Great tamales. If a restaurant only makes 1 thing, it better be good, & Delia's has succeeded!!! My favorite are the bean, jalapeno, & cream cheese. Delicious!! Best when eaten in store. They have a great selection of tamales but not much else... That's not such a bad thing cuz the tamales I had was very tasty. You can't buy just one, you either buy a half dozen or a full dozen (of any one kind). They are pretty small each so a half dozen is perfect. I had the spicy pork and they were great. I only wish that they let you break it up and order six different tamales instead of six of one kind. I would have really wished I could have tasted all the other tamales. Best tamales in the RGV... They are cheap, and better than any fast food restaurant... They are always ready and warm, the green salsa is spicy good, I like to mix it with the red one. My boss took me here while on temporary assisgnment in another Court division. Anyways, they were out of my first choice of tomales because the place is packed from open to close. During lunch, for example, most seats were taken. This is not meant to be a negative, how well the restaurant is received. I ended up getting my second choice, which was absolutely delicious. My boss also got some excellent tamales of a different variety. My only regret is that the salsa bar is for in-service customers only, because the salsas seemed so fresh and delicious. read more

My quest for authentic tamales was satisfied during a visit to McAllen, Texas. I figured that since this town was practically on the Mexican border that I should be able to find semi-authentic tamales here. And with the frequent cross-border traffic between Texas & Mexico, I not only got my fill of authentic Mexican food but found another great tamale source - Delia's Tamales Restaurant. Delia's is a tamale-only restaurant - you won't find burritos or enchiladas here. Besides the borracho beans and the menudo soup only offered on the weekends, Delia's specialty is tamales - and they offer a very comprehensive list. Like the tamales I had from San Antonio, these tamales are the smaller/skinny version, where you are meant to eat at least 2-4 at a time. Ever since the expansion the quality has been neglected and the quantity has increased. I remember when she would sell out of her car trunk and I loved going to work with my mom Saturday's because it meant we would have tamales and they were delicious. I'm sadden to say that this is no longer the case as the seasoning is too much and they're now too greasy. read more

I checked online for the best tamales in town and was sent to this place. The service was top-notch! I am a newbie to tamales so the cashier took all the time with me that was necessary to make my order for a big group. The person I assume was the owner came by and checked on us and made sure we were all enjoying our meal. The tamales were excellent- I'm pretty sure I ate my weight in them! Salsa was fantastic, but go early they run out of the favorites, we had chicken and cream cheese, and pork, pork was good but the chicken and cream cheese made us wish we had ordered a dozen of them.. that's all they have is tamales and menuda certain days, but so glad we drove out to it, can't wait for the one closer to us to get open, I can see this will be a favorite stop.. the sweet tea was soured but they replaced it for us, no problem. . I gave Delia a lot of chances to prove her tamales. But, having lived in the country where the tamal originated, I can sadly, but honestly say it's apparent the deprived population of the Rio Grande Valley have not experienced tamales of their Mexican primos y ancestros. Now that I've given Delia's tamales a number of opportunities to prove they are laudable, I can fairly say that Delia's tamales are OVER-RATED, UNAUTHENTIC, & contain MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE. Delia found a great home in the Valley for her tamales. Delia's tamales would not make it in Mexico nor would they be successful fare in the place of my birth and home to authentic Mexican taquerias & tamal stands owned by real, Spanish-speaking, Mexican immigrants!!!! Delia's tamales are a far cry from the variety of Mexican tamales I know. BTW: La Michoancana sells fresh-made tamales far superior to Delia's drek. Since folks with whom I work were extolling Delia's tamales, I sampled my first Delia tamal when a colleague brought a dozen to work. I was not impressed, but attributed the pedestrian flavor to a lack of freshness. Since then I've sampled many more brought by colleagues & the experience has been the same. One day while driving on 495 Pharr, I noticed a Delia's Restaurants and pulled in- hoping the fresh tamales would change my mind. I walked in (not friendly& welcoming was anyone to this "bolilla"); I looked up at the menus above the counter & read the list that included simple chicken & pork tamales and a tamal described as pork wrapped in a banana leaf. Since most of the voices I was hearing were speaking Espanglish, I made my request to the 18-20ish-year-old counter attendant (who looked down his broad nose in the center of his plump & hairless, round face), "quisiera que me da una docena de tamal de puerco" (I should like that you give me a dozen pork tamales). He looked at me as if I had 2 heads.Then I asked the reluctant counter attendant if the banana leaf pork tamal contained cochinita pibil (pork adobado) in fresh corn masa (a standard in Mexico). He looked seriously askance at the interloping bolilla & answered in an annoyed tone, as if to educate me, "no(stupid bolilla) it's a pork tamal in a banana leaf". (Oh thank you, most wise one). I took my dozen pork tamales & a big pork-banana-leaf-wrapped tamal; paid up; & got the heck out of there as fast as I could. Bad vibe, all around. I was famished so I opened up the banana leaf-wrapped tamal as soon as I got comfortable in my car. Yep, it contained adobado pork, but in a masa prepared from dry corn & wheat flours. The pork mixture inside was trying to be pibil-like. My mouth burned & puckered from MSG. I couldn't eat it. I threw it out for the birds. I opened the pack of pork tamales & took a bite of one. It was no better than those Delia's tamales I was offered by my work colleagues. I took the remaining tamales to work the next day for my Valley colleagues to enjoy. Unfortunately, I will never find reason to return to this sub-par establishment where I was treated soon rudely & summarily disappointed, as Delia's fell far short of expectations. read more

I was hesitant to go here but I read the reviews and decided I'd give it a try. They were close to closing time so they didn't have all flavors available but I found one I thought I might like and ordered the chicken and cheese and boy was I so glad that I did!! This remind me of the tamales my Tia makes and those are my all time favorite. So glad I stopped here. I'm definitely thinking about stoping again to take some home with me. read more

Oh gracious me! I didn't think I'd just on this bandwagon of giving Delia's 5 stars, but I can't give it anything less. I came because this place had the most reviews in McAllen - a grand total of 15! I came here right before I hopped on the plane. I don't know when the next time I'd make it to McAllen, so I went a little crazy and ordered a total of 5 & 1/2 dozen tamales. Originally I ordered 3 & 1/2, but then I tried it and liked it so much I went right back and ordered 2 more dozen. In total I got 2 doz spicy pork, 1 doz chicken, 1 doz spicy chicken, 1/2 doz spicy chicken/cheese, 1/2 doz jalapeno/cheese, & 1/2 doz sweet tamales. My favorite would have to be the spicy pork. The ones with cheese were good, too, but I couldn't eat that many since the cheese was a little bit overwhelming. The sweet tamales were good - different than anything I've ever had. I came back to LA and shared some with my neighbors (who have never had tamales) and they loved it. Go, Delias! I might have to come back to South Texas for you... or I could probably get them delivered. =) read more

The best Tamales ever! The chicken and cheese are the best. Chicken and cream cheese in a tamale, heaven! The ratio between masa and meat is perfect. There is nothing worse than a tamale with too much masa. Delia's has the perfect ratio down to a science in all tamales served. As far as tamales are concerned Delia's is the place to go for the best. The only tamales that i've had that are better than this are the homemade ones my mom used to make.
