Called Dempster and Bill came over too look at my pressure tank because I wanted a larger one put in he charged me 175 dollars service charge and if I hire him it would be included in the price then he noticed a leaking hot water tank so I asked him for an estimate he said he'll get back to me but i told his office that I wanted a certain brand hot water tank and a different size plus a larger pressure tank . A Week past never heard back then I called and went back and forth with the office about the tanks the bill said that I should pick up the tanks and he'll put them in . So he got his 175 dollars service charge and did nothing but looked never heard back A bad way to run a business so I had to hire another plumbing company which was very helpful and professional with no service charge and did a great job and gave them more work to do too Dempster gets a 1 star for being unprofessional and taking my money for nothing read more

Up until this last problem, I had 5 + stars for DEMPSTER PLUMBING . . . But now I have to give him ONE STAR, Or half a star just for existing! For months I have been trying to talk to Mr. Dempster regarding plumbing work that was done by one of his plumbers named, "Otis." Sweet, charming and handsome, "Otis" has disappeared into the sunset and has not answered any of my texts or calls. Poof! Disappeared! Last time I talked to Otis, he stated he was waiting for "special parts" that were on back order for my job that was taking way too long due to COVID!" Yeah . . . Right! COVID is but a memory! . . . STILL WAITING! Dempster Plumbing has not returned numerous calls and messages. All I keep getting is a "recording" to leave a message . . . I've left numerous messages . . "Please call me to resolve problem." . . . "Are you still in business? . . Please call me." . . "Where is Otis?" . . . "I really need to hear from you, Mr. Dempster." I am messaged-out! The job in question had to do with an on-going leak that, Otis had originally fixed and continued to leak even after he "repaired it!" And . . get this . . after taking so long to answer, he, "dear Otis" stated that the "warranty" had expired! Who does that?!. . . I hired a new plumber recommended by my electrician . . that took approximately 45 mins. to diagnosed and repaired . . . and cost $285! And get this. . . "He" had all the parts needed for this job! However, I paid DEMPSTER Plumbing over $600 for Otis's work . . . Which failed miserably! So much for warranties! Where is Otis? And why is Mr. Dempster refusing to answer my calls? Bill Dempster and his team are fantastic! I helped my mother-in-law find a plumber for her bathroom remodels and because Bill's team is so talented, it grew into a bigger project. His team was a one stop shop for other projects she needed to get done before she moves into her condo. They installed new fixtures in the shower, faucets, fix the piping in the laundry room and secured the hot water heater. They also installed bathroom fans in both bathrooms, removed wallpaper, re-tiled one bathroom and painted the entire place. She's also going to have his electrician install new light fixtures and a ceiling fan. I'm probably forgetting a detail or two but let's just say that did a ton of work. The part that impressed me the most was how right priced that the bids came in. We got a lot of quotes for a lot more that included a lot less. Bill's team was excellent at working with my mother-in-law. She's on medication for her medical condition which makes her not so easy of a customer to deal with sometimes.... she may sound aggressive, change her mind, etc. This is also her first home improvement project so she's high anxiety. Bill's team were a bunch of saints while dealing with her. They were patient and took the time to explain and itemize everything. Thanks Bill! One tip for dealing with Bill... He makes recommendations based on what he thinks will give you the best result. He'll even show you pictures on his camera of past jobs to show you what he means. That doesn't mean that what he suggests is all that he can do. He's super knowledgeable and flexible with design. He takes pride in his work and wants the customer to be happy so don't be afraid to jump in and bounce design ideas off of him. He really knows his stuff! read more

About seven years ago they did the copper piping on the whole house, and it's still working. I didn't have the specifics, so I had found a different plumber to do some additional work within the last year. Recently, we've noticed a strange knocking noise coming from the pipes, during hot days in the summer. It was pretty hard to figure out how it was reproducing, so though we went back and forth for a bit on what it could be and I was trying to describe it, they scheduled a time to come out. Of course, it was a cool day, and it would not reproduce. However, they convinced me that an expansion tank is necessary because we had a pressure regulator installed by another plumber (as a side note, they seemed miffed that someone else worked on "their work"). So we got the expansion tank installed, which the person who came out guaranteed would fix the problem, yet a few days later, the knocking noise came back. I knew there was only one hot day left in the season, which would have been the next day, so I called them in the late afternoon to see if someone could come out, even some time in the afternoon would have been fine, so I thought it would be enough lead time. Well, I guess since they already got my money, they didn't bother calling me back. read more

Had Bill come out for an estimate of adding a new gas line, the job was done nicely and efficiently in 2.5 hours by two technicians. However my technician misunderstood me and inconveniently located the gas line 2 inches towards the left, just enough to not fit my new appliance. Anyways, I called to have them come out again, and this time I have some other projects to be done.. But they just flaked out on my appointment this morning. I will give them a second chance and see how it goes. Update: I am still waiting for them to call me back to get me an appointment and I think this wait has became very ridiculous. Fired. Update: This owner's comment did not apologize for flaking out on me for my previous appointment, neither did he offer a solution for anything in the future. Also, he was wrong with my availability, I am okay with anything before 9am, not 8am. Or after 4pm, not 5pm. And if there is no free estimates during these time slots, why not telling me there are non free ones? I don't even know these things existed. Update: Got the quote and the price sounds reasonable to me, I will wait to have them finish the job to update my review as a final review. I've received a more-less fast reply to my online request for a quote with a very detailed description of what needs to be done, but the reply only invited me to schedule a visit. When I called on Friday early afternoon the dispatcher has told me that they could come only on Monday and I need to pay upfront $165 by credit card over the phone or in cash upon arrival of plumbers before they provide an estimate quote of the cost. If you don't like the quote, then they keep your $165 for just showing up. I wouldn't exclude that they may do their job well, but what if they quote $650 for the task that another service would charge just $130. The latter amount is what another plumber asked for the task that I've described online to Dempster Plumbing - to clean a drain/sewer line from the kitchen sink. read more

Bill and his team recently did a full repipe (including trenching out to the main), new gas lines, and new kitchen plumbing for a renovation. He is, without exaggeration, the best plumber we've ever had. For starters, he came by on short notice to bid the job, and got me the quote back within just a couple of days. He was able to schedule the job in a narrow window while we were out of town a few weeks later, and followed up a couple of times to confirm, including the day before. On the first day of work, Bill and his crew showed up at exactly the agreed time, and were hard at work immediately. They took extra care not to disrupt the rest of the house, and cleaned up after themselves thoroughly at the end of each day. The crew were all easy going and courteous. We couldn't believe how fast they got they got the work done. When they got backed up waiting for some other trades' work, they worked with us to coordinate return trips and work around everyone's schedule. They also went above and beyond, capping in-progress work and rigging up the new hot-water tank so that when we returned (part way through the job) we would have hot water. They also replaced all our faucets and shower-heads to new low-flow ones while they were doing the re-pipe. Bill was a great communicator; he was always available by phone and text, and would call if anything came up. The price was extremely fair and the only change was resizing to a larger gas-pipe size required by our furnace (again at a very fair price). He listened to our needs and concerns, and advised us on what hot-water tank to get and what was required for the re-pipe. He also connected us with the HVAC people we ended up using who were also excellent. In short, Dempster Plumbing were incredible. We will use them for every plumbing job going forward, and recommend them to anyone without equivocation. read more

We have used Dempster plumbing to relocate a water heater when we bought our house ten years ago. Was a somewhat interesting and complicated project (due to installation of high efficiency condensing storage water heater) but was completed on time and passed all permit checks. Have not had any problems with it, the extra efficiency (and tax rebates) have let us recover the extra costs of a fairly exotic (at least at the time) water heater. Using them again now for upgrade of gas pipeline, looking forward to a smooth job well done. read more

I called and booked an appointment for some bathroom plumbing associated with my bathroom remodel. They stated that the owner would be coming out to do the estimate at 11 on Wednesday, September 19th. On Wednesday, they called at 11:15 to say the owner was not available, but they were sending over a qualified plumber to take a look at the project and give a rough estimate. The plumber finally arrives and says that he would need to see the faucet fixtures before he could give a quote. Really?! You need to see what faucets I am planning to use to give an estimate for rough plumbing? He also kept mentioning the use of ABS (plastic), even after I informed him that a condo situated above the third floor would require copper piping. Never received even a rough estimate. What a waste of time. The owner responded to my negative feedback, basically calling me a liar and asking me to call him. Why? So you can waste some more of my time? No, thanks. I picked a different plumber that actually wanted the business, and moved on with my life. read more

Disclaimer: this review is based solely on our own recent experience. We hope it provides unbiased information and useful feedback. For about 2 months (from last week of March to end of May 2016) we hired Dempster Plumbing to remodel two guest bathrooms in our house. The company did a reasonable job overall, and completed all required work items. The crew was courteous, clean, hard-working, communicative, and receptive to our concerns. Unfortunately, several details of our remodeling project fell short of our expectations, and left more to be desired. Therefore we are reluctant to recommend Dempster for high-end bathroom remodeling projects, especially if natural stone (e.g. marble) is involved. Pricing. The price charged for our remodeling project was relatively high. We had interviewed three other contractors, all with decent Yelp reviews, and obtained written quotes (all quotes were for labor-only). Dempster's quote was the highest (around 50% higher than the 2nd highest, and almost twice the lowest). They also charged extra for installing marble tiles, and extra for marble bullnosing per linear foot. We agreed to the pricing in hope for a higher quality job, but the result was rather disappointing (see below for more details). Quality and Workmanship. Most of the project is completed by one guy (Vallen), with some help from a couple of assistants. However, he didn't seem to possess adequate skills to handle some of the tasks, as mentioned below. He was fairly open to feedback and willing to fix the most jarring problems. However, the sheer number of quality issues made it impossible to make progress if we were to pause the job every day and fix things. One such example is edge treatment (bullnosing) for marble tiles. It was done rather poorly. The resulting tile edges were visibly curved inwards near the corners. Eventually this improved, but we still ended up with several curved edges in prominent locations. There was also a problem with marble tiling in general. Apparently Vallen was not at all experienced in dealing with natural stone tiles. Although he tried very hard to fix the problems as we requested, and did gradually improve later on, we still ended up with noticeable lippage and uneven gaps for quite a number of tiles. Another example was with drywall repair and texturing. One of the bathrooms required a large area of drywall repair. Vallen has some drywall experience, but nowhere near pro-level. We ended up with a fairly noticeable uneven ridge on an interior wall. Also, the drywall texturing was inconsistent. He was not very familiar with the texture sprayer and failed to control the thickness of mixture. The texture started rather fine but gradually became coarser and more irregularly shaped. We eventually decided to pay another pro to fix the remaining problems. Time and Schedule. Due to the limitations in staffing (one-to-two person crew most of the time), and frequent setbacks caused by quality problems, the project dragged on for much longer than anticipated. At one point the progress slowed down to a crawl, it took hours at a time to get a row of cut tiles laid right. The whole project also drained considerable amount of our own time and energy, because we needed to frequently visit the job site mid-day and check for quality problems. In summary, they are probably a decent plumbing company, but do your own homework before hiring them for bathroom remodeling. Hiring them for this project is partly poor decision making on our part. One reason we chose Dempster is that it has a large number of 4 or 5-star reviews, but in hindsight, many of the reviews are for plumbing jobs, not remodelling. Another reason is that they have some photos on Yelp showing past project of marble installation of decent quality. However we later learned that the particular tile installer no longer works for them. == UPDATE == Bill posted some photos, so we feel obliged to clarify a few points. The result looks nice from afar, but they mostly reflect overall design and material quality, instead of craftsmanship. The company didn't offer interior design service, and we did the design and material selection on our own. In the picture of the double vanity, the granite top was made by another vendor, and we picked the materials and hanged the mirrors ourselves. If there's anything to say about installation quality, it's that the right-side sink leaked for 3 weeks after installation before it was finally fixed. The company also broke a glass shelf of a Robern medicine cabinet, and we had to go to a glass shop to custom-make a replacement. We initially didn't mention these details because our intention was to help fellow consumers make informed decisions, not to make the company look bad. We will not continue posting more detailed pictures, although many quality problems are readily visible upon closer inspection, despite of our constant monitoring, and after most jarring errors got fixed along the way. read more

Dempster Plumbing has been servicing our plumbing needs for the past few years, which included installing a new water heater, fixing a leak in the powder room, and then now fixing a leak in the upstairs shower. Bill (the owner) is knowledgeable, professional and a no-nonsense kinda guy, and we can trust him with high quality work. His son came out today to fix the shower upstairs, and he also seem very knowledgeable. However, the only concern I would have is that the pricing was a bit steep to just replace a leak in the shower. He mentioned that it's a $100/hr for labor, which is probably a standard rate, but upon discovering that the original plumbing was subpar, he said it will be $600 to fix the leak and replace the shower parts. It took him less than 2 hours to complete the job, which we are grateful, but I can't seem to get a detailed breakdown of the cost between parts and labor and how it added up to $600 for 2 hours worth of work since the parts were probably around $200 (based on our own guess). If he was able to break down the fees more clearly for me instead of just a lump sum of parts and labor, it would have justified the charge better. So, I knocked off a star. read more

I'm a real estate broker and have gone through a lot of plumbers. Until now, I haven't been able to refer any plumbers out to my clients because there wasn't any one that I could trust. Then, I was recently referred to Bill Dempster and his team by a client of mine. I was so impressed with the quality and finish work in my clients bathroom (which was practically a full remodel) that I called him to open up my bathtub walls to check out some water damage and install a shower enclosure. They did a great job of identifying the problem, salvaged the marble tiles and did a beautiful job patching, sheetrocking and reattaching the marble. They also did an amazing job putting the enclosure on. I have seen so many shotty jobs that I know it's not as easy as it seems. His team even noticed that the new glass door was slightly chipped so they took it back to Home depot for me and got a new one and the installation was spot on!! They vacuumed and cleaned and it was like they were never there! Thanks Bill, Vallen and Brian!! You guys are awesome! I have spent years reading and evaluating others experiences, so I felt it was time to give back. Some are great, sadly this one isn't. After I post these pictures, I will not be back in this feed, I have been contacted by quite a few people privately and I feel their pain... I really do. Fear of retaliation and backlash is definitely a factor understandably. I will make note that we found a 6 inch brand new nail strategically placed dead center in my rear tire conveniently after posting this review. I was told to post it here just in case anything else out of the ordinary happens. My husband and mechanic said this size nail is not something you drive over and it somehow pops up and punctures a tire on a moving vehicle. I agree. I am far from intimidated, I am here for the people. Customers deserve the best, and we shouldn't settle for less. That being said, here are pictures as promised. Walls were left open as I previously explained, dirt coated my entire house as seen on the shelf and the snooping worker into my sons bed. It's called a twin pop up tent, and after my son saw this he refused to sleep in it again. Wire pulled from the garbage disposal... If anyone private messages me I can dig up the rest. But I think this is plenty. Since then, I have had to replace most of my furniture including his bed and I have paid for my carpets to be cleaned multiple times. They made us feel violated and it cost much more than money to clean up their mess. I wish everyone well in their quest to find a good company to do business with, do research and invest in cameras. Okay, I'm impressed! When it came to the owner's attention that I paid for driving time and so forth, the office contacted me. They sent me a check for $85 that shouldn't have been billed to me. Talk about making it right! Dempster Plumbing has earned my business for anything else I need, ever! I had always intended to use them again. Now, I for sure will. I found Bill Dempster though a recommendation from a co-worker, and after reading the existing reviews here and on on Angie's List decided to talk to him about my re-pipe needs. He was quickly able to set up an appointment, and gave me what I believe to be a reasonable quote for the work. He and his team did a wonderful job with the re-pipe, and quickly corrected the few problems that were discovered (one caused by an earlier partial re-pipe of the home). They kept the site clean, both by tarping all areas of the house they entered and by sweeping the garage after every day. The drywall they had to remove for their work is almost surgical, and even though they were not contracted for the drywall repair, they replaced all but one piece that was too damaged to re-use (prior water damage in the bathroom). They made sure I had water every night, and even repaired my dryer vent for me while they were under the house. They also replaced a shower valve at my request and neatly dressed the water filter lines under the kitchen sink. The re-pipe and tankless water heater install went well and on schedule. I highly recommend Bill and his company, and would definitely use him for any plumbing needs in the future. read more

Okay, I get it, things come up and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt once, but TWICE you "get stuck on the job"? Do we not own calendars? Let me tell you how quickly I'd get fired if I didn't show up twice from schedule appointments with my customers and I work in sales and marketing. What is the point of an appointment if you don't show? Next time you should just say "Yes, I will make this appointment with you but I reserve the right to show up or not show up depending on what I feel for the day. But please, by all means, clear your calendar and make arrangements to work from home and make sure you make yourself available IN CASE I decide to show up." I had a slab leak, and called a few places for quotes as well as recommendations on how to fix the problem. After talking to a few plumbers, Dempster came up with the best solution which was a partial repipe and reroute. This saved me a ton of money, since all the other guys said I needed to do a full repipe. Bill, is a pleasure to work with, and is very quick to respond to any issues. He prides himself on doing things right. They did the job quick, and for a very reasonable price. I would have given them a full 5 stars, but ran into a few minor things, which in the end BIll resolved, but because I had to take a few extra hours off work, I had to take 1 star away. Reasonably quick at calling back, though don't expect because they say they are open until 7PM on Sunday that they will call you back on Sunday. Their plumber was also timely, showing up about 10 minutes before our appointment. Both signs of good customer service. Unfortunately, from this point on, they fell short(except for friendliness). I was very clear upfront with the steps I took to diagnose my shower water pressure. What does he do? He spends the next 2 hours following the exact steps I took, only to leave me with a $125 bill, a $1600 quote for a major replacement(even though there was never a root cause) and showers that still do not work! Update: I was able to fix the issue myself with about 15 minutes of work and not spending another dime. This proves the work suggested with the $1,600 quote would have been completely unnecessary. Update 2: Dempster offered to refund my money, presumably because of this review. I appreciate them doing so and I am changing the rating from 2-stars to 3-stars because of it, but there was still time lost in all of this that did not result in a fix from Dempster, a plumbing professional. read more

Bill just completed a repiping job for me and the reviews are true! I completed a major renovation in 2003 on our house built in 1906. The house has some lath and plaster walls and in that renovation we were never immune from dust. On day one, Bill came in and entered walls to repipe to the shower faucets, when we arrived that evening the house was immaculate. If you care about clean, Bill is amazing. His son really does help and others who were part of the project were soft spoken professionals who approached their work like watchmakers - it's obvious that they are serious tradesman in the same class as plumbers I've brought in from the two top plumbing companies that serve Palo Alto. Bill did the work for a fixed price but when he ran into the gotchas that come with a 100 year house, he fixed it and didn't charge - I am not sure Bill wants that public but it was a breath of fresh air, it seemed as if he was working on his own house. The drywall tape and plaster (not sure what they call this step) was done by a subcontractor and he was professional, punctual and spotless as well - the guy should do museum restoration - I know that sounds like I am gushing but I am so happy to finally find a good plumber. This is my second review for Dempster Plumbing. The previous was also a 5 stars and was about our full house repipe, roughly 2 years ago. Recently I started loosing water pressure on our high efficiency heater. Dell came and we tried to diagnose the problem together but more tests were needed which I ended up doing on my own and communicating the results back to Dell. Out of the blue he offers to come down and check this further. After an hour (and more tests), we had diagnosed the problem to a corroded anode on the water heater outlet. We also had another episode where we thought we had a leak in the crawlspace (on a Sunday). I called the office (they were out of course) but within 10 minutes Dell called me, left me his personal cell# and was ready to come in a nick of time. After crawling under the house I realized there was no leak. The point is that from my experience with them, you can always count on Bill and his team to be there if there is a problem. They also provide very honest pricing compared to other quotes I got when doing the repipe. Since I have recommended them to colleagues at work who also had a very positive experience. read more

I recently needed to replace my water heater, and with Thanksgiving only a couple days away I needed to do it FAST. After calling around to several places for blind quotes, I spoke with Bill Dempster at Dempster plumbing. He quoted a good price, without monkeying around at all. I was still hoping to find a better price, so I made more calls and even had one person come by to do an in person, formal quote. Not only was it more, it was almost two and a half times more. And it was all add-ons like "new flexline", "new TMP", "new ball valve", etc. When I told him about the better quote he assured me that there was no way it would hold up once the plumber showed up and saw my setup. Long story short, I nervously called Dempster back to see if I should expect add'l costs and was assured that I had nothing to worry about. When the guys showed up I was pleasantly surprised to see that EVERYTHING the other plumber suggested would be extra ... was included. They also did a great job positioning the unit better than it had been, and cleaned up quickly. All in all a fantastic experience. read more

Santos and team did a sewer lateral replacement and installed a new clean out. They did a great job. I had a few quotes and the price for the job was competitive. Chose Dempster based on past Yelp reviews and because Santos did a good job checking everything out and asking the right questions when he came out to do the quote. Replacing the sewer line was big job, lots of digging due to massive quantities of tree roots in the yard. They kept the area clean and did a good job. They pulled the permit and arranged for the city to come out and clean out the section of line between the new clean out and the street Would highly recommend Dempster to anyone and would hire them again. read more

Bill was able to come within hours to bid on a sewer line replacement. This was a difficult job, as the sewer line was broken 60ft away from the house built on a hill. The breakage was underneath a retaining wall and a tree, as determined by another plumber, whose snake and machine had gotten stuck in it. The job would involve a lot of digging. As it turns out, there was a gas line nearby, so it had to be hand digging. Bill's crew was able to do the job for 40% of the bid of the first plumber that came in - and get their machine unstuck as well. The job was completed promptly. I will definitely call Bill again for other plumbing needs. read more

I called Dempster Plumbing after reading the other reviews here on Yelp. Not only did Bill (the owner) answer when I called at 9:15 in the morning, he was here in 45 minutes - exactly when he said he would be here. He quickly diagnosed the problem and fixed it in an hour. AMAZING! I've never had this kind of professional response from a plumber before. Typically, I get voice mail, no call back, a time range when they'll show up that's always wrong, and a couple hours more to fix the problem than estimated. I was in a rock-and-a-hard-spot situation with out-of-town guests arriving and pretty much everything from the kitchen, laundry room and main bathroom backing up into the bathtub. Not good. Bill came out on the same day I called and worked hard to get the blockage cleared. It was not easy to resolve, but on the third location he tried, it worked! He charged a very reasonable fee and when we asked, he gave us some tips on how and why we might want to consider a future sewer re-piping to avoid this problem. I will definitely keep Bill in mind for any future plumbing needs, and would recommend him to my friends and family with no hesitation. read more

My family was in the process of moving out of a house when the kitchen faucet started spewing water into the cabinet below when the faucet was turned on. Not what I wanted to deal with while in the middle of moving the contents of a 4-bedroom house and a family of 5. I've done a little handyman work in my day, and a quick look under the sink told me it was coming from the fixture and not the drain, but I didn't have the time or energy to deal with it myself. My first conversation was with Valerie in the office. She was very helpful and worked with me to arrange a time for their plumber to come out when someone could be there. She was understanding and compassionate, and told me that she would request that the plumber have a replacement fixture in the truck with him, since getting the job done quickly was a priority for me. I wasn't able to be there at the appointed time (10am), but my wife was there to meet Jason when he arrived (on time). He looked under the sink and at the fixture, and told her that he thought it was just a gasket for the pull-out sprayer. After 3 1/2 hours and two trips to pick up parts that didn't fit, the faucet was still in pieces. Jason told my wife that he had to make a third trip for parts, but my wife finally had to leave for an appointment. He started talking down to my wife, and asked for payment. She called me, and I told Jason that we would have to reschedule to finish the repair, and there would be no payment until the repair was completed. I called Valerie and left a message right then (about 1:40pm), expressing my frustration and disappointment, and asking her to call me back. She returned my call around 3:15pm, apologizing for the problems. She told me that she was going to get the situation resolved, and asked to call me back. At this point, I was pissed off, and started to draft my 1-star review of Dempster plumbing. At 3:40pm I received a call from Bill Dempster. Apparently, Jason was new and on probation, and wasn't cutting it with the crew. Bill apologized, and sent his best guy Eddie and two helpers out at 4:30pm to fix the problem right. I was skeptical, but when Eddie showed up, they got right to work. They corrected the feed piping that had been previously installed, put in a brand new faucet, and because of the problems I had earlier, only charged me for the minimum labor of one hour. Bill Dempster took a bad situation, and made it right. I suggest that you slam the door if Jason shows up (I don't think he works there any longer), but Bill Dempster and his crew definitely earned my business in the future. I would normally take one star off for the time I had to take off work, but mistakes happen and they earned it back with the above-and-beyond effort to make things right, and the resulting superior work. read more
