Dr Dell did surgery on my right eye. He is inconsiderate in seeing patients at the designated time making people wait 30-45 minutes. He did surgery on my eye. The results were great initially. Then he told me he needed to use a laser on it for a spot that I didn't see. He damaged the epiretinal membrane and another surgery is required for clear not muddy vision. I am not planning to have it because I am at risk of macular degeneration and there is more risk with a second surgery. The doctor that checked me for glasses said surgery for a damaged epi-retinal membrane is the most common eye surgery in Austin. Don't go to this man! read more

Was told to come in 30 min early, I did, I was his 3rd pt. He, Dr McSpradden, comes in 30 min late, appt was at 930 he came in at 954, never apologizes. ​His time is valuable but mines not? Hes condescending and talks over me. He never really listened to what I was describing. Pain with mobility issue. He answers nah not what you think it is, but your ankles are weak, here are some stretches and a steroid come back in 2 weeks. As I was leaving I go please send RX to HEB, front desk absolutely. 2 days later I get a call from Seton Home Delivary RX wondering why they got my rx. Again the communication is top notch. I'd like to know if this is Setons new gig, send them home with papers with stretches and then lets get a second copay and charge the insurance again..this is 2nd time this has happened. Where does Seton get this doctors they are like robots. Are the Dr's getting kick backs for sending you to pain management without knowing whats causing the pain? Cunningham was worthless. Terrible communication. Did not help me at all with my dry eye. When I left the last time, I had no future appointments scheduled or suggested. No plan of treatment. Very little information other than yes I indeed have dry eye. I had great hopes, seeing as how the name Dell was so respected. I don't know what his problem is. I tried very hard to find out what to do. He did "suggest" I could try IPL. But really did nothing to make me think that might help. Terrible experience!! Went there for my son's Cross linking surgery. We were told that they are doing a trial on a new method and it wouldn't cost us anything and told us he was able to join the trial. The day we get there for the scheduled procedure, we are then told no he does not qualify and it's going to cost 8000. They lied to us to get us to return. Exam cost without insurance was DOUBLE the cost at other places. Wish I had shopped around instead of finding this out afterwards as my interactions with them got progressively worse. Then knowing you don't have insurance, they want $25 for medical records vie email for one visit because the law allows them to charge that so why not squeeze you for more? TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS for an email on the result of ONE EXAM. I don't even make $25 an hour! My lunch never even costs me $25. How did Texas come up with that as a reasonable fee for every greedy physician to legally charge??!! The staff has been extremely rude and condescending to me. One even made a sarcastic remark to me over phone when I asked a question about alternative meds saying why don't I just google it myself. Like WTF did you just say to me after I paid you guys $450???!!! There is never a reason to speak like that to a patient, just never. I was also almost in an accident on way home from exam as they told me it was okay to drive home after eyes were dilated as needed to do the exam. I was never told in advance to come with a plan for a a ride home to be safer due to the woozy feeling you get trying to drive with dilated eyes. This was careless and reckless. I was left with samples to use, but never told they are like walking around with diamonds and to be extra careful keeping track of the tiny bottles because the meds are soooo expensive. I was never told that maybe before starting treatment I should wait until I have glasses so I can avoid wearing my lenses. I was never told not to put drops in wearing lenses. I wound up pretty much wasting the precious samples and cannot seeing paying hundreds to thousands for the RX. I was not advised other options to the unaffordable treatment so now I'm left just so far wasting $450 to find out what I already could tell - that I have dry eye problem. Then to be charged $25 more just to have a record on file to keep with me until I can figure something else out? UGH. Please call around other places as I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about - the staff was extremely obnoxious to me just about every time I called. read more

I had PRK done 2 years ago with DLC. TLDR; very happy with my experience. LASIK is a big deal. There is always a small but real risk. So it makes sense to use the best people with the best technology to minimize those risks. I felt most comfortable with Dell Laser Consultants. Overall, I felt they were the most serious about making sure I would be a good candidate. Also, Dr. Dell suggested that PRK might be slightly better for me after a couple decades due to my history of slight astigmatism. Dr. Dell was thinking about my eye health in the long run. I got the impression that other places were less likely to suggest PRK even when it might be justified because the recovery period is longer and less comfortable than LASIK - so patients might be more likely to leave negative reviews (unfairly - just because it can be uncomfortable at times). Maybe that is unfair to other places. That's just the vibe I got. The surgery was very successful. I now have at least 20/20 vision. Interestingly, I have better night vision than I ever remember having. Downsides? Just slightly drier eyes, so I have to put some gel in my eyes at night. Maybe not everyone has such a good outcome from the surgery, but I like to think that choosing Dell was one factor in this. read more

Went for dry eye treatment. Did the eye drops as prescribed, which resulted in no improvement. Went to Jackman optometrist for results.

Staff is friendly and helpful. Very efficient! I always felt they cared about me. Surgery was painless. Post-op visits were thorough. The only problem during the entire process was when Lovia have me really wrong driving instructions which took me west on 2222, way north on Mopac on my first pre-op visit, but I was able to find my way on time. I had cataract surgery with Dr. Dell in 2021 and am disappointed with the experience and the lifetime effects of his mixed-lens recommendation. Dr. Dell suggested the best course of action was to have a different type of lens placed in each eye, so that one eye would see better up close and the other improved vision further away, even though my vision was essentially the same in each eye. I can attest to the complications and discomfort of this approach. Reading and working on a screen is very uncomfortable and visually challenging, requiring eyeglasses with significantly different strengths in each lens. One side of the glasses so so much heavier and thicker, it's almost absurd. Even wearing glasses to correct this issue, my eyes feel more strained than ever before. The experience of his "care" was cold and robotic, and considering this was back in 2021, it's hard to feel confident that my best interests were the motivating factor in his recommendation. Talk to many providers if you're in the market for eye services and avoid being a test subject at Dell Laser. read more

PanOptix Toric lens. if you are considering cataract surgery please look no further than Dr Steven Dell. I have an astigmatism and he said this was the best lens for me. He and his staff patiently and throughly answered my questions. I was pretty jittery, after all I only have one pair of eyes. He was very clear about the small chance of halo's. Not everyone has them, but every person is different. He and his staff were up front with what to expect and the time line for recovery, so there were no surprises. I am less than two weeks out on the first eye and less than a week after the second eye. I am ecstatic. it takes a good 30 days for the most dramatic results to occur and 90 days to 6 months for a full healing. Be patient with the process. This is my take. I really tried to eat right the two weeks before and after. Low or no carbs to keep inflammation low. I also took supplements that are shown to be good for the eyes. 2 to 3 liter's of water a day depending on your weight. Dr Steven Dell, you are a rock star! read more

I specifically asked to see Dr. Dell and was confirmed as seeing this provider over the phone. I regret having surgery done by Dr. Dell and would never allow to be seen by Dr. Cunningham again. THINK BEFORE YOU DO THIS. I had lens replacement and should have done a better job of weighing the risks to the benefit. Soon after surgery I experienced retina detachment and now (after needing additional surgery by a specialist) my vision will forever be compromised in that eye. In my case I didn't NEED to have lens replacement surgery but was told it would eliminate my need for glasses. In retrospect, I should have realized that doing this was comparable to having cosmetic surgery in which case I would have passed, but, for me, the way it was all presented, I felt I was accepting medical treatment, and unfortunately accepted the doctor's advice. read more

I came here at the recommendation of my optometrist in 2021 after consistently having high eye pressure during routine eye exams. After a few test-filled appointments at Dell Laser Consultants, Dr. Varu wrote me a prescription for eye drops used to treat glaucoma. I left that appointment not really clear on if I was actually diagnosed with glaucoma, which was a little distressing to say the least. When I came back the next time, I asked her what she was diagnosing me with. She said I had "pre-glaucoma," so I started diligently taking my eye drops every night. I returned to DLC for a follow-up appointment many months later and saw Dr. Cunningham because Dr. Varu was out. After reviewing my file, he told me that he disagreed with Dr. Varu and that there was no way I had glaucoma at my age. He said I could stop taking the eye drops. How confusing to have two doctors disagree on a pretty important diagnosis, and there was no "Let me deliberate with her" or anything, just "She's wrong." It made me not trust the opinion of anyone at DLC. Both doctors really lacked in the patient communication department. The whole experience at DLC put me through an emotional rollercoaster, and I'm happy to never go back. read more

This review is more of frustration with DLC wait times in Office. Let's be clear from the onset that my experience with DLC has been nothing less than outstanding as I had Refractive Lens Exchange surgery performed a couple years ago by Doctor Dell and Doctor Cunningham. These two doctors coupled with their technical staff were excellent. My problem is this, you make an appointment at 11:00 or 11:30 and then show up for your appointment on time and then wait around, never an update and zero regard for your time, you could be sitting through lunch time with substantial wait times. Why is this? Is it just bad timing? lunch breaks? or is it just a systemic failure? If you have a 9:30 appointment, you will be seen in less than 15 minutes but that's just an FYI for readers. These 11:00am 11:30am appointments offers zero consideration to your individual schedule and lack of comms lead you to believe that they just aren't cognizant to it. I for one can't wait around for them to see me when I have a schedule to adhere to with people that depend on me keeping these schedules. I needed this appointment and now am stuck with calling them back for follow up or call another Doctor. I want to be clear that this isn't unique to me, other patients that I referred for the same surgery offer the same circumstances. So as I said it's systemic and needs to change. I understand that it is called a "waiting room" but they bring a whole new meaning to those terms. If you make an appointment, make sure it's early AM or be ready for the wait read more

Wonderful surgeons and support staff. If you use insurance, be aware that co-pays may be much higher than you initially expect due to high number of doctor visits required ($40/visit) and two surgery co-pays (because each eye is operated on separately, usually with one week between surgeries). My rating would have been five stars rather than one star, but anesthesia services to the surgery center (which is partially owned by the Dell surgeons) is outsourced to Orthomed. Unfortunately, Orthomed is out of network with Blue Cross Blue Shield Healthselect (and is also out-of-network with many other Central Texas insurance companies). No one at Dell or their surgery center prepares the patient for this, nor is this information given to the patient in the cost estimates. This caused me significant stress about a month after my surgeries when my EOBs indicated I would owe the full $14,000 anesthesia bill that Orthomed billed to my insurance, even though Dell Laser's surgery center is in-network. I had to spend endless hours on the phone with both Orthomed and BCBS, and also had to file an appeal with BCBS, because my contention that this fell under Texas' "surprise billing" legislation was denied by BCBS numerous times. I kept all the correspondence between Orthomed and Healthselect, which I used to file my appeal. As much as I liked the doctors and staff at Dell Laser, I would go with another provider where the surgical anesthesiologists are in-network with your insurance. I have been a cancer patient for over two decades and never once had this type of problem with MD Anderson. (not sure why the review said I live in San Francisco. I live in Austin). read more

I have been going to Dr. Dell for at least 10 years. I am very upset with their practice right now. I just had an appointment there two days ago. Dr. Gomez changed my prescriptions I tried the new medicine and they really hurt my eyes. I called the office 3 times today and I never received a call back. I have never called and asked to talk to anyone there. I was told they would get back to me in two plus hours. They never responded. I will be looking for a new eye doctor. My visit to Dell Vision felt a bit like an episode from Seinfeld with a certain soup peddler, if I'm being honest. Some of the staff know they have the cache of the Dell name think they can just treat patients dismissively because of it. I'll start by saying I was only there to see Dr Cunningham for a routine eye exam as a new patient. I asked specifically for Dr Cunningham, and chose an appointment several months out in order to be seen by him, because my husband had seen Dr Cunningham, and one of our friends had recommended him. I even ended up being rescheduled a few weeks before the exam because Dr Cunningham wasn't available on my originally scheduled date. The exam itself was great. My tech was friendly and efficient. But she didn't introduce herself, which I immediately found unusual. After having my eyes dilated I waited to see Dr Cunningham. The doctor that came to see me didn't introduce himself either, so odd! Then I remember thinking, gosh, Dr Cunningham is much younger than his photo online, but didn't really think twice. This doctor gave me a great exam and I headed to check out. During checkout there was a slight wait, no biggie, and the receptionist called back for the doctor, saying "Dr Martin". So I finally realized I had not been seen by the doctor I'd made the appointment with (and had been RESCHEDULED to see). Here's when I found out it's just good to be the king when you're Dell Vision. I called and asked why the switch and was told Dr Martin often sees Dr Cunningham's patients. When I said I just thought it was odd that no one introduced themself and Dr Martin never said, "Hi, I'm Dr Martin, filling in for Dr Cunningham", or anything I was I was basically dismissed with that's the way we do things, our patients don't question it. They said they'd "put it in my file", which I wasn't sure what that meant, maybe please treat this patient with some courtesy unlike the way we treat other patients who understand the privilege of being seen at Dell Vision. read more

Sorry that there is not a negative star category here. This reviews is a long time coming because there was no way to ever know what really happened. I had cataract surgery with Steven Dell 6 years ago, a social acqaintance and someone I thought was a good doctor. Dell made claims with this amazing new lens that I would have perfect vision. That never happened. After numerous follow ups the blame was put on my eye. He recommended a follow up laser procedure and said it would fix everything. I am sure multi focal lenses work for many people but not those with certain conditions that Dr. Dell was clearly aware of. So for six+ years I have struggled to drive at night because of halos that make night vision close to impossible and dangerous. I left the practice and was told that the expensive multifocal lens I received was a terrible choice for my eye. I have dreaded the day I would need surgery on my other eye viewing the same outcome. After much research I was guided to an amazing doctor. I had surgery yesterday and received the correct replacement lens with almost perfect vision after one day. So Dr. Dell I wish you the best. I am not blind but clearly have been vision impaired for years thanks to you. I also would like to give fair warning to anyone contemplating surgery with him to get a second opinion. I had a poor experience with cataract lens replacement with DelVision. 1. I had a reaction to the anesthesia, had an emergency catheter that evening, and I was nauseous for three days; 2. Later, they recommended a YAG laser procedure, which caused cornea edema and pain and great blurriness in both eyes (not the expected reactions). 3. my vision is still not clear at distance after six months. 4. In December, they prescribed Xiidra for dry eye and gave me a sample pack. In February, Dr. Cunnigham said they would try something else for dry eye. However, the front desk gave me a Xiidra pack again and told me to use it. I objected, but they told me to use it and wrote it down for me. I used it. They changed the prescription to Restasin because of cost, but didn't inform me of the change. I used up the sample pack of Xiidra again, then realized I had a different prescription for restasin. When I called for clarification and objected to not being told of the change, they said I was rude. They agreed that Xiidra doesn't work over the short term. The front desk said they always give out a sample pack of Xiidra for dry eye (regardless of the prescription?). My impression is that the front desk overruled the doctor and told me to take Xiidra, changed it back when the cost was too high, didn't inform me, and was angry when I objected. I had cataract surgery several years ago and went today for some follow up because my vision was diminishing. Dr Cunningham and technical staff were great. However, I needed to have a follow up appointment in 6 weeks in the morning per Dr Cunningham for pressure check, and the receptionists was on the border of rude. She informed me that Dr Cunningham "would see you when he could see you". After going around with her 3 times to get a morning time and asking her to check with the doctor, being put on hold, then....a miracle, a morning time was suddenly available. I wrote a 1-star (now deleted, I hope) review a couple of days ago out of frustration with front desk staff not seeing "my logic" over their intent to bill my insurance for a follow-up visit that I thought was included in my original refractive lens exchange $14,000 package. My point was with a high deductible, I end up paying for such things and had understood this to be originally included and so I cancelled that appointment after showing up. To their credit, they called presumably after reading my review and encouraged me to come in for a follow-up. I did so and they made things right. What a horrible experience! Please visit this business if you would like to pay over-priced fees to be treated dismissively I've had better experiences dealing with time-share salespeople. In response to a simple question I asked regarding the comments he made to the assistant about my eyes during an expensive out-of-pocket procedure, Dr. Cunningham stated that it was just "shop-talk" and refused to answer. While I was not told there would be an addition fee, I was charged an additional fee for a brief scan that was run after the procedure. When I tried to call the facility following my appointment, I was put on hold and listened to endless recordings of, "Your call is important to us...". When I finally got through and requested that the staff mail me a product that I had purchased that had not been handed to me when I checked out, the request was refused with obvious disdain by the receptionist. I don't like risk. Even though I loathed wearing my glasses and could no longer wear contact lenses due to chronic dry eye, I refused to consider getting surgery to correct my nearsightedness. Even though I've had several friends over the years who have raved about the improved quality of life they experienced after surgery, I just couldn't get past the fear. What if I was in that tiny percentage with a bad outcome? Why would I want to gamble with my eyes for an elective procedure? The cure to my fear was finding the highest rated doctor I could afford with the most stringent patient acceptance criteria. I figured that a guy who cares a great deal about his success statistics wouldn't choose me as a patient if I'm not a great candidate. Plus, as a teaching and testing facility, the office would have access to the latest and greatest gadgetry to increase the accuracy of the procedure as well as my comfort. Dr. Dell's team took a few hundred different measurements of my eyes (many that I'd never experienced before, even though I've been visiting the eye doctor every 6-12 months for the past 20+ years). Both he and Dr. Cunningham discussed several different issues with my eyes and lifestyle changes I could make and meds to take to improve them. I learned that I (like most women beyond their 20s) needed to get on a high dose of Omega 3s to combat dry eye, and to become fanatical about wearing sunglasses at all times when outdoors. I also found out that a red eye condition I'd had for years was actually a bacterial infection that could be cleared up with the right antibiotic - huh, wonder why my "regular" eye doc didn't catch that before? After careful consideration of all the variables and some preliminary treatment for my dry eyes, they gave me the green light to proceed to a glasses-free face for the first time since 7th grade. Since I'd been out of contacts for years already, I didn't have to wait long. From first consult to surgery, it was less than a month (and this delay was more about my schedule than his). It's now been 2 weeks, and I am very happy with the results. I went from -5.5 (R) / -4.75 (L) correction to 20/15 (R) and 20/20 (L) vision, and my sight is expected to continue to improve over the next several weeks. I had PRK eye surgery done back in 2005 and have had zero complaints thus far; Dr. Dell and his associates are the BEST in Austin. Before consulting with Dr. Dell's office, I had consulted with 4 other eye doctors because my case was such a borderline case at the time (Freakin' Blind...like coke-bottle Thick glasses with an Astigmatism...the whole 9 yards!!); after speaking with the other eye doctors whom were uncertain whether or not the procedure could done correctly, they ALL made Reference Dr. Dell being the BEST.
