We had passed by De lillo Pastry shop the first time. The long line of people stretching outside the shop intrigued us. "Should we go in", I asked? "Seems like a madhouse in there." An elderly lady folding a stroller agreed with us, as she debated the same. Frank was determined to pack in as much as possible into the evening and so pushed the door open. Inside the shop we realized that the line was due to the people who were getting the house gelato located near the entrance of the pastry shop, an operational bottleneck. We walked in and sidestepped the people looking for ice cream. As we surveyed the display of pastries (napoleans, éclairs, tarts, custard filled babas, etc.), nothing really captured our fancy. Realizing that it might be due to the consumption of desserts at two different pastry shops in the past few hours, we decided instead in favor of pizza and to forget about dessert. Well, not really. I had merely filed De Lillo away in my mind. And so, after dinner when I suggested that we go back to De Lillo, Ms. Piggie was somewhat aghast. Wait! You're not really serious are you? I was, as she realized. But, then I've been raised with the philosophy of "no meal's complete until dessert" - and technically dessert before the meal, doesn't count. :) As we entered the pastry shop again, we saw many references inside to being the highest rated pastry shop on Zagat. Frankly, I don't remember seeing as many signs inside a shop as we did at De Lillo's! As we perused the selection again, I decided to try the cannoli and compare them to the day's other two options (lending some structure of the dessert expedition). Additionally, I asked the server to help me with a few cookies, purely for research. "It's amusing how you order desserts", Ms. Piggie laughed, "Give me half a pound of this, another pound of that, a pound of those". 'Tis true. I do my bit to stimulate the economy. The cannoli was pre-filled. However, the shell had not become soggy and retained its crispiness. Still, it paled in comparison to the cannoli at Madonia for the filling simply wasn't as memorable. Of the cookies I brought home I liked the Rainbow cookie (layered marzipan cookie covered in chocolate and filled with raspberry marmalade) which was softer and more moist (much that I hate the use of the word in a culinary context) than the Tri-color cookie, the sliced Amaretti (almond paste cookie covered in almonds), and the Chocolate Almond bar but not so much the Savoiardi (cinnamon and vanilla flavored meringue biscotti), Anginetti (lemon flavored biscotti covered in icing), and the Carcagnoli (chocolate hazelnut meringue biscotti). I've often pondered over the reason why, given their obvious skill and craft, Italian bakeries have struggled to get their due respect for the complexity and diversity in offering. My theory is that it's all in the name. Seriously, try pronouncing Savoiardi, Anginetti, and Carcagnoli in quick succession. Now, say: Sfogliatella, Sacrapantina, Zabaglione. Compare this with: Oreo, cupcake, brownie, pie, fro-yo... Capice? Shakespeare was wrong about "What's in a name?" Branding is everything :) read more

Let me preface by saying: I love their canoli. It is my favorite around this part of little Italy. And I was going to give them 5 stars. Unfortunately, I can't agree with their business tactics. I have been charged 1.00, 1.25, and even 2.00 for their mini canoli. I asked them about that, and the worker told me it depends on the time of day. I don't know how much of this is true versus how much I look like a tourist, but I am working out here for a month and don't appreciate it at all. Like many of the reviewers on here, I'm a Fordham grad, and thus had a solid four years to sample every cannoli on Arthur Ave. Unlike many of the reviewers here, I conducted similar research project on Mulberry Street. After completing this exhaustive cannoli research, I can say with absolute certainty that the offerings in Manhattan come nowhere near those on Arthur Ave in terms of quality and authenticity, and that De Lillo's stands out on Arthur Ave, where the cannoli is admittedly excellent across the board. De Lillo's offers an number of fantastic desserts, from the fruit topped cheesecake (very dense, obviously a ricotta cheesecake) to the cookies (the chocolate-filled moon-shaped ones are my favorite). Still, many of these victuals are available at other Italian bakeries, and everyone has their loyalties. However, there is one item at De Lillo's that I have never found at any other establishment, and that is the chocolate cannoli. Many other bakeries dip the shell in chocolate, and/or fill the shell with a fluffy, mousse-like chocolate substance that in no way resembles a traditional ricotta cannoli filling. It hurts me that these bakeries try to pull a fast one on the public, many of whom might not realize that this overly sweet confection is an insult to Italian desserts. (It hurts me even more that a fellow reviewer mistakenly tagged De Lillo's cannoli as inauthentic due to the density of its ricotta filling, when just the opposite is true). But anyway. Unlike the aforementioned imposters, De Lillo's takes the honest route with its chocolate cannoli, infusing the delicious ricotta filling with chocolate so that chocoholics like myself can experience the distinctive tang of a truly good, traditional ricotta while taking the edge off the craving. This simply doesn't exist anywhere else, and is 100% worth the trip up to the Bronx. De Lillo's closes at 8pm most nights, so grab an early dinner at Dominick's, Rigoletto's, or Zero Otto Nove and stop on by. The staff has never been anything but incredibly friendly, and the small space is very conducive to eavesdropping on your neighbor's conversation. read more

This is a nice little Italian cafe near Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. It's a great place to sit down with a coffee or cappucino with some Italian pastries. There is ample seating inside as well as outdoor seating - great on a nice, summer day. Our first time on Arthur Ave we stopped in here after a fantastic dinner at a nearby restaurant. First impressions were excellent... Clean and bright,lots of seating, tables outside, and cases and cases of exactly what we were there for. They did not disappoint. Got a coffee and a latte... Both very good. They prepared them with the cream/sugar for us. It was late and so they were out of a few things (to be expected). We had the chocolate cannoli, lobster tail, rainbow cookies, and some amazing cookie that the barista recommend. All fresh and flavorful and frankly just perfection . We sat and had bites of everything and I will most likely get up in the middle of the night to finish those treats off. As an aside I read a few reviews that said the service was not great here. I did not find that to be true. The girl that waited on me was sweet and helpful. The barista chatted with me as he made my latte and they even warmed our cookie for us because they said it would be better that way. Will definitely go back on our next trip. A gem!! read more

I came here after eating a moundful of food at an Italian restaurant nearby and trying the awesome mozzarella next door. And I can't stop thinking about the sesame cookie!!! If it hadn't been for the friendly staff allowing me to sample a cookie for free, I would have never tasted such a glorious, dreamy cookie. If you like those Asian sesame encrusted desserts but also appreciate Italian sweets, this is the cookie for you. In fact, this is the best original cookie I ever ate!! For only $12, you get a pound of high quality, amazing cookies. Believe me, you'd want to order two pounds the next time around because as the staff said, it tastes just as good five days later or even up to two to three weeks in a air tight container. By the way, if you're wondering about the cannoli, they offer it in two sizes, small and large and in two flavors, original and chocolate. Considering how I ate it three hours later, the tube shaped shells were still pretty crunchy and the creams tasted fresh. In 2015 this place was pretty good. Found one of the better sfogliatelle around. Yesterday it was overly greasy, and just terrible. 3 bucks down the drain. The other cookies - at a crazy $15 a pound - artificial tasting and just so bad they couldn't be eaten. First of all, to that great mass of Bronx-bound humanity familiar with Don Delillo and his background, yes, this is his parents' bakery and, according to the cashier, it's still in the family and no, he you won't run into him if you stop by (he hasn't been since his parents died, I'm told), but you might stop by if you're already in the area. Luckily, the De Lillo Pastry Shop (not sure why they spell it differently) is unlike a Delillo novel in that it doesn't make you feel like a zombie consumer in a paranoid, death worshipping society. The sentences on the menu are generally confined to one line and make no references to funerary rituals. And when you bite into the amaretti, you don't feel like you're not quite understanding what the baker has to say, possibly because his message is too complex to be conveyed with almond paste, vanilla extract, and a container of Crisco. The similarities disappoint more than the differences: who cares if Mao II's plot was somewhat loose and insubstantial, but imbue those qualities in taralli, and you've got a bit of a disaster. Sure, it's cool that the Body Artist is as empty as it is beautiful, but you want your cannoli to have some tasty filling. And no one minds that Cosmopolis is a rip-off of Ulysses, but when your gelato just makes you think of how great some other gelato you once had was, things get a bit problematic. And, for some reason, they had two TVs and a radio on, all at the same time. White noise, anyone? I guess the bottom line is this: it's cool to come here and bask, if you're into that, but there's got to be better places to spend your time and money. For example, I hear there's a Pynchon's Pizzeria down the block. read more

I visited this iconic and beloved pastry shop last weekend to purchase some traditional Italian pastries , we ate them at home a few hours after the purchase just to find a bug disappointment. They were mostly stale, no flavors , it felt like we just purchased 6 pieces of "anything". I am sad to have to write this review, as an Italian American I am very proud of my heritage and know our cuisine very well. I really hope that the folks running thus famous pastry shop change course and realize that reputation changes really quickly in today's digital world but more than that, I hope they get back to producing Italian pastries that one can be proud of. This is another of Arthur Ave's mediocre pastry shops. Nothing is that bad, but nothing that good either. From cookies to cappuccino, every time I get something from here I'm underwhelmed. The best you can do is get a cannoli from Madonia, and a cappuccino from Cafe al Mercato. But steer clear of the pastry shops, and if they're your thing than take a trip out to Brooklyn. The cannolis, eclairs and Napoleans are to die for. I was directed here by a nice little old Italian lady who firmly insisted the best cannolis could be found in this narrow space. They sell so many they don't fill them in front of you-but it doesn't matter, these cannolis still crunch since they haven't been sitting around. If you bring the giant, submarine-sized eclairs to a housewarming party you will be the hero. If you keep them to yourself you will be the greediest, naughtiest (but happiest) little piggy ever. A sweet little cafe. The treats are tasty, and there is plenty of seating both outdoors and in--which is hard to come by in NYC. The coffee wasn't the best I've ever had, but the plentiful seating (where I can study guilt-free) makes up for it in my mind. If you're in the Arthur Avenue area Delillo is a perfectly fine place to stop for a cup of coffee and something 'sweet'. I suspect that many people visit for old times sake. Having said that, their baking is just average. e.g. cookies that should be made with butter are made with shortening. The other main issue, and this goes for the other Italian bakeries in the area, is that product sits on the shelves for days getting stale. They need to bake for the days business. By the end of the day the cases should be empty. For superlative Italian pastry and cookies try one of the Sant Ambroeus locations in Manhattan. read more

I never leave Arthur avenue without stopping at De Lillo's. It is in the blood. Pops used to go there on Saturday mornings some 40+ years ago and I go there too. Consistently great., they are the real deal , run by Italians for everyone to enjoy. The sfogliatelle are always, fresh , crisp and flavorful. Decently good pastry shop with outdoor seating in the Bronx's Little Italy. I had a cannoli, the husband had hazelnut gelato, and our dog had a mini creampuff. Everything was good (but I've had better cannoli, sorry). Our iced cappuccinos were good, too. We had a relaxing time. Service was a bit spotty which was surprising because it wasn't very busy. We also got biscotti to go and we got some other stuff too. I mean, we had a long drive down the Jersey Turnpike to the airport the next day and if the car broke down, I sure didn't want to starve to death. The workers are nice, the desserts are in bright, clean display cases, and the cannoli and biscotti and whatever else we got are great. Stop in here after a big dinner.
