4 Stars for possibly the oddest DIY event space / living space / arts space I've ever encountered…read more "Welcome. You are here. It is now." -- The words painted on the stairs leading to this magical place. How can I not be a fan of The Space? This DIY venue, with no signage, located above Anthony's Pizza in Mills 50 is just so crazy that it makes me want more. They host a bunch of odd/quirky/artistic events including Literocalypse (a monthly reading series featuring local writers), figure drawing art sessions, crazy dance parties (ex: SPACE-FEST), nude yoga, zine-release parties, musicians from all around, etc. Park behind Anthony's and walk up the stairs to find fantastically decorated hallways (sheets, sheets, and more sheets!) in what I imagine used to be a regular apartment. I went for Literocalypse one night and found myself wandering the apartment between readings. It seemed like people lived there- the kitchen looked like I had stocked it in my early college days and there were some homemade brownies sitting there, tempting anyone brave enough to take one. Their website, though minimal, hints to the goals of this place with a simple message at the top: "culture. expression. collaboration. education. inspiration. community. progress." It seems you can rent the space for events or to live there- "rental rates are flexible and donation based." I dig that they have a calendar of events that seems to be kept up to date. Unfortunately, I've heard that they've recently been throwing shows and events to raise money to save The Space and I hear that the actual physical space is for sale, but hopefully with the support of the arts community it will remain in its current iteration or another. In the end, Orlando is better for having these types of unique, non-judgemental venues for young artists to explore themselves and for us less artistic folks to enjoy something very real and untainted. And yes, I hear the dance parties are pretty freaking nuts (and hot, with only window AC units).

The lighting on the stage wasn't that great as the projected screen got in the way of the other lighting. They need to light it more from the bar area instead of right above the stage pointing down. Not the best. Most of the seating was those tiny uncomfortable stools with no backs, but the bar had seats that were bigger and had backs to them. I'm glad we were able to sit there. Drinks were good and the big buckets were only $15 which is pretty good for any cocktail these days. They also had lots of choices for hard alcohol and beers available. Staff was great and kept checking in. And the Pizza looked good too, although I didn't have any. I just scowled at other patrons consuming it. Overall, this was a good place with good views of the stage from multiple angles and I'd go here to see a show again!

They had a handful of draft beers and another handful of packaged brewskis too. The selections weren't extensive but they were on the crafty side. They did have my favorite beer ever (Weihenstephaner) in a can which was awesome and they even poured it into a branded glass. And like a Mike Tyson opponent in the early 90's, it went down quick! Ahhhhh... What stood out to me was the awesome service. The two ladies behind the bar quickly recognized when I needed another, and another, and another, and another, and another, and another, and were quick to offer another libation.

At the end of a show big groups of people walk together back towards their cars & it's fun. The food items can be pricey, but a soda for $4, or popcorn, might be the best choices. I tend to sit high up to save money on tickets, and up there part of a sign or screen behind the stage might be blocked by overhead visuals, lighting fixtures. Seats were comfortable. No drink holder. Check the section you're in, it's written on the wall. No railing to hold when walking past other seats. Audio was excellent. One time when I saw Jimmy Buffet the people around me kept talking, but when I saw Weird Al Yankovic he sounded great and I could hear better. I saw a '80s~'90s old school show there once & the BASS was booming, excellent sound. Interesting how they divide the place up for different shows, giant parts of the auditorium/stadium disappear with humongous giant black curtain screens. The place often looks completely different inside, different configuration of seats available. Security & staff are super friendly. Helpful kind people. Escalators go really high up. After the shows the rooftop bars are worth checking out for incredible views & interesting menus.

I don't have many arenas to compare Kia Center to, and I feel like basketball/hockey arenas are a lot more homogeneous than say baseball stadiums. There was nothing here to really knock my socks off like when I took my dad to see the Tigers play at Pittsburgh's glorious PNC Park. But it was a swell time nonetheless. I also don't usually spring for or get freebies for lower bowl seats so it's a bit apples and oranges to try to compare the close to the action seats I treated us to here to the high altitude ones I usually find myself in at Little Caesar's Arena, recently for a game 2 playoff win against these same Orlando Tragic. Sorry, I should try to keep it classy here, especially since my Pistons bought themselves a trip to Cancun in the second round. Anyways we had good seats with nice sightlines. Outside they had a whole fan experience area that seemed many geared to young people but wasn't happening too much. Funny cause there's a kind of party area courtyard outside LCA that's usually pretty sleepy for the games I've been to. Just random stray selfie takers mostly. The pizza stand we hit up was well organized and smooth, letting a big queue move through there pretty quickly, with its system of grabbing premade slices, beverages and snacks yourselves and then cashing out with cards at self service kiosks. There's stands at LCA set up like that but only for beverages and snacks, nothing with food that will serve as a whole meal. I also like this better than the system I encountered at PNC Park in Pittsburgh where you have to preorder and cash out on your phone and then come up when your number is called. The pizza was okay, nothing outstanding but arena and stadium food never really is. You could tell it was an Orlando Magic home game but there was a sizable and vocal Pistons fan contingent there. We actually sat next to a couple of Detroit fans and there were a couple more a couple rows behind us. With Orlando being such a tourist destination I feel like they probably often get mobbed up with fans of visiting teams, at least from the eastern part of the country (and Canadian Raptors fans) especially at certain times of the year. My decibel meter on my phone only maxed out around 100 which isn't too great, though the arena was probably somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4 full. No comparison to John Mason player intros back home but all the usual whistles and bells with snippets of rap songs, cheerleaders, youth performers and a dragon as opposed to a horse mascot. Not a bad arena. I wouldn't mind seeing a concert there one night if I ever get the opportunity to see a good one.

It has been a long time since I've gone to Will's Pub for an event. We came to see a friend play in…read morea band and had a great time. The bar has changed quite a bit since the last time I was inside but it was still good vibes all around. The bartenders made a great gimlet and spicy bloody mary for us. I'm impressed with how many bathrooms there were here! To me, that is necessary at a bar. Whoever was running sound that night did a great job because the band never felt overly loud. I was a little nervous about it without my ear plugs (why do I always forget those when I'm going to see a band!). Anyway, loved that they still had a photobooth and we had fun playing pinball for a while. This is a bit of an Orlando institution so I'm glad it's stuck around!

I've been to a lot of comedy shows and have never once stood through one until the one at Soundbar. The show was advertised at 8p. We arrived about 7:30 and were told the the doors opened at 8. The show finally started at 9p which is ridiculous as everyone was pretty much inside by 8:15p. Keep in mind, everyone is standing and waiting, so the hour delay made it worse! I don't know the reason, but most of the comedians were wandering around during that time, so they were there. Maybe the main guy was late, who knows. When the show started, it was better! Lot's of comedians and all were funny. Some of them commented and seemed empathetic to the fact we were all standing. By the end, we were sore and couldn't wait to get to the car to sit down! I'm sure the venue is perfectly find for a rave, acoustic, punk rock, death metal, country band (don't you wish one band hit all the marks?), but using this venue for comedy is a mistake. Especially when the show doesn't start on time and you're standing there for 3 hours!

They've made some great changes since Backbooth to open up the space a little bit more. The acoustics are great. The whole feel is just very friendly, like you're listening to music in your friend's garage. I recently saw William Ryan Key here (formerly of Yellowcard) and, although I've seen more Yellowcard concerts than I can remember to count, this was one of the best experiences I've had seeing him/them just because of how intimate the space was. Great vibes all around. The staff is friendly too. I'd come back to Soundbar for concerts again and again.
