heaven. And the chocolate in the chocolate croissants is both ample and not too sweet. I was recommending them to a friend who had once worked in a patisserie. The real measure of quality, I was told, would be the plain croissant. Following that direction, my experience went from delightful to sublime. I've gotten sandwiches and salads here over the years and they are good, very good, in fact, but my rating is based upon what I've shared above and the experience of interacting with people working the counter and occasionally those in the kitchen, when one of them steps out. In the exchange I noted above with the owner, I was surprised and delighted by the intensity with which he expressed his commitment to quality. Based on my experience of the coffee and croissants, I shouldn't have been. Still, it was so wonderful to see the energy and enthusiasm he brings to his craft. Not that one more glowing review among so many will bolster business--though I wish good upon all associated with this enterprise--but, if you find yourself one day near the front of a long line with someone holding his phone, showing you this review and asking to cut in line, I hope you will oblige. read more

I was here once before maybe a few years ago and I came for a brunch and it has basic stuff kind of things you would find it like a Panera. I wasn't really feeling any food items when I looked at the menu nothing really popped out to me so I actually ended up getting a it looked really good and fresh. I'm so glad I came in and actually got the corn muffin because it was one of the best ones I've ever had !!!! It has like honey in the middle of it or it's topped with honey and something sweet don't take my word for it being honey but that's what it tasted like to me. Decided to try this place for a breakfast/lunch since it was 11am Place is located under apartments/condos - no parking out front but there is a parking lot in the back with also a back entrance . Place has a cute modern but rustic feel to it . Place was clean Menu is on wall only . Took photos of it and will post. You order at counter . If you Order to sit down - they give you a number to place on the table that chose to sit down at . I ordered a coffee and a sandwich but it seems they only bring you your food . You have to keep an ear out if they call out the drink you order like at a barista . It would be better if they brought everything but it wasn't that big of a deal since I was sitting in the front but it I chose to sit in back dining area- I probably wouldn't have heard them called out my latte. For &grain, you order up front with the cashier and they hand you a number to bring to your table. When you're done with the meal, there's a little trash station at the center of the restaurant where you can bring up your plate/tray when you're done. I always go for the ABLT when I come here and it's absolutely delicious. The bread they use for it has such an incredible buttery taste, they use thickly cut bacon, and the chipotle mayo on the ABLT too is so yummy. The side salad too, while just spring mix really, has such an light yet tangy dressing that I scarf it down every time. Apart from that, it can get somewhat loud and a bit cramped inside. It's a smaller place but they do have a good number of tables. The cashiers were a little bit short with us but nice enough overall. I'll be back again soon for my go-to sandwich! read more

This place is so fantastic and I wish I lived closer! First of all, free parking in the back. Second, the aesthetic is everything. I wish I had a less millennial way of saying that, but it's true. Lastly, thinking about the food makes my mouth water. I ordered the harvest turkey club which was basically Thanksgiving but better. Turkey can be dry but it was super moist and sliced thin. There was also bacon on it, and I now believe bacon should play a bigger role in Thanksgiving dinner. With the crisp lettuce and tomato and cranberry spread (which I wanted more of)... all on top of super thick pan de mie - I was in heaven, and the bread wasn't too much either. I also ordered some sort of raspberry iced tea unsweetened and it was perfect (and I've been meaning to figure out what it was so I could buy it myself). My friend ordered the avocado BLT and a latte, and she thoroughly enjoyed her meal too. Both our meals came with a side salad with a sweet, light dressing on top. I used to come here for lunch all the time a few years ago and I'd always get the panzanella salad with chicken. It quickly became my favorite and in fact was so delicious that even after I moved across the state, I'd still drive 30 minutes to &grain for an occasional lunch. While I was working in the area, I found myself coming back to this cafe at least once a week for lunch. I loved the rustic vibe accompanied with delicious food with healthy options. Getting their sandwiches to-do was one of my favorite things since it cake with a nice side salad which really completes the meal. The bread is baked fresh and acts as such a fantastic foundation for their sandwiches. My favorite was their chicken pesto sandwich. Reasonably priced and amazing food! Went for regular lunch even though it is mostly known for its breakfast items and we were surprisingly pleased! Ordered the panzanella salad for myself and the bf ordered an egg and cheese sandwich on a ciabatta. Salad was PERFECT! It's spring mix greens with sun dried tomatoes, onions, crispy croutons brushed with toasted garlic butter (SO CRISPY), topped with cheese shavings. The dressing is a little sweeter than a balsamic vinaigrette but it went well with the salad so it didn't really bother me.
