We had no idea the level of commitment, training, and dedication it takes to lead a dog sledding team, especially in the famed thousand-mile treks of the Iditarod and Yukon Quest races. Jeff King (the "winningest musher in the world"), and his daughter, Tessa, were engaging and captivated our attention the entire time. This is a must-do when visiting Denali (even if you visit the Denali sled dog kennels--it's quite a different experience as Denali's dogs are primarily used for education and transportation during the winter months, while Jeff's dogs are true athletes and bred for speed). Afterwards, buy Jeff's autobiography so you can delve deeper into his fascinating life (near-death experiences in sub-zero temperatures and run-ins with wolves and caribou!).

Our pilot was Lucien who was very experienced and made everyone feel safe and welcome onboard. He was extremely experienced and we could tell he enjoyed what he was doing and took his job seriously while still being fun. We could not have asked for a better pilot (except for his wife). The land crew, Tristan and Sophie were awesome. Extremely friendly and made us feel special and important. After our experience we can understand why TEMSCO is the oldest, best and reputable company in Alaska. They should also be commended for the services they provide to the governmental agencies that care for Denali and other groups to help support the local community.

First things first - Alaska has been a bucket list item for a while. Adding a heli ride to land on…read morea glacier? Holy smokes. So, keep in mind this is the baseline for this review. Anyone is already bound to be happy with having an opportunity to, one, be in Alaska, and two, book an excursion for a heli ride to see a glacier, up close and personal. Temsco exceeded our expectations. With two pilots in the family, we looked at things with maybe a bit more of a discerning eye. All that said, we were a party of four and man, this was such a magical treat. Temsco isn't new to flying but their Denali location is a new addition. Our adventure started off with a personalized van pick up and ride to the business / helo pad. We sat for a safety briefing and were fitted for boots. The small but mighty team was fabulous. They explained what to expect, how things would go and then executed flawlessly. My guy is afraid of heights and doesn't like to be in "tin cans" as he calls small planes. The helicopter was such a different experience for him. You can see most everything and have great views outdoors, even from the backseat. This was the game changer for him. It's way easier to feel more in control with this expanded visibility. And, that aside, the views were magical. This was definitely a trip worth every penny and one that you won't ever forget. We saw wildlife, drank from an arctic stream, had a snowball fight and saw Mt. Denali from the clouds. Wow. Our pilot was incredibly friendly (Flo, a young guy from Germany) but also very laid back, a very skilled pilot and offered commentary as we flew - pointing out Dall sheep several times on the mountain sides. He was fabulous. I could go on and on. Check out the pics, make a plan and def include this once in a lifetime excursion in them. You won't regret it. Ever!

This is my first…read moretime in Alaska as well as in a flying helicopter so it was a once in a life time experience for me. The view from the helicopter was amazing. It felt like I was actually in the satellite view of Google map. The first part of the tour was a lot of greenery, but after we got further along we saw more of the snow covered peak and glaciers. We stopped on a glacier on Mount Deborah and was able to see the melted pools of glacier water. We were lucky that it was a clear day on our tour. We could see the reflection of the mountain peaks in the glacier pools. We even drank the water and it tasted good. The lady who picked us up at the hotel, Lauren, was very friendly and funny. Our pilot, T-Bone, was very good and knowledgeable. I asked many questions and he answered them all. The tour was expensive, but since it was a once in a life time kind of thing, I think it was totally worth it.

This hike is beautiful, as well as a challenge! It's right by the visitor center, also close to the…read morehorseshoe bend trail, right across from the tracks for the entrance. The hike can be a little muddy, as well as strenuous at points, but if you're an experienced hiker you'll be fine. It's super windy up top so if you're visiting during the colder months make sure you layer up, even though you may break a sweat because it's very cold and windy at the top. It's a beautiful hike with a bunch of wildlife--we saw two moose! You have a great view of the park the entire way up. Definitely consider this hike if you're visiting, the view is so worth it when you get to the end!!

This trail can be found by going to the Denali Visitor Center, it is literally right outside their…read moredoor. This is a great hike and no entrance fees make it absolutely free. It is also one of the only hikes that can be done without taking the shuttles further into the park. It's about a 4.4 mile hike round trip with the option of further extending the hike once you get to the top by hiking along the breath taking ridge. In total, you ascend 1700 feet. The trail starts pretty easy, but quickly jets upward and gets steeper and steeper as you near the summit. The trail is well maintained, but loose rocks cover the upper portion. The hike is difficult, but like with any hiking, a determined little kid or out-of-shape person could still do it. Once at the summit you realize that all the hard work was well worth it. You are afforded expansive views of the entire valley and a good part of Denali.

The hike was pretty straightforward and there were a few uphill climbs here and there, but there was nothing anyone in OK shape can't complete. We started our hike at about 8am in the morning and spent 3 hours on our hike. It rained a bit throughout the hike so we didn't encounter other hikers until later in the morning. The views of the 3 lakes were gorgeous though and it was so peaceful out there! The mountains surrounding the lakes weren't that high so it was easy to see their peaks as well. Along the way we saw some interesting trees and vegetation. It helped that our guide was giving us information as we hiked along. We were also warned that there were moose sightings on the trail and we did encounter some fresh moose tracks, but unfortunately we didn't see any. Other than that, there wasn't much danger. The great thing is that this hike is it is free, if you go at it on your own, and can be completed by just about anyone!

You can also start on the other side, near Denali Park Village Lodge. This is a beautiful 9-mile hike. It's listed as a "very strenuous" 6-8 hour hike in our book. We are in decent shape but not the best, and we finished in just under 5 hours, including stops for lots of photos ;) parts of the hike definitely got us breathing hard-- it starts fairly flat but there are stretches that are fairly steep as you ascend a mountain. Beautiful scenery along the way, with rivers, mountains, and several lakes. If you finish the hike after main shuttle, call SALMON BAKE! (907) 683-2733.
