This was by far the most unique tour we had in a while. We took the 5:00 PM tour, and our driver, Joel Miner, was none other than the owner himself. There are 5 Sherp vehicles and we felt very fortunate and honor to have him as our guide. We are a family of four, including two teenagers, and he made the experience enjoyable for all of us. He even used a drone to scout the area for wildlife. As a retired state trooper who participated in rescue missions, he immediately made us feel safe and comfortable. He was fun, knowledgeable, and shared many personal stories that kept our entire family entertained throughout the tour. Toward the end of the trip, he spotted a young moose in a nearby field, which was the perfect cherry on top of an already amazing experience. One of the best parts was receiving a souvenir video package that included drone footage from our tour. It was such a thoughtful touch and a wonderful keepsake. Highly recommended! Initially we weren't certain we wanted to do this tour because it's on the expensive side, so we called and spoke with Joel, the owner, about what the tour entails, safety concerns, likelihood of seeing wildlife,etc. He spent over 30 minutes chatting with us about the tour, his experience as a search & rescue worker and really put our mind at ease. Then we came to Alaska and spent 3 days in the Fairbanks area without seeing any wildlife. I drove around Healy...beautiful mountains, but still no wildlife. To be clear, there's never a guarantee of seeing animals in the wild, Joel was very clear on this point, but Joel, Tim, and Mark did everything to increase our chances and they delivered! Between two simultaneous Sherp vehicles and multiple drones scouting ahead for wildlife, we saw 2 adult moose and a cub. We also saw a snowshoe hare. We also saw beautiful mountain ranges from a perspective you won't see from the roadway, even if you visit Denali National Park. We got to ride over frozen rivers and lakes and see a historic WW2 era cabin and hear the unique history of it, as well as Alaska in general. The guides went out of their way to make the trip fun, safe, and informative. In the end, the tour was expensive, but a fantastic value for what you get. The vehicles are amazing and can do things you'd never be able to do in other atvs. Our guide, Stephan, was funny and engaging and very knowledgeable about the vehicle and the area we toured in. You SHOULD expect charismatic locals who talk about everything from a Alaskan native's point of view. You should NOT expect a ton of wildlife. Alaska has a "keep Alaska wild" which means that you may or may not get a chance to see animals. The Fat Truck portion of the tour was great. Riding on such a huge vehicle on snow and ice was definetely a unique experience, especially on the frozen lake! Our guide was fun, pics turned out amazing and the drone video was a real treat! We didn't see any wild life, but it's nature, nobody can control that. The reason for not giving a 5 star review was the ride from Fairbank to the meeting point. Essentially we paid $250 for a van to drive us from point A to point B while the driver talked our ears off about his personal life. He answered some questions about the area, we stopped at a gas station, then at Denali Visitor Center, which was a tease because we didn't even see the first 11 miles of the park, which are open to the public. Our guide explained that commercial vehicles are not allowed in the park so why even stop there? Taking a pic in front of the Denali Nationl Park sign seemed stupid since we didn't get in. Lastly we stopped for lunch, which wasn't included and on the way back we stopped at a small town gift shop. Frankly, I wish I would have known that was the case. We would have driven our own rental car to the meeting point, saved $250 each and would have gotten on the Fat Truck tour happy. It should be specified that the ride is primarely for people that don't have a way to get there on their own, because that's all that was. It wasn't a tour, it was simply an expensive 'Uber' ride. I would have justified it if road were snowy and challenging, but being the end of March, roads were clear, so I'd advise anyone to drive their own vehicle to meet up with Fat Truck portion of the tour and allow time to stop in Denali on the way so you can actually drive the first 11 miles of the park, which according to locals are the most picturesque and offer more chances to see wild life. read more

This tour is absolutely not worth the $230 per person. We saw more wildlife from our backyard (to be fair we stayed on Otto Lake) and the tour got jammed up multiple times from other tour companies. Our tour guides were Tim and Brittany. They were knowledgeable about homesteading, foraging, geology, mining practices which is why I gave any stars. Part of our tour group was frustrated as Tim focused on telling stories rather than facts about the area around us. This is an amazing tour. Tim and Joel are incredible guides. This is a family business run by two brothers, and they are very kind and knowledgeable of the area and Alaska history. The Sherp vehicle is definitely the way to experience Alaska's terrain. It's a large vehicle, but very easy to get in and out of and is comfortable inside. It was interesting to be in the same area as described in the book "Into the Wild". In addition to the beautiful scenery, Tim and Joel share entertaining stories and facts about the area. Joel is an Alaska State Trooper and safety is paramount. They also bring along a drone and take videos from above to share with tour guests. I recommend this to anyone visiting Alaska. We definitely recommend this family owned and operated outfit. If you want to access the back roads without the dirt and grime of 4-wheeling in an ATV, this is your ride. Traverse near vertical slopes up the mountain to a viewing plateau after driving/floating in the lake in this comfortable climate regulated ride. Unlike other vehicles that you may not want to take out while raining, this rescue/all terrain truck keeps going on in all weather. If you want a more rugged experience, ask Tim to leave the windows open. If you don't want dirt in your teeth, leave the windows closed. Tim is the perfect host with a local's knowledge. He will let you guide the tour by discussing topics YOU select: history of the area, fauna/flora, animal behavior, coal mining, etc. you tell him your interest and he will do his best to make it happen. This was a fantastic experience! Cannot recommend this tour enough. Joel is a great tour guide and storyteller. We had a retired miner on our tour as well that filled in a few details about the area. This is an absolute must. We stayed in Healy specifically to take this tour. The truck itself is an engineering phenomenon, used for Search and Rescue missions as well. Joel helped us all take awesome pictures (wear appropriate shoes) and get super cool video.
